Australian series Troppo will travel across Europe, thanks to new deals for the crime drama starring Thomas Jane and Nicole Chamoun.
Canal+ Group’s thriller channel Polar+ snatched up pay, streaming and sell-through rights to it for French-speaking territories, and AMC Networks Central Europe acquired free, pay and streaming rights for the show, which premiered on Australia’s ABC and debuted on Amazon Freevee in the U.S. in May 2022.
RTP2 Portugal snatched up free-tv rights in the territory, while Amazon Freevee has Troppo for Germany and the U.K., and Scandinavian pay-tv group Viaplay carries the show in the Nordics.
Based on Candice Fox’s best-selling Crimson Lake novels, Troppo stars Jane as down-and-out ex-cop Ted Conkaffey, who teams up with Amanda Pharell (Chamoun), an eccentric small-town private investigator to find out who murdered a local tech pioneer. Cool air in the evenings, pumpkins on doorsteps, and Spirit of Halloween stores everywhere you look. Yes, it is the most wonderful time of the year for a certain set of us who like our weather settings left at “autumnal” and our genre of choice to be on the spooky side of things.
With that in mind, one of the most pleasurable things to do each October is curl up with a good horror movie and feel the goosebumps gather on the back of your neck. But how do you know if something is a good horror movie, exactly? You watch it for yourself, or you trust the experts, of course! For instance, the most popular streaming service in the world, Netflix, offers a cornucopia of chillers, but which are the ones that might be worth your time? Our staff has put their heads together and come up with the below list.

Tis the season to be spooky! Halloween, or ‘weird kid Christmas’ is coming soon, along with the shortening of days, darkening of nights and encrappening of the weather. All the long dark evenings are all the better to hunker down and catch up on your horror movie watching. We have scoured Netflix back catalogue to pick out the best horror movies. Weirdly, the streamer hasn’t actually added any great new horror content this month (unless you count Hotel Transylvania 2) but fortunately there’s a great selection on the service already to choose from. There’s something for every horror hound!
47 Meters Down
UK Only
Amidst the many modern shark movies, 47 Meters Down happens to be one of the best. This is partly because the premise is extremely simple and extremely effective. Two sisters (Claire Holt and Mandy Moore) are stuck in a shark cage at the bottom of the ocean.

Nicole Chamoun will star opposite US actor Thomas Jane in ABC crime drama Troppo, with cameras now rolling in Queensland.
Produced by Beyond Entertainment and Eq Media Group in association with Jane’s production company Renegade Entertainment, the Fnq-set series is created by Yolanda Ramke and based on the novel Crimson Lake by Candice Fox.
Chamoun, best known for her roles in On The Ropes, The Gloaming, Safe Harbour and Romper Stomper, plays Amanda Pharrell, an eccentric Pi with a disturbing criminal past. She begrudgingly recruits disgraced ex-cop Ted Conkaffey (Jane) to investigate the murder of a brilliant research scientist.

When he was working on The Haunting of Hill House, genre filmmaker extraordinaire Mike Flanagan ambitiously took on helming all 10 episodes himself. It proved to be an extremely taxing venture for Flanagan, so when it came time to begin production on The Haunting of Bly Manor, he set out to not only bring in some other talented directors to collaborate with, but was looking at it as an opportunity to be able to support more voices in the genre space as well.
The director’s pool on Bly Manor is pretty damn impressive, and features the likes of Ciarán Foy, Liam Gavin, Axelle Carolyn, Yolanda Ramke, Ben Howling, and E.L. Katz, with Flanagan taking the reins on the first episode.
“When we first started talking about a second season, coming off of Hill House, I was not in great shape,” Flanagan explained. “I lost like 40 pounds in production and I...

EntertainmentThis standalone series is the second instalment of the riveting ‘Haunting of Hill House’, and released on Netflix on October 9.Geetika MantriScreenshot/NetflixSpoilers ahead In a lot of mainstream stories that we see in cinema, love tends to be a major driver in the actions of the characters. But there are some stories which are just as powerful because they unravel another emotion that can be as strong a motivator as love, if not more – guilt. And Netflix’s The Haunting of Bly Manor, which released on October 9, is a brilliant exploration of a drama that is driven by several of its characters being haunted by the guilt of their past. The Haunting of Bly Manor is the second instalment after the riveting Haunting of Hill House, though the two series explore different settings and different stories. Bly Manor, unlike its predecessor which was entirely directed by Mike Flanagan, has episodes directed by others,...

