July Jung made one of the best recent debuts of recent times in Korean cinema back in 2014 with her “A Girl at My Door”, a gritty and superbly acted social drama which screened in the Un Certain Regard category at Cannes Film Festival. It went on to receive much critical acclaim and multiple awards at film festivals, with both the director and lead actress Bae Doona receiving praise and accolades for their work. Jung instantly became a director to watch out for but little did we know that it would take eight years before she would step behind the camera again for “Next Sohee”, which closed the International Critics' Week at Cannes this year.

Halle Bailey made quite a splash at the London premiere of The Little Mermaid on Monday, where she, alongside her co-stars Jonah Hauer-King, Melissa McCarthy, Jacob Tremblay, Javier Bardem, Daveed Diggs, as well as director Rob Marshall, walked the blue carpet to promote their new movie.
Bailey held hands with Hauer-King for some of the photos.
The 23-year-old, who portrays Ariel in the live-action remake of the Disney classic, attended the premiere wearing a stunning custom white gown by Miss Sohee. The dress featured a shell-like neckline adorned with silver gems that paid homage to her character’s signature seashell bra, a sheer backless detail, and a mermaid-style train.
Styled by Nichole Good, Bailey paired the look with a crystal-embellished silver headpiece and pearl earrings.
The singer-turned-actress later took to social media to express her gratitude for the London premiere, saying “big thank you London for celebrating our film tonight with us 10 more days.

Jung Ju-ri’s “Next Sohee” is cleaved in half by a tragic death. Indeed, the incident at the center of Jung’s sobering South Korean drama is so shocking that it tilts what initially bills itself like a workplace drama into a full-blown investigative thriller, replete with whistleblowers, unhelpful witnesses, and, true to that genre, a wearied detective eager to solve a case no one else seems all that bothered by. The pairing of such incongruent two halves would, in lesser hands, be cause for worry. Instead, Jung sutures the two seamlessly and in so doing makes a bold case for the criminal malpractice at the heart of contemporary exploitative labor practices.
But before “Next Sohee” takes us on its murder investigation story arc, it introduces us to its eponymous protagonist. Jung’s title may be reducing Sohee (a wide-eyed Kim Si-eun) to one in a long list — there will...

Good things come to those who wait, and so it is with Next Sohee, the blunt and powerful new film from director July Jung, which bowed at the Cannes Film Festival this spring, following eight years after her sensational debut, A Girl at My Door. Teaming up once more with actress Bae Doona, Jung sets her sights on the systems and circumstances that contribute to workplace abuse, specifically young students who are taken advantage of by shady 'externship' programs. Bad things, meanwhile, come in threes. High school student Sohee -- a splendid Kim Si-eun in her first major role -- is initially thrilled to be drafted into her school's 'externship' program, which places her in a job in a call center where she can earn...

Just the second feature by South Korea’s July Jung, Next Sohee won her the Best Director award at this year’s Fantasia International Film Festival and came second in the Audience Awards vote for Best Asian Film. The closing film of the festival, it’s a blistering exploration of the exploitation of school children through work experience programmes, presented as a drama in two parts. Having very much admired Jung’s previous film, A Girl At My Door, I was delighted to get the chance to speak to her at the festival and ask her a few questions about it.
Since seeing the film, I have spoken to people in several countries who have told me that the same kind of exploitation happens where they are, so I ask her how she first came across the issue.

She’s dancing when we first see her. Wearing headphones. We can’t hear the music but we can see her response to it, the energy in her movements, the passion. She’s good – the best in the group, its other members will later agree. She’s full of life, but by the halfway point in July Jung’s incisive and devastating film, she will be dead.
Next Sohee screened as part of 2022’s Fantasia International Film Festival, an environment in which it’s not unusual to see films about the tragedy of lost life, about murders following which there are intensive investigations. Sohee (Kim Si-eun) is not murdered – she takes her own life – but there are multiple culpable parties. Shouldn’t this tragedy receive the same kind of investigation and follow-up? Shouldn’t people be held to account?

