Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series spotlighting the year’s most talked-about scripts continues with Fingernails, the Apple Original Films sci-fi love story of sorts that marks the English-language debut of Greek writer-director Christos Nikou. It came off the success of his debut pic Apples, which was Greece’s submission to last year’s Oscar race.
Fingernails, which features a cast including Jessie Buckley, Riz Ahmed, Jeremy Allen White, Luke Wilson and Annie Murphy, premiered at this year’s Telluride Film Festival and hit theaters and Apple TV+ earlier this month. It reunites the Apples executive producing team of Nikou and Dirty Films and partners Cate Blanchett, Coco Francini and Andrew Upton. FilmNation Entertainment’s Lucas Wiesendanger is also a producer.
The script was penned by Nikou and his Apples co-screenwriter and pal Stavros Raptis, joined by UK scribe Sam Steiner after Nikou read Steiner’s script for Morning (now...

Review: Science fiction, as a genre, is often associated with space battles, aliens, and other action-oriented elements. Sometimes, as in the films Her and Gattaca, sci-fi can be dramatic and take a slight twist on the very near future. Fingernails follows that tradition by presenting a contemporary world almost the same as our own but with one main difference: a process where a couple can be tested to confirm that they are compatible and truly in love. It is with that conceit that filmmaker Christos Nikou looks at two people, Anna and Amir, who have tested positive with others but find themselves falling in love with each other. The idea...

Greek writer-director Christos Nikou wanted to explore the modern concept of love when he approached his English-language debut Fingernails starring Jessie Buckley, Riz Ahmed and Luke Wilson. Speaking at Deadline’s Contenders London event, the Apples director admitted that the concept of dating apps and using algorithms to find love was an idea that intrigued him.
“I was always trying to understand what love is and why we are so obsessed with love and why we’re looking for love,” said Nikou. “But, also, I think that right now a lot of people, and especially from the younger generation, are looking at love in a different way. I mean, imagine that they are letting an algorithm decide about them and they are using their finger to swipe right or left in order to find the perfect match that is compatible for them. That’s why we decided to do a...

Some people say love is a battlefield, but what if there was a scientific solution to determining your compatibility with your chosen partner? Would the results confirm your evolution from lust to emotional adoration? Could you discover if the person you’re with is better suited for someone else? Some people would prefer to remain in blissful ignorance, but in Apple TV+‘s Fingernails trailer, love gets tested, and the results could destroy even the strongest of bonds.
Christos Nikou directs Fingernails from a script he co-wrote with Stavros Raptis and Sam Steiner. The story focuses on Anna (Jessie Buckley) and Ryan (Jeremy Allen White), a couple who believe they’ve found true love, and a controversial new technology proves it. There’s just one problem. Anna is curious to know if the results are accurate. So, she takes a position at a love testing institute, where she meets Amir (Riz Ahmed), and sparks fly.

“Fingernails” presents a world where true love can be determined by the torn-out fingernails of a potential couple. It’s just the latest film to to posit (and deconstruct) a scientific approach to love. Christos Nikou’s rom-com/body horror flick stars Jessie Buckley, Jeremy Allen White and Riz Ahmed. Anna (Buckley) is a new employee at a romance institution, which uses all kinds of science to quantify and determine true love.
While she is seemingly in a happy relationship with Ryan (White), she develops an interest in a coworker (Ahmed). Can Anna be in love with two people at the same time? Not according to the science touted by the Romance Institute. Oh, and Armi has a girlfriend as well (Annie Murphy).
The trailer shows off the various facets of a romance institution run by Luke Wilson, who calls the notion of being in love with two people “a biological impossibility.

Christos Nikou’s “Fingernails” challenges the role of technology in modern love stories, with Jessie Buckley and Riz Ahmed starring as co-workers at a company that specializes in determining people’s soulmates based on their (you’re hearing this right) fingernails. The film first premiered at Telluride.
Buckley plays Anna, a new employee at the Love Institute, where the machines are housed. She starts training with senior instructor Amir (Ahmed), yet Anna is already committed to Ryan (Jeremy Allen White), and the machine has already confirmed they are a perfect match. So why is she developing feelings for Amir?

Jessie Buckley, Jeremy Allen White and Riz Ahmed find themselves caught in a love triangle in the new Apple film “Fingernails,” which debuted its first trailer Tuesday morning.
Directed by Christos Nikou and produced by Cate Blanchett, the sci-fi film is set in a not-so-distant future. The story follows Anna (Buckley) and Ryan (White) who use a mathematical, machine-determined proceudre to determine if they are truly in love.
Luke Wilson plays Duncan, who heads up the Love Insitute. Anna declares she wants to work at the Institute because “Ginger Spice” studied there. She finds herself mentored by Amir, played by Ahmed. And the more time she spends around Amir and at the lab, she finds herself asking him, and herself “Is it possible that one person could be in love with two people at the same time?”

