Put aside politics, education and accomplishments. Even without those, first lady Michelle Obama has blazed a fashion trail.
Sure, there are the chic elements of Jacqueline Kennedy in her style, but Michelle Obama's individual fashion deeply influences Jenna Elfman's character, first lady Emily Nash Gilchrist, on NBC's "1600 Penn."
"I love what I am wearing," Elfman says of a red two-piece outfit.
Costume designer Jennifer Eve was charged with creating a modern first lady.
"Historically all of our first ladies have reflected the times they live in," Eve tells Zap2it. "It's been an issue of class, power and femininity and what the public expects -- and what we expect our role model females to look like. It's a great, interesting time with Michelle Obama. She was the jumping-off point. I love everything about her."
Gilchrist had a career before her husband (Bill Pullman) became president.

A cardinal rule of moviemaking has always been, "Show. Don't tell."
And no one knows this truth to be more paramount than the Costume Designers Guild — these are the people who turn Rooney Mara into Lisbeth Salander and Daniel Radcliffe into Harry Potter. In other words, they've got some serious skills that go far beyond sewing, which is why last night's Costume Designers Guild Awards brought out some of Hollywood's brightest stars to celebrate some of cinema's most eye-catching achievements.
Hosted by funny girl Jane Lynch, the awards ceremony honored costume design excellence by handing out awards in seven categories divided among film, television and commercials.
Winners included:
"The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" for Excellence in Contemporary Film - Trish Summerville
"W.E." for Excellence in Period Film - Arianne Phillips
"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2" for Excellence in Fantasy Film - Jany Temime

It’s been all go with award nomination announcements for costume design over the past two weeks. Here is our round-up of the big three: BAFTA, Cdg and Oscar.
First up the BAFTA (British Academy of Film & Television Arts) Film Awards:
The Artist – Mark Bridges
Hugo – Sandy Powell
Jane Eyre – Michael O’Connor
My Week with Marilyn – Jill Taylor
Tinker, Tailor, Solider, Spy – Jacqueline Durran
Perhaps the most surprising nomination, even though it shouldn’t be, is Jacqueline Durran for Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. Overruling the costumers’ chapter vote for Anonymous (Lisy Christl), general voters chose Tinker, Tailor instead – and with good reason. Critic Guy Lodge goes into detail about the film’s costumes in this article, so we’ll not tread on his toes. One...

Despite an exhausting shooting schedule, the Glee cast had a blast playing dress up yet again — this time in red leather, glittery gloves and fedoras, for their Michael Jackson tribute episode, airing Jan. 31. "One of our challenges," explains co-costume designer Jennifer Eve, "was to take the inspiration of Michael Jackson but keep the iconic Glee characterizations."
But it's not all sparkle and no substance. According to Cory Monteith, who plays Finn, "What makes 'Michael' a great tribute episode is that it successfully carries a lot of our storylines forward while at the same time paying homage to the King of Pop."
