Anyone who’s kept pace with “Revenge of the Remakes” here on Bloody Disgusting knows I’m a rather outspoken advocate for horror remakes. They’re inevitable, serve multiple purposes, and aren’t the poison to filmmaking culture some claim. That said? Matt Sobel’s American remake of Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala’s Goodnight Mommy exemplifies everything you hate to see from such filmmaking practices. The Americanization bug strikes again, not even a decade since the Austrian dread machine’s 2014 release.
What’s worse? Sobel and screenwriter Kyle Warren rightfully approach Goodnight Mommy with an alternate vision. Unfortunately, it’s born from lullaby-babied intentions and uttered words that drive horror audiences bonkers. As Sobel reveals in his director’s statement: “We saw the opportunity to do something quite common in theater but unusual in cinema: to adhere roughly to the original plot but reframe it in a way that...

Director Matt Sobel called on production designer Mary Colston and cinematographer Alexander Dynan to subtly emphasize a sense of foreboding in his reimagining of the 2014 Austrian psychological thriller “Goodnight Mommy,” on Prime Video.
Naomi Watts plays a mother who returns home to her sons after having cosmetic surgery, but she’s not quite the same person who left them. Her bandaged face as she recovers hides more than a person healing from a procedure.
Colston wanted the family’s house to play on the idea that it was “a map of trauma.” The home starts out bright and inviting with white walls and high ceilings — a look she calls “Goop mom,” after Gwyneth Paltrow’s aspirational brand.
But as the story unfolds, the boys, Elias (Cameron Crovetti) and Lucas (Nicholas Crovetti), start to notice a behavioral change in their mother. She tears up their drawings; sets up new house rules,...

Director Matt Sobel and screenwriter Kyle Warren take a different approach to the horror in their remake of 2014’s Goodnight Mommy, now available on Prime Video.
In this update, “twin brothers (Cameron Crovetti and Nicholas Crovetti) arrive at their mother’s (Naomi Watts) country home to discover her face covered in bandages—the result, she explains, of recent cosmetic surgery—they immediately sense that something doesn’t add up. She sets strange new house rules, smokes in her bathroom, and secretly rips up a drawing they gave her—things their loving mother would never do.
“As her behavior grows increasingly bizarre and erratic, a horrifying thought takes root in the boys’ minds: The sinking suspicion that the woman beneath the gauze, who’s making their food and sleeping in the next room, isn’t their mother at all.”
Bloody Disgusting chatted with Sobel about his update, where the filmmaker explained...

If you’ve seen the original, there’s little point in watching “Goodnight Mommy,” out now on Prime Video. Yes, that 2014 film did not feature a performance by Naomi Watts as the mother who is tortured by her twin sons, but that’s about the only added bonus. This “Goodnight Mommy” Enligh-Language redo, from director Matt Sobel (“Take Me to the River”) and writer Kyle Warren, is strictly for those who haven’t experienced the chilling Austrian original from filmmakers Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala and are also weary of subtitles.

It is probably easy to argue that the 2014 Austrian film "Goodnight Mommy" helped to usher in the existence of "elevated horror" into the mainstream. Upon its release, it garnered almost near-universal acclaim for its subversion of horror conventions and its omnipresent feeling of dread. How you feel about the elevated horror label will likely affect whether you enjoy Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala's feature debut, and I've certainly heard both passionate defenses and takedowns of the movie over the years for this very reason.
Despite this division, it is likely that both elevated horror fans and detractors won't find much to enjoy in Matt Sobel's English-language remake, now streaming on Prime Video. Twin brothers Elias and Lukas (Cameron and Nicholas Crovetti) are dropped off at a posh cabin in the woods to visit their actress mother (Naomi Watts). She recently had cosmetic surgery, her face mostly obscured through bandages.

