It all started with shows such as “Blaze & the Monster Machines” and “Doc McStuffins.” Over the past decade, many preschool children’s animated shows have shifted toward showing a more diverse cast and including storytelling that features Stem themes — problem-solving that’s focused on subjects including basic understanding of math, engineering and the sciences.
“I do think that there are far more Stem animated shows, especially for preschoolers,” says Amy Friedman, head of kids and family programming for Warner Bros. “If you’re doing preschool programming, you’ve got to have an educational foundation because you’re always teaching. The question is what are you teaching? Everything teaches something. You just may do it intentionally or unintentionally.”
In May, Cartoon Network began airing “Sesame Street Mecha Builders,” which focuses on a reimagined cast of Elmo, Cookie Monster and Abby Cadabby, who play robot heroes-in- training.
Together, they use their Stem superpowers to solve problems.

At first bite, Cookie Monster seems like a harmless creature whose only flaw is acting on the needs of his stomach over the recommendations of his brain. In reality, this is a battle-hardened veteran who is set to play a bigger role in one of the media industry’s most intense brawls.
The furry, azure creature, known for his time on “Sesame Street” and even in a commercial for Apple, will soon boost WarnerMedia’s efforts to win new fans of its kids programming, and to keep those who already have a connection from breaking it. WarnerMedia and Sesame Workshop, currently in the middle of a pact that lasts through 2025, are expanding the work the educational-programming company will do for the media giant. Since it launched on PBS in 1969, “Sesame Street” has brought generations of kids much joy with its colorful, relatable Muppets. But some stand out more than others.
13. Abby Cadabby
Who? Exactly.
12. Telly
Nobody likes a worrywart, and Telly is the worry-est wart there is.
11. Zoe
Elmo proved to be such a popular character that the show introduced Zoe in 1993 to be his companion. But did we really need another Elmo?
10. Rosita
Rosita is most memorable for being the first regular bilingual character on “Sesame Street,” but not much else.
9. Mr. Snuffleupagus
Everyone had an imaginary friend growing up, but only Big Bird’s proved to be real.
7. Bert and Ernie (tie)
There’s no separating this duo, not even on this list.
6. Grover
Grover doesn’t speak in contractions, which should be annoying, but the character somehow manages to make it endearing.
5. The Count

“Sesame Street” and CNN aired a town hall Saturday morning to help kids and families understand the nationwide protests on racial injustice.
Hosted by CNN’s Van Jones and Erica Hill, “Coming Together: Standing Up to Racism” employed Elmo, Big Bird, Abby Cadabby and other “Sesame Street” favorites to help explain racism in the U.S. and answer important questions from children across the country.
“Not all streets are like Sesame Street,” Elmo’s dad, Louie, said when explaining the protests to Elmo. “On Sesame Street, we all love and respect one another. But across the country, people of color, especially in the Black community, are being treated unfairly because of how they look, their culture, race and who they are. What we are seeing is people saying ‘Enough is enough.’ They want to end racism.”
