From the director of A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night comes The Bad Batch. Don't go past the fence...
Warning: beyond this fence is no longer the territory of Texas, we see in the opening shot of the first trailer for the upcoming dystopian film The Bad Batch. Anyone you might encounter beyond the fence is not American and is not subject to its laws. Good luck. The Bad Batch trailer shows a society outside of society in the wastelands of Texas, where the night life is still wild and amputation appears to be commonplace.

She became an instant rockstar when A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (a film that we’ll affectionally look back at in two decades from now and consider it a seminal rocket launch beginning) was unleashed on (mostly) unsuspecting Sundance audiences in 2014. The Iranian-American filmmaker received a lot of nurturing from industry folk for her sophomore project which was announced as the best piece of news to begin 2015. Backed by none other than Annapurna Pictures’ Megan Ellison and Vice’s Danny Gabai and Sina Sayyah, production on Ana Lily Amirpour‘s The Bad Batch began back in April with hellva cast in Jason Momoa, Jim Carrey, Keanu Reeves, Suki Waterhouse and Diego Luna joining the ranks. While the more buzz worthy setting of Sundance appears logical, this might be destined to play as a prestige competitive slot at more internationally market friendly fests such as Cannes and/or Venice.

Now here's an interesting one, writer/director Ana Lily Amirpour, whose vampire feature A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night made waves last year, is setting up her next project and she has the support of Megan Ellison's Annapurna Pictures and she's lining up an interesting cast for what sounds like a fascinating feature. Described as a "cannibal love story", The Bad Batch as a post-apocalyptic tale set in a Texas wasteland where a community of cannibals reside. The shift from what you may expect from such a story is that this is a love story about a cannibal known as Miami Man (Jason Momoa) and his food. Joining Momoa in the picture are Jim Carrey, Keanu Reeves, Suki Waterhouse and Diego Luna with The Wrap reporting Waterhouse has landed the female lead, a character named Arlen. Luna will play a man named Jimmy. Reeves will play The Dream...

Just one night before the Oscars take over town, stars flocked to the 2015 Film Independent Spirit Awards on the Santa Monica Beach on Saturday (February 21).
Fred Armisen and Kristen Bell joined forces for co-hosting duties and put on a fabulous show as actors and actresses including Scarlett Johansson, Ethan Hawke, Jessica Chastain, Cate Blanchett, Jared Leto and Emma Stone turned up to lend their star power to the IFC airing ceremony.
As for this year's cream of the crop, Michael Keaton (Birdman), Julianne Moore (Still Alice), J.K. Simmons (Whiplash) and Patricia Arquette (Boyhood) took home top honors in the lead and supporting acting categories.
Meanwhile, in what very well may be an indicator for what's to come tomorrow at the Academy Awards, "Birdman" was recognized as Best Feature while Richard Linklater nabbed Best Director accolades for "Boyhood".

The 2015 Spirit Awards were handed out today and it was Birdman taking Best Feature and Best Actor (Michael Keaton) while Boyhood went home a double winner taking Best Director (Richard Linklater) and Best Supporting Actress (Patricia Arquette). However, while that's the result for the two big guns that will be going head-to-head at tomorrow night's Oscars, Nightcrawler was also a double winner taking Best Screenplay and Best First Feature, both awarded to writer/director Dan Gilroy. Otherwise, no big surprises with Julianne Moore (Still Alice) taking Best Actress and J.K. Simmons (Whiplash) taking Supporting Actor, Citizenfour took Best Documentary and Birdman scored a third win for Emmanuel Lubezki for Best Cinematography. Justin Simien (Dear White People) took home Best First Screenplay and, whoa!, Look!, Whiplash was also a double winner, with Tom Cross winning for Best Editing (well deserved!) and anticipated Oscar winner in the same category, Ida won Best Foreign Language Film.

"The Bad Batch" promises to be yet another genre-bending film from director Amirpour, who burst from Sundance onto the indie scene and won a Gotham Award for her subversive and darkly witty B&W debut "A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night." Nominees for the 30th annual Film Independent Spirit Awards were announced Tuesday, with films such as "Birdman," "Selma," "Boyhood," and "Whiplash" racking up multiple nods.
"Birdman" led the pack with six nominations, including Best Feature, Best Director, and nods in all four acting categories. "Selma" and "Boyhood" tied at five nominations apiece, while "Whiplash" scored four.
The Independent Spirit Awards are seen as an alternative to the Oscars, and are given out to films that are made for less than $20 million. They also hand out a special statuette to a film made for less than $500,000.
This year, "Foxcatcher" (starring Steve Carell, Channing Tatum, and Mark Ruffalo) and "Inherent Vice" were cited for a special distinction award and the Robert Altman Award, respectively. Oscar hopefuls including Jake Gyllenhaal ("Nightcrawler"), Julianne Moore ("Still Alice"), Michael Keaton ("Birdman"), and Patricia Arquette ("Boyhood") also received nominations.

A long time in the making, Reach Me, from filmmaker/actor John Herzfeld brings ‘positive thinking’ and ‘self-help’ to the big screen. It stars a bevy of Herzfeld’s actor friends and friends of friends, including Sylvester Stallone, Kyra Sedgwick and Kevin Connolly.
The title is one of a dozen or so newcomers opening in limited release this weekend. Music Box’s Happy Valley and Kino Lorber’s Monk With A Camera are among Friday’s debuting documentaries.
Happy Valley, named after the area where Pennsylvania State University is located, dives into the child sexual-abuse scandal that rocked Penn State, while Monk looks at an unlikely ascetic who gave up life in the fast lane.
Kino Lorber also is launching Iranian Western Vampire pic A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night, which it is releasing with Vice Films. The title, which was born out of a previous short film, debuted at Sundance in January.

A stylish and soulful film, A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night is a film of bad men, dangerous women, love and beautiful images. More than just a vampire film, Ana Lily Amirpour crafts an eerie, moody tone poem that’s a fantastic film to watch.
Bad City an industrial town, filled by all matter of folks from the scrupulous to the shady. Arash (Arash Marandi), one such citizen, longs to just get in his nice car and go. Working as a landscaper and living with his junkie father is proving more difficult, when his father runs afoul of a local drug dealer. A local prostitute (Mozhan Marnò) has just turned 30 and wants to escape as well. They all long for better lives, but are unable to move from their station. This relatively tranquil, yet unfulfilling existence, is slowly shattered as a vampire (Sheila Vand) begins stalking the streets,...

The Woodshed, the new horror company from Elijah Wood, Daniel Noah, and Josh C. Waller, has revealed two new projects: an original production A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night, and the completed feature Toad Road from writer-director Jason Banker.
From Variety:
The Woodshed is partnering with Blackout Films and Random Bench on “Toad Road,” which will be the first film to go out under ”The Woodshed Presents” banner.
“The Woodshed Presents” banner. The Woodshed partners discovered the pic when programming Nightmare City, a horror film festival collaboration between the Cinefamily, Cinespia and the Woodshed that is currently unfolding around Los Angeles.
“Programming the festival, we viewed scores of new horror films, but Toad Road leapt out of the pack with its devastating power. We knew we had to do whatever we could to make sure this special film is seen,” Wood said.
