A new face is about to pop up in Manhattan, Kansas: Olafur Darri Ólafsson is joining the Season 3 cast of Somebody Somewhere on HBO.
Ólafsson will recur as Iceland, the new renter of Sam’s (Bridget Everett) family farm. Production on the seven-episode season recently wrapped in Chicagoland.
From Mighty Mint, Duplass Brothers Productions, and executive producers Everett, Hannah Bos & Paul Thureen, the series follows Sam, a true Kansan on the surface, but, beneath it all, struggling to fit the hometown mold. Grappling with loss and acceptance, singing is Sam’s saving grace and leads her on a journey to discover herself and a community of outsiders who don’t fit in but don’t give up, showing that finding your people, and finding your voice, is possible. Anywhere. Somewhere. In season three, we see growth against all odds.

This week on TheWrap-Up podcast, TheWrap founder and editor-in-chief Sharon Waxman spoke with Bridget Everett, star of the HBO comedy series “Somebody Somewhere.”
The discussion begins in Manhattan, Kansas, not only the birthplace of Everett but the setting for the HBO series in which she plays Sam, a woman trying to find happiness in the wake of her sister’s death.
“My childhood was a lot different, a lot of the people I grew up with who I’m still friends with were all church, family, faith, football on weekends,” Everett said of how the show’s portrayal of Manhattan life compares to her upbringing. “It was largely sort of a straight, heteronormative vibe back in the ‘70s and ‘80s.”
That said, when she met with creators Hannah Bos and Paul Thureen about working on something together at HBO, they pitched a number of elements that resonated deeply with Everett.

HBO is heading back to the Little Apple.
The premium cable outlet has renewed Somebody Somewhere for a third season. The pickup comes a few days after the dramedy starring Bridget Everett and set in Manhattan, Kansas, concluded its seven-episode second season.
“We’re thrilled to announce the third season of the honest and impactful Somebody Somewhere,” said Amy Gravitt, executive vp comedy programming at HBO and Max. “Nothing makes us smile quite like this show, which never fails to remind us that life is made up of the small moments, that family can be chosen, and that dreams don’t have deadlines.”
The series draws relatively modest viewership in relation to some other HBO originals, but it’s been a critical favorite. Season one received an AFI Award as one of the top 10 TV programs of 2022.

Bridget Everett still has restaurant stress dreams. Never mind that she is a writer, star, executive producer, and the driving force behind Somebody Somewhere, the critically acclaimed, cult-favorite HBO show about a directionless woman who moves back to her hometown in middle age (Season Two premieres April 23). When Everett sleeps, it’s the screaming customers and missing orders from her days as a server that haunt her.
“It’s really weird, because of all the things that you could have a stress dream about, producing a television show — it’s so fucking stressful,...

Season one of HBO’s Somebody Somewhere largely focused on lead character Sam’s (Bridget Everett) halting attempts to fit back into her Kansas hometown. The trailer for season two of the series suggests she’s feeling at least a little more comfortable there.
The trailer shows that Sam and Joel (Jeff Hiller) have moved in together — “It’s solely a financial arrangement,” Joel says — and settled into a routine. Sam also takes a few more steps to further her singing, approaching her old music teacher for voice lessons.
Hiller also told The Hollywood Reporter that Joel will have a new love interest in season two, played by Tim Bagley (Grace and Frankie). “I originally thought that Joel might get back together with his season one boyfriend, but I think this story is much more interesting,” he said.
The two-minute clip also showcases the series’ mix of comedy and emotion...

Of all the joys on television over the past year, one of the purest has been HBO’s dramedy Somebody Somewhere, created by Hannah Bos and Paul Thureen — and of all the gems in the series, one of its brightest is Jeff Hiller’s Joel. Bridget Everett’s Sam might be the protagonist, and every character down the line contributes in ways big and small to its magic. But it is Hiller’s performance, disarmingly warm and deeply hilarious, that most fully embodies the show’s heart.
It’s difficult at first to pin down exactly who Joel is, because Somebody Somewhere specializes in characters too complex to be reduced to familiar archetypes. What is clear from the start is that this gangly, unassuming fellow radiates sweetness. Early in the first episode, he lets slip to Sam that they first met in high school choir.

