Monkey Man is an action thriller about one man’s quest for vengeance against the corrupt leaders who murdered his mother and continue to victimize the poor and powerless systemically.
Inspired by the legend of Hanuman, an icon embodying strength and courage, Monkey Man stars Patel as Kid, an anonymous young man who ekes out a meager living in an underground fight club where, night after night, wearing a gorilla mask, he is beaten bloody by more popular fighters for cash.

Dev Patel’s bone-crunching action film, Monkey Man, is swinging onto digital platforms faster than Atefeh Safaei can throw a punch. According to the film’s official Twitter account, Monkey Man comes to digital to rent or buy tomorrow, April 23rd! Despite underperforming at the box office with $28M+, Monkey Man is a hit with critics and fans. On Rotten Tomatoes, Patel’s directorial debut is 88% on the Tomatometer, with an 84% Fresh Audience Score.
Competition is fierce at the box office in 2024, with original films struggling to make a dent. Monkey Man opened alongside The First Omen, one of the horror genre’s most well-reviewed films in recent memory. Still, Monkey Man‘s most formidable opponent is Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, which reigns supreme with $485M+. Dev Patel directs, co-writes and stars in Monkey Man, an ultraviolent revenge thriller which was rescued from Netflix and given a theatrical release by producer Jordan Peele. A blend of John Wick-style violence, Indian mythology and a palpable Slumdog atmosphere, it’s an exciting debut for Patel that delivers several pulse-quickening punches and then rips out your arteries for good measure afterwards.
The script makes good use of an unconventional structure, whereby we meet a character known as “Kid” (Patel) as he attempts to execute a poorly thought-out revenge plan against local corrupt cop Rana (Sikandar Kher), in the fictional Indian city of Yatana (effectively standing in for Mumbai). After the attempt fails, Kid is a wanted man, so he hides...

All Dev Patel knew was: The man was wearing a rubber monkey mask. Past that, everything else was a mystery.
The 33-year-old actor had this image stuck in his head. There’s a young man, sweaty and battered, standing in a crude wrestling ring located in what Patel excitedly describes as “the armpit of India.” There’s a crowd there, already whipped into a frenzy. They’re screaming, howling insults, throwing garbage at the fighter. He seems unfazed by all of it. Then the figure pulls out that simian mask,...

You might have heard praises of Dev Patel‘s Monkey Man everywhere. Patel’s Labor of Love is an intense, high-octane action-thriller soaked in vengeance and served on a delightful platter of emotion and culturally rich optics. After rave reviews and accolades at film festivals, the movie was finally released worldwide on April 5. And despite stiff competition from Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire, the movie has swept into second place.
Among the new movies, Moneky Paw Production’s Monkey Man outperforms 20th Century Studios’ The First Omen, with $10.5 million to $8 million+. While Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire still holds strong. The movie was expected to make around $50 million at the domestic box office but made $80 million.
The box office numbers worldwide were also mindblowing as it made a whopping $194 million instead of its expected $135 million.

Monkey Man is one of the most imaginative action films to come out sometimes and it comes from a first-time director who also stars in the lead role Dev Patel. Described as “Indian John Wick,” the action-thriller film follows the story of a young underground fighter who goes on a rampage against the city’s elite to avenge the injustices done by them to his mother and village. Monkey Man also stars Sobhita Dhulipala, Sikandar Kher, Adithi Kalkunte, Makarand Deshpande, Sharlto Copley, Brahim Achabbakhe, Ashwini Kalshekar, Pitobash Tripathy, and Vipin Sharma. So, if you loved the action and heartfelt story told in Monkey Man by the first passionate first-time director Dev Patel, here are some similar movies you should check out next.

Relatively early in Dev Patel’s shaggy revenge flick Monkey Man, Bobby (Patel) finds himself with a wad of cash in a back alley shack looking for a gun. His grimy arms dealer, unveiling his wares, immediately asks him if he likes John Wick, and offers him a Chinese replica of a gun that Keanu Keeves’s Wick used in one of the films, to which Bobby asks if he has something smaller so that he can be a little closer to his target.
That’s an almost innocuous scene in the grand scheme of Patel’s feature directorial debut, but it’s the perfect encapsulation of the film’s ethos. Where the John Wick films are globe-trotting orgies of brutal, blood-soaked revenge, Monkey Man, as written by Patel, Paul Angunawela, and John Collee, is far more intimate, literally and figuratively. Eschewing sweeping, panoramic wide shots, almost as if it were allergic to them,...

