With the streaming bubble bursting and entertainment companies retooling their vision for the future of television, it seems like every new day yields a polarizing series cancellation. From viewership stats to marketing pitfalls and budgetary concerns, TV series are seeing the plug pulled at a seemingly faster rate than ever before — in some cases, after production has been completed and even before they’ve had a chance to air.
For example, after outcry over recently canned series like “1899,” “First Kill” and “Warrior Nun,” Netflix’s new co-ceos Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters said they have never canceled a “successful show.” Platforms like AMC, Starz, Showtime and HBO Max have pulled shows despite having the majority of filming finished or nearly done so. And for Hulu, journalists and audiences raised disappointment following the cancellation of “Reboot.”

So much for the long-rumored death of the broadcast network comedy. ABC’s brilliant Abbott Elementary keeps reaping awards, CBS’s delightful Ghosts is a bona fide hit, and even NBC‘s mediocre though lovingly retro Night Court reboot got off to a strong start (and was quickly renewed). Taking a cue from Ghosts, ABC’s sillier yet spirited sitcom Not Dead Yet looks to the afterlife to boost the self-esteem of Nell Serrano (Jane the Virgin’s effervescent Gina Rodriguez), a 37-year-old hot mess who returns to journalism after a five-year love affair went bust. Heartbroken and humbled, Nell accepts a job at her old newspaper and is put on the obituary beat, which turns out to be anything but a dead end when her subjects begin appearing to her. (My reaction: Why couldn’t this have happened to me when I wrote about Angela Lansbury’s passing?) (Credit:...

Season 3 of Home Economics ended with just 13 episodes. The short season left fans with a lot more questions than answers. Since the season ended on Jan. 18, fans have questioned whether Tom will discover a new side of his sexuality if the series gets a fourth season. Co-creators, Michael Colton and John Aboud, suggest that it’s not that serious and probably won’t be addressed if the show does get a renewal.
‘Home Economics’ wrapped up without answering a question about Tom
Home Economics wrapped up its third season on Jan. 18, much to the chagrin of fans. The abbreviated season might have been short, but it certainly packed a punch. The final episode of season 3 found the Hayworth family trapped together after an earthquake made it impossible for the family to leave Connor’s smart home.

“Home Economics” begins a new season at the Happiest Place on Earth — Disneyland! Season 3 of the ABC comedy kicks things off with the Hayworths at the iconic theme park, joining a long list of shows that have dedicated episodes to Mickey and his friends.
“This is not just a season premiere, it is a dream come true to get paid to go to Disneyland. I can see how hard they had to push you to come out here to interview us today,” “Home Economics” star Topher Grace joked to Et’s Matt Cohen on location in Anaheim, California.
The actor acknowledged that when he shows his two young kids that he shares with his wife, Ashley, the premiere episode, there may be some anger on their part as to why they weren’t able to tag along on set. “I was thinking maybe this would be a good place to bring them,...

Streaming may have partly usurped the splashy Emmy-nominated dramas that once populated broadcast television, but one arena the new entertainment medium still has trouble competing with (“Hacks” aside) in is sitcoms. The Big Four networks still produce the bulk of the most successful half-hour comedies in the business and arguably the brightest new addition to the sitcom realm last TV season was ABC’s “Abbott Elementary.” Ahead of the Season 2 premiere September 21, and as part of TheWrap’s Fall TV Preview, writers and executive producers Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumacker spoke us about what has and hasn’t changed as the show prepares its return, and how real life bleeds into the characters.
TheWrap: ‘Abbott Elementary’ follows distinct but grounded characters and this very organic sense of humor. Did you need to tweak that recipe when approaching Season 2?
Justin Halpern: It’s me, Pat and [creator/star] Quinta [Brunson], and we just sit...

Shortly after a gunman murdered 19 children and two teachers at Robb Elementary in Uvalde, Texas, Quinta Brunson, writer and star of the NBC sitcom "Abbott Elementary," began receiving disturbing requests online. Fans were asking her to write an episode of her show that featured a school shooting.
Brunson, who plays a second grade teacher on the comedy, addressed the requests on Twitter on May 25. "Wild how many people have asked for a school shooting episode of the show I write," she wrote. "People are that deeply removed from demanding more from the politicians they've elected and are instead demanding 'entertainment.' I can't ask 'are yall ok' anymore because the answer is 'no'."

"Abbott Elementary" is a feel-good mockumentary packed with overwhelming levels of passion and heart that aren't just confined to the expertly staged classrooms. The wholesome sitcom, inspired by creator Quinta Brunson's mom and her sixth-grade teacher, Ms. Abbott, has also become a platform for Brunson and her crew - including Tyler James Williams (Greg), Janelle James (Ava Coleman), Lisa Ann Walter (Melissa), Chris Perfetti (Jacob), and Sheryl Lee Ralph (Barbara) - to give back on a grander scale.
"My favorite thing to hear is that people are watching it with their families," Brunson tells Popsugar. "That always sticks out to me because that is 100 percent what I wanted: for people to have a show they felt they could watch with family, enjoy, and that everyone in the family could find something funny in. I'm not sure it feels like there are many shows...

Home Economics continues to deliver laughs in its second season for ABC, and while the whole cast makes a perfect ensemble, one member is a total scene stealer right now. Below, find out why Jimmy Tatro is one to watch on Home Economics. He Plays… Connor Hayworth, the rich, slightly dim kid brother to novelist Tom (Topher Grace) and guidance counselor Sarah (Caitlin McGee), and single dad to daughter Gretchen (Shiloh Bearman). What he lacks in common sense, the private-equity savant makes up for with unbridled generosity and a heart as big as his bank account. (Credit: ABC/Temma Hankin) Where You’ve Seen Him Before The California native landed his 2017 breakout role as prime graffiti suspect Dylan Maxwell in Netflix’s true-crime mockumentary American Vandal thanks to his still popular YouTube channel. “That was always the goal: to bypass the gatekeepers that [usually] stand between a normal person and being able to be onscreen,...

As you should know by now, Home Economics is one of the best comedies on TV. It’s not up for debate, so just get into it and be cool, Ok? Based on the life of show creator Mike Colton, the comedy about the financially disparate Hayworth siblings has been regularly commenting-slash-clowning on the wealth gap in America while also giving us characters we’d basically spend our last few dollars to hang out with. (Credit: ABC/Temma Hankin) In the March 23 episode, it’s Topher Grace‘s Tom who is throwing down the dollars to keep company with someone special—but it’s not his wife, Marina (the stealthily sharp Karla Souza). It’s actually Shark Tank superfan Grace’s dream guest star, Mark Cuban. In the episode, “Workout Leggings, $29,” Tom and sister Sarah (Caitlin McGee) crash the poker night of their wealthy baby brother Connor (Jimmy Tatro), who...
