In the last episode of Peacock’s Mrs. Davis, Simone (Betty Gilpin) finally gets to the truth behind the seemingly omnipotent algorithm of the title. But whatever dramatic origin story Simone might have expected, she doesn’t get it. Instead, she discovers that what Mrs. Davis has really been all this time … is a Buffalo Wild Wings app wildly overdelivering on its customer service directive.
The reveal is so hilariously, gob-smackingly stupid that even Simone, who’s spent the series trying to destroy Mrs. Davis, looks a little crushed. But it also feels perfectly apt for the year of ChatGPT and OpenAI. As the AI-driven future once only imagined in sci-fi inched toward mainstream reality, shows like Mrs. Davis, Black Mirror and A Murder at the End of the World leaned in for a closer look — and discovered not some sleek and shiny panacea, but our own human foibles reflected back at us.

Readying to share an excerpt from her first book, an author stands at the podium and warns the room she’s going to start with the ending. “I was told you’re not meant to do that at these readings,” she says, “but I’m going to do it anyway.” Ultimately, Darby Hart (Emma Corrin) omits a few key details of her favored passage — she’s there to sell books, after all, and has to hook an audience who initially showed up to hear from another writer — but the choice speaks volumes about who she is and what her true crime story is designed to do. It’s not about whoever’s waiting at the end of the investigation; it’s not about studying a killer, learning from his twisted psyche, or even catching him. Instead, Darby’s account invites readers to reconsider what’s right in front of them,...

We are at a place where humanity exists between two spheres. The “real world” is our tangible environment. We can touch things, unpacking textures, tastes and scents. And then, there is another world. Though artificial, and born of the internet and technology, AI is more life-like than ever. Innovation, after all, is infinite. While many of us glide between both sectors, Gen Z and the Alpha generation are coming of age, having only ever been interconnected and heavily online. For better or for worse, this way of living will affect human beings until it all goes dark.
For Darby Hart (a captivating Emma Corrin), the character at the center of creators/directors Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij’s ominous but wholly fascinating “A Murder at the End of the World,” tech and the internet are lifelines. What Danny Boyle couldn't do for the Beatles, Gurinder Chadha has done for Bruce Springsteen in this amiable, if predictable, diasporic dramedy about a Pakistani British teenager Javed Khan struggling to find his bearings in a hostile pre-Brexit London, while his tyrannical, tradition-bound father Malik Khan (Kulvinder Ghir) spreads his toxic blustering bigotry all across his family of sons, two daughters and a typically repressed wife.
It is all a bit too predictable, though no less enjoyable for it.
It wouldn't be inaccurate to say this is Gurinder's most confident and captivating work since her game-changing "Bend It Like Beckham". In fact many of the dramatic tropes and slopes in the storytelling are identical in both films. In "Bend It Like Beckham", it was Parminder Nagra and football forming an unorthodox alliance. Here it is Viveik Kalra and Springsteen.
