Contracted
Stars: Najarra Townsend, Charley Koontz, Matt Mercer, Alice Macdonald, Katie Stegeman, Caroline Williams | Written and Directed by Eric England
Contracted, originally screened at Frightfest back in 2013, stars Najarra Townsend as Samantha, a young woman who contracts something nasty after being date-raped at a party. Over the course of a few short days, she begins bleeding from pretty much every orifice and quite literally falling to bits. Her already fragile relationships with her friends, colleagues and mother (Caroline Williams) also start to break down as she refuses to seek help and becomes increasingly isolated.
The body horror elements within the film were really well done – that is to say, very icky. Cronenberg fans will be well satisfied with the deterioration of the flesh on display here. The film’s portrayal of an insular and personal crisis is well done. Samantha is on a self-destructive path in addition to the horrifying illness she finds herself with.

For his latest feature, indie filmmaker Eric England takes a look at the horrific consequences of unprotected sex, how society values women and the demise of humanity’s concern for the well-being of others. A thoughtful and wonderfully cringe-inducing body horror story, Contracted is an often frightening and nasty exploration of isolation and desperation that grabs hold from the start and doesn’t let up until the film’s bitter conclusion.
Contracted follows a young waitress named Samantha (Najarra Townsend), who hits up a friend’s party only to be drugged and raped, awakening the next morning with little memory of the man who assaulted her. At first she believes she’s suffering from a really bad hangover, but soon enough Sam’s body begins to undergo some rather grotesque transformations unlike any sort of Std you were ever taught about in health class. As Samantha attempts to hide her ailments from everyone around her,...

Do you need a tampon?
When you think you've done a tinkle and you find the toilet looks like the inside of an abattoir, it might not just be a heavy flow. In Contracted (2013), Sam (Najarra Townsend), a budding botanist, is date raped by a shadowy creeper and wakes up with a nasty hangover and some messy sheets. She tries to deny it, but as her symptoms get worse (and worse), no answers present themselves. Somehow, she lets her ordinary problems take precedence, especially her deteriorating relationship with Nikki (Katie Stegeman). Her mother (Caroline Williams) and friends, like Alice (Alice Macdonald), try to steer her towards help, but she might have got something that nobody can help her with.

Ever since it's release via IFC Midnight on March 18, 2014, filmmaker Eric England's indie 'body horror' flick Contracted has been burning up DVD and VOD, and we've got first word on the successful feature's inevitable sequel.
Starring Najarra Townsend, Caroline Williams (Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2), Alice Macdonald, Katie Stegeman, Matt Mercer, Charley Koontz, Simon Barrett, Ruben Pla, Dave Holmes and Celia Finkelstein, Contracted revolves around a 20's something Los Angeleno (Townsend), who finds herself infected with a rather potent sexual disease after being date-raped at a party.
"IFC has asked us for a sequel," filmmaker England, whose previously wrote and directed the genre feature Madison County, told us this morning of a potential follow-up to Contracted.
"I told the producers I wasn't interested, because I never envisioned a sequel in the first place, but if I came up with an idea that I felt lived up to or surpassed the first...

In college, I remember taking a class in which the professor showed a public service announcement that warned young adults about date-rape. The overall message—like in any stranger-danger warning—was that the effects of the incident don’t end with the morning-after guilt and that there is a fair chance that it could have been prevented all together.
It could be easily said that Contracted (2013) is like an hour and a half-long PSA, but it digs so much deeper than that. It reveals the daily self-consciousness and indignity endured by many women and the great lengths to which they are willing to go in order to achieve love and acceptance.

Chicago – We’ve all seen the girl at the party. You know the one who catches your eye as she walks by. She’s beautiful but alone, looks a little lost, and, sadly, almost always winds up with some other guy. Eric England introduces us to such a girl at the beginning of his film “Contracted” and then spends the rest of the movie’s runtime punishing the hell out of her as a mysterious and fast moving Std eats away at all the things that had us looking in the first place.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
The genius of England is he’s able to keep us looking as that pretty face disintegrates because the real problem is something else. Sam is subject to a perfect storm of rape culture, personal insecurities and friends and family determined to bring her into line with their own agendas. Where it all ends up is not entirely unpredictable.

