President Donald Trump on Thursday pardoned Dinesh D’Souza, who was convicted of breaking campaign finance laws in 2012 by using straw donors to raise $20,000 — more than the legal limit for individuals — for his friend Wendy Long, who was running for a U.S. Senate seat. He paid a $30,000 fine, spent eight months partially confined and was nearly done with five years probation when Trump announced the pardon via tweet.

President Donald Trump has tweeted that he’ll grant a full pardon to conservative author/filmmaker and federal campaign finance law violator Dinesh D’Souza. “He was treated very unfairly by our government!” Trump tweeted by way of explanation.
Shortly after Trump’s tweet, D’Souza took his moment in the Twitter spotlight to plug his upcoming movie. His best-known film, the 2012 documentary 2016: Obama’s America, was panned by critics, with Entertainment Weekly calling it “nothing more than an insidious attempt to dishonestly smear the President [Obama] by giving intellectual cover to the worst in subterranean conspiracy theories and false, partisan attacks.”

Washington — President Donald Trump said that he would give a full pardon to Dinesh D’Souza, the political commentator, author, and filmmaker who plead guilty in 2014 to a felony campaign finance violation.
“Will be giving a Full Pardon to Dinesh D’Souza today. He was treated very unfairly by our government!” Trump tweeted on Thursday morning.

D’Souza made the movie “2016: Obama’s America” in 2012 and followed it up with “Hillary’s America: The Secret History of the Democratic Party.” In the latter movie, he portrayed himself as the victim of political retribution. Overall, his projects tend to espouse conspiratorial motives and theories from those on the left. “Hillary’s America” grossed $13 million at the domestic box office — healthy returns in the documentary category.

“Hillary’s America,” the third documentary from author, filmmaker and convicted felon Dinesh D’Souza, begins with an undeniably fascinating premise: What if a Twitter egg made a movie? While D’Souza’s previous feature-length attacks on the Democratic Party were similarly falsified and foaming at the mouth (remember the part in 2014’s “America” when he argued that Hillary Clinton wants to use Nasa to turn the United States into her own personal panopticon of terror?), “Hillary’s America” is different — this time, it’s personal.
In January of 2014, D’Souza was indicted for violating campaign finance laws after it was discovered that he made illegal contributions to Wendy Long’s Senate bid (she wound up losing by more than 40 percentage points). He was found guilty, and accused the court of selective persecution on the basis that the Obama administration was supposedly trying to silence its dissidents.

Conservative filmmaker and author Dinesh D’Souza entered a guilty plea yesterday to a charge that he made illegal contributions to Republican Senate candidate Wendy Long in 2012, officials said, according to Politico. D'Souza, director of the anti-Barack Obama documentary "2016: Obama's America," pled guilty to a single felony count that he used straw donors to make $20,000 in contributions to Long in 2012. The charge carries a maximum prison sentence of two years, but with the plea agreement, he is likely to be sentenced to 10-16 months. In addition to directing and producing films and writing books, D'Souza is also a frequent guest on talk shows, including "Real Time with Bill Maher" and "The Colbert Report."...

About a year and a half ago, conservative author and commentator Dinesh D.Souza had a moment. His documentary 2016: Obama.s America unexpectedly took the box office by storm, netting more than thirty million dollars and exposing audiences to some very, very hard right theories about our President and the supposed lingering influence of his militant father. Unfortunately for D.Souza, he.s having another moment right now, and this one doesn.t seem nearly as appealing. According to The New York Times, D.Souza was officially indicted yesterday for making illegal campaign contributions. It.s obviously all alleged behavior at this point, but basically, prosecutors think D.Souza used straw donors to funnel money to Republican Wendy Long.s campaign back in 2012. He allegedly sought out various friends, encouraged them to donate money and reimbursed them out of his own pocket, to the tune of $20,000. Campaign finance law...

The director of the controversial 2012 documentary “2016: Obama’s America” has been indicted on charges of campaign finance violations, according to court documents obtained by TheWrap. Dinesh D’Souza, who wrote and directed the conservative film, allegedly contributed a total of $20,000 to the campaign of Wendy Long, the Republican Senate candidate who ran unsuccessfully against Kirsten Gillibrand in 2012. The indictment alleges D’Souza made contributions both in his own name and hidden in others’ names totaling $10,000, and reimbursements making up the other half. Conservative filmmaker Dinesh D'Souza, whose documentary 2016: Obama's America took a critical look at President Barack Obama and was a surprise hit in 2012, will be arrested in New York on Friday for allegedly violating campaign-finance laws, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. Federal authorities accuse D'Souza of donating more than is legal to the campaign of Wendy Long, who ran in 2012 for the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Hillary Clinton but lost to now-Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand. Long, though, is not mentioned in an indictment obtained by THR on Thursday. Insiders say D'Souza has been friends with

Kirsten Gillibrand has been elected to her first full six-year term in the New York Senate. The Democratic incumbent defeated her Republican challenger, Wendy Long, to retain her seat. Gillibrand had previously been appointed to fill Hillary Clinton's Senate seat.
