Exclusive: Channel 4-backed Two Rivers Media, a major player in the Scottish TV production game, has bought back its stake from initial backer Noble Grossart, the merchant bank. CEO Alan Clements has taken a majority share.
Noble supported Two Rivers with an undisclosed investment when the indie was launched in 2019 by former Stv Studios boss Clements and increased its number of shares when Two Rivers broke away from troubled Canadian outfit Kew Media in 2020. It ceased to be a person with significant control last week, according to Companies House documents.
Channel 4 remains the sole investor with a 17 stake in the company, which is part of its Indie Growth Fund.
A spokesperson for Two Rivers confirmed the news.
“Two Rivers Media confirms that Alan Clements has acquired Noble Grossart Investment’s interest in the company,” he said. “Alan expresses his thanks to Noble Grossart for the role their investment has...

Chums, a forthcoming TV series about the Oxford University days of Prime Minister Boris Johnson, is set to be illuminated by never before seen stills by acclaimed photographer Dafydd Jones.
Two Rivers recently optioned Simon Kuper’s book of the same name, telling the history of Johnson and fellow Oxford alumni turned politicians Michael Gove, David Cameron, George Osborne and Jacob Rees-Mogg.
Chums is now set to become a four-part series, with many of the stories brought to life through the photography of Jones, who studied his craft Oxford Polytechnic while several of the country’s future leaders partied nearby.
On Instagram, Jones explained how he came to photograph future prime minister Boris Johnson:
“At Oxford the privately educated formed their own cliques separating the top private schools from the minor ones. They didn’t socialise much with those from state schools. I was turned down when I asked permission...

You may feel like you’re in a time loop these days watching television. From the porn world of HBO Max’s “Minx,” to the Paramount set of “The Offer,” and the Washington power struggles of “Gaslit,” it may be 2022 but onscreen, it is the 1970s. The three series above, alongside a section of Showtime’s upcoming anthology series “The First Lady,” all take place in the era of Gerald Ford, gas shortages, and snazzy fashions. If media reflects the culture, and vice versa, what is it about the 1970s that is speaking to right now?
There are two major elements at play: a desire to indulge in nostalgia and a response to current, perceived revolutionary changes in our society. David Greenberg, professor of journalism & media and history for Rutgers University, said there’s always a desire to present nostalgia in film and television. While he wouldn’t go so...

Netflix is partnering with “Deutschland 83” creator Anna Winger on a new miniseries that tells the story of a young ultra-Orthodox Jewish woman who flees her arranged marriage and religious community to start a new life abroad.
“Unorthodox” is the first project out of the gate for Winger’s newly launched production company, Studio Airlift. The shingle, which is based in Berlin, has at least two other projects in different stages of development. Winger is also preparing for filming later this year of “Deutschland 89,” the final tranche of the Cold War spy tale that began with “Deutschland 83” and continued with last year’s “Deutschland 86.” The series is produced by Ufa Fiction and distributed by Fremantle.
“Unorthodox“ is loosely based on the semi-autobiographical novel by Deborah Feldman. The series follows a young woman brought up in an ultra-Orthodox community in Brooklyn’s Williamsburg district who strikes out for Berlin,...

Hollywood has always been drawn to a good immigrant story, one that chronicles the struggle of an outsider arriving on our shores and trying to achieve the American dream despite a host of obstacles. This narrative has long been a mainstay of the arts, one that continues to evolve as more diverse types of people provide their unique take on the immigrant experience, and seems to be increasingly expanding to other parts of the world. As Simon Kuper says in an excellent Financial Times article comparing the autobiography of Swedish soccer star Zlatan Ibrahimovic to Portnoy’s Complaint, “Just as a generation of novelists told the story of Jewish America, and music the story of black America, the arts are now creating a narrative for the European immigrant experience.” Ibrahimovic’s book describes how he grew up the son of Eastern European immigrants in an ethnic ghetto, wanting to prove...

Soccernomics is a revolutionary book written by journalist Simon Kuper and economist Stefan Szymanski, and one that all football fans of all levels should read.
The first chapter in the book takes a detailed account of the money thrown in the transfer window and how one can “avoid making silly mistakes in the market”, studying the transfer strategies of Lyon and Nottingham Forest (under Peter Taylor) to “uncover the secrets” of the transfer market that “all other clubs are missing”.
It brings up intriguing facts and I wanted to see whether the points highlighted in the book worked out in Football Manager; that is, if I followed the book’s tips as to how to make good transfers, will I succeed?
The sample club would be Fc Barcelona, primarily because it offered a club with an excellent youth set-up, ample transfer funds (so that heavy splurges could be made if...
