A creator known for his scary YouTube videos will get an opportunity to reinvigorate the “found footage” subgenre of horror filmmaking. Kane Parsons, the 17-year-old behind the Kane Pixels channel, will direct a feature film inspired by the liminal space known as The Backrooms.
The Backrooms horror film will be directed by Parsons during his summer break from school. A24, Chernin Entertainment, 21 Laps Entertainment, and Atomic Monster will helm the project, which will be based on a screenplay from Roberto Patino. The film will have a powerful group of executive producers, including Stranger Things vet Shawn Levy and seasoned horror producer James Wan.

Some of today’s biggest genre companies – A24, James Wan‘s Atomic Monster, the Stranger Things makers at 21 Laps, and Planet of the Apes producers Chernin Entertainment – have joined forces on a new project called The Backrooms, which is set to mark the feature directorial debut of 17-year-old director and VFX artist Kane Parsons.
The Backrooms is based on a series of viral videos Parsons has been releasing through his YouTube channel Kane Pixels over the last year. There are currently sixteen Backrooms videos on the channel – with the number of total views being well past 100 million – and if you were to splice them together they would reach feature length, but the feature version of The Backrooms is going to be something entirely new. The screenplay for the feature has been written by Roberto Patino (Dmz). Parsons is still in school, so production will have to wait for his summer vacation to begin.

The YouTube-to-feature-filmmaking pipeline will only become more common in the years to come as young creators who develop their voice on the platform get scouted for bigger projects, but for now, each major success story is making headlines. Summer jobs for high schoolers are getting a lot cooler.
IndieWire has confirmed that Kane Parsons, the 17-year-old creator of “The Backrooms” YouTube series, has been tapped by A24, Chernin Entertainment, 21 Laps Entertainment, and Atomic Monster to direct a feature-length adaptation of the series. The film is being written by “Dmz” creator Roberto Patino, who will also serve as an executive producer on the project. Production will take place during Parson’s summer vacation.
“The Backrooms” became a viral phenomenon in 2022 when a YouTube user named Kane Pixels (which has been revealed to be an alias for Parsons), uploaded a nine-minute found footage video of people exploring creepy empty rooms. The video capitalized on the Internet’s fascination with liminal spaces, a.k.a. spaces that exist adjacent to our reality without being a part of it. The nightmarish and surreal bit of Internet folklore about a never-ending maze of empty fluorescent hallways known as the Backrooms is getting a proper film adaptation. A collaboration between four different production companies including A24, the film will be the feature-length product of 17-year-old Youtuber Kane Parsons. Roberto Patino, the showrunner of HBO Max's "Dmz" and a writer and executive producer of HBO's "Westworld," will pen the script. Shawn Levy's 21 Laps Entertainment, the production company behind "Stranger Things," as well as James Wan's Atomic Monster, which most recently produced "M3GAN," are also on board to finance the project. In addition, Chernin Entertainment, which has historically produced for 20th Century Fox but is currently working with Netflix on releases like "Fear Street," is signed on.

TV Academy Chairman and CEO Frank Scherma said this morning that the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards nominations would reflect only “a fraction” of the immense talent on the small screen this year.
He was so on the nose about that, sadly.
2022 Emmy Nominations: Deadline’s Complete Coverage
Yet again, TV Academy voters giveth and TV Academy voters taketh away, at least some of the hopes and dreams for the latter who didn’t make the cut this morning. Unveiled by Blockbuster co-stars Jb Smoove and Melissa Fumero early (but not too early) Tuesday, the nominations certainly put a spring in the step of Ted Lasso, Jon Stewart and Squid Game.
For Yellowstone and Reservation Dogs, however, not so much.
Why There Won’t Be Emmy Nominations This Year For Shows Like ‘The Crown’, ‘The Boys’ & ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’
There’s no host yet, but the 74th Primetime Emmys will air live at 8 p.

HBO Max’s new dystopian drama Dmz is based on the comic book series of the same name. Although the source material was released early in the 21st century, its themes are still relevant in the Covid landscape.

Benjamin Bratt isn’t sure whether he would be able to rise up as a leader in dystopian future like his character, Parco Delgado, in “Dmz.” “It’s tough enough being a dad and a good one at that. It takes a lot of focus, a lot of concentration, a lot of work and a lot of invested time and love, but it is my favorite focus at the moment,” he tells Gold Derby during our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video interview above). But the idea of whether he could do such a thing reinforced something that he truly loved about this story. “It’s when circumstances press upon you enough where it forces you outside of your own perception of yourself and into actions that you might not have otherwise undertaken, where true leaders rise to the occasion.”