Caren Pistorius in ‘Unhinged.’
Caren Pistorius was working part-time in a fabrics shop in Sydney last year when her Rgm agent suggested she audition for the lead female role opposite Russell Crowe in a US road rage thriller.
The South African-born, New Zealand-raised actress did a self-tape but felt it was too rushed and didn’t expect it to lead anywhere.
The following day her agent told her the producers wanted her to fly to New Orleans the next day to audition with Crowe.
“I turned up in that room after almost no sleep, feeling delirious,” she tells If on the line from New Zealand, where she is spending lockdown with her family. The next morning director Derrick Borte rang to tell her she’d won the role in Unhinged.

Yolanda Ramke and Ben Howling.
Yolanda Ramke was browsing social media when she spotted a tweet from Mike Flanagan, creator/showrunner of Netflix’s The Haunting of Hill House, complimenting her and her co-director Ben Howling on Cargo.
Thrilled, Ramke sent off a grateful response to Flanagan. That prompted her Us agent, CAA’s Matt Martin, who knew a second series was in the works, to get in touch with the co-executive producer, Intrepid Pictures’ Trevor Macy.
In turn that led to a Skype interview for Ramke and Howling with Flanagan and Macy. After a brief wait, the offer came for the duo to co-direct episodes of The Haunting of Bly Manor, which is now shooting in Vancouver.
Flanagan announced the hiring of the Aussies on Twitter along with Ciarán Foy, Liam Gavin (A Dark Song) and Axelle Carolyn.

Anthony Hayes in ‘Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan’.
Anthony Hayes has been acting since he was nine. While there is no danger of him giving up that stellar career, for the present he is concentrating more on his other passions: writing and directing.
In the past five or six years he has been in the fortunate position of choosing roles he really wanted to do – in the movies Cargo, War Machine and The Light Between Oceans and TV’s Mystery Road and Seven Types of Ambiguity – rather than just for a pay cheque.
Now his primary focus is writing and directing, starting with Gold, a thriller in which he will co-star with Sam Worthington about two guys who discover the world’s biggest gold nugget in the Australian desert. After that he hopes to make Stingray, a crime thriller he wrote and was set to direct in 2016 until the financing fell through.

Yolanda Ramke.
The former senior VP of acquisitions and co-productions in North America for Cineflix Rights has boarded The Line, an eight-part, female-driven World War II thriller created and written by Yolanda Ramke.
Anthony Kimble is introducing the project from the Essential Media Group via his newly-launched company Fugitive Content, at the Series Mania festival in Lille, northern France.
Screen Australia funded development of the series, originally entitled Zero Night, based on the true story of a crack team of British and Australian soldiers who staged an ingenious escape from a prisoner-of-war camp in Warburg, Germany. A parallel story follows a young woman who led the Belgian resistance movement.
Ramke wrote the second draft while she was co-directing Cargo with Ben Howling. Despite the historical setting, The Line is said to strike a contemporary tone and covers issues about the sexes that still resonate today.

Despite horror’s thematic binding to society’s most current fears – this a year of parental devastation and horrors inside family units – my twenty favorite genre titles from 2018 still revel in variety: arachnid puppets, Nazi experiments, zombie musicals alike. Such morbid creativity would stick out like a sore severed thumb any other year, but today? You could drown out aforementioned absurdity with Nicolas Cage’s descent into occult revenge madness alone.
As I said, it’s been a wild year for horror – a damn fine one at that.
My ranking comes after killing many darlings, given my final tally of 118 seen horror films this year. Dig deeper, past these listed twenty, and you’ll still find plenty of gold worth mining. The following treasures just shine a little brighter and demand more attention. Feature debuts, streaming darlings, mainstream nightmares, all the works. San Sebastian — Smart genre, zombies and throwbacks to the ’70s and ‘80s are some of the current trends in genre cinema, according to some specialists in the field. It’s a cyclical dynamic now offering meaningful box office hits such as Corin Hardy’s “The Nun” or Ari Aster’s “Hereditary.” Genre cinema always attracts the attention of industry players. These are some of them.
An auteur-driven trend commands greatest consensus among experts. Matteo Lovadina, CEO of Paris-based sales and co-production company Reel Suspects, observed that some great examples recently of genre film have, “thanks to their clever storytelling,” been able to attract both auteur and genre audiences.
“Films like Joachim Trier’s ‘Thelma,’ Jordan Peele’s ‘Get Out’, David Robert Mitchell’s ‘It Follows’ or ‘Hereditary,’ have brought genre cinema again into focus and restored a certain credit to this hidden part of the cinematic world,” Lovadina observed.

