Exclusive: Academy Award winner Anthony Hopkins (Freud’s Last Session) has signed on to star in Bruno Penguin and the Staten Island Princess, the latest film from director Nick Cassavetes. Billed as the first-ever major Hollywood production to shoot in Antarctica, the film also has Shia Labeouf (Padre Pio) in talks to star and will enter production in November.
Scripted by Daniel Barnz and Ned Zeman, Bruno Penguin is based on a Vanity Fair article from the latter which tells the true story of adventurous Swiss photographer Bruno Zehnder, a superb artist who spent the last 20 years of his life in Antarctica photographing Emperor penguins. He was obsessed by them – their kindness, the way they lived, their deep levels of affection for one another. Bruno spent his life trying to learn how to communicate with them and over time, the colonies grew to know him and return his fondness.

One week ago was the second anniversary of the end of Killing Eve after four seasons. But as great as the show was, with no small amount of fascinating murderous dynamics between the leads, many of us were incredibly disappointed by the finale.
After all, not only did the writers utilize the generally despised 'bury your gays' trope by ruining one of the most vibrant, albeit insane queer couples on TV, but they also killed off one of the best characters ever created, the psychopathic but lovable assassin Villanelle.
Villanelle is a great character in her own right, thanks to the writing prowess of Luke Jennings, but she wouldn't be as well known and loved if it weren't for the performance of the great Jodie Comer on the show. The actress has come a long way from British soap operas to one of the best projects in television history, from...

Alex Garland’s Civil War is not an easy movie to quantify or grapple with, including for the folks who were there when it was made. An intentionally provocative film that is as much speculative fiction as it is a dystopian thriller about the United States descending into chaos, it is an immensely disquieting experience, and one which is being hotly debated even before its wide release on Friday.
While most of the press that saw the film during its SXSW premiere were impressed by the experience—including admittedly us—there has been a vocal counterpoint in some reviews and social media posts which criticize Garland’s intentional lack of context while immersing viewers into a dark possible future. The critique, generally speaking, is that the film “has nothing to say” about the American political climate of today or that it “doesn’t engage the current moment.” Ever an economist with his words,...

"I've never been scared like that before... and I've never felt more alive." If two other trailers and a making of featurette weren't enough, A24 has desperately released a third trailer two days before this movie opens. A bit much, no? Do we need to see more? A24 has launched one more trailer for Alex Garland's Civil War, his action thriller war movie arriving in theaters soon. This is the fourth film Garland has directed, following Ex Machina, Annihilation, and Men. A tense journey across a dystopian future America, following a team of military-embedded journalists as they race against time to reach DC before rebel factions descend upon the White House. The excellent ensemble cast for features Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, Cailee Spaeny, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Karl Glusman, Sonoya Mizuno, Jonica T. Gibbs, Jess Matney, plus Jesse Plemons. This trailer is packed with critic quotes following its SXSW debut last month.

Nick Offerman plays the Potus in the dystopian action film Civil War, but although some liken his character to Donald Trump, the actor didn’t think about him during filming.
“Honestly, no,” Offerman told Deadline during the film’s premiere. “When you see the movie, it’s so unattached to anything in modern politics, not only in our country but any country. It’s like doing a play where I’m playing a baseball player, and people say, ‘Did you ever think of your favorite team, the Cubs?’ And I say, ‘No, it’s a brilliant piece of fiction.'”
He continued, “From the get-go, it clearly wasn’t based on anything in reality, and so, that’s a distraction, and my job is to immediately say, ‘Who is this guy? And how can I best serve Alex [Garland’s] vision.'”