Is love quantifiable? No, but that doesn’t stop Greek filmmaker Christos Nikou from exploring that question over two dull, excruciating hours in Fingernails, his second feature and first in English. Like his directorial debut Apples, which concerned a man recovering from an amnesia-inducing illness that spreads worldwide, Fingernails concocts a high concept that attempts to look at an aspect about the human condition. In this case it’s love, as Nikou and co-writers Sam Steiner and Stavros Raptis imagine a world where a couple’s love can be measured as an objective figure through technology. Directed as a droll dramedy with a cast that can all do better than this, Fingernails is a pointless effort at finding something more from a truism.

The passing pleasures of watching the fine young actors Jessie Buckley, Riz Ahmed and Jeremy Allen White can’t make up for the increasing distaste that develops from contact with Fingernails, an irritating and, finally, ridiculous examination of relationship matchmaking carried far too far. Greek director Christos Nikou won unanimous critical plaudits for his compellingly eerie debut feature Apples, which dealt with amnesia patients, and here again he appears drawn to troubled and mysterious states of mind that develop in the quest for love, commitment and some sense of security in modern life. The film debuted at the Telluride Film Festival and screened at the Toronto Film Festival.
If love means never having to say you’re sorry, as the 1970 smash hit Love Story ridiculously proclaimed, then the by-word for this new exploration of modern amour should be that love means letting your would-be soulmate yank all your fingernails out.

Christos Nikou’s “Fingernails” effectively pathologizes the unspoken secret at the heart of the romantic comedy genre: Falling in love is the easiest thing in the world, but staying in love is something you have to work on every day if you want it to last that long.
It’s a secret epitomized (and half-heartedly acknowledged) by the likes of “Love, Actually,” a sprawling matrix of warm and fuzzy crushes in which the only married couple is mired in an unresolvable crisis. Everybody gets verklempt at a grand gesture or a mad dash to the airport in the third act, but what happens after the credits roll? What happens when Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan get...

It’s not every director who gets to turn Cate Blanchett down. Rarer still for a first-time filmmaker from Europe whose arty, offbeat debut — a poetic, surreal, soulful meditation on memory and grief — might have easily escaped the attention of Hollywood royalty.
But “Apples,” by Greek director Christos Nikou, charmed audiences after its 2020 premiere at the Venice Film Festival, where Blanchett presided over the main competition jury. After being wowed by a film that would go on to complete the fall-festival trifecta at Telluride and Toronto, Blanchett reached out to the filmmaker for a sit-down on the Lido.
When he read the text, Nikou couldn’t believe his eyes.
“‘No, that’s a joke,’” he recalls thinking at the time, adding with an embarrassed laugh that he considered skipping the meeting altogether. But Nikou’s better judgment got the best of him, and when Blanchett did indeed turn up for their breakfast tête-à-tête,...

In the present-day-adjacent time period in the unspecified city where Fingernails unfolds, a newish technology has been embraced by a growing number of couples. Promising “no more uncertainty” and “no more divorce,” the simple but physically daunting test enables people to be sure they’ve found a true love connection. All that’s required is the removal of one fingernail from each participant. There will be blood, yes, but mainly there’s a well-written and beautifully performed investigation of yearning and the mysterious realm that apps and algorithms can only profess to quantify.

The Bear‘s Jeremy Allen White is going from the kitchen to an institute that aims to calculate the depths of one person’s love for another in Apple Original Films Fingernails. The English-language feature hails from Christos Nikou, the award-winning filmmaker behind 2020’s Apples and several other projects.
Fingernails is a science-fiction love story about an institution developing a test to measure the amount of love between couples. Is their love genuine? Does a pattern of constant compromise weaken their bond over time? The institute wants couples to succeed, though keeping the fire burning is more complex than one might assume. In the film, Anna (Buckley) starts working at the institute as an assistant to Trevor (Ahmed), an enigmatic instructor. Meanwhile, White plays Ryan, Anna’s long-time partner in a certified love relationship.
Nikou directs Fingernails from a script he co-wrote with Stavros Raptis and Sam Steiner.

Apple Original Films has landed out of Cannes the worldwide rights to a package for “Fingernails,” a science-fiction film and romance that will star Jessie Buckley and Riz Ahmed, an individual with knowledge of the sale told TheWrap.
“Fingernails” is the English-language debut of the Greek director of “Apples,” Christos Nikou. Production is expected to begin later this year.