Tagline: "Not Your Average One Night Stand." Director/writer: Eric England. Cast: Najarra Townsend, Caroline Williams, Alice Macdonald, Katie Stegeman and Matt Mercer. Sometimes horror films are morality plays. They warn you away from certain behaviours. Sometimes horror films play on a viewer's fears. Eric England's (Madison County) Contracted is a little bit of both of these concepts. Contracted involves one character's struggle to deal with a sexual infection. Samantha's (Najarra Townsend) devolvement into something monstrous puts the film squarely into body horror, while the consequences of unprotected sex reach a nightmarish conclusion. Contracted is a dramatic indie horror film, which will unsettle much of the film's target audience. The film begins with a scene of necrophilia, but quickly transitions to Sam and her struggles. Sam is a normal girl, dealing with some relationship issues. She is newly bisexual and quickly seduced into casual sex, with the help of intoxicants.

Eric England’s “Contracted” has the potential to turn into a truly disturbing slice of bodily horror a la some of David Cronenberg’s best work. The tale of a lesbian woman who literally starts falling apart after a sexual encounter at a party could have been a commentary on sexuality, a riff on our national obsession with looking perfect, a cautionary tale about drinking, or even just a twisted slice of grotesque horror.
It ends up all and none of the above thanks to a dull script and style-less direction from England. The filmmaker is lucky that the fearless Najarra Townsend keeps the piece from crumbling entirely.
Rating: 2.0/5.0
Townsend stars as Samantha, a girl who seems like she might be on the edge of a mental collapse before the physical one that overtakes her in the film. She’s leaving messages for her girlfriend Nikki (Katie Stegeman) that are...

Remember all those times where you didn’t use a condom during sex and spent the next few days anxiously waiting to find out if you’d be welcoming an unexpected child into your life? I know, that’s enough of a horror movie right there, thinking about the responsibility of taking care of another life, but Contracted is worse – oh, so much worse. I firmly believe that Eric England’s body-horror flick should be shown in high schools around the world when the importance of using protecting is discussed in Sex Ed classes, because having an Std is one thing, but the thought of contracting whatever the hell this Std is will probably cause any sexually active viewers to carry a whole box of condoms on their person at all times.

Tagline: "Don't touch anyone." Director Eric England (Madison County) has recently completed the horror thriller Contracted. Starring Najarra Townsend (The Dawning), Contracted plays on fears of sexually transmitted infections, based on the film's plot and promotional material. Now, the film has a second movie poster, which can be seen here. Details on the film's story are sparse. But, the film centrally focuses on the character Samantha. Samantha comes down with a mysterious illness after a brief sexual encounter. Has Samantha contracted an Sti, or something much worse? The second poster for the film (above) shows Samantha and a bio-hazard sign. The graphic alludes to a more deadly infection than a simple Sti and a trailer for Contracted is sure to be released soon. Madison County director Eric England’s poster for his new film Contracted features a haunting image of star Najarra Townsend who plays a woman with a mysterious illness. According to plot details, she’s a “young girl that has a one night stand with a random stranger and contracts what she thinks is an Std... but is actually something much worse."
Simon Barrett who also wrote segments for V/H/S, The ABCs of Death and V/H/S/2 stars alongside Caroline Williams, Katie Stegeman, Charley Koontz, E-Kan Soong, Matt Mercer, Alice Macdonald, Jennifer Gonzalez, Ruben Pla, and Lionel D. Carson.
England said his movie may make you think twice about going home with that cute urban lumberjack from your neighborhood bar and told Bloody Disgusting it “will do for hooking up with random strangers what Jaws did for going to the beach." I can’t wait to see who plays Brody.

This past weekend indie filmmaker Eric England (Madison County) celebrated the world premiere of his latest directorial endeavor, the Hitchcockian thriller Roadside, at the first-ever CineMayhem Film Fest in Thousand Oaks.