“We’re telling a story about New York, which if you take a 10 cross section of New York, you are going to get all people from all walks of life, from all faiths, and we needed to do that justice,” Dmz showrunner Roberto Patino says of the decision to look at the periphery of the acclaimed comic for its March 17 launching HBO Max adaptation.

Roberto Patino acknowledges that the dystopian themes of “Dmz” have their roots in films like “The Warriors” and “Escape from New York.” But the showrunner wanted to do something completely different with those elements. “We want it to run in the opposite direction of the dystopian tropes and we want to tell a story of an upward slope and a unity of a new start,” he tells us during our recent webchat (watch the video interview above). He also made sure not to get lost or hung up in how America got to the point that it is in the show. “I don’t care how we might get to civil war. That’s not what this show is about. This is a story of people coming together, a story of hope and a story of rebirth.”

In early 2020, Rosario Dawson was acting in “Dmz,” a dystopian adaptation of the DC Comics series about a war-torn version of Manhattan in the midst of a second Civil War. When Covid shutdowns hit, “Dmz” was put on hold, and by the time it resumed last year, Dawson had already acted in “Dopesick,” another timely miniseries about tears in the fabric of American society. By the time she took the stage after the premiere of the first episode of “Dmz” at SXSW last week, she had spent so long contemplating such consequential themes that the weight of the moment overwhelmed her.
“I’m so emotional right now,” she said, welling up. “This is so real for so many people in the world around us.”

This article contains spoilers for Dmz episode 1.
There’s never really an ideal time to premiere a TV show about war.
Invariably, someone somewhere on the globe is experiencing the brutal destruction of armed combat at any given moment, making a fictionalized depiction of it a dicey proposition for any storyteller. This is a lesson that HBO Max limited series Dmz understands quite intimately.
The DC comic upon which HBO Max’s series is based was first released in 2005 and served as a commentary on its era’s wars in the Middle East. The comic’s storyline, which imagined a second American civil war turning Manhattan into a desolate demilitarized zone between two warring factions, could have just as easily been set in Baghdad, Iraq or Kabul, Afghanistan. It was a way to present to the Western world that their worst case post-apocalyptic scenario was someone else’s unavoidable present.

The futuristic live-action, four-part series "Dmz" from Roberto Patino, Ava DuVernay and Warner Bros. Television, stars Rosario Dawson and Benjamin Bratt based on the DC Comics' 'Vertigo' imprint title, streaming March 17, 2022 on HBO Max:

When the comic series "Dmz" arrived nearly 20 years ago, it felt like a work of science fiction. But in 2022, its basic premise -- a second American civil war has divided the nation, with warring armies stalling out on either side of Manhattan -- feels unsettling. Like something that could actually happen. A subject that needed reinvention and retooling for a scarier, more turbulent time.
Showrunner Roberto Patino (whose credits include "Westworld" and "Sons of Anarchy") knew this. Gone is the basic thrust of the comic series, with its focus on action and the ongoing war. In its place is a new story...

It’s not hard to see why a story about a U.S. at war with itself might have seemed especially piquant to producers over the past several years. And, indeed, “Dmz,” HBO Max’s new limited series based on a comic serial, feels capital-r Relevant, as if trying to fit in a civics textbook’s worth of ideas about who we are and what citizenship means into four episodes’ worth of action.
It’s not always seamless. Indeed, the pivots between different areas of “Dmz’s” universe often land thuddingly. We’re following Rosario Dawson’s Alma Ortega, who lost track of her son during a rapid evacuation of New York City as civil war began; some eight years later, she’s broken into what is now the wilds of Manhattan, abandoned by authorities and governed by warlords, in order to find him. Based on the DC Comics series from Riccardo Burchielli and Brian Wood of the same name, the demilitarized zone of Roberto Patino’s four-part HBO series “Dmz” can be full of surprises. It’s what we know as Manhattan, after a civil war between the Free States of America and the United States of America. We initially see the Dmz as a place of ruins, of sprawling weeds taking over once busy intersections, but then realize the possibility it shows.