"They're risking their lives to show the world what happened." A24 has revealed a new behind-the-scenes featurette for Alex Garland's Civil War movie, his next new action thriller arriving in theaters in April. It's about a fictional (or not?) civil war in America following a crew of photojournalists on a "road trip" around America. After the two previous trailers for this movie, this preview finally reveals that it's actually about the journalists and really focused on them, not the details of the civil war and/or why it's happening. Still not so sure about this concept right now. "It felt immersive and it felt incredibly real, and it was chilling." The excellent ensemble cast for Garland's Civil War includes Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, Cailee Spaeny, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Karl Glusman, Sonoya Mizuno, Jonica T. On the way from 20th Century is a heist thriller titled Eenie Meanie, and Deadline reports that Samara Weaving (Ready or Not, Scream 6) and Karl Glusman (Watcher) will star.
Shawn Simmons (“Wayne”) is directing the film, and Simmons also wrote the script.
Deadline notes that Eenie Meanie is likely to debut on Hulu.
“The film follows a former teenage getaway driver who is dragged back into her unsavory past when a former employer offers her a chance to save the life of her chronically unreliable ex-boyfriend.”
Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are producing.
A favorite in the horror world, Samara Weaving has a handful of projects headed our way soon, also including horror movie Azrael and the 1980s-set action-thriller Bella.

Samara Weaving is buckling up for 20th Century Studios forthcoming heist thriller Eenie Meanie. Sitting shotgun for the project is Karl Glusman, with writer-director Shawn Simmons at the helm. Producing the fast-paced thriller is Deadpool franchise alums Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.
In Eenie Meanie, Samara Weaving plays Edie, “a former teenage getaway driver who is dragged back into her unsavory past when a former employer offers her a chance to save the life of her chronically unreliable ex-boyfriend.” (via Deadline)
Glusman hits the pavement as John, Edie’s recurrent boyfriend. Despite their differences, Edie feels compelled to pull John out of the flames of a terrible situation.
As one of my favorite actors in the business today, Samara Weaving is a force of nature. For some of her best performances, check out Joe Lynch’s Mayhem. The 2017 action-comedy is like Office Space meets The Raid and is a must-watch.

Austin Butler is going from blades to bikes as he goes from Dune: Part Two to the upcoming period drama, The Bikeriders. Butler revealed that his immediate start on The Bikeriders meant that he couldn’t shave his hair for Dune 2 as time was not allotted to have his hair grow back, so he’s actually wearing a prosthetic bald cap. He got to keep his blonde locks and Focus Features has now released the new trailer for The Bikeriders, which Butler stars in with Tom Hardy.
If you recall, The Bikeriders was originally set for a fall 2023 release via Disney’s Searchlight. The studio ended up selling the film (in an unusual move) to Focus, who decided to set it up as summer counter programming. This might have been a smart move as Butler is sure to come off Dune: Part Two an even bigger star than he was a few months ago.

"You don't know what side they're fighting for..." This looks scary. A24 has unveiled the second trailer for Alex Garland's Civil War, his next new action thriller movie arriving in theaters this April. This trailer confirms - we really don't need this movie right now. This is the fourth film Garland has directed, following Ex Machina, Annihilation, and Men. The actual plot is still being kept a secret but it's obvious what is going on here - mainly that it's about a civil war in a near-future America. The excellent ensemble cast for Garland's Civil War film features Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, Cailee Spaeny, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Karl Glusman, Sonoya Mizuno, Jonica T. Gibbs, Jess Matney, plus Jesse Plemons. I really think this is a misguided, harmful movie that is glorifying the action that will happen in a civil war rather than being a movie trying to stop America from going this direction.

Maybe you’re vexed by the official description for Little Death, the debut feature from music-video director Jack Begert. Maybe you want to know more than, “A middle-aged filmmaker on the verge of a breakthrough. Two kids in search of a lost backpack. A small dog a long way from home.” Maybe you’re itching to search for a more detailed plot description.
Take my word for it: don’t.
The worst thing about Little Death, which Begert co-wrote with Dani Goffstein, is that the best things about it are all spoilers. Please excuse some vagueness in the interest of your best possible moviegoing experience.
David Schwimmer, fully leaning into the self-pitying act he honed as Ross Geller, plays Martin, the middle-aged filmmaker. Martin’s life is, as he tells his therapist, “meaningless.” A long-suffering TV writer, Martin’s finally got an autobiographical script in the works, but wokeism threatens his masterpiece.

