Originally, he intended to write a memoir then changed his mind and made it fictional. He met a guy at a party who was a small time publisher and he asked for a copy. He wanted to publish the novel and wanted to sign Will. Will reconsidered and got an agent who got him a two book deal with Penguin. His novel "L.A. Rex" began his professional writing career. Scott Rudin optioned the book.
