WME Adaptation Authorities on the IP Frenzy, a Department Shift and What’s In (and Out) in Hollywood
Hilary Zaitz Michael was Sylvie Rabineau’s first hire once her literary agency, Rabineau Wachter Sanford & Gillett, was acquired by WME eight years ago. In the years since, the two, along with partner Jill Holwager Gillett and a department that’s since expanded to 11 agents, have had a front row seat to Hollywood’s intellectual property boom, which only accelerated during the pandemic.
In fact, in the last year alone, their roster has kept them inordinately busy, from Laura Lippman’s Prom Mom and Rebecca Serle’s One Italian Summer being optioned by Universal and Paramount, respectively, to Laura Dave (The Last Thing He Told Me) and Bryan Lee O’Malley (Scott Pilgrim Takes Off) adapting their own material. The breadth of their work also prompted a rebranding of what was formerly the literary packaging department, and now is the literary media one.

Can't decide what to read? Reese Witherspoon's book club, Hello Sunshine, might just have you covered. Witherspoon's list of selections includes everything from murder mysteries to heartbreaking memoirs and beautifully cheesy romance novels, so no matter your preferences, you're likely to find something to love among them.
Witherspoon launched her book club in June 2017, kicking things off with "Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine" by Gail Honeyman. Since then, she's used her production company - also named Hello Sunshine - to turn many of these books into onscreen sensations. From "Daisy Jones & The Six" by Taylor Jenkins Reid to "The Last Thing He Told Me" by Laura Dave, more than a few of Witherspoon's book-club picks have resulted in megahit movies and TV shows.
Of course, the books hold up on their own. Whenever you're just looking to shut off your screen and curl up with some tea and a good read,...

The Last Thing He Told Me Finale: Jennifer Garner Breaks Down Hannah and Owen's Haunting Final Scene
Warning: This post contains spoilers for The Last Thing He Told Me‘s finale.
Apple TV+’s The Last Thing He Told Me ended its season Friday with an episode that largely followed the closing of the Laura Dave novel on which it was based. After Jennifer Garner’s Hannah figured out why her husband had created a false life for himself and his daughter Bailey years before, she made a deal with Bailey’s Mobbed-up maternal grandfather: If Hannah promised never to see Owen, her whistle-blowing husband (and the grandfather’s ex-son-in-law), ever again, Grandpa would make sure that...

Those trying to predict the ending of the Apple TV+ limited series “The Last Thing He Told Me” may have fallen into the trap author Laura Dave saw in the genre that initially prompted her to write the book.
The disappearance of Owen Michaels (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) from his wife Hannah (Garner) and daughter Bailey (Angourie Rice) doesn’t look good at the beginning of the series, especially when his tech company The Shop goes under investigation for fraud. Hannah and her stepdaughter Bailey spend the rest of the show unraveling the complicated reason for Owen’s disappearance, but Dave told TheWrap she wanted to upend the way these stories usually conclude.
“Often when I watch something or read something in the thriller genre [that] involves a love story, you either find out that the husband was bad and then the wife gets some sort of revenge and starts again, or the husband is good,...

Owen Michaels in The Last Thing He Told Me is the embodiment of what people who love hard do for their loved ones. Olivia Newman’s show on Apple+, based on the novel by Laura Dave, tells the story of Hannah Hall, a woman who has to go on a mission with her stepdaughter Bailey after Bailey’s father and Hannah’s husband, Owen Michaels, go missing. We don’t see Owen for most of the miniseries, except for the memories of him that Hannah relives. It’s his memories and the time Hannah spent with him that drives her to make most of the decisions, which ultimately end up doing exactly what Owen wanted—ensuring his daughter had a good life. We see him only once at the very end, and he leaves Hannah with a cryptic message. Let’s look at Owen Michaels and explore how far a...

What first seemed like a tech startup scam gone wrong has quickly unraveled the fake lives Owen and Bailey apparently have been living since she was a child. In the final moments of the episode, Hannah finds out why.

"Game of Thrones" might have ended (controversially) in 2019, but the friendship between Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Gwendoline Christie is forever. Coster-Waldau talked to Popsugar about his new series, "The Last Thing He Told Me," and when conversation turned to his former costar, who made waves in "The Sandman" and "Wednesday" last year, he couldn't help but praise Christie.
"She's just fantastic," Coster-Waldau says, revealing he has seen some of "Wednesday." "She's hilarious. She's just a very, very good actor, and smart, and incredible, and she's great. I couldn't be more thrilled that she's getting so much success now. It couldn't happen to a better person."
"Game of Thrones" fans surely don't forget that things didn't end happily in the final season for Coster-Waldau's character, Jaime Lannister, and Christie's Brienne of Tarth, who consummated their seasons-long slow-burn romance just for Jaime to leave her and die in King's Landing, crushed by rocks.

