ABC’s ratings-challenged Happy Endings created a cult following thanks to its relatable stories about a group of friends in their late 20s and early 30s. While the comedy helped to launch the careers of stars Eliza Coupe (Jane), Elisha Cuthbert (Alex), Zachary Knighton (Dave), Adam Pally (Max), Damon Wayans Jr. (Brad) and Casey Wilson (Penny), behind the scenes, the Sony-produced series created by David Caspe was effectively its own showrunner training program. As Rutherford Falls creator Sierra Teller Ornelas revealed in a recent Twitter thread, Happy Endings had 23 writers over its three seasons, with an incredible 21 — including assistants — becoming showrunners.
During this week’s TV’s Top 5 podcast, hosts Lesley Goldberg and Daniel Fienberg reunite 14 of the Happy Endings writers to build off Ornelas’ thread and discuss, in light of the ongoing Writers Guild strike, the benefits of having a traditional writers rooms, why having writers on set...

From "Cocaine Bear" to caveman times, it seems like Elizabeth Banks is the go-to talent for the most headline-grabbing concepts out there. After telling the saga of that poor bear ending up on the wrong end of a drug smuggling operation gone horribly awry, the actor/director is turning her attention to a much more kid-friendly subject: the beloved cartoon, "The Flintstones." According to Deadline, Fox is moving ahead with a spin-off series of the original animated show — because that's what audiences have been craving, apparently! Banks has been attached to the project as an executive producer and will also lend her voice talents to the role of a grown-up Pebbles, Fred and Wilma's daughter.
Fox has commissioned a pilot for the new series "Bedrock," which the report describes as "continuing the story of the Stone Age family, Bedrock catches up with the Flintstone family two decades later, with Fred...

Fox has opted not to proceed with a second season of its freshman multi-cam family comedy Outmatched.
The move, which was fully expected, leaves Prodigal Son as the only Fox series formally on the bubble. That drama, starring Michael Sheen, is getting renewed, contingent on finalizing deals and locking in Sheen’s schedule.
Outmatched, the only new live-action comedy introduced by Fox this season, never quite registered creatively or ratings-wise, but Fox brass love the two leads, Jason Biggs and Maggie Lawson, and may try to get them for other network shows, I hear.
2019-20 TV Cancellations And Renewals For Broadcast, Cable & Streaming
From writer/executive producer Lon Zimmet (La to Vegas), Outmatched harkened back to one of Fox’s signature comedy series, Malcolm In the Middle. It centered on a blue-collar couple in Atlantic City trying to raise four kids – three of whom just happen to be certified geniuses.

Fox has canceled the multi-cam comedy “Outmatched” after one season.
The news comes on the same day the network announced that it had renewed both “Last Man Standing” and “The Resident.” With the cancellation, the only Fox show awaiting word on its fate for next year is the freshman drama “Prodigal Son,” which sources say is likely to return.
“Outmatched” joins fellow canceled freshman Fox series “Deputy” and “Almost Family.” The network previously renewed freshman animated comedies “Bless The Harts” and “Duncanville” and the freshman drama “9-1-1: Lonestar.”

Fox has canceled the multi-camera comedy “Outmatched” after one season, TheWrap has learned.
“Outmatched” was one of a handful of shows absent from Fox’s schedule for the 2020-21 season when the network announced it last week. “Last Man Standing” and the medical drama “The Resident” have since been picked up for new seasons, leaving the freshman drama “Prodigal Son” as the only scripted series still awaiting a decision from the network.
The cancellation leaves Tim Allen’s “Last Man Standing” and midseason entry “Call Me Kat” as the network’s only two live-action comedies currently on the slate for next season.

The latest variation on network sitcoms’ beloved “a family, but with [x complication],” Fox’s “Outmatched” flips the usual parent-child dynamic on its head by following an Atlantic City family, including three bonafide genius kids who are too smart for their bewildered parents to understand. Each time one of their children tests off the charts, Mike (Jason Biggs) and Cay (Maggie Lawson) groan in preemptive exhaustion, imagining all the highbrow projects and questions their progeny will have for them that they, in turn, have no idea how to handle. They, as every other joke reminds us with the bluntness of a neon billboard, are just too dumb to keep up.
From prolific sitcom producer Lon Zimmet, “Outmatched” does have some sharp moments, especially when it sits in the uniquely weird disconnect between parents and kids who share few interests, or underlines the difference in how the capital g “Gifted” children interact with...