For most horror remakes, even mediocrity is a respectable outcome. By now, every horror fan should know the feeling of walking into a remake with modest expectations, then walking out feeling more disappointed than thought possible.
“Goodnight Mommy” largely succeeds in its quest to avoid that fate. Matt Sobel’s reimagining of Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala’s 2014 Austrian film of the same name never tries to reinvent the wheel, but while it lacks the potency of the original film, it manages to keep horror lovers entertained without ever embarrassing itself.
Lukas and Elias (Cameron and Nicholas Crovetti) can’t catch a break. The name Naomi Watts is now, in the year 2022, synonymous with horror royalty. The beloved actress has graced the silver screen in many a terrifying tale — "The Ring" and "Funny Games" come to mind — but she's finally taking on another horror character and making it her own.
Watts stars in the upcoming "Goodnight Mommy" reboot film from Prime Video, and it's great to see her take on the titular mother character, because, let's be real, she plays those quite well, especially in a creepy context. But no matter the maternal situation of her character, she plays her horror leading ladies with a fierceness and pure terror that is unmatched. /Film's own Danielle Ryan sat down with the film's director, Matt Sobel, and he revealed that he was happy to be able to pay homage to one of Watts' most famous horror roles — her turn in "Mulholland Drive," of course — in "Goodnight Mommy.

Horror fans aren’t the only ones with reservations about remaking the 2014 psychological horror film “Goodnight Mommy.” Naomi Watts, who leads the American remake of the critically revered Austrian film from 2007, also had her doubts. The film, which follows two twin sons who begin to suspect their mother is an imposter following plastic surgery, was a major critical hit and an early example of the kind of elevated horror that is so popular today. As the mother, Watts’ face is covered in a gauze bandage for much of the film, presenting a unique challenge for the actress.
“When you learn the rules and the limitations, you figure out what you can do and you double down on them and then you really get very specific,” Watts said in a recent interview with IndieWire. “Obviously in a close-up, the eyes were all I had. In a wider shot, I used my...

"Goodnight Mommy" is now streaming on Prime Video — no, not the original 2014 Austrian film, but the 2022 American remake or "reimagining," starring Naomi Watts, Cameron Corvetti ("The Boys"), and Nicholas Crovetti ("Big Little Lies"). The film, per the official synopsis, tells the story of twin brothers who "arrive at their mother's country home to discover her face covered in bandages" and begin to suspect that "the woman beneath the gauze isn't their mother at all." Director Matt Sobel is at the helm of this new version, and he knows you may have questions about it, chief among them being, "Why remake it at all?"
In an exclusive interview with /Film's Danielle Ryan, Sobel explained that he had a similar line of thinking when he was first approached about the possibility of spearheading an English-language version of "Goodnight Mommy." To celebrate the release of Goodnight Mommy, which arrives on Amazon Prime Video this weekend, we sat down with the cast of this chilling remake to find out all about it.
When twin brothers (Cameron and Nicholas Crovetti) arrive at their mother’s (Naomi Watts) country home to discover her face covered in bandages— the result, she explains, of recent cosmetic surgery—they immediately sense that something doesn’t add up. She sets strange new house rules, smokes in her bathroom, and secretly rips up a drawing they gave her—things their loving mother would never do. As her behavior grows increasingly bizarre and erratic, a horrifying thought takes root in the boys’ minds: The sinking suspicion that the woman beneath the gauze, who’s making their food and sleeping in the next room, isn’t their mother at all.

Based on the 2015 Austrian horror film of the same name from writers/directors Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz, Matt Sobel’s remake of Goodnight Mommy, starring Naomi Watts falls very much in the column of why bother when weighing the benefits of an English-speaking version versus a craftier, often scarier incarnation.
In the opening frames of the film, twin brothers Elias (Cameron Crovetti) and Lucas (Nicholas Crovetti) are dropped off by their father to spend some time with their mother (Watts) at her country home. Almost immediately, the pair sense that something is amiss with mom and, as they watch the bandaged woman purporting to be their mother, the twins begin to suspect that something sinister has happened to their actual mother, possibly even involving this obvious imposter.