The fourth episode of The Last Thing He Told Me, directed by Olivia Newman, was released today on Apple TV, and we’re finally starting to get somewhere. The TV series based on the novel by Laura Dave stars Jennifer Garner, Angourie Rice, and Nikolaj Coster Waldau and focuses on how a stepmother named Hannah and her stepdaughter Bailey close the bridge between themselves while searching for Hannah’s husband and Bailey’s dad, Owen. After Owen went missing following a raid at The Shop, the company he used to work at, Hannah and Bailey arrived in New Austin, Texas, to look for him. In the previous episode, Bailey had remembered faint memories about visiting a church and a football field with her dad as a kid, but no proper clues could be produced from these memories. Here’s what follows in Episode 4.

In the opening scene of the Apple TV+ series The Last Thing He Told Me, an adaptation of Laura Dave’s best-selling novel about a woman who teams up with her stepdaughter to track down her missing husband, Jennifer Garner’s character smashes her cellphone. Just before the screen cracks, we see the date: April 14, the exact same day that the first episode premiered. “That was a true coincidence,” says Dave, who served as executive producer. “Someone randomly chose April 17 as the day the story would start, but 17 is my bad-luck number, so I moved it up to the 11th, which made the date on the phone during that flash-forward scene April 14.”
It was a sign of the kismet that has blessed the show from the get-go. The presence of Garner herself is another happy accident; Julia Roberts originally was set to star in the limited series produced by Reese Witherspoon...

Apple TV+’s “The Last Thing He Told Me,” adapted from the best-selling novel of the same name by Laura Dave, arrives 17 years after we bade farewell to Sydney Bristow, and critics agree it’s great to see Jennifer Garner on television again. Though she headlined HBO’s “Camping” and has a recurring role on Starz’s “Party Down,” this is Garner’s most solid Emmy vehicle since “Alias” earned her four nominations throughout its five-season run on ABC.
Artisanal woodworker Hannah Michaels (Garner) has worked to shield herself from unwanted surprises, but that carefully curated existence is thrown into disarray when her husband (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) vanishes amidst an FBI raid of his software startup. All Hannah’s given is a handwritten note requesting she protect his 16-year-old daughter (Angourie Rice). The mismatched duo must dodge investigators and a host of seedy figures while attempting to uncover the truth behind their newfound state of jeopardy.

Actress Angourie Rice had to get past Jennifer Garner’s inherent sweetness to embody her stubborn stepdaughter Bailey Michaels in the Apple TV+ television adaptation of “The Last Thing He Told Me” by Laura Dave.
The story follows Hannah Hall (Jennifer Garner) and Rice’s character Bailey as they face the mysterious disappearance of Hannah’s husband and Bailey’s dad Owen Michaels (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) right as his his tech employer comes under investigation for fraud.
Bailey didn’t fully accept Hannah when Hannah married Owen, and she still hasn’t warmed up to her stepmom, but Owen’s disappearance forces them to work together to figure out why he left and where he could have gone. The dynamic was very different from how the two actresses would normally interact.

Jennifer Garner has a complaint about Hannah’s husband in new Apple TV+ limited series, The Last Thing He Told Me.
The show follows the story of Hannah (Garner) and her husband Owen (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) who mysteriously disappears. But before he left he managed to smuggle a note to her, which said just two words: ‘protect her’, referring to his teenage daughter.
“There’s not time for ‘Xoxo love you honey, so sorry’?'” she jokingly demanded of Coster-Waldau. “It’s just ‘protect her’, period?”
“You have a point,” Coster-Waldau replied, dryly.

Another week, another strong Emmy contender making its debut just in time to make the late May eligibility cutoff. This week it’s “Barry,” the dark HBO comedy about a hitman-slash-actor co-created by and starring Emmy winner Bill Hader.
The fourth and final season of the three-time Best Comedy Series nominee premieres Sunday with two new episodes at 10/9c on HBO and HBO Max. The season opens with Barry (Hader) in prison after he was turned into the police by his former acting teacher and mentor Gene Cousineau (Best Comedy Supporting Actor Emmy winner Henry Winkler) in the Season 3 finale. Hader is again pulling quadruple duty as writer, director, producer and star, and as he steps behind the camera for all eight episodes, he delivers a swan song fans won’t forget any time soon. That is why “Barry” is the awards contender to watch this weekend.

