Movies about the financial markets inevitably have the same problem. It simply isn’t that visually compelling watching people stare at their computers or phones and muttering expletives. Adam McKay’s The Big Short managed to avoid the pitfall thanks to its truly memorable characters and such stylistic flourishes as having Margot Robbie explain complicated financial concepts directly to the camera while lounging in a bathtub.
Craig Gillespie’s Dumb Money, about the 2021 GameStop stock phenomenon fueled by individual investors driven by social media, doesn’t prove quite as successful. Nonetheless, the film receiving its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival proves entertaining enough, thanks to its canny screenplay relating the story as a Frank Capra-style battle between the little people and the rich bigwigs hoisted by their own petards, and the fun performances by a terrific ensemble.

Updated: Craig Gillespie’s Dumb Money, which is making its Toronto Film Festival world premiere this weekend, is still on course for a three-step platform release September 15 (in LA & NYC) and September 22, but will now break wide on September 29 instead of October 6.
The comedy also sidesteps Universal’s The Exorcist: The Believer.
Its the latest movie to step out of the way of the AMC-distributed concert film Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, which as of last week clocked more than $37 million from the three big theater circuits — AMC, Regal and Cinemark — in its first 24 hours of presales ahead of its October 13 release. It will play October 13-15, 19-22, 26-29 and October 31 and November 2-5 at AMC, Regal, Cinemark in Dolby and Imax.
Apple Original Films/Paramount’s Killers of the Flower Moon is going wide now on Oct. 20, as we reported previously; a change-up from the pic’s original plans below.

“Dumb Money,” Sony Pictures’ GameStop and WallStreetBets movie, is changing its release plan and will be released in an unusual four-step, platform rollout, which includes a “moderate release” in theaters one week before it goes wide.
The film was meant to open wide from Sony’s Columbia Pictures domestically on September 22 of this year following a Toronto premiere on Sept. 8, but it will now open exclusively in Los Angeles and New York on Sept. 15, then expand to a limited release the week after on Sept. 22, expand again to a “moderate release” on Sept. 29, and finally open wide on October 6.
While you may be wondering about that “moderate release,” a source tells IndieWire “Dumb Money” is expected to open that weekend on somewhere below 600 locations, and the new wide release, which should be on over 2,000 screens, lines it up for a holiday weekend on Indigenous People’s Day. Its TIFF premiere also remains unchanged.

Excuse me while I put my feet up, burn one, and bask in the glow of executives getting screwed over by their own hubris. Why am I lounging? I just watched Sony’s trailer for Dumb Money, the Craig Gillespie-directed comedy-drama retelling the GameStop stock debacle that sent several fat cats to their financial ruin. The Dumb Money red-band trailer features Paul Dano as Keith Gill, the financial analyst who invested his life savings into a failing GameStop stock that eventually made him (and others) a millionaire. Gill’s story is a wild one, filled with twists and turns. Gillespie’s new film explores the YouTube sensation’s story, with both sides incurring blowback from a dangerous numbers game.

There’s no such thing as dumb luck when it comes to good money.
“Dumb Money” is based on Ben Mezrich’s “The Antisocial Network” book, charting the 2021 GameStop short squeeze that changed Wall Street forever. Rebecca Angelo and Lauren Schuker Blum adapted the book. Craig Gillespie directs the feature adaptation, which stars Seth Rogen, Sebastian Stan, Pete Davidson, Paul Dano, Vincent D’Onofrio, Dane DeHaan, Shailene Woodley, and Anthony Ramos.
“The Batman” alum Dano stars as real-life YouTuber Keith Gill. Rogen, meanwhile, portrays the head of investment firm Melvin Capital, Gabe Plotkin, who tries to figure out the reason behind his big financial loss.
Rogen told Vanity Fair that the stock market is “purposely convoluted” since it is “designed to keep people out of it.” The fascinating true story behind “Dumb Money” essentially democratized the stock market for the average American.
“The price of entry is understanding this completely bizarre system.

The official trailer for Sony’s “Dumb Money” has dropped, shedding light on how a group of amateur investors artificially increased the stock value of GameStop, the popular video game retailer.
The short squeeze occurred in January 2021 after Reddit users on a page called “Wall Street Bets” united to catalyze a market explosion. As a result, significant hedge funds and independent short sellers incurred devastating financial loss.
Based on author Ben Mezrich’s “The Antisocial Network,” “Dumb Money” similarly centers around the Reddit users behind the phenomenon with actors Seth Rogen, Paul Dano, Sebastian Stan and Pete Davidson in lead roles.
The star-studded cast also includes Nick Offerman, Shailene Woodley, America Ferrera, Dane DeHaan, Vincent D’Onofrio, Clancy Brown, Anthony Ramos, Kate Burton, Christina Brucato, Deniz Akdeniz, Talia Ryder, Myha’la Herrold, Larry Owens and Rushi Kota.

