CBS has firmed up its unscripted and specials oversight as Jack Sussman, the Eye net’s exec VP of specials, music, live events and alternative programming, departs next month. Mitch Graham, who has been running unscripted under Sussman, will continue to do so, while Mackenzie Mitchell will head up specials as VP of that division.
Graham will now report directly to CBS Entertainment president Amy Reisenbach, while Mitchell will report to both Reisenbach and Bruce Gillmer, the president of music, music talent, programming and events at Paramount and the chief content officer, music, at Paramount +.
Reisenbach revealed the new structure in a memo set to go out to staffers on Wednesday afternoon. As part of the change, the specials/alternative group will collectively report to Graham and Mitchell depending on the project.

Jack Sussman is exiting CBS after more than 25 years. The exec, who first joined CBS in 1998 as head of CBS Specials, has served as executive vice president of specials, music and live events at CBS Entertainment since March 2006, adding responsibility for all alternative programming in 2020. He won’t be straying too far from the Eye network, however: Moving forward, Sussman will segue into a role as an EP for The Tony Awards and The Kennedy Center Honors starting in 2024.
Sussman will depart following the upcoming Grammy Awards.
“I’m ready,” Sussman said in a memo to staffers. “For two important reasons. First, I’m returning to my roots. I get to close out my career how I started in this business – producing. Working with talented artists and other creative producers has always been the best part of the job and now I will get to do that full time… I...

The Tony Awards broadcast this Sunday will feature performances from the casts of Tony Award nominated best musicals and revivals including Camelot, Into The Woods, & Juliet, Kimberly Akimbo, New York, New York, Parade, Shucked, Some Like It Hot and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.
And Funny Girl.
Though that 2022 musical revival starring Lea Michele is a year past any Tony eligibility, producers apparently couldn’t resist the possibility of the popular Michele performing on the broadcast. Easy bet: “Don’t Rain On My Parade.”
In addition, the show will feature performances from Joaquina Kalukango, the Paradise Square winner of the 2022 Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical. The cast of A Beautiful Noise, the Neil Diamond musical that did not score any nominations, also will perform.
Also scheduled is a special performance for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre recipients Joel Grey and John Kander.

Even in the years when the Grammys have seemed predictable, they rarely are — anyone remember Soy Bomb?
And in an era when all bets already seemed to be unprecedentedly off, in the past days we’ve seen Kanye West disinvited from performing — although sources say talks are still ongoing with him, as well as Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift and others — Foo Fighters cancel their scheduled performance due to drummer Taylor Hawkins’ tragic and untimely death on March 25; and of course Will Smith’s smack heard ‘round the world has changed how organizers approach major awards shows forever. Thus, we’re going into Grammy Weekend with a roll-with-it spirit that seems to extend to the organizers of the show as well.
“It’s live television. Anything can happen and usually does,” Jack Sussman, CBS’ executive vice president of specials, music and live events, told Variety earlier this week. “We’ll be ready.

Plans for the 2022 Grammys are still coming together, but the night honoring music will include a tribute to Taylor Hawkins, the Foo Fighters drummer who passed away on March 25. It’s unclear so far what exactly that will look like. “We will honor his memory in some way. We want to figure out what is the right thing to do that is respectful to everyone involved,” Jack Sussman, CBS’ executive vice president of specials, music and live events told Variety. “We’re patient. We’ll be planning right up until the very end.” Foo Fighters had been added to the list of performers this year on March 24, but the band canceled upcoming tour dates on March 29, sharing a post on their Instagram. “We’re sorry for and share in the disappointment that we won’t be seeing one another as planned,” reads the statement. “Instead, let’s take this time to grieve,...

Just because the Grammys is a far different show than the Oscars doesn’t mean the producers and suits behind it think they’re immune to the kind of incident that happened Sunday with Will Smith. So says Jack Sussman, CBS’ head of specials who’s preparing for the 64th Annual Grammys this Sunday in Las Vegas.
“I think you go into every live show with the understanding that anything could happen, and it usually does,” says Sussman, who quips that he still has Ptsd from working the infamous Super Bowl Xxxviii halftime show with Janet Jackson. “If you surround yourself with really talented people behind the scenes, you’re in a position to handle it, knowing that it might not be a perfect outcome, but it’s gonna be an okay outcome, at least as far as making television is concerned.”

John Legend, Carrie Underwood, J Balvin with Maria Becerra and just-announced Silk Sonic are among the performers added to Sunday’s Grammy Awards, where producers will also highlight three musical genres — gospel/Christian, tropical Latin and bluegrass — that are not traditionally part of the show. The ceremony will also feature a tribute to Taylor Hawkins, the Foo Fighters drummer who died March 25 at the age of 50.
The list of artists set to appear on the live CBS telecast from MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas also include Maverick City Music, Aymée Nuviola and Billy Strings, who are lined up for “special segments that showcase Las Vegas and spotlight genres not historically represented on the Grammy Awards telecast,” per the Grammys.
Maverick City Music is nominated in gospel and Christian music categories. Nuviola is up for tropical Latin album while Strings is a contender for American roots and bluegrass album honors.