Jennifer Garner really wanted the starring role in “The Last Thing He Told Me,” Hello Sunshine’s television adaptation of Laura Dave‘s novel of the same name.
At the series’ Los Angeles premiere on Thursday, Garner told Variety she went after the role of Hannah when original star Julia Roberts dropped out of the project. “I had to just do anything in my power to plead my case,” Garner said.
As a fan of the novel, Garner expressed her excitement for the adaptation starring Roberts: “I thought ‘Oh, she’s going to be amazing!’ I love that story I can’t wait to watch.” But once the role became available, Garner knew she had to pursue the part.
“I just wrote letters to Laura advocating for myself and talking about what the book meant to me and what the role [meant], what I saw in the role and the ways that I felt,...

Jennifer Garner is not only starring in new Apple TV+ series The Last Thing He Told Me, but also lands her first executive producer credit with the project, serving as EP alongside close friend Reese Witherspoon.
“I think the older you get and the more you’ve been kicking around for 30 years, you naturally become more central to the collaborative process,” Garner told The Hollywood Reporter at the show’s Los Angeles premiere on Thursday of taking on the producing role. She recalled reading the scripts aloud in the backyard of married co-creators Laura Dave and Josh Singer, then “over and over again tore them up, had heated discussions, but then they actually made revisions based on our conversations. They were so open to hearing my thoughts and ideas and so nuanced in the ways they made the shifts because of our conversations, that I was kind of blown away.

Reese Witherspoon stepped out for the Los Angeles premiere of her new series, "The Last Thing He Told Me," on April 13, nearly three weeks after she and husband Jim Toth announced their divorce. Dressed in a black sparkly dress, Witherspoon was all smiles as she posed for photos with the show's cast and crew, including Jennifer Garner, author Laura Dave, and showrunner Josh Singer (who is also Dave's husband).
The show is based on Dave's novel of the same name and is produced by Witherspoon's Hello Sunshine company. It stars Garner, Angourie Rice, Aisha Tyler, and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau.
Witherspoon, 47, and Toth, 52, were married for almost 12 years before announcing their split on March 24. Apple TV+ brings the newest thriller miniseries, “The Last Thing He Told Me,” based on Laura Dave’s novel of the same name and directed by Olivia Newman. This week, Apple dropped the first two episodes of the miniseries, and so far, the pace feels rather slow. We hope Newman’s series picks up the pace soon if it hopes to keep the viewers interested. At the outset of Apple TV+’s The Last Thing He Told Me, teenage Bailey has very little patience and/or time for her stepmother, Hannah. But everything changes when Bailey’s father/Hannah’s husband Owen disappears, and the two women are forced to work together to figure out what’s happened.
Therefore nailing the prickly female relationship at the center of the series, which is based on Laura Dave’s 2021 novel and which premieres Friday, was crucial. The only issue? Jennifer Garner (Alias), who plays Hannah, and Angourie Rice (Mare of Easttown), who plays Bailey, kinda adored each other on sight.

Angourie Rice is an expert at playing a teenager, even though she turned 22 this past January. Last year, the actor starred as the teenage version of Rebel Wilson in Netflix's "Senior Year," as well as a hilariously driven student in the irreverent comedy "Honor Society." Rice also appeared in the McU's Spider-Man movies as Betty Brant, and in 2021's "Mare of Easttown" she played Siobhan, Mare's stubborn daughter. Now, in Apple TV+ series "The Last Thing He Told Me," based on Laura Dave's bestselling novel of the same name, Rice stars as reeling high schooler Bailey opposite of Jennifer Garner, who plays her stepmom, Hannah, whom she can't connect with, and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who plays her missing dad, Owen.

Jennifer Garner is making her return to television in “The Last Thing He Told Me”, a limited series based on the bestseller by Laura Dave.
Garner plays Hannah, a woman who must forge a relationship with her 16-year-old stepdaughter Bailey (played by Angourie Rice) in order to find the truth about why her husband has mysteriously disappeared.
In addition to marking Garner’s first TV series since starring as super-spy Sydney Bristow on “Alias”, “The Last Thing He Told Me” also sees her reuniting with Victor Garber, who played Sydney’s father.