And here I thought capitalism’s hold on the American education system by way of unpaid internships was bad. As documented in July Jung’s extern drama Next Sohee, what’s happening in South Korea is even worse. It all comes down to incentives—not for the children, but the institutions profiting off their labor. When big companies with huge executive payrolls (since managers need managers who also need managers while hourly employees become statistical cogs in the slave machine) need cheap and naïve workers to fill call center desks or factory floors, they knock on the school board’s door offering positions. Since districts’ budgets are beholden to quantitative competition, schools say “thank you,” blindly assign their students, and threaten that quitting isn’t an option. Such “disgrace” is monetarily unacceptable.

Jung July makes a powerful comeback after eight years of break in directing with another strong socially-engaged mystery drama, “Next Sohee”. Premiering in Cannes’ La Semaine de la Critique side section, where it received a several minute-long standing ovation, her sophomore film navigates around two perspectives: the story of Sohee (Kim Si-eun), a high-school girl who starts her first job at a call-center desk, and detective Oh Yoo-jin (Bae Doona), who takes up an investigation in which she hopes to untangle the mystery behind the company’s toxic environment that leads to a tragic end.
The film, distinctively divided into two narrative parts, slowly unravels as a profound meditation on the solitude of young people in Korean society and their lack of agency to make any impactful change; a story good as any Korean recent title, however, Jung’s solid grip of her storytelling rhythm and sympathetic gaze toward characters...

"This train can go no further." Well Go USA has debuted an official trailer for the impending release of the epic Korean zombie film Train to Busan, which opens this week in Us theaters. The film is one of the most expensive Korean productions to date, with some crazy VFX surrounding a zombie outbreak in Korea. A group of survivors attempt to take the last train from Seoul down to Busan, hoping they can escape the zombies, but of course they run into more problems along the way. The film stars Gong Yoo, Jung Yu-mi, Ma Dong-seok and Ahn So-hee. I saw this in Cannes and it's fun but not the best zombie movie I've seen. The action is amusing and it reminded me of Snowpiercer, but with zombies and much cheesier. All aboard! Here's the official Us trailer for Yeon Sang-ho's Train to Busan, direct from Well Go's YouTube:...

Animation maestro Yeon Sang-Ho‘s first live-action feature, Train To Busan a.k.a. Busan Bound, its teaser was released last week. Starring Gong Yoo, Ma Dong-Seok, Jeong Yu-Mi, Choi Woo-Shik and Ahn So-Hee, it directly follows the events of Yeon’s third animated film Seoul Station ( which is currently in post-production) , as a zombie plague grips the passengers on a train heading from Seoul to Busan.
Director Yeon broke onto the scene with the animated title The King of Pigs, which netted numerous awards at domestic and international film festivals. Train To Busan will feature as a midnight screening at the 69th Cannes Film Festival, according to Kofic.
Heart-throb Gong Yoo, who proved his box office clout with the spy thriller The Suspect, plays a father trying to save his daughter from the zombie virus that finds its way on to the train bound for Busan.

A man sobbing in the shower whilst a female body strangled to death, in an apartment waiting for repossession. Naked and unflinching from the beginning, The King of Pigs (2011) tracks two friends Kyung-Min and Jong-Suk, who rendezvous after fifteen years of mutual silence. Upon reuniting, they reminisce about their middle school days over soju, with flashbacks revealing their tough ordeals.
Director Yeon Sang-ho had a terrific debut with The King of Pigs winning numerous awards at domestic and international film festivals, and his more ambitious follow-up The Fake (2013), which deals with religious cults in Korea, was even more successful garnering enormous acclaim around the globe and plenty of festival invitations.
Following The Fake, Director Yeon went into production on his zombie apocalypse animation Seoul Station, which follows a man sleeping rough in the major railway station in Seoul who begins to exhibit bizarre symptoms that sweep across the city, triggering pandemonium.
