This New Play Will Make You Relive Your Entire Sex Life The second best way to spend two hours in the dark. By Naveen Kumar What if the person you were dating asked to reenact your combined sexual histories— with each other and on each other. From backseat blowjobs and adolescent fumblings to buried traumas and wild one night stands. That’s the premise of playwright Kirk Lynn’s new play Your Mother’s Copy of the Kama Sutra, running Off Broadway at Playwrights Horizons. It’s the only time you’re likely to sit in a dark room with a hundred strangers, knowing everyone is mentally revisiting the ghosts of sex-lives past. The play starts, naturally enough, with a blindfolded man down on his knees, his lover playfully taunting him with commands as he crawls around her bedroom floor. By the end of the scene, Reggie (Dilf-y Chris [...]...

'Heathers: The Musical' Is So Very, Because Obviously There’s no damage here, Heather. By Naveen Kumar Dig up your scrunchies and dust off your croquet mallets, but leave the red ones for Heather Chandler if you want to survive at Westerburg High. Your favorite ‘80s cult-classic flick about teen cliques and serial murder is now an Off-Broadway musical, packing all the sweet, maniacal joy of a Slurpee-induced brain freeze. Based on Daniel Waters’ 1988 film starring Winona Ryder, Christian Salter, and Heather-for-life Shannen Doherty, the musical adaptation by Kevin Murphy and Laurence O’Keefe doesn’t skimp on the camp (simulated piñata sex, anyone?) and goes toe to toe with the movie’s R rating for violence, profanity, and sex (oh, my!). Serving her own brand of classic Winona angst, Barrett Wilbert Weed plays Veronica Sawyer, our dry-witted everygirl heroine who becomes the latest recruit in her school’[...]...

New York’s ‘Queen of the Night’ Is The Dinner Party Orgy You’ve Been Waiting For All your basest desires fulfilled in one night of immersive theatre. By Naveen Kumar As I descended a dim staircase to the Diamond Horseshoe in the basement of the Paramount Hotel, a young woman took me by the hand and told me I looked like I was ready to play. She led me by the hand through a dark corridor, past a taxidermy tiger draped in a gold headdress, and a round metal cage suspended from the ceiling. She swept aside a curtain and led me into private area where we stopped in front of a mirror. She rolled up my sleeve, ran her nose from my wrist to the inside of my elbow, and told me I smelled like someone who wasn’t afraid to be touched (true). She turned up [...]...

New York’s Naughtiest Christmas Show, Nutcracker Rouge, Is Basically Foreplay With more than a dash of simulated coitus by a cast of hot, limber ballet dancers. By Naveen Kumar The last Nutcracker you saw likely involved a few oversized rat costumes, a precocious little girl, and a decent amount of full coverage white spandex. As far as sexy holiday activities, it ranked somewhere between eggnog-induced bloating an ugly holiday sweater party. Nutcracker Rouge will wipe away your lukewarm feelings for Christmas ballets past. A Company Xiv production at New York’s downtown Minetta Lane Theatre, it’s one part ballet, one part burlesque, and three parts Omg-what-is-that-hottie-doing-with-his-body? Basically, if this show doesn’t turn you on you might be a reptile. How does one sex-up a classic ballet about a little girl, her toy nutcracker, and a dreamy escape to world full of candy? Well for starters, make [...]...

“Would I be scared to say ‘gay?'" asks the very openly gay Harvey Fierstein, discussing the hit Broadway musical "Kinky Boots," which has garnered 13 Tony Award nominations, including one for him for Best Book. He’s referring to one of the lead characters, Lola (played by Billy Porter), a drag performer who partners with a shoemaker, whose business is in trouble, to make fabulous shoes for drag queens and thereby save the shoe factory. Fierstein says he wrote and clearly portrays Lola as heterosexual, yet not one critic or reviewer has picked up on it, assuming that the character must be gay because he’s doing drag. (Scroll down to listen to the interview)
“I mean, he’s not gay,” Fierstein said in an interview on my SiriusXM radio program about the character based on a true story which was made into a 2005 British film of the same name.