Sony Pictures has slated “Dumb Money” for theatrical release on October 20, 2023. The film, directed by Craig Gillespie, tells the true story of a Wall Street short squeeze that momentarily turned GameStop stock into the hottest investment in town.
The squeeze had initially been triggered by users of the subreddit r/wallsteetbets, an online forum, although some hedge funds also participated. The momentary skyrocketing of the video game store’s per-share value, from $17.25 in early January of 2021 to $500 just weeks later, turned the saga into a skewed David vs. Goliath story. The narrative of amateur traders and “fans” of the company driving up its stock price as a form of fandom/social protest against the stereotypical investor class proved irresistible as a juicy media story.

Exclusive: After helping tell the crazy behind-the-scenes story of the leaked Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee sex tape in Hulu’s Pam & Tommy, director Craig Gillespie looks to have found another wild true story to adapt for the big screen. Sources tell Deadline that he has signed on to direct MGM’s feature adaptation of New York Times bestselling author Ben Mezrich’s The Antisocial Network.
The book recounts one of the biggest news stories of 2021, about a ragtag group of amateur investors, gamers and Internet trolls who brought Wall Street to its knees by reviving the challenged brick-and-mortal video game retailer GameStop, making it the first so-called meme stock.
MGM landed the rights to Mezrich’s book proposal in January 2021, only a week after the true-life story began taking shape on Wall Street, and quickly made it a priority at the studio by tapping Lauren Schuker Blum & Rebecca Angelo to adapt.

Those who have seen the movie The Social Network will be familiar with the Winklevoss twins. Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss had plans to create an exclusive social network for Harvard students, but alleged that Mark Zuckerberg stole the idea from them, which eventually led to the creation of Facebook. The twins went on to file a lawsuit against Zuckerberg for this, and eventually settled with him, netting a decent amount in the process, but of course, that would have been peanuts compared to actually having a stake in Facebook. Nevertheless, the release of the movie brought the spotlight onto the twins, and they made further waves in recent times when they became the first ‘bitcoin billionaires’. Their initial investment into Bitcoin back when the cryptocurrency was first launched has now grown to the extent of being worth over a billion dollars. This story of a comeback through the cryptocurrency, as...

It must not be an easy feat to play your own twin, but a surprising amount of actors have done it. From Lindsay Lohan in “The Parent Trap” to Paul Rudd in Netflix’s “Living With Yourself” to Mark Ruffalo in HBO’s new series “I Know This Much Is True” here are 19 stars who have played their own twins, clones, and even split-personalities on TV and in movies.
Lindsay Lohan – “The Parent Trap,” “I Know Who Killed Me” Pretty much everyone is familiar with Lohan’s iconic role in ‘The Parent Trap’ remake, but few are familiar with her much more grown-up, darker role in this 2007 psychological thriller in which her she plays two very different versions of a girl named Aubrey Fleming.
Mark Ruffalo – “I Know This Much Is True” He plays twins Dominick and Thomas Birdsey in the HBO series, the latter of whom is schizophrenic.

The Oscar-winning Facebook drama allowed each actor to break through in a big way, and it might have done the same for actor Josh Pence had moviegoers gotten to see his face. Hammer appears in “The Social Network” as Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, but, on set, Hammer only played one twin. Pence was cast as the other twin, with Fincher using visual effects to put Hammer’s face onto Pence’s body. In a new interview with HuffPo, Pence looks back at his most iconic role that most people don’t realize is him.

Exclusive: Amblin Partners won a spirited bidding battle over seven suitors to win rights to The Mechanic, a new novella by Ben Mezrich. The author, who wrote the nonfiction books Accidental Billionaires (adapted into The Social Network by Aaron Sorkin), and Bringing Down the House (the basis for 21), will write the script.
Mezrich, who has authored 22 books, here wrote a work of fiction that was published in serialized form by The Boston Globe over the course of two weeks in May.
Here are the plot pieces: An enigmatic card shark looking for an easy score. An ex-con with an inside track on a priceless haul of stolen art. A professor who uncovers a secret that could change the world. They unwittingly find themselves entangled in a mystery as old as the country itself — a mystery that someone is willing to kill for.

