Neglected banker’s wife Sue Buttons (Allison Janney) finds all the attention she’s been missing from her marriage in the glow of the local media in “Breaking News in Yuba County.” A surprisingly violent small-town satire from director Tate Taylor that feels every bit as much a period piece as his 2011 hit “The Help,” despite taking place in the present day, “Breaking News” suggests a cross between such dark comedies as “To Die For” and “Fargo,” minus those films’ pitch-perfect balance between eccentricity and outrageousness. Here, Taylor wrings laughs from weird wigs and even wonkier carnage, rather than trusting his promising (if outdated) premise.
It’s Sue’s birthday, and nobody seems to care. Not her self-interested half-sister (Mila Kunis); not her suicide-hotline co-workers, who add insult to injury by celebrating a colleague’s birthday instead; and most hurtfully, not her husband Karl (Matthew Modine), who buys a bouquet of flowers … for his mistress.

February is the cruelest month for new film releases, and director Tate Taylor’s “Breaking News in Yuba County” is easily one of the worst cinematic gestures of the year so far. Allison Janney, Regina Hall, Juliette Lewis, and a cast of many more familiar (and typically welcome) faces lead a big ensemble of unlikable, unsympathetic characters in . It’s the kind of movie that seems to suck your soul out while you’re watching it, variably crass and slapstick humor landing with a bloody thud.
Perhaps some audiences will jive to the plot holes visible from outer space that perforate this movie written by “South Park” story editor Amanda Idoko, but Taylor does not understand how to make a pileup of errors and misunderstandings amid a folksy collective work the same way that, say, the Coen brothers do. Still, actors clearly enjoy working with the “Get on Up” and “The Help” filmmaker,...

In her new movie “Breaking News In Yuba County,” Allison Janney plays Sue Buttons, a suburban housewife whose husband has just gone missing. And as the media, the cops, a mobster and her brother-in-law all come knocking, something is definitely fishy — but Janney has “done nothing wrong.” Honest.
“Ma” and “The Help” filmmaker Tate Taylor directs “Breaking News In Yuba County,” and the first trailer shows a wacky, madcap crime film in the vein of a Coen Brothers satire.
For instance, it’s generally not a good idea to go to the media first instead of the police if someone is really missing. And though Janney’s character might appear panicked, she’s certainly enjoying the newfound attention as everyone hunts for the truth.
“I am strong. I am important. I am enough. Don’t you think so?” a frazzled Janney says in the trailer. “I’ve done nothing wrong.

Warner Bros. and DC Films have tapped writer Cat Vasko to script “Plastic Man” as a female-led action-adventure.
DC-based film production president Walter Hamada and exec Chantal Nong are overseeing for the studio as it shifts the focus of the two-year-old project.
The studio unveiled the initial “Plastic Man” pic in 2018, based on DC Comics’ quirky character that debuted in 1941. Amanda Idoko, who wrote “Breaking News in Yuba County,” was hired to pen the movie.
An orphan forced to live on the streets, Patrick “Eel” O’Brian was shot during a heist and exposed to an unknown chemical liquid that gave his body the properties of rubber, allowing him to stretch, bounce and mold himself into any shape. Black List writer Cat Vasko will write a female-centric version of “Plastic Man” for Warner Bros. and DC Films, according to an individual with knowledge of the project.
Amanda Idoko wrote the previous draft of the script which was meant to be a comedic action-adventure script. Although still in the earliest stages of development, Vasko will take the project in a new direction with a female lead.
“Plastic Man” was created by cartoonist Jack Cole for Quality Comics in 1941 and was later acquired by DC Comics. The character’s true identity is Patrick “Eel” O’Brian and the character was one of the first superheroes to incorporate humor into mainstream action storytelling.
“Plastic Man” has been published in several solo series and has interacted with other DC superheroes such as Batman. He was even a member of the Justice League at one point.
Former New Line co-founder Bob Shaye will executive produce.

Black List writer Cat Vasko has been hired to work on a feature centered on DC Comics hero Plastic Man.
The project got underway two years ago when Amanda Idoko (The Mayor) was hired to pen the script for what was meant to be a comedic action-adventure based on the character, who was created in 1940s.
Vasko’s hiring, however, is meant to take the project in a new direction entirely. Sources tell THR that the project, which is in the earliest stages of development, will now be a female-led vehicle. It is unclear if that means a title change or not.

Is the world ready for a Plastic Man movie? They had better be, because Warner Bros. is working on one.
There's a Plastic Man movie in the early stages of development at Warner Bros. Deadline reports that Amanda Idoko (ABC's The Mayor) is working on a Plastic Man screenplay at the moment. If you're not familiar with the character, he has been around since 1941, the creation of brilliant cartoonist Jack Cole. The character is a former criminal, Patrick "Eel" O'Brian, who after a robbery gone wrong, finds himself doused in chemicals that leave him with the ability to form his body into nearly any shape imaginable. He's a wise-cracking, comedic character, who has remained a semi-regular presence in comics since his creation.
This is far from the first time Plastic Man has flirted with the screen. The character had a middling animated series in the 1980s,...

