Back in November of 2021, it was announced that Casey Affleck (Manchester by the Sea), Laurence Fishburne (The Matrix), and Emily Beecham (Into the Badlands) had signed on to star in Slingshot, a psychological sci-fi thriller coming our way from director Mikael Håfström (Escape Plan). Filming began on December 1st of that year – and more than two years later, we finally have an update to share on Slingshot! The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that Bleecker Street has acquired the U.S. distribution rights and are planning to give the film a wide theatrical release at some point before the end of 2024.

Clarius Entertainment has acquired Us rights to Benaroya Pictures and The Genre Company’s thriller Cell starring John Cusack (upcoming Love & Mercy, Lee Daniels’ The Butler) and Oscar-nominated Samuel L. Jackson (upcoming Kingsman: The Secret Service, Django Unchained).

When a powerful signal is broadcast across mobile networks worldwide, cell phone users’ minds are instantly and dangerously re-programmed. Heading north through New England in search of his wife and son, Clay Riddell (Cusack) is joined by a group of survivors hoping to fend off the bloodthirsty and hyper-connected “phoners.”
Set to be a wide theatrical release later this year, Cell also stars Isabelle Fuhrman (The Hunger Games) and Golden Globe winner Stacy Keach (Nebraska, The Bourne Legacy).
The film is directed by Tod “Kip” Williams (Paranormal Activity 2). The announcement was made today by the film’s producers Michael Benaroya and Richard Saperstein.

Get ready stateside filmgoers, because the “phoners” (aka “crazies”) are coming to the Us. Stephen King fans know that the master of macabre doesn’t like using cell phones. His 2006 novel, Cell, is a cautionary tale about what can go wrong by pressing portable phones to our ears and keeping them close at hand in our pockets, and its unflinching subject matter contains flocks of murderous lunatics that would be right at home in Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later, George A. Romero’s The Crazies, or Simon Clark’s Blood Crazy.
We knew this unique King novel was getting the adaptation treatment, with King co-writing the screenplay and John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson in the lead roles, but we’re now one big step closer to seeing it on the silver screen, as Clarius Entertainment has acquired the Us rights to the movie.

B-movie classic The Blob is getting another remake. Why? I couldn’t tell you, but here we are. Goldcrest Films is moving forward with the project, which the studio has set The Expendables 2 helmer Simon West to direct.
The 1958 cult classic, directed by Irvin Yeaworth, starred a young Steve McQueen as a teenager whose small Pennsylvania hometown is unexpectedly threatened when a gelatinous alien life-form emerges from a meteor and begins to consume the townfolk, growing larger in size with every new victim and oozing forward with no indication of stopping.
The Blob, though received with mixed reviews at the time of its release, is now held up as a prime example of B-movie entertainment. It birthed a sequel, Larry Hagman’s 1972 Beware! The Blob, and was previously remade in 1988 by Chuck Russell. Producers on this remake are Richard Saperstein and Brian Witten.
West said of his new take:...

Once you’re absorbed by its terror, you can’t even scream. The slimy mass that is the Blob first thrilled audiences when it took on Steve McQueen on the big screen in 1958. It next oozed into cinemas via the 1972 sequel, Beware! The Blob, before being reborn in a 1988 remake directed by Chuck Russell and co-written by Frank Darabont. Proving that it’s still a relentless alien amoeba, 1958’s The Blob is being remade once again.
Goldcrest Films is moving forward with a remake of The Blob, with Simon West (The Expendables 2, Con Air) lined up for the director’s chair and shooting slated to begin this summer. A feature film adaptation of Stephen King’s Cell has been in development for quite some time, but it’s expected to begin shooting early next year. John Cusack is already on board to star in the movie and it has just been revealed that Samuel L. Jackson will be joining him.
According to Deadline, “Jackson plays Tom McCourt, an engineer and former soldier who with Cusack’s Clay Riddell character flees from Boston as the world turns mad thanks to the phones.” For those who are unfamiliar with the novel, Stephen King’s Cell was originally published in 2006 and involves a cell signal that turns most of the population into zombies:

At one point Eli Roth was writing and set to direct a film adaptation of Stephen King’s Cell. That fell through, but it was announced last October that the project was still moving forward with John Cusack set to star. The producers were searching for a director at the time and we now know who was hired for the project.
According to Screen Daily, Tod “Kip” Williams will be directing Cell for Cargo Entertainment. Previously, Williams directed Paranormal Activity 2. Adam Alleca (The Last House On The Left remake) and Stephen King worked together on the script, and it’s said Richard Saperstein, Brian Witten, and Shara Kay are on board as producers. Production is expected to begin in May, so we should be reporting on additional project and casting news in the coming months.

