Netflix historical drama “Elesin Oba, The King’s Horseman,” will become the first Yoruba-language film to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Produced by Mo Abudu’s EbonyLife Films and Netflix, the film — which will play in the Special Presentations section — is based on real-life events in Nigeria in 1943, and set in the Oyo Empire, in which the King’s horseman, Elesin Oba, must commit ritual suicide to follow his deceased king into the afterlife.
However, his best intentions are derailed by his sexual desires, which leads to catastrophic consequences and ends in a deadly clash with the British rulers of the day. The horseman is unable to fulfil his ultimate commitment to the king, leaving his spirit to roam the earth, spelling doom for the land and its people.

Idris Elba was pretty good in Guillermo del Toro’s “Pacific Rim”, even if 90% of the stuff they had him saying made me cringe. Then again, whenever someone opened their mouth in that movie, I cringed, but whatever. Point is, Elba still managed to be pretty good in it, and if he can polish that turd of a character, you can expect he’ll slay in a movie about something as important as Nelson Mandela’s life. Yes, I know, it’s obviously Oscar bait. But from the looks of this trailer, it’s deservedly so, and I think there’s something to be said about that. Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom is based on South African President Nelson Mandela’s autobiography of the same name, which chronicles his early life, coming of age, education and 27 years in prison before becoming President and working to rebuild the country’s once segregated society.

It usually takes more than a week for a full-on trailer to follow up a film's teaser vid, but since yesterday was the 95th birthday of the unconquerable Nelson Mandela himself, The Weinstein Company decided to make an exception. And what a celebration it was.
In the biopic, Idris Elba stars as Nelson Mandela, the South African revolutionary who stood up against an oppressive, divisive government and spent 27 years in prison before being released and later chosen as the nation's first democratically-elected president.
Whereas the teaser for "Mandela" was decidedly optimistic and sort of all's-well-that-ends-well-ish with him romping around a meadow with happy children, this trailer for the Justin Chadwick-directed pic is much grittier and more consequential in nature.
Based on Mandela's own written autobiography of the same name, the film chronicles the Nobel Peace Prize winner's journey from a young village boy onto becoming one of the world's most revered leaders.

Idris Elba as Nelson Mandela? Sure, why not. I’m reasonably certain Idris Elba can play just about anyone and make it convincing. It’s all in the delivery, isn’t it? And in this first teaser trailer for “The Other Boleyn Girl” director Justin Chadwick’s “Mandela: The Long Walk to Freedom”, it sure sounds like Elba has the delivery down pat. Of course this is just a teaser trailer and there isn’t much here, so it would be nice if we could see more. (And of course I’m assuming that’s actually Elba’s voice we’re hearing, reading something Mandela said, and not actually Mandela. I could be wrong, of course.) A chronicle of Nelson Mandela’s life journey from his childhood in a rural village through to his inauguration as the first democratically elected president of South Africa. Starring Idris Elba, Naomie Harris,...

Man, oh man, we're calling it now: Justin Chadwick's Nelson Mandela biopic, "Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom," is just going to own us all.
The first teaser trailer for The Weinstein Company's latest gut-wrencher is in, and as simple and obscure as it is — Idris Elba as the aging South African civil rights hero is shown walking along an open meadow pathway before a group of children start prancing around him — it's also effective at bringing on all the feels.
Mandela, the first democratically elected president of the post-apartheid nation who went onto win the Nobel Peace Prize after being imprisoned for 27 years, is well-known and frequently referenced for his many words of wisdom and bravery ... and this teaser nicely efforts to honor that.
The narrator declares, "I have walked a long walk to freedom. It has been a lonely road, and it is not over yet. No one...

While it doesn.t have a lot of thrills, Dark Tide does manage to capture some tension thanks to incredible underwater sequences that show the divers playing with some very large sharks. Unfortunately, the film suffers from a dragging pace and lack of chemistry between its cast. Directed by John Stockwell (who brought us the underwater thriller Into the Blue) and written by Ronnie Christensen and Amy Sorlie, the film stars Halle Berry, Olivier Martinez, Ralph Brown, Mark Elderkin, Luke Tyler, Thoko Ntshinga, and Sizwe Msutu. The film opens with .shark whisperer. Kate Mathieson (Berry) shooting a documentary with her husband Jeff (Martinez) off the coast of South Africa. Kate is one of the only shark experts in the...

Chicago – Poor Halle Berry. Apparently ravishing good looks, fine acting chops and an Academy Award for Best Actress aren’t enough to earn decent roles in Hollywood. Since her triumphant turn in 2001’s “Monster’s Ball,” Berry has had only two big screen roles that managed to hint at her gifts as an actress. Yet “Things We Lost in the Fire” and “Frankie & Alice” were largely ignored by critics and audiences.
Sadly, Berry’s name has gradually become synonymous with cinematic turkeys like 2004’s “Catwoman,” for which she graciously accepted a Razzie award while delivering a hilariously self-deprecating speech. That was a terrible film, to be sure, but it wasn’t nearly as depressing as John Stockwell’s PG-13-rated would-be blockbuster, “Dark Tide. It was deservedly released on Blu-ray less than a month after its alleged and seemingly nonexistent theatrical run. Even Berry’s most devoted fans will want...

The first clip has surfaced (and quickly sinks) from Wrekin Hill Entertainment and Lionsgate's Dark Tide, their shark thriller from Turistas director John Stockwell. The clip is extremely weak even by weak standards. But I digress, there are two real reasons why we're all going to watch this and they can be thoroughly enjoyed after the break (and below the clip). When you're done enlarging them (this article is wrong on so many levels), click the above new image for the entire hi-res gallery that was just uploaded. The flick leads off with a three-week Ultra VOD window on March 8th with a theatrical release on March 30th, culminating in a packaged media and Digital Download release, the Halle Berry thriller will head to home video on April 8. Dark Tide also stars Ralph Brown, Adi Shankar, Luke Stein, Mark Elderkin, Thoko Ntshinga and Sizwe Msutu.

Horror fans will no doubt recognize the name of director John Stockwell from his most famous turn in 1983′s Christine, in which he played good guy Dennis. In the intervening years, Stockwell has done all right for himself behind the camera, helming Crazy/Beautiful in 2001, Blue Crush in 2002, and Turiastas in 2006, and while he may be most remembered for facing down a menacing growling Plymouth Fury, in Dark Tide, coming out later this year from Lionsgate, he is taking on evil of the aquatic kind.

A promo trailer for "Dark Tide" has hit the web. In this newly-released video, Halle Berry portrays a modern-day adventurer who is drawn to very close encounters with mighty white sharks. The video gets more intense as it ends with a scene where a raging wave sweeps the ship that carries her and the crew, leaving them surrounded by sharks in the ocean.
"Dark Tide" centers its story on Berry's Sara. Having had a near-fatal incident with a great white shark a year ago, Sara challenges her courage by joining a monsoon season voyage, which eventually becomes an escalating series of terrifying underwater confrontations with the predators.
This John Stockwell-directed movie also has Olivier Martinez take the role of Sara's husband. Ralph Brown, Luke Tyler and Mark Elderkin are among other supporting stars for the action thriller film which is expected to hit theaters across the United States later this year.

On sale at both Berlin and Cannes by Im Global, there's still no distribution for John Stockwell's shark thriller Dark Tide, which stars Halle Berry, Olivier Martinez, Ralph Brown, Adi Shankar, Luke Stein, Mark Elderkin, Thoko Ntshinga and Sizwe Msutu.