When “Somebody Somewhere” star Bridget Everett was in her early 40s she heard a saying by LL Cool J: “Dreams don’t have deadlines.” The singer/actress/cabaret performer/writer was waiting tables in New York at the time while working the clubs and “just going for it and having some success but not really the kind of success I wanted,” she acknowledged during a recent Deadline Zoom conversation about her hit HBO comedy series.
That saying became a mantra for Everett, now 50. “I think it’s a great reminder that you can’t give up on yourself, whatever that is: if you want to be a singer, if you want to be this, that and the other, but if you have something that needs to happen then you should stick with it because it’s better to follow through than to let yourself down.”

The night before HBO’s “Somebody Somewhere” was set to shoot an episode revolving around a tornado, a real one came close to the show’s set. “Somebody Somewhere” star Bridget Everett recounted to Variety‘s Awards Circuit podcast how life imitated art that day, and vice versa.
“There was a real tornado that ripped through Naperville (Ill.) and also not far from where we were staying in Lamont,” she says. “Jay Duplass was directing that episode, and the people in the Duplass’ post, the VFX and all that stuff, they knew how to make it look real, and to kind of fake it in the right ways. But it was important to me that it felt like a real tornado, because I’m from Kansas, and I know what that shit looks and feels like.”

Jeff Hiller, Mary Catherine Garrison, Danny McCarthy and Mike Hagerty also star, with Murray Hill, Jon Hudson Odom, Heidi Johanningmeier and Jane Brody in recurring roles. HBO comedy series “Somebody Somewhere” starring Bridget Everett has been renewed for a second season three weeks before its Season 1 finale, the network said Thursday.
Everett is also an executive producer on the series, which was co-created and executive produced by Hannah Bos & Paul Thureen, writers on HBO’s “High Maintenance.”
“Bridget Everett brings such warmth to the screen,” Amy Gravitt, executive vice president of HBO Programming, said in a statement, “It’s been an absolute joy to see audiences share a sense of belonging with this ensemble. We’re delighted to have Hannah and Paul remind us all where we come from in another season of ‘Somebody Somewhere’.”
The logline: “The series follows Sam (played by Everett), a true Kansan on the surface, but, beneath it all, struggling to fit the hometown mold. Grappling with loss and acceptance, singing is Sam’s saving grace and leads her on a...

Photo: 'Somebody Somewhere' If you’ve ever been to a cabaret show, you know that they are raunchy, campy, and out-loud fun. Even though comedian Bridget Everett started her career doing these types of performances, it is in the new understated HBO drama series that is giving her the recognition she deserves. ‘Somebody, Somewhere’ written by Hannah Bos and Paul Thureen is released weekly and premiered on January 16th. After only a few episodes, critics are already calling the show one of the best of 2022. According to NPR, “‘Somebody Somewhere’ offers a modest, refreshingly clear-eyed take on the struggle to reinsert yourself into life, and grant yourself dispensation to find joy in the shadow of loss.” There are plenty of stories exploring social misfits, what is it that makes this one so special? It has something to do with Bridget Everett’s authenticity in playing a role so close to her real life.

We know Hollywood is a landscape of dreams broken, delayed, and often unseen. It’s this fantasy that is at the heart of why we love watching television. But there’s something similarly satisfying with seeing hard work pay off, as it has with the HBO’s new series “Somebody Somewhere.” Comedienne Bridget Everett plays Sam, a Kansas woman struggling to find direction in the wake of her sister’s death. It’s been a long time coming for not just Everett, but the entire cast and creative team.
It’s a simple statement for a show that is seeking to buck the trend of what a television show looks like. It’s a show “where things happen in the cracks between what stories normally focus on,” co-creator Paul Thureen told IndieWire. Paul Thureen and Hannah Bos are both from the Midwest themselves and often write stuff about that part of the world,...

In the new series “Somebody Somewhere,” Bridget Everett’s character isn’t pleased when her friend Joel (Jeff Hiller), a gay man having a crisis, shares his vision board. “Dream all you want, Joel, but this is the future,” she declares, gesturing at the beige room around her to indicate the world they’re doomed to inhabit. “We’re in our 40s. And it hasn’t happened yet, has it? It hasn’t happened for you, it hasn’t happened for me — and that’s because it’s not going to happen.”
It’s a moment of nihilism on a comedy that finds a way to grace only after establishing pain at its heart. Here, Everett — a Kansas-born stand-up and cabaret artist known for her appearances on “Inside Amy Schumer” — plays Sam, a version of herself had she never been discovered. When Brian Dennehy died this past April at the age of 81, the “Everyman” character actor of extraordinary complexity left behind memorable performances in such films as 1979’s “10,” 1982’s “First Blood,” 1985’s “Cocoon” and “Silverado” and 1990 “Presumed Innocent,” countless TV appearances and gut wrenching, Tony Award-winning turns as Willy Loman in the 1999 revival of Arthur Miller’s “Death of a Salesman” and as James Tyrone in the 2000 revival of Eugene O’Neill’s “Long Day’s Journey Into Night.”
“He was a towering, fearless actor taking on the greatest dramatic roles of the 20th century,” Robert Falls, artistic director of the Goodman Theater in Chicago, told the New York Times. “There were mountains that had to be climbed, and he no problem throwing himself into climbing them.”