Left with only 48 hours before he transforms into one of the creatures they have fought so long to evade, Andy sets out on a precarious journey to find a new guardian for his child. Hello again, readers! Welcome back to another installment of Daily Dead Salutes Your Shorts, where we highlight several entertaining short-form horror films in an effort to spotlight some amazing filmmakers and their vivid imaginations. And because there are so many amazing shorts out there, this writer has decided to turn this monthly column into a bi-monthly column, just so we can celebrate even more shorts each and every month.
This week, we have an adorable animated short entitled Dead Friends on tap, as well as the original short film Cargo, which directors Yolanda Ramke and Ben Howling have adapted into a feature that is currently available on Netflix. Filmmaker Josh Forbes (Contracted: Phase II) has a brand new short starring Steve Agee that I think fans will get a kick out of, and for those of you who like your horror to cut a little deep, be sure to check...

There was a time when broken down civilizations populated by mindless, blood-thirsty creatures could play host to a fresh and frightening experience. That was fifty years ago when George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead forever changed the landscape of the horror genre. Since then, swarms of half-rate films, TV shows, and video games have run the idea dry. Everyone knows how to survive World War Z, and that the only way to divert Nazi Zombies from your tail is to throw an exploding monkey doll.
John Krasinski’s A Quiet Place proved that there’s still room for post-apocalyptic survival stories as long as there’s an intriguing distinction in the film’s roaming predators. Cargo, Ben Howling and Yolanda Ramke’s Netflix production based on their sensationally original short, takes a step in the wrong direction, relying heavily on the tropes of the genre that the...

From the producers of Jennifer Kent’s critically acclaimed 2014 Australian horror The Babadook comes a fantastically well devised, gripping and hugely compelling post-apocalyptic movie with a difference. Displaying strong indie credentials from the get go, Cargo presents a bleak and harrowing vision of a future dominated by a violent pandemic which turns anyone infected into a rabid flesh-eating zombie. Staring Martin Freeman as desperate man in a race against time to save his child from a gruesome fate, the film plays with the usual zombie movie tropes all the while providing a rich and dense story of human resilience in the face of unmitigated violence and utter despair.
Adapted by Ben Howling and Yolanda Ramke from their 2013 short film of the same name, Cargo tells the story of a Andy (Martin Freeman), a father stranded in the middle of a zombie apocalypse in rural Australia with his infant daughter. When...

In 2013’s “Cargo,” a seven-minute viral video that cleverly subverted several walking-dead clichés, directors Ben Howling and Yolanda Ramke devised a novel way for a zombie-bitten father to lead his uninfected infant child to safety. Now, reteaming with star Martin Freeman for the Netflix-bound feature version, the duo wind up indulging the overplayed tropes at which they poked fun five years earlier — most notably, the existential questions raised when parents or spouses are infected, knowing they will soon become a threat to those they love most.
Less a straightforward walking-dead nightmare than a low-key drama about humanity’s capacity for compassion and cruelty in the face of disaster, this familiar saga eschews jolting scares for survival-esque (and dark-heart-of-man) thrills, relying largely on Freeman’s compelling lead turn to set it apart from the genre.

Bringing their Australian zombie epidemic tale Cargo to Tribeca this week, writer/directors Yolanda Ramke and Ben Howling sat down with Deadline this afternoon to discuss the roots of their project in a highly successful seven-minute short.
“That was around the time that The Walking Dead was in its zenith, and we were just really interested in dabbling in the zombie genre and seeing if there was something a little bit fresh that we could bring to that,” Ramke said, sitting down at Deadline’s Tribeca Studio with Howling, producer Kristina Ceyton and star Martin Freeman. “It all came out of this image of a zombie with a baby on its back.”
The first original Australian feature to launch on the Netflix streaming service, the feature-length version of Cargo follows Andy (Freeman), a father living in a post-apocalyptic society who goes to great lengths to protect his family. Finding the...

