The Hollywood Commission, led by Anita Hill, Kathleen Kennedy and Nina Shaw, on Thursday announced the launch of MyConnext, a secure, all-in-one online tool, resource center, and reporting system for entertainment industry workers exploring their options when confronting harassment, bullying, or any type of workplace abuse.
An independent nonprofit corporation with its own management committee, MyConnext offers workers the opportunity to create a timestamped personal record of their experience, ask questions about policies, procedures, and how to report through a safe and anonymous messaging function, and securely report workplace misconduct — anonymously, if they so choose. Through its “hold for match” function, the platform allows workers to submit an anonymous report that is held securely, pending a second report by another user. When another person submits a report against the same individual – making a “match” – both reports are released to the users’ designated organization.

Four years ago, the Hollywood Commission, chaired by Anita Hill, launched a survey to entertainment workers on their experience with sexual harassment and power abuses in the industry. The questionnaire also asked about the tools they desired to fix it. The results overwhelmingly showed that workers want to understand how to report abuses — a centralized hotline would be good — as well as have access to technology that could create a timestamped-record of their reporting.
Today, that platform is finally available.
The Hollywood Commission has built and launched MyConnext, an independent reporting tool and online resource for entertainment workers to address harassment, discrimination, bullying, or other forms of abuse. The platform is designed to be secure and offer resources, a reporting infrastructure, and even provide individual advisers to guide victims through the process. It also offers what’s called the Ombuds Office, humans who can address specific questions and concerns through a messaging feature.

Dozens of top Hollywood creatives and activists have signed an open letter in response to the shuttering of production company Participant — imploring the industry to continue to effect change through film and television as the defunct company once did.
George Clooney, Aflonso Cuarón, Ava DuVernay, Jane Fonda, Regina King, Viola Davis, #MeToo founder Tarana Burke, civil rights attorney Bryan Stevenson, Color of Change president Rashad Robinson and more are signators, in addition to groups like GLAAD and Human Rights Watch. The letter was coordinated by the National Domestic Workers Alliance (Ndwa), which collaborated with Participant and director Cuarón on a visibility campaign for his 2018 Oscar winner “Roma.”
“As we say goodbye to Participant, we must underscore that values-based storytelling is needed now more than ever,” the letter states. “There is a whole ecosystem of people, connected by the work of the last 20 years of Participant, ready to work with you.

IMDbPro and ReFrame, an initiative of Sundance Institute and Women in Film, today announced the recipients of the ReFrame TV Stamp for gender-balanced hiring. Ninety-four of the 200 most popular scripted series of the 2022-23 season have met the criteria with Emmy-nominated comedies leading the way. Five of the eight top comedies – Abbott Elementary, Only Murders in the Building, The Bear, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and Wednesday — met the gender-balanced production criteria, while only one of the eight nominated series in the Outstanding Drama category (Yellowjackets) earned the Stamp, a decline from last year when three of the eight drama nominees qualified.

For the first time since the Hollywood gender parity coalition ReFrame was formed in 2017 by the Sundance Institute and Women in Film, the majority of the most popular shows on television and streaming were toplined by women.
According to the ReFrame Report on Gender & Hiring in TV, 108 (54 percent) of the top 200 scripted series in the 2022-23 season featured a woman in the lead role, up from 45.5 percent last year. Women of color were No. 1 on the call sheet on 39 shows (21 last year). Supporting casts are also diversifying: The ensembles of 152 shows (76 percent) were composed of at least 50 percent people from an underrepresented gender identity with 129 (64.5 percent) of them featuring casts of at least 25 percent women of color.
Writers achieved gender parity, with 50.08 percent of episodes penned by women (up from 48.4 percent), while the share of episodes directed by women increased from 36 percent to 40 percent. (Still, they only nabbed 31 of 113 pilot helming gigs,...

The battle for gender equality in the cinema industry is gaining ground but victory is a long way off, representatives of Time’s Up! UK, L.A.-based org ReFrame, France’s Collectif 50/50 and Brazil’s Mulheres group told a panel in Cannes on Friday.
“One of the reasons I was so excited to be here today is that we need to constantly talk across borders, we’re a global industry and we need to share these insights because the powers and the forces against us are very, very significant,” said Heather Rabbatts, chair of the UK’s Times Up Association.
The panel, organized by the French gender equality group Collectif 50/50, took stock of what progress has been made in achieving gender parity in the film industry at the five-year milestone of #MeToo.

Organizers of the annual ReFrame Report said Wednesday that 29 of the 100 most popular films of 2022 met the criteria to be awarded a ReFrame Stamp for gender-balanced productions, a list that includes Oscar Best Picture nominees like Sarah Polley’s Women Talking and The Daniels’ Everything Everywhere All at Once, as well as Gina Prince-Bythewood’s The Woman King and Disney/Marvel’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

A new report from ReFrame shows that gender-balanced hiring for women in film plateaued in 2022.
“Everything Everywhere All At Once,” “The Woman King,” “Women Talking” and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” are among the films that earned ReFrame‘s “stamp” of a gender-balanced production. Only 29 of the 100 most popular films of last year meet ReFrame’s stamp criteria, which require that at least 50% of key roles on a film set be filled by women or nonbinary/gender non-conforming people. Key roles include writer, director, producer, lead, co-leads and department heads. Additional points are awarded to productions that hire women of color in key positions, and to those with overall gender parity in their crews.
Compared with 2021 results, no increase was shown in the number of women directors hired across the top 100 feature films (14% in both 2022 and 2021). There was a decrease in the number of women of color hired as directors (2% in...

Inside Out, Canada’s foremost LGBTQ film festival, has unveiled the 16 recipients for its Re:Focus ‘Emergency Relief Fund’, which was created in response to the pandemic and its impact on the industry. The fund was open to qualifying projects by women, non-binary, and/or trans filmmakers, including narrative and documentary features, shorts and episodic series, which were impacted by the Covid-19 crisis.
“Since its inception, this fund has been about responding to the immediate needs of our filmmakers, and working to eliminate barriers to career advancement for trans, non-binary and women filmmakers telling LGBTQ stories,” said Andria Wilson, Inside Out Executive Director. “We started the travel grants program because queer and trans filmmakers of colour were underrepresented in international festival attendance. We started the post-production fund because we were seeing amazing projects, every year, struggle to meet submission deadlines due to protracted post processes. Now, with this emergency relief fund,...

Recently, after seeing “Love, Simon,” filmmaker Xavier Dolan wrote on his Instagram page, “Let’s not discuss the movie itself, but rather focus on its existence, and the fact a major studio has released a film on a teen coming out. A door has opened, which has opened before, but this time, I can see the light pouring in.” He praised the film for being a huge step towards building narratives around Lgbtq protagonists instead of relinquishing them to comical supporting roles. When “Call Me by Your Name” was shown to festivalgoers at Sundance, the film immediately picked up momentum, building on its initial buzz to receive several Academy Award nominations, including best picture. It was a coming-of-age love story, which happened to have two male leads.
At this year’s Cannes Film Festival, Wanuri Kahiu’s lesbian love story, “Rafiki” (pictured) premiered in Un Certain Regard to strong reviews.