There’s a perplexing choice at the heart of “Little Death,” directed by Jack Begert, best known for his work in music videos. That choice is essentially to make two very different movies and smash them together. If you squint closely, you can see the thematic throughlines between them, both stories about addiction told through different prisms, but while one is grating, the other is deftly told. You just have to make it through the first to get to the one that is more elegantly executed.
Begert is primarily a music video director with credits like Olivia Rodrigo’s recent “get him back!” and Jack Harlow’s Fergie-sampling “First Class” under his belt. The hyperactive visual style of that genre is on full display in the first half of “Little Death,” which is narrated by a depressed, misogynistic television writer named Martin played by David Schwimmer and, eventually, Gaby Hoffmann,...

Praise the bladder gods! Alex Garland’s Civil War will be shorter than previously rumored. As it turns out, IMDb posted an incorrect runtime for the upcoming (and all too timely) film. The Bikeriders moved off its Dec. 1 release last month in the wake of AMC pouncing on the date with its second concert film,...

What better lieu to deliver a possible critical text on regional and political differences that have shaped America for ages than the hotly tipped (and super secretive) fourth feature film by Alex Garland. Even if there might be some sci-fi elements it’s anyone’s guess whether this is tied to 1860s America or not. The British filmmaker with a dedicated fanbase presented us with Ex Machina (2015) and Annihilation (2018). His third feature Men (which premiered on the Croisette in 2022) is considered a companion piece to this new work which goes by the title of Civil War. Production begin in Atlanta in March with the likes of Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Cailee Spaeny, Karl Glusman and Sonoya Mizuno.…...

Actors Channing Tatum and Zoe Kravitz are engaged.
Kravitz showed off her engagement ring at a Halloween party last weekend, where she dressed as Mia Farrow’s character from Rosemary’s Baby, and Tatum wore a baby costume.
The two began dating in 2021 while working together on Kravitz’s upcoming directorial debut, Pussy Island.
The actress recently told GQ about all of the ways Tatum would help her out on set.
“Whether it was making me tea or pouring me a drink or going to whip someone into shape or whatever — he really was my protector and it was really wonderful and sweet,” she said. “He’s just a wonderful human. He makes me laugh and we both really love art and talking about art and the exploration of why we do what we do. We just love to watch a film and break it down and talk about it and challenge each other.

Leading lady Zoë Kravitz has had our attention for years now. Whether she's captivating audiences on the big screen - like as Catwoman in 2022's "The Batman," opposite Robert Pattinson's titular character - or piquing interest with her personal life, fans have always been a bit curious about what's going on in Kravitz's world. Her relationship with Channing Tatum has fans tuned in, and this naturally led some to wonder about the rest of Kravitz's love life.
When her movie with Pattinson came out, many quickly hopped on the Kravitz-Pattinson fan ship. Alas, the actors didn't have romantic chemistry off set, although it wouldn't have been Kravitz's first time getting cozy with a costar.
Earlier in her career, Kravitz was rumored to be romantically linked to her "Beware the Gonzo" costar Ezra Miller, per the New York Daily News. However, it was never confirmed by Kravitz or Miller whether...

Zoë Kravitz and Channing Tatum are engaged. Amid a sea of celebrity breakups in recent months, multiple sources confirmed the couple's happy news with People on Oct. 30. The news comes just two days after the pair were spotted leaving a Halloween party, during which Kravitz seemingly showed off her engagement ring.
On the night in question, Kravitz and Tatum dressed up as Rosemary Woodhouse and her baby, respectively, from the 1968 horror movie "Rosemary's Baby." While photos of the couple's Halloween costume went viral, many fans were too distracted by Tatum's baby bonnet and the knife prop in Kravitz's hand to notice the massive diamond engagement ring. Upon closer inspection of her right ring finger, however, she seems to be making no attempt to cover up the ring - a subtle but sweet engagement announcement.

Tracing the evolution of a fictional motorbike gang known as the Vandals, writer-director Jeff Nichols’s The Bikeriders takes its inspiration from a photobook of the same name by influential mid-20th-century photographer Danny Lyon. A major contributor to the “new realism” photography movement, Lyon lived alongside his leather-clad petrolhead subjects for months at a time, helping him create urgent, spontaneous images of their outlaw lifestyle that oozed authenticity. Unfortunately, those latter qualities are in short supply in the film, but the sheer exuberance of the story and the stylistic brio of Nichols’s direction often compensate.
The Bikeriders is narrated by Kathy (Jodie Comer), the girlfriend of fiercely committed young Vandals member Benny (Austin Butler). She relays the idiosyncrasies and transgressions of the gang from a slight remove as it evolves from a blue-collar fraternity and surrogate family to a nihilistic crime syndicate. As endearing as Kathy’s disapproving bemusement can be,...