Goodnight Mommy was a 2014 Austrian horror that came and went with a small murmur of excitement, largely due to the twist hidden in its final act. Two kids, Lukas and Elias, bearing the feral stares and thin faces of baby bogeymen, arrive home one afternoon to find their mum back from the hospital. She’s undergone a cosmetic procedure and her head is mummified in bandages. But dear mother is so strange now: she refuses to acknowledge Lukas, and grows cruel and violent when the boys disobey her. Soon, they become convinced she’s been replaced by an imposter.
The film, directed by Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala, defined itself both through its cruelty and its sparseness – a cousin to the works of fellow Austrian provocateur Michael Haneke, with a dash of The Shining’s alienating architecture.

Naomi Watts is no stranger to making horror movies with kids. She was phenomenal in Gore Verbinski's remake of Hideo Nakata's "The Ring" as a mother desperate to save her son from the fatal consequences of having watched a cursed videotape. She also appeared in Jim Sheridan's "Dream House," which leans in part on the old creepy dead girls trope.
So Watts is right at home in Matt Sobel's remake of Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala's "Goodnight Mommy," in which a woman, swathed in facial bandages, is reunited with her young twin sons (Cameron and Nicholas Crovetti) after she's undergone extensive, yet unexplained cosmetic surgery. All her boys know is that the blinds must be drawn due to her light sensitivity, and they cannot enter her bedroom or office. Her strict nature strikes the boys as odd. Watching the remake of a horror movie is a lot like watching a magic trick after you know how it’s done. You may have lost your sense of wonder at the trick itself, but if they’re doing it right, you’ve got an even deeper appreciation for the skill and showmanship of the magician.
The words “if they’re doing it right” are doing a lot of heavy lifting in that paragraph. Matt Sobel’s remake of Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz’s “Goodnight Mommy” tries to pull off the same mysteries and revelations from the original, but for some reason Sobel is doing it without the majority of the scares.
So much of the film’s brutality has been removed in favor of melodrama and CGI fake-outs that it doesn’t matter that the cast is bringing their A-game. The game has already been called due to lack of interest.

Director Matt Sobel doesn't really like remakes of foreign horror films for American audiences, but he wanted to try and do something a bit different. In his latest, "Goodnight Mommy," coming to Prime Video on September 16, 2022, the director tackled a new take on the 2016 Austrian film of the same name. The 2022 "Goodnight Mommy" stars Naomi Watts as a mother who has undergone some changes, and Nicholas and Cameron Crovetti as her twin sons who don't know if they trust her anymore. It's an intimate thriller with bits of family drama, following the boys as they try to figure out what happened to Mother.

In director Matt Sobel’s latest, the filmmaker takes on the English language remake of Goodnight Mommy. The story revolves around twin boys going to stay with their mother, who recently had reconstructive surgery. It’s a fascinating tale, as it was in the original feature. This time around, Naomi Watts is terrific as the mother in question, and Cameron Crovetti and Nicholas Crovetti shine as the young boys uncertain of the woman underneath the mask they are calling “mother.” With its upcoming release on Prime, you’ll be able to catch this creepy tale this Friday.
Earlier this week, I had the great pleasure of speaking to the incredibly talented Naomi Watts, as well as her young co-stars. For Ms. Watts, she opened up about playing a mom dealing with an extraordinary situation. As well, the challenge of having to wear a mask to cover your face for much of the movie.

Few remakes feel necessary, but English-language versions of international horror films have an especially difficult time justifying their existence. We certainly didn’t need George Sluizer or Michael Haneke to remake their own “The Vanishing” and “Funny Games” for the benefit of subtitle-averse audiences, nor was anyone asking for a “Let the Right One In” remake when it was first released. “Need” and “want” are two different things, of course, and it’s hardly unheard of for one of these remakes to be quite good — just ask Naomi Watts, who followed her star-making turn in “Mulholland Drive” with “The Ring.” The two-time Oscar nominee now finds herself as the face of Matt Sobel’s remake of Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala’s “Goodnight Mommy.” Well, maybe not the face exactly — as in the original, her head is obscured by surgical bandages for reasons that aren’t immediately made clear.