Carey Mulligan is currently riding one of the great highs of her career. Her new film Promising Young Woman has been playing to critical success and we also quite liked The Dig, Simon Stone’s new film co-starring Ralph Fiennes that arrives on Netflix today. Now, she can add a new film from Greek director Christos Nikou to her list of upcoming projects.
Fingernails will be Nikou’s English-language feature film debut, Deadline reports. His breakout film Apples is Greece’s submission for the Best International Feature Oscar this year. There's nothing like watch a good film that leaves you with that warm embrace of cinema. Apples was my first screening of the 2020 Venice Film Festival, an interesting experience considering we're all wearing masks and sitting at least 1 meter (or ~3.3 feet) away from everyone else in the theater. But I'm happy to report it's an absolute delight. Apples is the feature directorial debut of a Greek filmmaker named Christos Nikou, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Stavros Raptis. Nikou is a bit of protégé of famed Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos; he worked as the second assistant director on Dogtooth years ago. Now he's ready to make his mark as a filmmaker in his own and his feature debut is worthy of our admiration. It's a very tender, understanding film that reminds us to live in our own way, no matter how hard that might be. Apples is set amidst a...

I love the Sundance Film Festival. The winners of the fest normally have long legs enough to last all the way until the Oscars. This year, for example, "Pariah" was one of the breakout hits from Sundance, and the Dee Rees coming-of-age flick is being distributed by Focus this month. Its star, Adepero Oduye, recently received the Best Female Lead nomination from the Independent Spirit Awards.
So now, Sundance has unveiled its in-competition slate for 2012 and the films, as always, are quite intriguing. The fest runs from Jan. 19th to the 29th in Park City, Utah. Check out the full list below:

They are making statements about the changing world we are living in. Some are straight-forward, some novel and some offbeat but always interesting. One can never predict. We know only at the end, and I love that.”
John Cooper, Director of the Sundance Film Festival, said, “In these challenging economic times, filmmakers have had to be more resourceful and truly independent in their approaches to filmmaking.

The Sundance Film Festival is the largest independent cinema festival in the United States. Held in January in Park City, Salt Lake City, the festival is a showcase for new work from American and international independent filmmakers. The Festival has changed over the decades from a low-profile venue for small-budget, independent creators from outside the Hollywood system to a media extravaganza for Hollywood celebrity actors, paparazzi, and luxury lounges set up by companies that are not affiliated with Sundance.
Now the festival is getting ready for the 2012 edition and today they announced the films competing in all categories.

Some of the biggest names on this Sundance list includes Antonio Campos, Mark Webber, Ry Russo-Young and So Yong Kim. Check out the list below.

Grab your ski jackets and swag bags and start warming up your eyeballs: the Sundance Film Festival is almost upon us. 2012's Sundance runs from January 19 to 29 in Park City, Utah, and today the fest announced their first wave of programming, 58 titles in the Us and World Dramatic and Documentary Competitions.
The slate so far includes plenty of familiar faces. Sundancers in 2012 will get the first crack at new movies from Antonio Campos ("Afterschool"), Kirby Dick ("This Film is Not Yet Rated"), Ira Sachs ("Forty Shades of Blue"), and Mark Webber ("Explicit Ills"). I'm also intrigued by "Nobody Walks" from "You Won't Miss Me" director Ry Russo-Young and "Tiny Furniture" director Lena Dunham (Russo-Young directed, the two co-wrote the screenplay) and a cast that includes John Krasinski, Olivia Thirlby, and Rosemarie DeWitt. Aubrey Plaza and Mark Duplass star in "Safety Not Guaranteed" about "a trio of magazine employees investigating a...

Of all the fourteen films/filmmakers mentioned we see Quentin Dupieux return to screen fairly quick after his debut film Rubber, we have Blue Tongue Films team member (Animal Kingdom, Hesher and tons of awesome short films) Kieran Darcy-Smith who gets behind the camera for Wish You Were Here with (see pic) Joel Edgerton topling. We have Dogtooth writer contributing to helmer Babis Makridis' debut film "L" and finally Czech director Bohdan Sláma (The Country Teacher (2009) and Something Like Happiness (2005)) coming to the festival with 4 Suns. Here's the complete selected items for this often overlooked World Dramatic Comp section. 4 Suns / Czech Republic (Director and screenwriter: Bohdan Sláma) — Immature Fogi attempts to straighten up and accept his responsibilities as a new husband and father, as well as role model to his troubled son from a previous relationship, but finds himself unable to change his nature, leaving him to watch haplessly...

Snow is falling, the temperature is dropping, movies are getting better. Some might say it's beginning to look a lot like Christmas but I say it's beginning to look a lot like Sundance. The 2012 Sundance Film Festival announced its first batch of films Wednesday, all of which are in competition. Meaning these are the films eligible for awards. It also means that, as of right now, these are the films you probably haven't heard of. But, at this time last year [1], the competition films included a ton that you've surely now heard of such as Another Earth, Circumstance, Like Crazy, Martha Marcy May Marlene, Pariah, The Guard, Tyrannosaur and Take Shelter. Those were just the narratives. In last year's documentary competition, films like Beats, Rhymes and Life, Being Elmo, How to Die in Oregon, Page One, Knuckle, Project Nim and Senna all played. Basically, while you probably haven't heard of these movies yet,...