Since it debuted on Netflix in early October, the Benicio Del Toro-starring "Reptile" has consistently been one of the top 10 most-watched titles on the streaming platform. The film is the feature debut of director Grant Singer, who cut his teeth directing music videos for artists like The Weeknd, Sky Ferreira, Lorde, Taylor Swift, Sam Smith, Ariana Grande, Ariel Pink, and Skrillex. "I think the movie will be exciting to people who like to watch something where you don't know where it's leading you, where a film is going to have twists and turns and deceive you," Singer said in the film's press release. "And people who like things that are intense and visceral and suspenseful, I think they'll find something exciting in this." Here's the film's official synopsis:

London film festival Jodie Comer, Austin Butler and Tom Hardy are magnetic in this power struggle-cum-love triangle inspired by Danny Lyon’s 1968 photographic study of Chicago bikers
Jeff Nichols’s motorcycle movie is about a love triangle and a succession crisis – inspired by the immersive 1968 study of Chicago bikers by photojournalist Danny Lyon, whose black-and-white pictures flash up with the closing credits. This film opens up the storytelling throttle with a throaty growl, delivering the doomy romance of an old-fashioned western and the thrills of a mob drama.

In the murky realms of Grant Singer’s Reptile, audiences delve into a tale woven with intrigue, and mystery. Penned by Singer, Benjamin Brewer and Benicio Del Toro, the film attempts to entangle the viewer in a web of murder and corruption, manifesting through the gritty lens of a small-town investigation. Del Toro is flanked by supporting actors including Alicia Silverstone, Michael Pitt, Ato Essandoh, Justin Timberlake, Matilda Anna Ingrid Lutz, Eric Bogosian and Domenick Lombardozzi,. However, the atmospheric tension conjured by the film echoes of potential left unexplored, marking it as a journey through familiar terrain desperately grasping for an identity of its own.

I saw “Reptile,” the new Netflix homicide thriller, at home on a link and decided to watch it with subtitles, since this is the sort of moody cop noir about life in the shadows where there’s a lot of murmuring going on. And I didn’t want to miss a clue. This means, of course, that the subtitles will keep cueing you with descriptives like “sinister music” or “quiet ominous music,” and I couldn’t help but notice that this happened around 50 times. So much quietly sinister ominous music! That’s fair game for the genre, though it’s laid on a bit thick in “Reptile,” and that’s an emblem of the film’s aesthetic, which might be described as understated overstatement.

This minute-long clip from Netflix’s Reptile is short on dialogue but incredibly intense. The scene focuses on Benicio Del Toro chasing a shooter who’s attempting to take out the cops pursuing him.
In addition to Benicio Del Toro, the neo-noir crime thriller stars Justin Timberlake, Alicia Silverstone, Frances Fisher, and Ato Essandoh. Eric Bogosian, Domenick Lombardozzi, Michael Carmen Pitt, Karl Glusman, and Matilda Lutz also star.
Del Toro was also busy behind the scenes, co-writing the screenplay with director Grant Singer and Benjamin Brewer. Molly Smith, Trent Luckinbill, and Thad Luckinbill produced, and Del Toro, Rick Yorn, and Rachel Smith executive produced.

Editor’s note: This review was originally published at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival. Netflix releases the film on its streaming platform theaters on Friday, October 6.
“Reptile” opens on the plaintive notes of Juice Newton’s “Angel of the Morning” wafting through a sequence in which realtor couple Will (Justin Timberlake) and Summer (Matilda Lutz) prep a lavish property for a showing. It then splits to Will presenting to a conference as Summer hangs out in a gym’s locker room. Newton’s tune stutters and stops. These mundane moments with an oddball soundtrack are meant to create early suspense: Summer will eventually be murdered in a vacant property. And Will is the prime suspect.
And yet, “Reptile,” the directorial feature from Grant Singer — a music video director known for his collaborations with The Weeknd and Taylor Swift — isn’t really about Summer or Will. It concerns Detective Tom Nichols.