Here’s a synopsis:
“Artist Clayton Riddell had been in Boston negotiating a successful deal to sell his comic book project. In theaters right now, you can catch John Cusack doing some of his most powerful work as an actor in Lee Daniels' The Paperboy. It's an odd film, with darkly hilarious moments that give way to some truly chilling ones, and Cusack downright terrifies. It's fitting, then, that he signs on for another odyssey of madness, this time from the mind of Stephen King.
Screen Daily is reporting that Cusack will play the lead in Cell, a production which reteams much of the crew behind another successful King adaptation, 1408 - in which Cusack also starred.
Cargo Entertainment will finance the production, which is to be produced by former Dimension Films president of production Richard Saperstein, along with colleagues Brian Witten and Shara Kay.
Cell is based on King’s novel about a father’s desperate journey to find his wife and son in the wake of a catastrophic pulse transmitted via mobile phones.

The storm has passed and the mad dash through the neighborhood in pursuit of Snickers and Skittles is tonight. Many kids will be missing out on tonight’s Trick or Treating, but the show must go on. And, John Cusack is getting back into the Stephen King business, signing to star in an adaptation of Cell, King’s take on the zombie apocalypse genre.
King himself co-wrote the screenplay with The Last House On The Left screenwriter Adam Alleca in a story where cell phone signals wipe the brain of any humanity, turning people into aggressive killers and a father who hits the road to find his wife and son.
The 1408 star Cusack will also reteam with 1408 executive Richard Saperstein who will produce Cell through his Genre Company alongside colleagues Brian Witten and Shara Kay. They are currently looking for directors.
Saperstein said:
I’m thrilled to be working with Stephen and John again.

With news of Steven C. Miller's Silent Night, Deadly Night remake, known simply as Silent Night, on its way, everyone's been in quite the festive mood around these parts. It'll be good to have Santa taking care of the naughty properly again. It's been too long.
IFC caught up with star Malcolm McDowell, who talked a bit about his character in the film.
"I'm the good guy, and I'm chasing the bad Santa," he said. "That’s one of the reasons I wanted to do it. I’m happy to do it, and I hope it’s going to be good." Lord knows playing a "good guy" is a bit of a departure for the actor, who's mainly been deliciously evil in everything he's done.

Silent Night, Deadly Night, the poster child for Holiday horror films, caused a huge stink when it was released back in 1984. It wasn.t even the first .killer Santa. movie . (Christmas Evil from 1980 has that distinction though the anthology Tales From The Crypt had one back in 1971) but Silent Night, Deadly Night is the most notorious because it had the balls to be released during the Christmas season and its holiday television ads attracted the ire of overly-sensitive parents, some of who actually went out and picketed various theaters in protest of it. I’m surprised it took them this long to remake it and I doubt it will cause much of a stir, but here are the details so far (via Variety):

His newest film, 11-11-11, is coming out this weekend so naturally we've been wondering when, if ever, we'd be seeing Darren Bousman's previous effort, a loose remake of Mother's Day, released here in the States (the UK got it last month on DVD and Blu-ray). Finally the news has come that Anchor Bay Films has acquired North American distribution rights to Mother’s Day. Hallelujah!
Per Deadline the film has been in the can for a while, but a deal with distributor Gigapix that would have put the film into theaters fell through. Now Anchor Bay is looking at a potential release for next Mother’s Day, which falls on May 13, 2012.

The legendary Jersey Devil has been featured in several films from 2002's 13th Child to The Jersey Devil (2005) and a recent television movie with Lou Diamond Phillips titled Carny (2009). All of these films feature a strangely winged creature that looks like a left over from the Mesozoic era (dinosaurs). Now, this mythical creature will take flight in Darren Lynn Bousman's (Mother's Day) script for The Barrens.
In this latest incarnation, a family heads out into southern Jersey for some fun and camping. Instead, they find the remnants of The Jersey Devil's last meal and a horror filled night or two. Shooting on this film has only recently begun, but fans can have an early look at The Barrens with this concept poster (seen left). Also, a picture is hosted below of the supposed Jersey Devil and no, this film fan did not draw it.
Release Date: Fall 2012.
Director/writer: Darren Lynn Bousman.

Exclusive: Hot Tub Time Machine director Steve Pink will helm the remake of The Toxic Avenger, which he'll write with Daniel C. Mitchell. Deadline revealed last April that remake rights to the Troma Films seminal title were acquired by producers Akiva Goldsman, Richard Saperstein and Charlie Corwin. That package was expansive and included the 1984 original, four sequels, an animated TV series and comic books. Corwin's Original Media, which is a partnership with Dutch reality TV maker Endemol, is funding development of what the makers call an environmentally-conscious action-comedy. In the original, the protagonist is a mop-wielding simpleton named Melvin, whose trusting ways made him easy prey for gym thugs who tossed him into a vat of toxic waste. The transformation into Toxie didn't help his complexion, but gave him rippling muscles to wreak havoc on New Jersey polluters. The byproduct was that despite his misshapen appearance, the chicks finally...
