Andrew Bird and Squirrel Nut Zippers founder Jimbo Mathus have reunited to release a new song, “Sweet Oblivion” from their upcoming collaborative album, These 13, out March 5th via Thirty Tigers.
“Sweet Oblivion” arrives with a clip of Bird and Mathus performing the track against a gorgeous backdrop landscape in Ojai, California. The scene fits the song’s plucky folk vibe, as Mathus steadily picks his acoustic guitar while Bird handles lead vocals and alternates between strumming his fiddle and making it keen with the bow.

Chef Wolfgang Puck once famously compared cooking to music-making. “[It] is like writing a song,” he is quoted as saying. “Just as there are only so many notes, there are only so many flavors; it’s how you combine them that sets you apart.”

Bobby Pickett - "Monster Mash"
A novelty song that has been synonymous with Halloween since it first dropped in 1962, "Monster Mash" has been constantly played on the airwaves ever since Bobby Pickett was inspired to sing a song using his Boris Karloff impression. Some artists tended to be ashamed of their big hit, but not only was Bobby proud of it, he continued to perform this song live until his death in 2007 at the age of 69.

Musician Andrew Bird may not be well known to the masses (though he does have a song featured on the upcoming "Muppets" movie soundtrack and has played on both Letterman and Late Night with Conan O'Brien), but his profile has risen steadily in the indie-rock community since his early days playing with Swing revival outfit The Squirrel Nut Zippers and later with his short-lived band Bowl of Fire and in his subsequent solo recordings. Now the singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist is the subject of a new documentary entitled "Andrew Bird: Fever Year", which premiered at the New York Film Festival earlier this month. The film...

Siobhan Magnus talks to Zap2it about making the Top 12, her dream theme and what her different tattoos mean.
Siobhan says of her making the Top 12, "It's amazing. I'm kind of stunned. I don't really know how to feel. It's so much, all at once."
And what about the eliminations Thursday night (March 11), which looked incredibly emotional for everyone. "It's always surprising. At this point everyone is so talented that you don't want to see any of them go."
One tattoo is from the cover of an Edward Gorey book, one is from the band Hanson, one is from the band Hole and the last one is Eye of Horus, an Egyptian symbol of protection.
We of course had to look up the Edward Gorey book -- it's "The GashlyCrumb Tinies." (And not, as Siobhan told us off-camera, a tattoo of Mary Poppins.)
Siobhan's dream theme would be something along...

In the history of popular music, there are a handful of genres that have been maligned to the point that they're remembered as the absolute nadir of culture, even if there might have been a handful of tunes worth saving on your iPod. Disco is the prime example, and no amount of Abba-based musicals or "Saturday Night Fever" retrospectives will wash away the memories of people dancing awkwardly to Donna Summer at Studio 54. The swing revival from the late '90s will never be mentioned in any loving retrospectives despite some quality singles from Squirrel Nut Zippers, and though plenty of the bands from the era are still working and drawing crowds and sales, nobody ever really says, "You know what I miss? Nü metal!"
And then there's ska, or specifically the ska-punk revival that flooded the airwaves between 1993 and 1998. The micro-genre that blended the Third Wave sound of the...

Big-band sound loses some of its nutty nuance Without a release in nine years, the Squirrel Nut Zippers needed to come back with a bang. And in the most literal sense they do, with less than two measures of a snare beat leading to horn and saxophone blares. This, and the rest of the live album, is a no-nonsense recalling of that lost big band era. But with just bits of soulfulness (“Do What”) and tango flair (“My Drag”) scattered throughout, Lost at Sea is no discerning reminder of the band itself. Most notably, it replaces a heavy dose of...

It’s officially the halfway point of summer this week, as the Major League Baseball All-Star Game is tomorrow at Busch Stadium in St. Louis. The week will feature a number of musical guests, including a rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” care of Sheryl Crow and a performance by David Cook at tonight’s Home Run Derby.
While the actual All-Star Game is perpetually a snoozer even for hardcore fans, the Home Run Derby is always a reason to tune in to Espn. This year’s contestants are an eclectic mix of old saws and newcomers, and since it’s regularly impossible to project just who is going to win (past victors include not-quite-legends like Garret Anderson and Wally Joyner), the only real way to judge who will come out on top is to judge each contestant by his entrance music.
Yes, just like the WWE, just about every player...

I recently visited some friends abroad and in a flurry of pre-bar excitement, we shared crazy YouTube videos with each other. It was fun and we were both able to experience things we hadn't seen before. I showed them videos of Literal Interpretations of Music Videos, they showed me sick British Public Service Announcements. But they kept mentioning this thing called Lindy Hopping and when I finally asked what it meant, their faces dropped. They told me it was something that could not be described. It had to be experienced for yourself. On YouTube.
It sent me reeling back to that one year back in 1999 when Swing Dancing was suddenly super cool trend and bands like the Squirrel Nut Zippers and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy topped the pop music charts. In all honesty, I'll take "Go Daddy O" over Lil Wayne any day. I'm just hoping that this dance craze...