*full disclosure: a DVD screener of this film was provided by Image Entertainment. Director/writer: Eric England. Cast: Ace Marrero, Katie Stegeman, Natalie Scheetz, Nick Principe, Matt Mercer, Colley Bailey and Joanna Sotomura. Madison County is a slasher film soon to be released by Image Entertainment (May 8th). The film follows a group of friends into a small town where a possible thesis, involving a serial killer, awaits James (Colley Bailey) and his four friends. That serial killer is still active and James must fight off a 6' plus killer, played by Nick Principe. The story from Eric England is only partially fleshed out, but sometimes having unanswered questions creates a better experience for viewers. Overall, Madison County was a fun time spent with believable characters and their last moments. This is definitely a horror film and the sub-genre would be one of the slasher. Horror elements include certain tropes.

The forever lovely final girl of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (the real one, not that lame The Beginning bullshit) is thankfully still stretching her legs in the horror business, and word has come that she's just landed a role in Madison County director Eric England's new flick, Contracted!
Bloody Disgusting reports that Caroline Williams has joined the previously announced cast, which includes Katie Stegeman, Charley Koontz, Najarra Townsend, E-Kan Soong, Matt Mercer, Simon Barrett, Alice Macdonald, Jennifer Gonzalez, Ruben Pla, and Lionel D. Carson.
"Contracted is really a product of all the promiscuity that goes on in the world and the lack of understanding for which the consequences carry," England told us in an earlier interview. "There are shows that glamorize promiscuous sex like 'Teen Moms' and 'Jersey Shore', and I just wanted to take that and kind of spin it on its head. Contracted is definitely not...

You’ve heard the story a thousand times before: A group of hapless college kids embark on a road trip into a backwoods area, also known as The Land That Cell Phone Reception Forgot, and go snooping around about the town’s sordid past.
Lo and behold, the past doesn’t want to stay buried. We’ve all seen these films, and when I read the premise for Madison County, I decided to keep an open mind because, surely, it couldn’t be that straightforward with its journey into such well-traveled territory, could it? It had to offer something new and fresh, some twist that hadn’t already been run into the ground by the dozens of films preceding it.
Unfortunately, this wasn’t the case.

ComingSoon.net published a poster for the indie horror film “Madison County.” Artist Tom “The Dude” Hodge created the poster. Here is a synopsis of the film: Madison County is about a group of college students that travel to a remote, mountain town called Madison County to interview the author of a tell-all book on the accounts of the grisly murders that happened in the town over two decades ago. Upon their arrival, the author is no where to be found and the townspeople state that they’ve “not seen him in years.” They also deny that Damien Ewell, the notorious murderer, ever existed and that the murders never happened. As the kids start to dig around to get their own answers, they come to find that the stories, and Damien, maybe more real than the townspeople are letting on. The film stars Ace Marrero, Colley Bailey, Adrienne Harrell, Matt Mercer,...

Here's some great poster art for the indie horror film Madison County. The film premiered at Screamfest, and the poster you see above was created by Tom "The Dude" Hodge who also created the movie poster for Hobo With a Shotgun. Ya gotta love pig-headed killers.
The film itself is about a group of college kids who travel to a small mountain town called Madison County to interview the author of a tell-all book about several grisly murders that happened there. But when the kids get to Madison County, the author is nowhere to be found and the locals act like they haven't seen him in years. They also say that the killer never existed and the murders never happened. However, when the kids start digging around to get their own answers, they find out that the stories may be more real than the townspeople are letting on.

As Halloween draws to a close for one more year, we here at Dread Central have two more seasonal short films to share with you: Eric England's The Trick or Treater and Erin Stegeman's Meet the Tweeds, both of which are co-produced by Ace Marrero along with each respective director.
Ace co-stars in The Trick or Treater with Katie Stegeman (he also appears in England's Madison County, which just premiered at the recently concluded Screamfest La film festival). Bradley Scott Sullivan edited and did the short's titles and sound work.
The Trick or Treater features Marrero as a man who gets tricked when he doesn't deliver his treats.
Ace explained to us that the original plan was to produce three shorts for Halloween to help celebrate one of his favorite times of the year, but Screamfest demanded so much attention they could only make the two.