HBO is setting course for Kansas with “Somebody Somewhere,” an upcoming Bridget Everett-led comedy series.
Here’s the synopsis, per HBO: For all of its vast plains and endless prairies, Kansas can feel confining for someone like Sam Miller (Everett). Inspired by the life of comedian and singer Bridget Everett, Sam is a true Kansan on the surface but beneath it all struggles to fit the hometown mold. As she grapples with loss and acceptance, singing is Sam’s saving grace and leads her on a journey to discover herself and a community of outsiders that don’t fit in but don’t give up. “Somebody Somewhere” shows finding your people, and finding your voice, is possible. Anywhere. Somewhere.

Sometimes, a film manages to be big by actually being small and quiet. Concentrated in a small circle of family and neighbors, and centered around the mundane task of cleaning a dead relative’s home and refurbishing it for sale, Andrew Ahn’s sophomore feature “Driveways” speaks volumes about life, death, growing up and the contemporary America. The film premiered at last year’s edition of Berlinale before going on a predominantly American festival tour. Since last month, it is available on VOD.
Kathy is the single mother of Cody (Lucas Jaye in a breakthrough role) and the two of them arrive to an unnamed upstate New York town to clear out the house of her late sister Kelly. The sisters were estranged for a great part of their lives, Kelly is a decade or so older, and Kathy is simply the only living relative who can inherit the house.

You might be craving those loud, brash, blowed-up-real-good blockbusters that’d normally lay claim to half the screens of multiplexes this month. It’s almost the beginning of summer, and who has the willpower to fight that seasonal Pavlovian urge? (Just watch out for any action movie in which A-list stars are in a race against time with a killer virus. Still too soon.) Or maybe, during this particularly dark timeline we’re stuck in, you’re in need of something more intimate, intricate and attuned to human interactions — “smaller...

In case it’s not glaringly obvious at this point, representation matters. In front of the camera, but behind it as well — perhaps even more so. Take, for instance, Andrew Ahn’s latest film, “Driveways.” The film stars Hong Chau as a single mother tasked with packing up her hoarder sister’s house after her death. Meanwhile, her shy son Cody (Lucas Jaye) comes out of his shell through a friendship with an older neighbor, played by the late, great Brian Dennehy in one of his final film roles.
The film is not explicitly about Asian American identity, at least not in the way Ahn’s career-launching debut film, “Spa Night,” was — deliberately and devastatingly. But the story, of two outsiders thrust into a community by circumstances outside of their control and the various characters who either welcome or discomfort them, is subtly deepened and enriched by the fact that they are Asian American.

This Small Town: Ahn Aims for the Heart in Soulful Suburban Drama
Death acts as impetus in cinema, and in some cases characters must deal with what the dearly departed has left behind. Driveways is one of these stories, and finds its melancholic rhythms in the everyday humdrum of the Hudson Valley’s neighborhood streets. Along the lines of Kogonada’s Columbus and Ira Sach’s Little Men, as a quiet meditation on death, and from it, the blossoming of new friendship, Andrew Ahn’s follow up to Spa Night is in fact written by the team of Hannah Bos and Paul Thureen, and the triumvirate of voices is beautifully expressed on screen through a diverse and talented cast.…...

The winners of the 2020 Independent Spirit Awards are being announced live during today’s ceremony, hosted for the second year in a row by Aubrey Plaza (fresh off rave reviews from Sundance for her performance in the indie “Black Bear”). Both of these films are nominated for Best Feature along with Terrence Malick’s “A Hidden Life,” Lulu Wang’s “The Farewell,” Noah Baumbach’s “Marriage Story,” and Chinonye Chukwu’s “Clemency.”