Exclusive: Greg Silverman’s Stampede Ventures has teamed with the Winklevoss Twins to produce a feature film adaptation of Bitcoin Billionaires, the bestselling non-fiction book by Ben Mezrich. Silverman and Jon Berg will produce with Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss.
The Twins began their journey with Mezrich on his bestseller The Accidental Billionaires, the basis for the Oscar-winning film The Social Network, which told the story of the Winklevoss Twins’ legal battles with Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook. Bitcoin Billionaires was Mezrich’s follow-up, and that tale chronicles the brothers as they do the impossible: catch lightning in a bottle a second time and mount the greatest comeback in the history of business through Bitcoin currency.
After struggling to be accepted as venture capitalists in Silicon Valley after their battle with Zuckerberg, they discovered the seductive and dangerous world of Bitcoin in Ibiza. The movie will tell the story of how the...

A million dollars isn’t cool anymore. You know what’s cool? A seal of approval from Quentin Tarantino. That’s what’s cool. It’s also what The Social Network received nearly 10 years after its release. Making a splash at the box office—if not with Oscar voters—the arguably first major film about the millennial generation was a pop culture touchstone in 2010 that’s aged like fine wine. With its haunting visuals masterminded by director David Fincher, razor sharp dialogue from Aaron Sorkin, and moody score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, The Social Network remains a potent work, and clearly a favorite for the Pulp Fiction writer-director.
“It is number one because it’s the best, that’s all!” Tarantino told Premiere (via The Guardian). “It crushes the competition.” Tarantino’s suggestion of the competition also seems to be a thinly veiled reference to how the movie...

Nearly a decade after its release, “The Social Network” could finally be getting closer to a sequel. Aaron Sorkin, whose work on the film won him the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay at the 83rd Academy Awards, recently told the Associated Press the time has come where there is enough new material about Facebook to start writing an official sequel. Not only is Sorkin eyeing a return to the world of behind-the-scenes Facebook drama, but apparently producer Scott Rudin is on board and has been for some time.
“I know a lot more about Facebook in 2005 than I do in 2018, but I know enough to know that there should be a sequel,” Sorkin told AP Entertainment. “A lot of very interesting, dramatic stuff has happened since the movie ends with settling the lawsuit from the Winklevoss Twins and Eduardo Saverin…I’ve gotten more than one email from [Rudin] with an article attached saying,...

If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then it's no surprise at all that Armie Hammer and the Winklevoss twins were total buds at the Met Gala.

From Thomas F Wilson in Back To The Future to Nicolas Cage and John Travolta in Face/Off - when actors play multiple roles...
The dramatic use of actors playing multiple characters is a bold and rather theatrical device that has its ups and downs. It goes at least as far back as Captain Hook being played by the same actor who plays the Darling children's father in stage productions of Peter Pan, a technique largely adopted in film adaptations of the story, too (hello to Jason Isaacs).
It's used a lot in cinema too. Done well, it's impressive, but when it's bad, it's Jack & Jill. Whether used in comedy or drama or outright horror, there are countless examples of actors delivering terrific performances in more than one role at once, and that's before we even get past Cloud Atlas. Still, we've had a go at totting up 25 of the best.

HBO's Silicon Valley is about to get real meta.
Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss will play themselves in the upcoming season, set to premiere on April 12, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The Winklevoss twins are best known for their lengthy legal battle with Mark Zuckerberg over Facebook; it was eventually decided that the Winklevosses would receive a reported $65 million settlement for their role in creating the social network.
That said, the Winklevosses will be well-placed on Silicon Valley – the series follows Richard Hendricks (Thomas Middleditch), who founds a startup hinged on a product called "Pied Piper."

Paul Walker's brothers, Cody and Caleb, will act as body doubles for the recently deceased actor to help complete Fast & Furious 7. Director James Wan says Walker had completed all of police detective-turned-bandit Brian O'Connor's scenes, and the brothers will be only used to fill the "small gaps" that remain, using CGI where needed to transform them into Paul. It's actually not the first time that body doubles and special effects have been used - it's not even the first time a brother has been used. Here are five movies that should make you feel confident that FF7 's adjustments will be seamless and look good.
1. Oliver Reed, Gladiator. Director Ridley Scott was in a pinch when Reed died from a heart attack before his scenes were completed. Scott used a body doubles and CGI to complete the additional two minutes of Reed's face time, but he had another...