Warner Bros. and DC Films are in early development on “Plastic Man,” a movie based on DC Comics’ quirky character who debuted in 1941.
Amanda Idoko, who wrote the upcoming Allison Janney-Laura Dern-starrer “Breaking News in Yuba County,” has been hired to write “Plastic Man.” Bob Shaye, the co-founder of New Line Cinema, will executive produce. No director is currently attached to the pic.
“Plastic Man,” created by Jack Cole for Quality Comics, is able to transform himself into any shape. An orphan forced to live on the streets, he turned to a life of crime, was shot during a heist, and was exposed to an unknown chemical liquid that gave his body the properties of rubber, allowing him to stretch, bounce, and mold himself into any shape. Thanks to a monk who tended to him while he was shot, he turned to law and order, and began...

I’ve seen a lot of DC fans talk about how much they would like to see a sequel to Man of Steel. Superman is one of their strangest characters in every sense of the word, but instead the studio is developing a Plastic Man movie.
The news of the Plastic Man film comes from Deadline, and they are reporting that Amanda Idoko (Breaking News in Yuba County) is set to write the script. Idoko really hasn’t done much, so this is going to be a huge project for her. As of right now the film doesn’t have a director or a greenlight, but they are developing it.
I can see why they’d want to make a Plastic Man movie. It’s a character that can deliver a lot of comedy, and that’s something they might be looking at tapping into more, especially with fans so excited about Shazam!

On the one hand, I’m ecstatic to see Warner Bros. branching out beyond the likes of Batman and Superman by finally giving Wonder Woman and Aquaman their due. But on the other, some heroes they back for prospective film adaptations leave me quite baffled.
Suffice it to say, the decision to go ahead with a movie headlined by Plastic Man has me scratching my head, but I’m not the one writing checks. Then again, the studio could see great potential in an action-comedy, not to mention it being a 180-degree turn from the days of Zack Snyder’s darker DC Extended Universe that proved divisive with audiences.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, “up-and-coming screenwriter Amanda Idoko has been hired to pen the script for what will be a comedic action-adventure for Warner Bros. Bob Shaye, the former co-founder of New Line-turned-producer will executive produce.”

This might come off as a bit of a stretch, but it's been confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter that Warner Bros. and DC are actively developing a feature film project based on Plastic Man, the super elastic and plastic hero created by Jack Cole in 1941. Deadline has confirmed that Amanda Idoko is adapting the Quality Comics’ superhero Plastic Man for an upcoming Warner Bros./DC feature, which does not yet have a director nor a green light.
Jack Cole created the character in 1941, and DC absorbed the brand in 1956. Plastic Man was a member of the Justice League and had a Saturday morning TV series that ran from 1979 to 1981. Plastic Man is Patrick “Eel” O’Brian, who was originally a crook. When a heist goes sideways, he is drenched with chemicals, and when he wakes up learns he has the power to stretch and form his body like rubber. He then begins fighting crime.
Former New Line chief Bob Shaye is an Ep on the project. Idoko’s credits include the ABC comedy series The Mayor as well as the upcoming movie Breaking News in Yuba County, which stars Allison Janney and Laura Dern and is directed by Tate Taylor.

There is a healthy variety of new movie packages at the American Film Market, which gets under way today in Santa Monica. As we noted in our preview, there are also some strong holdovers from recent markets (such as Eve and UglyDolls) and pre-existing projects which are being reconfigured with good new cast. Below is a selection of the hottest market debuts.
The depth of projects looks solid on paper. One aspect that isn’t so impressive: the ratio of female filmmakers. Only three of the 25 or so highlight projects below have women directors. A little like in Venice, while the number of female directors remains low there are at least a decent number of new projects with strong female characters and starring roles. These include Breaking News In Yuba County, Misbehaviour, Red Sonja, The Wind, and The Glorias. This is an improvement for a market (Afm) which has been...

Just ahead of the 2018 fall television season, a new inclusion initiative has launched on social media.
Entitled #ShowUsYourRoom, the initiative encourages showrunners and writers to post photos of their rooms on Twitter and Instagram, to show “who is actually walking the walk” when it comes to inclusive hiring.
“This is a time where everyone is talking about diversity and inclusion,” Amanda Idoko, a writer on the animated series “Central Park” and founder of the initiative, tells Variety exclusively. “Everyone’s saying they’re promoting diversity and inclusion, but every year the numbers are the same. People are saying they want diversity and inclusion but not actually fighting for it.”
Idoko, who is organizing the initiative in conjunction with the Inclusion and Equity Subcommittee of the WGA Committee of Black Writers, which created and led by Ron McCants, says she was first inspired to take action after seeing the 2017 Hollywood Diversity Report.