They say the devil is in the details, and that is certainly true for the dystopia dazzle that is Ava DuVernay and Roberto Patino’s Dmz.
Having just had its world premiere at SXSW today and set to debut on HBO Max on March 17, the Rosario Dawson, Hoon Lee and Benjamin Bratt-led adaptation of Brian Wood and Riccardo Burchielli’s comic of the same name can be best summarized in the massive graffiti splayed across a dilapidated Manhattan building in the series – “We’re Still Here.”
Yes, in the agile sociological hands of 13th and When They See Us director DuVernay, it is all still here, even more so in a further broken America. The racial, gender, class warfare and constant betrayal that has been soaked in the soil since before America even became a country is still here in the near future of Dmz and the wound is...

In “Dmz,” the first thing you’ll notice are the colors. Moonlight blue floods the sparse room where Alma (Rosario Dawson) sleeps between shifts. A sickly green shades the bathroom where she’s detoxed before seeing patients. Bright lights smack against black edges in the stadium serving as a detainment center for people trying to cross the border illegally. These opening shots provide a stark impression of an America nearly a decade into its second civil war. Alma works in Brooklyn, as she waits for a path into Manhattan, which is now a demilitarized zone caught between the remaining United States and the so-called Free States of America. It’s also the last place she saw her son, Christian.
New York City, she’s told, is dangerous. The 300,000 non-citizens still inhabiting the island have no government, no police, no laws. They were either stranded or chose to live in anarchy.

“Bel Air” is about to feature a “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” reunion — of sorts. Daphne Maxwell Reid, who played Will’s aunt on later seasons of “Fresh Prince,” and Vernee Watson-Johnson, who recurred as Will’s mom on the show, are returning to Bel Air — in guest starring roles for Episode 9 of Peacock’s new drama.
Maxwell Reid and Watson-Johnson portrayed Aunt Viv and Viola “Vy” Smith, respectively, in the original series. For their upcoming guest roles on “Bel-Air,” the two will play “Helen” and “Janice,” members of the Art Council Board of Trustee.
Peacock’s “Bel-Air” reimagines the beloved “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” sitcom — with a new lens on Will’s (Jabari Banks) complicated journey from West Philadelphia to the gated mansions of Bel-Air. The series, inspired by Morgan Cooper’s viral trailer, is executive produced by Will Smith — as well as director/co-writer Cooper and showrunners T.J. Brady and Rasheed Newson.

Rosario Dawson is willing to risk anything to find her son in the first trailer for HBO Max’s “Dmz.”
The four-part limited series, based on the DC graphic novel of the same name, tells the story of a near future where America is embroiled in a bitter civil war, leaving Manhattan a demilitarized zone — hence the title of the series. The show chronicles the journey of fierce medic Alma Ortega (Dawson), who saves lives while desperately searching for her lost son.
In the trailer released on Monday — which you can watch above — Dawson’s Alma explains that she and her son were split apart during the evacuation out of Manhattan before it became a demilitarized zone. Even though the city is now an active war zone, she decides she must go back in search of him.

More than 100 DGA members and industry decision-makers attended a Directors Guild’s summit Saturday that examined the underrepresentation of Latinos in the film and TV industry, and ways to increase their numbers. Latinos and Hispanics make up 18.5% of the U.S. population, but far less than half that percentage directed episodes of dramatic TV shows last season.
“The chronic lack of inclusion by the studios and networks is something our guild has been fighting against for a very long time, as we’ve pushed for meaningful change,” DGA president Lesli Linka Glatter said in her opening remarks. “It’s mind-boggling to think that despite such a high Latino population in this country, especially here in the industry’s home of Los Angeles, that so many of the gatekeepers continue to bury their heads in the sand on this issue. Last season, our annual inclusion report found that just 7% of dramatic...

Progress continues to be incremental in front of and behind television cameras in Hollywood. An October 2021 UCLA Television Diversity study examined 461 scripted television shows airing or streaming during the 2019-20 season. It revealed that only 32.1 percent of scripted broadcast network shows, 28.1 percent on cable TV, and 26.8 percent on streaming platforms, featured majority non-white casts. Each category saw an increase of roughly 2-3 percent over the previous season. In summary, despite popular claims of a “renaissance” for Bipoc creatives in Hollywood (especially for African Americans), there’s still much work to be done on the matter of inclusion in all job areas.
As their study states, the Bipoc group is not proportionately represented to their share of the U.S. population, even though audience interest in programming with talent that represents the nation’s diversity, continues to increase.
When Bipoc narratives are controlled by non-bipoc creatives, character story lines may lack authenticity,...

Rosario Dawson is set as a series regular in Dopesick, Hulu’s eight-episode limited series based on Beth Macy’s bestselling book. The project is from The Handmaid’s Tale executive producer Warren Littlefield and Touchstone Television.