[Editor’s note: Spoilers for “Monkey Man” below.]
Move over John Wick, there’s a new martial arts action hero: Dev Patel’s titular underdog in his directorial debut, “Monkey Man.” Inspired by the ancient legend of the Hindu deity Hanuman, the invincible Monkey God, Patel creates his own mythic avenging angel in the tradition of such Korean action films as “Oldboy” and “Man From Nowhere.” Lowly yet scrappy and full of rage, Patel’s Kid is determined to take down the sinister elite of the fictional Yatana, Mumbai’s version of Gotham, and kill the corrupt cop, Rana (Sikandar Kher), who brutally murdered his mother and scarred him for life.
Patel (a martial arts competitor and teacher in London in the early 2000s with a passion for the film genre), trained rigorously with fight coordinator Brahim Chab (“The Foreigner”) and performed all the fights himself. Although he embraced Chab’s intricate choreography, he also...

The bridge between Indian and American action cinema has unfortunately yet to be built. There are throughlines between the two industries, that's for sure; recently, Siddharth Anand's “Fighter” borrowed the luscious aesthetics and jingoistic tone of the “Top Gun” franchise, and the work of Lokesh Kanagaraj wouldn't quite be the way it is without his trusty, robust list of North American favorites. But there has yet to be a film that solidly unifies the nations with an equal balance of what makes each industries' take on high-octane thrills so heady. That is perhaps until now, with Dev Patel's American-produced, Mumbai-set one-man-army action-extravaganza “Monkey Man” that pounds its chest onto screens around the world with unparalleled levels of energy, swagger and savagery.

Since we’re now into the slow slide from Easter/Spring Break into the Summer cinema season, how about an Mma-style action thriller full of fights and daring escapes? Oh, you say we just had that in the remake of Road House just a couple of weeks ago. Well that flick, despite the director’s protests to the press, bypassed the multiplex and went right to a streaming service. And this new release almost went the same route until an Oscar-winning filmmaker saw it, bought it, and helped prep it for a wide theatrical debut. Oh, and speaking of debuts, this is the first feature directed by the star of a Best Picture Oscar winner over a dozen years ago. Yes, he was the lead in that, and he’s in the lead here as the mysterious avenger who is known as the Monkey Man. And no, he’s not another comics-based hero.

Dev Patel Was a “Reluctant Director” for Debut Film ‘Monkey Man’ But Now “Would Love To Do It Again”
Dev Patel makes his feature directorial debut with Monkey Man and is hoping his first film behind the camera won’t be his last.
Patel wrote, directed, produced and stars in the Universal action-thriller, which follows a young man who sets out on a journey to hunt down a group of corrupt leaders responsible for his mother’s death, becoming a savior of the poor and powerless people they torment along the way.
At the Los Angeles premiere on Wednesday, Patel told The Hollywood Reporter that he became “a reluctant writer and then a sort of reluctant director” on the project after he pitched it to previous collaborator Neill Blomkamp to direct and Blomkamp told the actor he should helm it himself because of his attachment to the material.
“There were some incredible people that pushed me into this director’s seat, and once I was there, I didn’t look back,...

Patel exacts wildly Ott vengeance in the neon-lit city in this stylish and exciting action thriller, which doubles as a boisterous satire of Modi-esque nationalism
Dev Patel brings the gonzo chaos for this very impressive writing-directing feature debut, with Jordan Peele on board as a producer; it’s a wildly over-the-top revenge action thriller on the teeming but uncliched streets of Mumbai – doubling as a boisterous satire of Modi-esque nationalism. As the lead performer, Patel shows us some pretty serious martial arts chops, kickboxing and thumping seven shades of ordure out of the punchbag, and then the bad guys – and periodically pausing, of course, attractively dropletted with sweat, to let us get an eyeful of those sculpted abs. And he also gives us a gloriously old fashioned men’s room punch-up, with the flimsy wooden dividing walls of the lavatory cubicles going over like dominos and each washroom mirror smashed to its constituent molecules.