Exclusive: ABC’s multi-camera/hybrid comedy pilot Nana, headlined and co-executive produced by Katey Sagal, is making a major casting change. Ben Lawson (Designated Survivor) has been tapped as the male lead opposite Sagal. He replaces Josh Cooke, who had been originally cast in the role.
The decision was made after the pilot’s table read late last week, which triggered a substantial reworking of the script. While Sagal as the title character was very well received, a number of other elements underwent changes, including the male lead character Alex getting reconceived. That led to the recasting.
Recastings are not uncommon in the pressure cooker of broadcast pilot season when some 70-80 pilots are being made at the same time on tight deadlines. Bill Bellamy (Def Comedy Jam) is set as a series regular in Nana, a multi-cam/hybrid ABC pilot starring and co-executive produced by Sons of Anarchy alum Katey Sagal. The project also hails from writer Lon Zimmet, Ted Melfi and Kimberly Quinn’s Goldenlight Films, Alcon Entertainment, 20th Century Fox TV and ABC Studios.
Written by Zimmet and directed by Andy Ackerman, Nana centers on Alex, an obsessive dad who, after the death of his wife, is forced to invite his brash and bawdy mother-in-law – Nana (Sagal) – into his home to help raise the two granddaughters she barely knows.
Bellamy will play Burke, Alex’s enthusiastic co-worker. This firefighter isn’t the brightest bulb, but he’s a great pal and sounding board for Alex. He was so eager to rescue a cat in a tree and get a taste of some “real action” that he accidentally crashed into another engine at the scene.

Jason Biggs (Orange is the New Black) has been tapped as the male lead opposite Maggie Lawson in Geniuses (working title), Fox’s multi-camera blue-collar family comedy pilot from La to Vegas creator/executive producer Lon Zimmet.
Written and executive produced by Zimmet, Geniuses harkens back to one of Fox’s signature comedy series, Malcolm in the Middle. The comedy is about Cay (Lawson) and Mike (Biggs), a blue-collar couple in South Jersey trying to get by while raising four kids, three of whom just happen to be certified geniuses.
Biggs plays Mike, the dad. He is affable, enthusiastic and not dumb but definitely not cerebral.
Biggs next will be seen reprising his role as Larry Bloom on the final season of Netflix’s Orange Is the New Black and in the indie The Subject, directed by Lanie Zipoy. In TV, the American Pie alum previously headlined the CBS comedy series Mad Love.

Josh Cooke (Grace and Frankie) is set as the male lead lead opposite Katey Sagal in Nana, a multi-cam/hybrid starring and co-executive produced by Sons of Anarchy alum Sagal. Josh Cooke has been cast in a lead role in the ABC hybrid comedy pilot “Nana” opposite Katey Sagal, Variety has learned.
Cooke will play Alex, a fire chief in Indianapolis who is a newly widowed single father of two girls. It’s clear that he is in over his head with the girls, but he is reluctant to hire help and can’t imagine letting a stranger look after his children. Overly protective and a bit controlling, the last thing he wants is to welcome his late wife’s chaotic, disruptive and inappropriate mother, Nana (Katey Sagal), into the home. After seeing Nana interacting with the girls, he’s forced to reconsider his stance; she might be exactly what the family needs in the face of their recent loss.
Cooke’s recent television roles include stints on shows like “Castle Rock” (pictured), “Grace and Frankie,” “Bull,” “The Marvelous Mrs.

Former Psych star Maggie Lawson is set as the female lead in Geniuses (working title), Fox’s multi-camera blue-collar family comedy pilot from La to Vegas creator/executive producer Lon Zimmet.
Written and executive produced by Zimmet, Geniuses harkens back to one of Fox’s signature comedy series, Malcolm in the Middle. The comedy is about a blue-collar couple in South Jersey — half of it played by Lawson — trying to get by while raising four kids, three of whom just happen to be certified geniuses.