Naomi Watts once again leads an American remake of an acclaimed international horror film. This time, she stars in an English language update of the 2014 Austrian horror movie by Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala, Goodnight Mommy. This remake may not drastically shake up the story, but it does alter its approach to psychological horror and serves as a solid introduction for the unacquainted.
Dad (Peter Hermann) drops twins Elias (Cameron Crovetti) and Lukas (Nicholas Crovetti) off at their mother’s countryside home for a stay. The boys are immediately taken aback when greeted by the heavily gauzed appearance of their Mother (Watts). While she apologizes, blaming a cosmetic procedure, it’s not just her covered head that leaves the twins on edge. Mother is quick to anger, and that’s only the beginning of her peculiar behavior that leaves Elias and Lukas suspicious that she’s not who she says she is.

Having starred in the U.S. remakes of The Ring and Funny Games, Naomi Watts leads another American reimagining of foreign-language horror with Goodnight Mommy. The original 2014 Austrian feature, co-directed by Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala, was a visceral psycho-chiller about mother-son ties twisted by distrust and withheld affection into a vicious nightmare. It was a fiendish exercise in exactingly controlled tone, atmosphere and ambiguity, which paid off with a final-act reveal that effectively recalibrated the entire story. Matt Sobel’s overhaul tones down the cruelty and eliminates the more grotesque touches, resulting in a chamber drama that never gets under the skin.
Premiering Sept. 16 on Amazon, the film is middle-tier streaming fare — well-acted, visually slick and powered by an ominous orchestral score from Alex Weston that loads up on heavy sawing strings. But that music struggles to do the unsettling work that...

While horror fans may already be familiar with Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala's 2014 film "Goodnight Mommy," the new version comes courtesy of Prime Video and features a new cast taking on the freaky source material. Naomi Watts stars as the mother, a woman who wears mysterious face bandages that alienate her from her twin sons. When the kids come to stay with her after some time away, they grow suspicious of her new appearance and personality changes, and begin to wonder whether she's actually their mother at all.

When twin brothers (Cameron and Nicholas Crovetti) arrive at their mother’s (Naomi Watts) country home to discover her face covered in bandages—the result, she explains, of recent cosmetic surgery—they immediately sense that something doesn’t add up.

Coming to Prime Video on September 16 is Goodnight Mommy.
Twin brothers (Cameron and Nicholas Crovetti) arrive at their Mother’s country home (Naomi Watts) to discover her face covered in surgical bandages. Immediately something is off. Their Mother smokes, sets strict rules, refuses to sing their favorite bedtime song, and secretly rips up a drawing Elias gives her — things their previously warm, caring mom would never do. They begin to suspect the woman is not their mother at all, but even after she turns violent, the police don’t believe the children are in danger. Becoming increasingly suspicious, the boys try to uncover who they are really living with, in this suspenseful, psychological thriller.
Goodnight Mommy is directed by Matt Sobel from a screenplay by Kyle Warren, based on the 2014 film Goodnight Mommy (written and directed by Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala, produced by Ulrich Seidl).

Here we go again, but not in the way you might be expecting. The 2014 horror hit "Goodnight Mommy," is getting an American reboot and we now have the film's first trailer.
The sneak peek for the Prime Video original showcases Naomi Watts in the title matriarchal role. Much like the first film, the movie follows a mother reuniting with her twin sons following a cosmetic surgery that requires her to wear bandages around her entire face and head. Slowly, the boys start to suspect their mother, well, isn't who she says she is, and they join forces to unmask her and find out the truth.
The remake stars Watts alongside Cameron and Nicholas Crovetti, while "Younger" star Peter Hermann rounds out the cast of the film. "Take Me to the River" director Matt Sobel helmed the film from a script by Kyle Warren, who is known for his work on Fox's short-lived "Lethal Weapon" series.

