1. William Parker: For Those Who Are, Still (Aum Fidelity/Centering)
I have been an admirer and observer of William Parker for a quarter century, but nothing prepared me for the impact of this three-disc set's final CD, which features an orchestral composition, Ceremonies for Those Who Are Still, which ranks high among the best orchestral music of the 21st century, and I'm including classical composers. In other words, don't cringe while imagining the usual jazz-with-strings hack job. There are moments in Ceremonies for Those Who Are Still -- particularly when the choir is singing Parker's poems of life and loss and creation -- when the grandeur of the year's most fashionable jazz album, Kamasi Washington's The Epic (also a three-cd set) comes to mind, but the difference -- the reason Parker's set ranks much higher -- is that his orchestrations are vastly more contrapuntal, colorful, individual, and just plain daring.

Matthew Weiner of Mad Men fame is coming you way with his feature film writing/directing debut, Are You Here. The bizarre-sounding story is brought to you with a cast you might expect isn’t difficult for someone with Mad Men under his belt to get into his film.
Ben (Zach Galifianakis) inherits a sizable fortune when his father dies, despite the fact that Ben lives off-the-grid and had been estranged from his father. Steve Dalls (Owen Wilson), a womanizer and local television personality, is a friend of Ben’s, and decides to join up with Ben to fight the legal battle brought by Ben’s sister (Amy Poehler), but there’s a lot more going on than that. Check the trailer below for more of an idea of the ins and outs of friendship that are explored in this one.
The comedy certainly has the talent, including an impressive supporting cast,...

The new film Are You Here follows Steve Dallas (Owen Wilson), a womanizing weatherman, and his slightly off best friend, Ben Baker (Zach Galifianakis), as they return to Ben’s childhood home after his estranged father passes away. Upon learning that Ben has inherited a majority of the family fortune, the two friends must deal not only with the strain these events are having on their friendship, but with Ben’s controlling and bitter sister (Amy Poehler), Ben’s father’s beautiful young widow (Laura Ramsey), and each of their own shortcomings as they try to straighten out and take control of their lives

Confession time. I really wanted to love this movie. I mean, I really, really, really did. Sadly, not everything we want in life comes true. On the other hand, I’m an optimist and try to remain open to compromise. So, while I did not hate the film by any means, I came away only kind of liking Are You Here.
Matthew Weiner makes his feature film debut as a writer and director with Are You Here. For those of you in the know, that alone is quite an exciting idea. For those of you who watch too much reality TV and not enough of the good stuff, Matthew Weiner is known for writing substantially on the AMC series Mad Men and the HBO series The Sopranos. Now that I have your attention, I’m afraid things about about to get real, as in real disappointing.
Are You Here had a lot of promise.

One Has to Ask: Weiner’s Debut a Floundering Misfire
Success sometimes has a blindsiding effect on self-criticism and control, which may very well be the excuse for the feature directorial debut of “Mad Men” and “The Sopranos” scribe Matthew Weiner, Are You Here, which is a nauseous, floundering excuse for a film. If you’re confused about whether you’re meant to laugh at or feel pity for these unengaging stereotyped people, it’s probably because the cast seems unsure of this as well. Painfully, obnoxiously miscast, there isn’t one single moment that works in the entire film, which is nearly two hours. Originally titled You Are Here when it premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in 2013, it’s as if the refashioning of statement to question is posed for anyone left in the audience that stayed until the end credits.

While Tina Fey, Jason Bateman, Dax Shepard and crew are dealing with their own family dysfunction and trying not to stare at Jane Fonda’s chest in Shawn Levy’s This is Where I Leave You, the three comedians who didn’t get to join in the festivities have joined forces for a familial drama of their own. Owen Wilson, Zach Galifianakis and Amy Poehler are taking bitter sibling politics to a whole new place, guided by the man who kind of knows how to do messed up families better than most — Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner. The first trailer for Are You Here (formerly titled You Are Here) is supposedly for a comedy, but doesn’t offer up as many laughs so much as it thrusts its comedians in a terrible, bleak reality. We meet Ben Baker (Galifianakis) as he desperately attempts to break past security and bust into a local news studio; it’s where...

The first trailer has been released for Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner's feature film debut Are You Here. The comedy stars Owen Wilson and Zach Galifianakis, and the movie looks fantastic. It seems to have a solid mix of comedy and drama. I was happy with what I saw in the trailer, and this is a film that I definitely want to watch. According to EW, it took Weiner about eight years to get the script to Wilson, two breaks from Mad Men to shoot it, and two more seasons to edit and finish it.

“I just continued the process of making the movie. I treated it as a screening,” "Mad Men" creator Matthew Weiner told EW about the less than enthusiastic response to "Are You Here" (retitled from "You Are Here") at Tiff last year. He adds that the finished movie is “actually quite a bit different than it was at Toronto.” But will it work better? We'll find out, with the first trailer for the film landing today. It hasn’t been a great time for respected TV creators turning their hand to films. Sopranos man David Chase found little success with his first effort, Not Fade Away and now his former mafia-writing lieutenant-turned-Mad Men wrangler Matthew Weiner saw his film directing debut, Are You Here, greeted with cold reactions at the Toronto Film Festival, when it bowed as You Are Here last year. It's September, and the fall movie season is upon us! That means we're going to set aside all of those summer frivolities and explosions, turning an eye towards more serious fare instead.
Speaking of serious, the hunt for Oscar starts this week at the Toronto International Film Festival, and the buzz generated by this year's official selections will tell us plenty about where the race is headed. Let's break down the most anticipated films our northern neighbors have to offer.
1. '12 Years a Slave'
Noteworthy Cast: Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender, Paul Giamatti, Benedict Cumberbatch, Brad Pitt, Quvenzhane Wallis, and directed by the extremely buzzy Steve McQueen ("Shame").
Tiff Synopsis: The incredible true story of Solomon Northup, a free black man from upstate New York who was kidnapped and sold into slavery in 1841.
Going for Oscars?: You have to love its chances for a Best Picture nomination, and Chiwetel Ejiofor...