With the 64th Annual Grammy Awards’ move to Sunday, April 3 (due to growing concerns about the Omicron variant) came the announcement that the 2022 CMT Music Awards would be in for a change as well, and now that has a new date and venue. CBS and CMT have set a new April airdate and venue for the 2022 CMT Music Awards. CBS’ inaugural broadcast of country music’s entirely fan-voted awards show will now take place live Monday, April 11 from 8-11 p.m. live Et/delayed Pt from Nashville’s Municipal Auditorium and various locations in and around the city. It’s been a bit of musical chairs for dates for the CMT Music Awards and Grammys on CBS. The CMT Music Awards, originally set for April 3, were displaced by the Grammy Awards, which shifted to April 3 after Covid forced a postponement of that ceremony’s original date in January.
It will be the first time the CMT Music Awards will air on CBS after ViacomCBS announced it was moving the annual country music awards show from cabler CMT to its broadcast sister.

After almost a two-year hiatus, the Tony Awards came back, but the siren song of Broadway’s biggest and best wasn’t enough to draw a large TV audience.
The 9-11 p.m. portion of the Tony Awards that aired on CBS tanked, drawing only 2.62 million viewers per Nielsen’s time-adjusted and corrected Live+Same Day fast overnights and scoring just an 0.4 rating in the key 18-49 demographic. For comparison, the 2019 awards ceremony hosted by “Late Late Show’s” James Corden scored a 0.8 rating in the key demo and fell below 6 million total viewers with just under 5.5 million tuning in — and that was an all-time, five-year low.
The Tony Awards are typically held in early June at the end of the Broadway season. The presentation of honors for the 2019-2020 Broadway season were delayed more than a year because of pandemic concerns and the historic shuttering of Broadway.

As the Tony Awards return Sunday for the first time in more than two years, CBS and White Cherry Entertainment’s Ricky Kirshner and Glenn Weiss faced a challenging task: How to hand out awards, celebrate the best in recent theater and — perhaps most crucially — hammer home the fact that Broadway is back and open for business.
One result: Taking advantage of multiple platforms in the ViacomCBS universe by expanding the show to four hours (from its normal three hours on CBS) — but splitting time between Paramount Plus and CBS. Dubbed “The Tony Awards Present: Broadway’s Back,” the show has been divided into two: A live presentation of most of the 74th Annual Tony Awards for the first two hours, followed by a live concert event for the second two hours.
All four hours will be streamed on Paramount Plus, with the final two hours also live on CBS.

Tonight, we come together — virtually — for the Grammy Awards, “Music’s Biggest Night,” and do our best to celebrate the music of the worst year of so many people’s lives. It’s finally spring, and as much as the season will bring back horrifying memories of what happened at this time a year ago, there’s also the pride and cautious elation that we’ve gotten through it, so far.
With a similar sense of cautious elation, we can feel pride that the music industry has largely survived the tragic past year, so far. Based on what Variety has learned from Grammys executive producer Ben Winston, CBS EVP Jack Sussman and Recording Academy chief Harvey Mason jr., tonight’s show will be celebratory but respectful, Covid-conscious but unifying, traditional but something new, a celebration of human achievement and endurance that will also be primetime, network-tv entertainment. “Throughout these challenging times, our industry and our union members have proven their creativity and resilience in discovering new methods of storytelling while adapting to new safety protocols and procedures,” SAG-AFTRA said Wednesday in a statement. “We embrace that spirit as we re-imagine the SAG Awards with a one-hour special that highlights and expands on our signature ‘I am an Actor’ opening and honors the outstanding performances of the past year.”
The Grammys were recently pushed back to March 14. The SAG Awards had previously claimed that date.

The announcement Tuesday that the Grammy Awards will be moved from January 31 to March 14 took many people by surprise but did not come as a shock: The show is scheduled to take place in Los Angeles, which has seen a dramatic spike in Covid-19 patients and is currently ranked by Fema as the most dangerous county in the U.S.
“The deteriorating Covid situation in Los Angeles, with hospital services being overwhelmed, ICUs having reached capacity, and new guidance from state and local governments have all led us to conclude that postponing our show was the right thing to do,” said a statement signed by interim Grammy chief Harvey Mason jr., CBS Executive VP Jack Sussman and the show’s executive producer, Ben Winston.
However, the show, which is hosted by “Daily Show” host Trevor Noah, is quite far along in its planning, and is being moved up by just five weeks.

SAG-AFTRA, the combination of the Screen Actors Guild union and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, is “extremely disappointed” that the rescheduled Grammys are now in conflict with its own SAG Awards.
The 2021 SAG Awards date was announced back in July 2020. SAG-AFTRA now says it is “in contact” with the Recording Academy, the group that puts on the Grammys.
“We are extremely disappointed to hear of the conflicting date, March 14, announced today for this year’s Grammy Awards telecast,” SAG-AFTRA said in a statement. “We announced the same date for the SAG Awards last July with the intent to give the greatest possible scheduling consideration for other awards shows. We expect the same consideration from sister organizations throughout the industry.”
“The SAG Awards recognizes outstanding acting performances over the past year,” the group continued. “We will again put on a spectacular show that accomplishes that mission.