Naomi Watts stars as an unsettling mother whose face is wrapped in bandages in the official trailer for Matt Sobel’s “Goodnight Mommy.”
A remake of the 2014 Austrian film of the same name, the horror movie follows two twin brothers, played by real-life twins Cameron and Nicholas Crovetti, who visit their mother after her recent reconstructive surgery. However, it quickly becomes clear something isn’t right with her.
Additional cast members for “Goodnight Mommy” include Jeremy Bobb, Crystal Lucas-Perry and Peter Hermann.
Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala wrote and directed the original 2014 film, which followed the same plot and was the Austrian entry for best foreign language film at the 88th Academy Awards but ultimately wasn’t nominated. Twenty years since “The Ring” and Naomi Watts is still terrifying audiences.
Austrian hit 2014 film “Goodnight Mommy” is reimagined for Amazon Prime Video, with Watts taking over the lead role as a bandaged mother who appears to have undergone facial cosmetic surgery. However, once she returns home to her twin sons (Cameron and Nicholas Crovetti), they realize something is very, very wrong. Is this really their mother, or an imposter?
Peter Hermann also stars in the film, with Matt Sobel (2015 Sundance sleeper “Take Me to the River”) directing from a script by Kyle Warren (“Lethal Weapon” series). “Goodnight Mommy” premieres September 16 on Prime Video.

[Editor’s Note: The following article contains spoilers for “Brand New Cherry Flavor,” including the ending.]
There are times when “Brand New Cherry Flavor” seems to exist in its own universe. The Netflix series, based on Todd Grimson’s book of the same name, takes place in an early-’90s Los Angeles, bathed in equal layers of possibility and dread.
Lisa Nova (Rosa Salazar) arrives in this thick rainbow soup of a city with only one valuable item in tow: a short film called “Lucy’s Eye” that transfixes anyone who watches it. Director Matt Sobel, who was behind the camera for the show’s fourth and fifth episodes, directed the film-within-a-film. It’s an ideal example of how “Brand New Cherry Flavor” takes a hazy, fictional version of LA filled with inexplicable oddities and delivers something tangible.
“It’s got this raw energy, right? It’s not supposed to be this perfect masterpiece,” said series co-creator and co-showrunner Nick Antosca. “It’s supposed to show...

“Brand New Cherry Flavor” takes place roughly 30 years ago. If the murderer’s row of college radio deep cuts didn’t eventually tip you off, the on-screen setup puts the new Netflix show somewhere in the “early ’90s.” What transpires after that simple introduction is a meticulous, slow-motion fever dream, one that transpires with the occasional help of pay phones, VHS tapes, and print headlines.
The new limited series has plenty more on its mind than aping a particular time and place. “Brand New Cherry Flavor” carries all the psychological trappings that come with the curdled glamor of Los Angeles, but this is a specific kind of Hollywood story; one that exists in its own self-contained universe, detached from a conventional decade-signaling aesthetic. Very quickly, the show establishes its primary concern isn’t enduring stardom or lavish luxury. It’s a supernatural revenge tale brought on by what’s ostensibly a simple legal dispute.

Naomi Watts’ update on the cult horror film “Goodnight Mommy” just secured two crucial roles in Cameron and Nicholas Crovetti.
The twin boys will play Watts’ sons in the Amazon Studios project, which just kicked off production in New Jersey. Matt Sobel is directing the new take on the film, whose predecessor was selected as Austria’s entry for best international film at the 2015 Oscars.
The story follows two brothers who arrive at their mother’s country home to discover her face covered in bandages, what she says is the result of a recent cosmetic surgery. As her behavior grows increasingly erratic, a horrifying question takes root in the boys’ minds: what if the woman beneath the gauze isn’t their mother at all?

It looks like Naomi Watts has covered the niche of English-language remakes of psychologically intense Austrian thrillers. After leading Michael Haneke’s own remake of his film Funny Games, the actress is now set to take on a new take on Goodnight Mommy.
Released in 2014, Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala’s original film concerns the journey of twin boys with their mother after she had facial reconstructive surgery. With a major twist best left unspoiled, the film was Austrian’s Oscar entry and since then the directing duo went on to helm The Lodge with Riley Keough.
Variety reports that Matt Sobel (Take Me To The River) will direct the remake, set up at Amazon Studios, from a script by Kyle Warren while Franz and Fiala are on board as executive producers. Watch the trailer for the original film below.

Alas, Hollywood is going to Hollywood, and Amazon is going to remake “Goodnight, Mommy.”