It’s fitting that Grant Singer opens Reptile, his meandering feature directorial debut, with an “Angel of the Morning” needle drop. Chip Taylor composed that aching tune about a one-night stand because he wanted to capture a passionate and ephemeral feeling. “It was beyond words,” he has said of the 1967 song. “And that is the power.”
Singer, like Taylor, reaches for the ineffable. The director, who’s helmed music videos for pop music royalty up until this point, is obsessed with controlling atmosphere and setting the mood. He crowds Reptile with gripping sequences, suspenseful moments, dramatic pauses and surprising levity — elements that, despite their overuse, keep the audience on edge and strategically blur the lines between dreams and reality. A malevolent score by Berlin-based composer Yair Elazar Glotman, with an assist from Venezuelan musician Arca, helps calibrate this tension and adds to the movie’s overall mysterious air.

Some films merely offer you a clockwork plot. Others, like Jeff Nichols’ smokin’ cool “The Bikeriders,” whisk you away with a roar of mood and atmosphere.
That’s no surprise coming from the versatile director of “Mud,” “Loving” and “Midnight Special,” all seemingly different (but equally wondrous) films with one common denominator: a precise, wistful sense of place and tone. As soon as we spot Austin Butler on a bar stool sporting a badass Vandals Chicago jacket on his back, that exacting disposition is evident here, too. With appealingly greased and molded hair, Butler looks like he just stepped away from the “Elvis” set for a swift cigarette break, wearing the invincible aura of a movie star like it’s his second skin. Using photographer Danny Lyon’s iconic The Bikeriders’ imagery as a jumping-off point, Jeff Nichols’ latest feature imagines a fictionalized Chicago motorcycle club, the Vandals. Motorcycle club culture might be a distinctly American phenomenon, but Nichols casts two Brits in the lead, with varying returns: Jodie Comer as Kathy narrates the story in a clear Goodfellas conceit, adopting a Midwest accent flashy (and divisive) enough to ensure sustained awards-season chatter; Tom Hardy is Johnny, a truck driver who gets the idea to start a motorcycle club while watching Marlon Brando’s The Wild One. This low-stakes “why not?” starting point for founding the club works early in the film, until, following the Goodfellas trajectory, it all comes crashing down. Without Thelma Schoonmaker’s editing prowess, The Bikeriders’ rise-and-fall narrative ultimately plays too conventional.

Jeff Nichols’ filmography is still young, and still showing no signs of settling in to a stylistic signature — or rut. Through such distinctive features as Take Shelter, Loving, Midnight Special and Mud, the writer-helmer has, though, established a certain directorial integrity. Valuing mood and gesture over plot or formula, his stories are propelled by an openhearted but unsentimental tenderness toward his characters, and invigorated by electrifying grace notes.
With his latest offering, the gloves, at first, seem to be off. The Bikeriders is set within a testosterone-fueled counterculture where brute stupidity frequently prevails, and many viewers will find its violence and code-of-honor brotherhood distancing, or at least familiar movie territory. But what resonates beyond the brawls and blood is a profound affection for the people onscreen — those grace notes provided by a fine cast, with Jodie Comer and Tom Hardy stirring undercurrents that are particularly affecting precisely because they’re never explicitly examined or explained.

The Telliride Film Festival began August 31 with a lineup for the Rockies event’s 50th edition that includes world premieres of Alexander Payne’s The Holdovers (Focus Features), Emerald Fennell’s Saltburn (Amazon) and Free Solo filmmakers Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin’s narrative feature Nyad (Netflix).
Deadline is on the ground to watch all the key films. Below is a compilation of our reviews from the fest, which also include Rustin, All of Us Strangers, The Bikeriders and more.

All of Us Strangers
Director: Andrew Haigh
Distributor: Searchlight Pictures
Cast: Andrew Scott, Paul Mescal, Jamie Bell, Claire Foy
Deadline’s takeaway: The film asks a lot of questions, but the answers are not supplied easily. It is a challenging work as much of Andrew Haigh’s character-driven filmography often is, but one that offers rich rewards if you sign on to it at all.