Jennifer Garner’s star turn came courtesy of “Alias,” the influential J.J. Abrams drama about Sydney Bristow, a grad student moonlighting as a sultry spy. Her agency? A sinister syndicate masquerading as a governmental skunkworks project, as Sydney and her colleagues toil unaware they’ve been working for the bad guys. The pilot opens on Sydney, battered and bloody after being captured and tortured by a rival faction. Then, it hops back in time to show how Sydney’s once-simple life became so treacherous, a journey that reveals to her how little she actually knows about the people closest to her.

Jennifer Garner stars as Hannah in Apple TV+'s "The Last Thing He Told Me," and her character ends up in some pretty stressful situations. In the show, which is based on the bestselling novel of the same name, Hannah's life turns into a nightmare when her husband Owen (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) mysteriously disappears, leaving her to care for and protect her stepdaughter Bailey (Angourie Rice). But for Garner, filming the show was a dream, and that's partially because she got to reunite with her "Alias" costar Victor Garber. From the outside, The Last Thing He Told Me seems like a surefire streaming hit. It has a widely-beloved, A-list lead in Jennifer Garner; the backing of Reese Witherspoon's Hello Sunshine, the production company behind Daisy Jones & The Six and Tiny Beautiful Things; and rich source material in Laura Dave's mystery-thriller, which spent 65 weeks on the New York Times Best Seller list in 2021 and 2022. But what should be a slam dunk for Apple TV+ is instead a bloated snooze-fest.

With any new entry into a well-trod subgenre, it's always challenging to make the material feel a little fresher and more unique compared to what's come before. A number of thrillers have had hapless families discover the father/husband had a secret, dark past, making husbands secret murderers, reformed former criminals ("A History of Violence"), cheaters, liars with other families ("Frequent Flyer") or even secretive agents or heroes (humorously subverted in "Mr. and Mrs. Smith"). It's a tried-and-true background for a thriller, but the setup always presents a unique challenge: how could this very specific trope be pivoted to stand out in a crowded field?

Early in their courtship, Hannah (Jennifer Garner) shows Owen (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) around her woodturning shop. “Your first lesson is that a good piece of wood always has one thing, one quality, that defines it,” she says, standing by a shelf full of assorted blocks waiting to be transformed into delicate bowls or urns. He likes the idea, and takes it a step further. “You could probably say the same thing about most people,” he muses. “At the end of the day, one thing defines them.”
Whether that’s true of actual people is a question for philosophers or psychologists to sort out. It’s certainly true of these two, though, and of nearly everyone else in Apple TV+’s The Last Thing He Told Me. In certain lights, their singleness of purpose looks refreshing, even inspiring; it turns what could have been a straightforward tale of suspense into an unexpectedly tender celebration of love.

Some are more significant than others, and when Hannah's husband disappears, leaving only a terse message behind, "Protect her," she must team up with Owen's daughter, Bailey, to discover the truth of his disappearance.
This sets up a situation in which Bailey must rely on and trust the stepmother she dislikes, and Hannah must become the mother Bailey needs.
The Last Thing He Told Me is a new Apple TV+ series based on the bestselling book by Laura Dave.
Dave adapted the book for screen alongside her husband, Josh Singer (Fringe), with Hello Sunshine's Reese Witherspoon and Lauren Neustadter.
Jennifer Garner is Hannah, Angourie Rice is Bailey, and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau is husband and father, Owen.
The series is being promoted as a bit of a thriller, and it's easy to understand why, but it's important to stress that it's as much, if not more, a family drama.

It took a while for some of Lauren Neustadter’s projects to see the light of day. But now a host of Hello Sunshine projects, some from deals made during or before the pandemic, are out in the world.
The production company’s president of film and television and key creative partner of founder Reese Witherspoon saw “Daisy Jones & the Six,” adapted from a book by Taylor Jenkins Reid, debut on Amazon’s Prime Video. April will see two more book-based limited series, “Tiny Beautiful Things“ starring Kathryn Hahn and “The Last Thing He Told Me” starring Jennifer Garner, the former based off of Cheryl Strayed’s book of advice column responses and the latter based off Laura Dave’s novel.
“The process of developing is incredibly gratifying, but also incredibly intricate, and it requires a lot of attention to detail,” Neustadter told TheWrap for this week’s Office With a View.

I was telling a love story of Hannah and her new stepdaughter. We wanted to honor that story in the series.” Watch our interview with Dave and Singer above.