Lawson, who starred as Juliet O’Hara on Psych, has been recurring on Fox’s Lethal Weapon.

Is “Ghosted” coming back?
That’s a question on viewers’ minds as upfronts week comes to a close, with Fox, ABC, NBC, CBS and The CW all having announced their fall programming schedules as of Thursday. ‘Cause some of those slates have holes in them, meaning the statuses of almost half a dozen shows on broadcast television are still up in the air.
Look, we can accept the fact that not every series will be saved like “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” — not every show should be. But come on, networks — minus ABC and The CW, who have already killed or renewed everything they’re going to — fans need to hear one way or another whether their favorite programs will be returning this fall, especially for ones that have a crazy-devoted fanbase.

“La To Vegas” has been canceled at Fox after one season.
The single-camera comedy set aboard the fictional Jackpot Airlines weekend Los Angeles to Las Vegas flights will not be seeing a return trip for the 2018-19 television season. The first season, which launched in early 2018, drew an average of 2.3 million viewers and a 0.73 rating in the 18-49 demo.

Looks like “La to Vegas” won’t be taking off on Fox’s fall 2018-19 slate after all. The network has officially canceled the Dylan McDermott-led series after just one season.
An individual with knowledge of the decision tells TheWrap that, while the network was “proud of the show,” with the addition of “Thursday Night Football,” as well as new comedies on Fridays and Sundays, and the large amount of returning shows next season, Fox’s schedule couldn’t accommodate a second season of the Will Ferrell and Adam McKay-produced comedy.
Along with McDermott, the cast of “La to Vegas” includes Kim Matula, Ed Weeks, Nathan Lee Graham, Olivia Macklin and Peter Stormare.

Fox’s single-camera airplane comedy series La To Vegas has been permanently grounded as the network has opted not to renew it for a second season.
As Deadline exclusively reported last week, Fox had been looking to get La to Vegas executive producer Will Ferrell to appear in the Season 2 premiere in order to create buzz around the comedy’s return. I hear Ferrell was open to possibly guest starring in an episode next season but would not commit to doing the Season 2 opener. While not the crucial factor, that, along with the network’s reduced shelf space because of the addition of Thursday Night Football, contributed to Fox’s decision to cancel the comedy starring Dylan McDermott.

While nothing is official, we hear the La to Vegas TV show is inching closer to a second season on Fox. The network hasn't made an announcement, but a source indicates some initial steps in season two pre-production have already been taken, in advance of kicking off production over the summer. Earlier this week, we reported creator Lon Zimmet and Steve Levitan were already working on a way to "make some noise" and land a season two renewal. Perhaps they have done just that. Fox is heading into its upfront presentation today with two freshman comedy series, midseason addition La to Vegas and fall entry Ghosted still in limbo.
“We haven’t made a decision,” Fox chairman Dana Walden said during Fox’s upfront press call today. “We still have episodes to air of a in July,” she said.
Ghosted was taken off the schedule in April. Remaining are the back 6 episodes of the supernatural comedy made under new showrunner Paul Lieberstein who was brought in after Season 10.
As for La to Vegas starring Dylan McDermott, we “wanted to make decision if we have place to allow the show to grow,” Walden said.
She noted that series creator/exec producer Lon Zimmet is working with executive producer Steve Levitan on ideas and they will revisit Season 2 when everyone gets back to Los Angeles from New York (NY to La).

After years of being mistaken for each other, Dylan McDermott and Dermot Mulroney are finally having a laugh. McDermott plays the macho pilot Captain Dave in Fox’s “La To Vegas,” while Mulroney shows up in at least two episodes this season as a high-flying rival.
“It’s been 30 years of people confusing us,” McDermott says on the latest edition of IndieWire’s Turn It On podcast. “Obviously it culminated on the SNL sketch [2012’s “Dylan McDermott or Dermot Mulroney?” faux game show].” In the bit, Jamie Foxx’s character is a game show contestant who comes up with another name for the two of them: Derbel McDillet — which became McDermott’s Instagram handle for a time.
McDermott noted that he and Mulroney even shared the same agent early in their careers, the legendary Sue Mengers, who told them they had to change their names. “I was going to be Mick Dermott,” he said. “That was my genius plan.