April 2024 Box Office Expectations: 400 Crore With 9 Releases ( Photo Credit – YouTube )
Another month has arrived, and another set of releases is scheduled for this Eid month. The biggest one, of course, is the massive Ajay Devgn Vs Akshay Kumar clash at the April 2024 box office with Maidaan and Bade Miyan Chote Miyan. However, if all goes well, then the two films might put up a strong show, bringing a massive 300 crore collection on Eid.
However, despite the 300 crore cumulative collection, the two Eid releases might not beat Salman Khan‘s best Eid performance of 320.24 crore by Bajrangi Bhaijaan in 2015. The film was helmed by Kabir Khan and is the biggest Eid release till date.
April 2024, the box office will witness 9 releases that include a clash we discussed and another clash between Dukaan and Jnu. There will also be a triple clash between Janhvi Kapoor, Vidya Balan, and Uorfi Javed. Overall, the...

Actor Dev Patel, who became a household name with his portrayal of Jamal Malik in Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire, is now looking forward to his directorial debut, Monkey Man. The actor stars alongside Sharlto Copley, Sobhita Dhulipala, Sikandar Kher, and more, in the action-thriller. He not only directed the movie but has co-written the script with Paul Angunawela and John Collee.
Monkey Man premiered at South by Southwest on March 11, 2024, and opened to a positive response from the critics and the audience. Actor/director Dev Patel opens this two-minute look behind the scenes of Monkey Man by quoting a quote from the film: “The pain will leave you once it’s finished teaching you.” Patel, who made his feature film directing debut with the action thriller, learned that lesson the hard way, breaking his foot and his hand during shooting.
“I poured all of myself into this. Every frame, every beat, every detail…and it’s been a ferocious process making this film,” explained the Oscar nominated actor.
Joining Patel in front of the camera are Sharlto Copley (District 9), Pitobash (Million Dollar Arm), Vipin Sharma (Hotel Mumbai), Sikandar Kher (Aarya), Adithi Kalkunte (Hotel Mumbai), and Sobhita Dhulipala (Made in Heaven). Ashwini Kalsekar (Ek Tha Hero), Makarand Deshpande (Rrr), Jatin Malik, and Zakir Hussain (Duranga) also star.

Dev Patel has been a well-known, majorly respected actor in Hollywood for years dating back to his star-making performance in "Slumdog Millionaire." Now, more than 15 years later, Patel is stepping behind the camera for his feature directorial debut "Monkey Man," a movie that also sees him taking an action star turn. While "Monkey Man" was originally going to go directly to Netflix, Universal Pictures and "Get Out" director Jordan Peele rescued it and will be giving it a major theatrical release. Can this film become the next big original breakout action hit?
"Monkey Man" hits theaters next weekend and is currently eyeing an opening between $16 and $25 million, per Box Office Pro. That's an encouraging start given that Netflix originally spent around $30 million on the production. It's unclear what Universal had to pay to get the rights but it feels safe to assume it's probably around $40 million or less (before marketing...

Samantha Ruth Prabhu has talked about working on ‘Citadel: Honey Bunny’, an Indian adaptation of American series ‘Citadel’. The actress said she was at her weakest while she was training and that her strength fell by 50 per cent.
“I was at my weakest while training for ‘Citadel’. Additionally, I had to maintain a calorie deficit because I was trying to give my body enough time to heal.”
“My strength fell by 50 per cent. It was a long process and it was quite difficult,” said Samantha, who took a year’s break as she was diagnosed with the auto-immune disease Myositis.
‘Citadel: Honey Bunny’ is created by Raj & Dk. It also stars Sikandar Kher, Kay Kay Menon, Saqib Saleem and Emma Canning.

Dev Patel’s directorial debut is getting closer… and here’s the trailer for Monkey Man, which is heading to cinemas shortly.
Now that Road House has released (although not in cinemas sadly), we can sate our thirst for bone-crunching action – for a little while at least. However, the next film on the horizon to offer artfully-filmed fisticuffs is Dev Patel’s Monkey Man, and judging by this new trailer, the film is taking no prisoners in its quest to be the most memorable action film of 2024.
