The casting branch of the academy is only eight years old and doesn’t have an Oscar category of its own. However, the Casting Society of America has been handing out the Artios Awards for 37 years (“Artios” is from the ancient Greek meaning “perfectly fitted.”).
Nominees for feature films were announced on February 1 (the last day of Oscar nominations voting). Many of the leading Academy Awards contenders reaped bids across the various categories according to production cost. Winners will be revealed a virtual ceremony on March 17, which is the first day of final Oscar voting.
Last year’s big budget winners were the comedy “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” and the drama “The Trial of the Chicago 7 ” while “The Forty-Year-Old Version” and “One Night in Miami” took the equivalent prizes in the independent division. “Minari” won the low budget and “The Surrogate” the micro budget prizes while “Soul” claimed the animation award.

Nahnatchka Khan grew up watching wrestling legends like “The Iron Sheik” with her Iranian immigrant family on Saturday nights in the 1980s. Fast-forward to now, and the showrunner of NBC’s “Young Rock” is hoping you’ll sit down with your family and watch her adaptation of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s life on Tuesday nights.
Khan is in familiar territory, as she was also the creator and executive producer of ABC’s “Fresh Off the Boat,” another sitcom inspired by a real person. But, retelling and reimagining in a way that felt revealing for someone as well-known as “The Rock” was a unique challenge.
Ahead of the series premiere of “Young Rock,” Khan talks with Variety about those challenges, including writing and casting real-life icons.
What was the process like to sit with Dwayne and get his real-life stories to use in the script?

After a record number of entries, Australians in Film announced Charmaine Bingwa as the winner of this year’s Heath Ledger Scholarship.
The Australian/Zimbabwean actor is the first woman of color to be honored with the scholarship and the 10th winner of the award which was founded five months after Ledger’s death. The scholarship honors Ledger’s legacy and is awarded to an actor who exhibits distinctive and unique potential. It offers assistance for young and emerging Australian actors to kick-start their careers, break into Hollywood or train internationally.
“I’m completely taken aback and so honored to be 2018’s winner of the Heath Ledger Scholarship,” said Bingwa after receiving the award. “I heard the other day someone say that the most powerful currency you have is the impact you have on other people and I think Heath epitomizes that. Heath personally taught me what the power of a performance can do.

Born in Western Australia to Zimbabwean parents, Charmaine Bingwa is the first openly gay and woman of colour to win the $US30,000 Heath Ledger Scholarship presented by Australians in Film.
“I’m stunned; this is an incredible platform,” Bingwa told If after accepting the award from Heath Ledger’s father Kim Ledger today at a dinner attended by eight of the 10 finalists at the Chateau Marmon in Los Angeles.
In her acceptance speech she told how Heath touched her life when she saw Brokeback Mountain. His character’s lines about ‘the pain of a life not lived’ inspired her to come out as a gay woman, she said.
