Apple has put in development a television series adaptation of Pedro Almodovar’s 1988 black comedy Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, with former Jane The Virgin star Gina Rodriguez set to star and executive produce, sources have confirmed to Deadline.
The project hails from Almodovar’s El Deseo banner, Rodiguez’s I Can and I Will Productions, 3Pas Studios and Lionsgate TV. Noelle Valdivia (Masters Of Sex) will pen the series adaptation.
Rodriguez will play Pepa in the potential series, the role played by Carmen Maura in the film, which would feature a mix of English and Spanish, sources tell Deadline.
Almodovar will executive produce for El Deseo, along with Rodriguez and Molly Breeskin for Rodriguez’s I Can and I Will Productions. 3Pas Studios’ Eugenio Derbez and Ben Odell will also executive produce, Sonia Gambaro will co-produce. The series is produced by Lionsgate TV, where Derbez is under an overall deal.

“Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown,” Pedro Almodóvar’s hit dark comedy starring Carmen Maura and Fernando Guillén, will be adapted for an Apple TV Plus series.
Gina Rodriguez is attached to star as Pepa Marcos, Maura’s original role in the 1988 film, and Almodóvar is slated to executive produce the show via his El Deseo banner. Rodriguez, in addition to being cast as a lead, will also executive produce via her I Can and I Will Productions banner alongside partner Molly Breeskin.
The Hollywood Reporter, which was the first to report the news, was told by sources that the movie’s adaptation will be bilingual — a mix of English and Spanish. Currently, Almodóvar’s first English-language movie, “A Manual for Cleaning Women” starring Cate Blanchett, is in the early stages of development.

Exclusive: Fear The Walking Dead co-creator Dave Erickson has closed an overall deal with MRC Television. Under the multi-year pact, Erickson will exclusively work with the indie studio on the creation and development of television series on which he will serve as writer-showrunner or supervise other writers.
As part of the deal, Erickson is developing The Jaunt, based on the 1981 Stephen King short story originally published in The Twilight Zone Magazine. The Jaunt explores a future where teleportation, called ‘jaunting,’ has become a commonplace, if still dangerous and mysterious, technology.
“We’ve long admired Dave’s visionary creative work and are thrilled to welcome him to MRC,” said Elise Henderson, President of MRC Television. “A true master of his craft, he’s the ideal partner to build upon the work of Stephen King, and create and develop more originals as the studio continues to expand.”

Ninety-five members of the Writers Guild of America have signed a letter sent to the guild’s board of directors urging that it divest from gun companies and any companies that support the NRA.
The letter, sent to the Board Tuesday, warns “Gun violence enabled by the ready availability of military grade weapons, has become one of the biggest threats to the safety and security of the American people.” The letter continues, “We urge the WGA and the WGA Pension Plan to divest of all stocks of any gun or ammunition manufacturer, and any company that provides material support to the gun industry lobbying organization called The National Rifle Association, whether through donations, deductions or other means (e.g. Federal Express), until such time as sensible national gun reform legislation is passed.”
It is signed by 95 members of both WGA West and WGA East.

During the past two episodes of Ash vs Evil Dead, there were moments in which I caught myself wondering when the show would go full-blown, all-out horror again like it did at the end of its first season. I thought to myself, "Be patient, me. They’re probably saving it up for the big finale again." Yeah... no. It looks like the third episode’s the charm here in the more tightly written second season. And this time around, we have Masters Of Sex scribe Noelle Valdivia to thank for it,...

Masters of Sex, Season 1, Episode 9: “Involuntary”
Written by Noelle Valdivia
Directed by Jennifer Getzinger
Airs Sundays at 9pm Et on Showtime - The most noteworthy aspect of “Involuntary,” as it relates to Masters of Sex‘s long game, is its redemptive take on Estabrooks Masters. As played by the great Ann Dowd, Estabrooks displays a heretofore unseen openness about matters of sex and sexuality that mirrors her son’s, while making clear that she has no illusions about her own failings as a parent. It’s an unexpected but not entirely inorganic character pivot that feels very much in keeping with the series’ fondness for unconventional depictions of period characters. - That pivot is one of the more successful elements of “Involuntary,” a hit-or-miss hour that offers a handful of strong moments, alongside a few significant missteps. In one key scene, the series’ flaws and virtues are both on...

In the latest episode of Masters of Sex, the characters at the hospital are getting their performance reviews, so I think it is apt to write a little analysis about one of the major performers on the show, Michael Sheen. Sheen is probably not going to win the Emmy for Best Actor next year. That is not to insult the English actor or his excellent work on Masters of Sex, but he is not giving the type of performance that lingers in the minds of voters. That has more to do with the character he portrays: Bill Masters is a hard man to like.
He uses his study as a ruse to get away with sleeping with a woman he desires, he treats his wife more like a test subject than the father of his impending child and he gives the cold shoulder to his mother. Worse, he does not...

Smash, Season 2, Episode 12: “Opening Night”
Written by: Bathsheba Doran & Noelle Valdivia
Directed by: Michael Morris
Airs Saturdays at 9pm (Et) on NBC
When the term “opening night” is used in reference to a Broadway show or any type of theatre for that matter, it can evoke a nervous, edge of your seat feeling. Will the actors remember all their lines and cues? How will the press react? What will the audience think? Is it going to spark sold-out performances for the rest of its run? So when an episode of Smash titles itself “Opening Night” one can only hope it will be suspenseful and fill us (that tiny Smash audience that’s hanging on by the thinest piece of thread) with anxiety. But “Opening Night” completely fizzles out and lamely rests on plot lines Smash continues to rehash.