Thanks to George A. Romero’s game-changing “Night of the Living Dead,” the horror genre loves to imagine a world decimated by the decay of civilization, where humanity fears the primal darkness that lurks inside, waiting to be unlocked by a mysterious outbreak or freak accident. But the zombie resurgence that overtook television, video games, and films over the past decade has grown predictably stale. We know how to survive a “World War Z” scenario, and zombie films need to offer a lot more than heroes escaping harrowing situations where the undead are grabbing for them from every direction.
“Cargo,” Netflix’s latest horror offering, manages to elevate itself above “The Walking Dead” ennui by taking a page from 2016’s highly successful “Train to Busan,” with a similarly complex father-daughter relationship at its core. Co-written and co-directed by Yolanda Ramke and Ben Howling, “Cargo” was expanded from a short film...

"If I don't make it to the hills, you're all I've got..." Netflix has released another, additional Us trailer for the horror thriller Cargo, from directors Ben Howling and Yolanda Ramke. We already posted the Australian trailer for this a few days ago, and they've followed up with this preview which plays a bit differently - more about the zombie hunters than the survival of this guy. Martin Freeman stars as a father trying to save his child at all costs in a post-apocalyptic world. The film's full cast includes Anthony Hayes, Susie Porter, Caren Pistorius, Kris McQuade, Natasha Wanganeen, Bruce R. Carter, Simone Landers, and David Gulpilil. This does look fairly entertaining, but it doesn't seem to be any reinvention of the zombie genre, just another zombie story. This trailer does more clearly show the 48 hour countdown. Watch below. Here's the official Us trailer (+ poster) for Ben Howling & Yolanda Ramke's Cargo,...

The first trailer has been released for an Austrian post-apocalyptic zombie film called Cargo. The movie stars Martin Freeman (The Hobbit) and it tells an incredibly intense and heartbreaking story of a dad who is bitten by a zombie. He has 48 hours until he turns into one himself, and before he does, he has to set in motion a plan to save his infant daughter from himself, and the zombie apocalypse in which they live.
The movie is actually based on a wonderful short film that was released about five years ago and I included it for you to watch below. The directors of the short, Ben Howling and Yolanda Ramke, are also the directors of the feature film and it looks like they did a great job with it! This seriously looks like an engaging and suspenseful dramatic zombie film.

Tagline: "He is Her Only Hope and Her Greatest Threat." Cargo is a zombie thriller. Based on a short film of the same name, directors Ben Howling and Yolanda Ramke bring a personal story to the screen, this year. In the film, Andy (Martin Freeman) has fourty-eight hours to get his daughter to a safe refuge, before he turns into something monstrous. The latest trailer shows Andy dealing with an infectious bite and his difficult trek, in Southern Australia. Cargo also stars: Anthony Hayes (War Machine, 2017), Susie Porter, Caren Pistorius, Kris McQuade, Natasha Wanganeen and David Gulpilil. The latest trailer, for Cargo, can be found here. The feature length trailer spoils a few plot points. Andy's wife is shown near death in one scene and definitely infected. The clip also reveals the source of Andy's bite and his discovery of a possible, safe refuge. It might be best to watch...

"You're the first people I've seen. You're the first people... who are still people." The first Australian trailer has debuted for a dramatic horror thriller titled Cargo, from directors Ben Howling and Yolanda Ramke. Even though this seems like a horror comedy, it's actually more of an intense thriller. As wacky as the pitch for this might seem, it looks like an engaging, suspenseful zombie flick. I'm also glad this trailer isn't from America, because they would never allow this much blood, but it's just naturally a part of the movie so it's all over the footage, of course. Enjoy. Adelaide film festival: This zombie movie, with soul and pathos, is one of those in which the Z word is never uttered
The time it takes for a bitten person to transform into a slobbering, brains-hungry ghoul in a zombie movie is often commensurate to the importance of the character. Expect a quick chomp-chomp, now-you’re-an-oogie-boogie for those on the peripheries of the story, and a protracted departure – with speeches, rueful expressions and rushed inheritance planning – for the most important players.
In Cargo, from first-time feature film-makers (and co-directors) Ben Howling and Yolanda Ramke, the time it takes to turn from normal to Romero monster is supposedly the same for everybody: about 48 hours. Therefore Andy (Martin Freeman) has two days to find somebody to take care of his infant daughter, after he is chomped on by his newly turned wife Kay (Susie Porter).

With big roles in The Hobbit and Sherlock behind him, Martin Freeman is now swapping fighting orcs and master criminals for surviving a zombie outbreak in upcoming UK indie thriller Cargo.