Jesse Eisenberg takes on his most challenging role since Mark Zuckerberg in Richard Ayoade's The Double, playing a lonely everyman whose life is gradually destroyed by the arrival of a charismatic doppelgänger.
Inspired by Eisenberg's powerhouse dual performance, Digital Spy has taken a look back over 9 more actors who excelled at doubling up.
Sam Rockwell as Sam Bell and Sam Bell (Moon)
Had Duncan Jones not found exactly the right leading man in Sam Rockwell, his remarkable debut feature would likely never have worked. Astronaut Sam Bell is nearing the end of his three-year work contract on the moon, but everything he believed about his mission begins to change when he discovers an unconscious doppelgänger outside his base. It's both a top-notch sci-fi drama and a compelling exploration of loneliness, and Rockwell grounds all of the film's twists in emotional reality.

They probably don't "like" this. A Ninth Circuit court ruled Monday that Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, the twins who claim Mark Zuckerberg stole their idea for a social network that became Facebook, were not allowed to back out a settlement they received from Facebook in 2008. The twins, whose story was dramatized as part of the plot of David Fincher's Oscar-nominated film The Social Network, received a settlement estimated to be worth $65 million. As part of the deal, the Winklevoss twins received partial ownership of Facebook. But the two claim they would not have settled, and argued that Facebook didn't...

But for all the winning and success associated with Facebook, it's easy to forget that for some out there, the movie and social network represent an unforgettable loss. We recently spoke with Cameron Winklevoss, one-half of the now-famous "Winklevi" twins, who are ensnared in a seemingly endless battle with Mark Zuckerberg over the origins of Facebook.
In part one of our two-part interview, Cameron discusses his legacy post-Facebook, parties at Harvard, and his interpretation of The Social Network. Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, who were portrayed by Armie Hammer in The Social Network, are to compete in the Olympics in London next year.
The Winklevosses, who took Facebook.com founder Mark Zuckerberg to court after accusing him of stealing their idea for the social networking website, finished sixth in the coxless pairs rowing event at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, and now they have their sights set on London.

When I saw "The Social Network" for the first time, my only thought about Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, the Olympic rowers who sue Mark Zuckerberg (Jesse Eisenberg) for supposedly stealing their idea for Facebook, was "Man, where'd they find two twins who could act and row?" I had absolutely no idea that they hadn't found two twins, that, in fact, they'd found two totally different actors -- Armie Hammer and Josh Pence -- and then grafted the face of the former onto the face of the latter using digital trickery. When I learned that, I was absolutely astonished. Then I remembered "The Social Network" was a David Fincher film, and nobody is as good at invisible digital effects as David Fincher.
I just rewatched "The Social Network" again last Friday, the first time since I learned the secret of the Winklevi. Knowing that Cameron and Tyler were really Armie and...

"The Social Network" seems to have drawn more than famously private Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg into the media spotlight. After six years and a reported $65 million settlement with the Facebook founder, The Winklevoss twins, Cameron and Tyler (Aka "The Winklevi"), are making the media rounds, as well.
In an interview with The Daily, the twins say that the Oscar-nominated film did Zuckerberg a favor with its portrayal of him.
"I think the movie is pretty generous to him," says one Winklevi (we're not sure which). "You look at Jesse Eisenberg and there's definitely a sliver of conscious there and he definitely has some inner turmoil and you think he's wrestling with some of his actions and the consequences and whatnot."
But as for the Zuckerberg the twins know and hate?
"The real life Zuckerberg," the Winklevoss twin adds. "I don't think he's showed an ounce of empathy."

Six years. That's how long the Winklevoss twins, Cameron and Tyler (collectively known as The Winklevi in certain circles) have been embroiled in a legal battle with Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg (known as a gazillionaire in certain circles).

The Daily, Rupert Murdoch’s new digital concern, produced a three-part video interview with Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss, the amphibious Übermenschen who’ve been suing Facebook C.E.O. Mark Zuckerberg on and off for the better part of a decade. To promote the series of interviews, the Daily also released an interview trailer, a short montage that presumably includes many of the most scintillating segments of the full conversation. Most of their grievances are stale: we’ve heard it all before, and we’ve heard it in the Golden Globe–winning words of Aaron Sorkin. To demonstrate the predictability of the Winklevi’s schtick, we’ve transcribed every sentence that appears in the trailer for “The World according to Winklevi” with a few stock phrases missing. See if you can fill in the blanks.
