Last week was an odd one for Warner Bros.’ Suicide Squad. On the same day it received three Grammy nominations for the soundtrack while Time named it one of the ten worst films of the year, and the Honest Trailer folk skewered it.
Now, Warner Home Entertainment is releasing the film on disc tomorrow, complete with Theatrical and Extended versions so if you liked it, you get 11 more minutes.
I’m biased. With writer and ComicMix columnist John Ostrander, we created the comic series the film is based on. There’s a building named after him in the movie and he’s a talking head in one of the extras where I get name checked twice (thanks, John). I can see our collective fingerprints all over the film, where David Ayer lifted tone, theme, or plot points from our first 18 months on the title. It’s something I never expected to see.

The Comic-Con trailer for David Ayer's Suicide Squad movie has now been released - and we've been dissecting it...
Well, they actually did it. David Ayer and friends are actually going to deliver us a Suicide Squad movie in August of 2016. I never thought I'd live to see the day.
Well, really, 'live to see the day' isn't a phrase you associate with a team known as the 'Suicide Squad'. This trailer landed at San Diego Comic-Con 2015 over the weekend, and wasn't really intended to be seen by the general public for a while, but Warner Bros relented and gave the fans what they wanted.
We went on a hunt for any piece of DC Comics lore that might help us make sense of the Suicide Squad movie trailer. Watch it again if you wish, and then we'll get down to business:
Here's how this is going to work.

Dream Thief: Escape #1
Written by Jai Nitz
Art by Greg Smallwood
Published by Dark Horse Comics
“I rise and shine hip deep in a Florida swamp. The cranially ventilated corpse floating beside me used to be a dirtbag named Rusty Chamberlin.”
John Lincoln has a rough life. You see, he has an issue. Whenever he sleeps he is possessed by the vengeful spirits of the murdered. When possessed, Lincoln acts as a force of cosmic justice, punishing the murderers and allowing the dead to rest peacefully.
Needless to say, this can mess with a man’s life.
The comic opens by throwing the reader right into the thick of things. John and his partner in crime (or perhaps justice would be the better term) break into the mansion of a mob boss and make him pay for his misdeeds. The rest of the comic is dedicated to the usual first issue laundry list.

Looking for something a bit different to add to your reading list? Then check out the first word on and cover art for Toshiro, an original steampunk horror graphic novel from Jai Nitz and Dark Horse Comics.
From the Press Release:
Genres collide in an adventure where steam-powered tanks clash with katanas in the new graphic novel Toshiro from writer Jai Nitz (Dream Thief) and artist Janusz Pawlak.
“Toshiro bends and blends genres to make something altogether new. Janusz and I wanted to play with Victorian steampunk, alternate history, Lovecraftian monsters, and the magic of Tezuka’s Astro Boy to tell a story,” said Jai Nitz. “We wanted to wear our influences on our sleeves but do the hard work of creating something new. I think this book will appeal to any fans of adventure.”
Synopsis:
The mechano-samurai Toshiro travels a Victorian clockwork world, battling horrors too dark for mankind.

Man, Dark Horse Comics just won’t slow down. And why should they? In addition to several exciting Star Wars projects on their plate, the premiere indie publisher keeps introducing fantastic original work with a quirky bent: Matt Kindt’s Mind Mgmt, John Arcudi’s The Creep, Paul Tobin and Juan Ferreyra’s Colder (best mini-series of the year, if you ask me), Brian Wood’s The Massive, and a new Bprd: Vampire series reuniting Fabio Moon and Gabriel Ba, just to name a few. Here are three more recently announced projects that should stir feathers in the world of surreal horror.

Famed artist Alex Ross (you know, the Super Obama guy) will soon have a new comic series published by Dynamite Entertainment. The book, titled Bring the Thunder, tells the story of a soldier stumbling upon an experimental weapon while in Afghanistan. His discovery ends up transforming him into a living sound, according to a quote from Ross in the official Dynamite Press Release. There will also be some family drama elements in it as the protagonist ends up back home with his love ones trying to adjust to his new powers.
Ross will be on story, designs and covers; Jai Nitz will handle scripts and the interior art will be drawn by William Tortosa. They also enlisted the help of an actual member of the Air Force to ensure an accurate depiction of the military world.

Disney Tron app – which we reviewed back in August – holds some surprising secrets within its code. One of which is the artwork from the forthcoming Tron: Betrayal graphic novel.
Clicking the graphic novel section of the app reveals Andie Tong’s superb pencil interiors, but if you don’t have the app we’ve got the art for you:
The storytelling picks up in the aftermath of Walt Disney Pictures’ first film in its franchise Tron. Kevin Flynn is now in charge of Encom, the world’s largest video game company. Kevin, a break-through game developer, has built the Grid, a digital world filled with living programs. This new virtual world is about to develop a life of its own and, in order to control it, Flynn’s going to need to help of an old friend…named Tron.

My readers know that I’m a big fan of the Pittsburgh Comicon. It’s a very fan-friendly show, meaning that instead of simply being ushered through cattle lines for a 3 second autograph there is time to chat with your favorite comic artists and writers. There are plenty of up-and-coming talents there eager to show their stuff and compliment your sketchbook with an inexpensive illustration. I’ve made a lot of friends at every level of that show. The only drawback to the Pittsburgh Comicon is that it’s in Pittsburgh, and I’m in St. Louis. It’s 10 hours by car. There are some sneaky speed traps in Indianapolis. And doggone it, there’s no reason my hometown can’t get a convention going. Chicago does two every year, and like the Yankees and Red Sox rivalry, anything Chicago can do St.

When Disney finalized its deal to purchase Marvel back in December, one of the inevitable questions was: which Disney comic would Marvel publish first? It turns out, the answer is "Tron."
Marvel Comics has announced a two-issue miniseries called "Tron: The Betrayal," which will tie into the upcoming "Tron Legacy" film. The miniseries will serialize the "Tron: The Betrayal" graphic novel by Jai Nitz and Andie Tong, which will be published by Disney Publishing Worldwide. Salvador Larroca ("Invincible Iron Man") is attached as the cover artist and the announcement also hints that additional stories "by some of the top names in comics today" may also be included.
"Tron: The Betrayal" reportedly takes place shortly after the end of the first film, with Kevin Flynn in charge of both Encom and the Grid. In order to maintain control of both, Flynn is reunited with his old friend, the courageous program known as Tron.

Blame Laurence…he’s the dumb-ass this time.
Pretty brave of “Wavves” to ditch the fuzzy, distorted sound for their third record in favor of a sound where you can actually hear the lyrics, huh? I think it’s a wise decision. While it’s disheartening to see a band “grow up” a bit and normalize, I wonder how much longer they could have done fuzzy noise without making them look like a one-trick pony. It’s interesting that they did this after imploding on stage in Europe last year. More importantly, I can’t wait to see how Pitchfork reviews the album. I predict one of their famous 0.0 reviews. Personally, I think it sounds pretty good.
Do you even know what I’m talking about?
So welcome to This Week in Comics, where every day is a comic book and some days are fuzzier than others.
