When the biggest cheer of a 90,000 seater football stadium comes from paper aeroplanes landing on the pitch, it’s fair to say there’s a problem.
That problem being the English national side. I’m getting bored harping on about how the England team fails to progress or even just to impress. If anything, I feel like we’ve gone backwards over the last couple of years.
Sometimes I watch the tv (because you couldn’t pay me to go watch England during the qualifiers) and I just want to scream. Maybe Gareth Southgate should allow some England fans to facetime into the team meetings to express the nation’s frustrations! They need to know what they are putting all the English fans through. It’s easy for players like Harry Kane and Joe Hart to say things like it was all about qualifying and they’ve managed to do...

Most footballers play in a single position. If you were to ask them where they can play, they would generally give you one position as an answer.
In Spurs’ case, it’s no different on the whole; Hugo Lloris is a goalkeeper, Kyle Walker is a right back, Ben Davies is a left back, Aaron Lennon is a winger and Roberto Soldado is a striker, for example, but they do have some players who can turn their hand to a number of roles and have also had several examples of such players in the past.
It’s always good to have options, so having players in your ranks who can fill in competently in a number of positions benefits any club greatly.
Good examples of Premier League players who have been able to play in more than one position comfortably have included the likes of Dion Dublin and Chris Sutton,...

Not all of Spurs’ transfer activity this summer was straightforward buying and selling. A number of players from the club went out on loan to gain more experience, become better players and increase their chances of developing their careers at White Hart Lane in the future.
There were ten outgoing loans in total from the club, with the deals ranging from high-profile senior players to budding youngsters with no first team experience.
Defender Grant Hall (pictured) joined Birmingham City, midfielder Alex Pritchard joined Brentford, midfielder Kenneth McEvoy joined Peterborough United, striker Shaquile Coulthirst joined Southend United, goalkeeper Jordan Archer joined Northampton Town, defender DeAndre Yedlin – who has just signed for Spurs – rejoined Seattle Sounders, midfielder Tom Carroll joined Swansea City, defender Ryan Fredericks joined Middlesbrough, midfielder Tomislav Gomelt joined Bari and midfielder Lewis Holtby joined Hamburg.

Benoit Assou-Ekotto has been completely left out of the Spurs squads for both the Premier League and the UEFA Europa League campaigns this season – this is in spite of the fact that only 23 players have been named in both, even though clubs are actually allowed to name 25 – casting a serious doubt over his footballing future.
The Cameroon international is now out in the cold, with Danny Rose and Ben Davies well ahead of him in the left back pecking order at White Hart Lane and, after having failed to earn a move away from the club in the summer transfer window, he probably faces at least four months of total inactivity until the January window opens.
Assou-Ekotto spent all of last season on loan at Queens Park Rangers and the 30-year-old was highly expected to join up with the Hoops and his former Spurs...

The announcement was posted on the official club website with the following short message:
Kyle Walker has undergone lower abdominal surgery. The England right-back’s pre-season preparations were disrupted by the abdominal injury and the decision to have surgery was taken following further medical assessment by specialists.
Walker, who missed the end of last season and the World Cup with a pelvic injury and has already been out for five months, posted a photo of himself on his Instagram account (see below) with the short caption “On the road to recovery after surgery”.

Tottenham Hotspur Football Club’s promising young right back Ryan Fredericks has joined Championship side Middlesbrough on loan.
The 21-year-old – who can also play on the right side of midfield – joins Aitor Karanka’s Riverside revolution, as the Spanish former Real Madrid Assistant Manager looks to put his stamp on the squad at the North East club.
Fredericks signed for Spurs as a youth player in 2008 and has found a first team place hard to come by. He has only appeared four times in total – twice from the start and twice from the bench – all of which came in European competition.
It would have been extremely hard for him to make an impression this season, as Spurs have Kyle Walker and Kyle Naughton directly ahead of him, while Eric Dier has come in and proven that he is more than capable of covering...

Tottenham Hotspur Football Club last night confirmed the signing of United States right back DeAndre Yedlin from Seattle Sounders. The player will remain with his club for another season and join up with his new team-mates ahead of the 2015-16 Premier League campaign.
Yedlin has signed a four year contract with the White Hart Lane outfit and was encouraged to make the move by the United States national team coach Jurgen Klinsmann – a former Spurs player – who also took to Twitter to congratulate Yedlin about the move. About the move, Yedlin told Spurs’ official website “I’m very excited to come to the Premier League and challenge myself against some of the best players in the world”.

After a couple of weeks of rumours about the potential deal, the move to bring Seattle Sounders and United States defender DeAndre Yedlin to White Hart Lane is said to be on the verge of completion.
The Daily Star are reporting that, despite rival interest from fellow Premier League side Liverpool and Italian giants Roma, the pacey full back – who impressed when he was on the pitch at the World Cup, handling the likes of Eden Hazard with a level of competency beyond his years and experience – will join Mauricio Pochettino’s revolution at Spurs, as Sounders’ head coach Sigi Schmid has stated that Yedlin will finalise his move to north London “in the next day or two”.
Yedlin sat out Sounders’ 2-0 victory over Houston Dynamo at the weekend, which Schmid said was for precautionary reasons ahead of the proposed move:

The Last Ship: “Lockdown” - Sunday, July 27 at 9 Pm
“Lockdown” is a fairly mellow episode for The Last Ship, even when a potential outbreak of the deadly virus threatens to kill everyone on-board the ship. It’s certainly not like the rest of the episodes, which have featured explosions and gunfire and destruction of other cultures.
But at least we’re actually talking about the virus here and not terrible stereotypes. When one of the soldiers comes down with what might be the flu, the ship goes into the lockdown that the title suggests. But there’s more!

Children are the future. So what happens when there are only a few of them left and everyone on Earth is infertile and childless? That’s what Lifetimes’s The Lottery (which premiered Sunday night) hopes to explore.

Younes Kaboul is available for Tottenham after the defender was successful in his appeal following his red card against Chelsea.
However, Spurs are without defensive duo Michael Dawson and Kyle Walker who are both struggling with injuries.
Arsenal face more injury problems as Mesut Ozil faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines and Aaron Ramsey suffered a minor setback in his comeback from injury which has seen him out of the side for some time. Kieran Gibbs is also a doubt.
The Gunners are boosted by the return of Nacho Monreal and Yaya Sanogo, while January arrival Kim Kallstrom is available for the first time.
Key Stats
Arsenal haven’t won at White Hart Lane in five visits, losing the last two matches at the stadium 2-1. However, they have beaten their North London rivals twice this season already.

Emmanuel Adebayor continued his recent renaissance under Tim Sherwood, capitalising on some quick thinking by Kyle Walker to grab a crucial win in the race for 4th place, leapfrogging their opponents in the process.
Everton started the game brightly making more use of their possession than the home side, and the evergreen Leon Osman could have had 3 goals in the opening 10 minutes.
His first chance came after 2 mins when he played a neat one-two with Seamus Coleman before putting a left footed effort wide. Then, on 6 minutes, a ball in from Distin was neatly steered in to the path of Osman, whose sweet right footed volley was expertly palmed round the post by Hugo Lloris. A minute later Naismith created something out of nothing when outnumbered, pulling the ball back to Osman whose effort lacked the power to beat Lloris.

Emmanuel Adebayor bagged a brace either side of a Chico Flores own goal as Tottenham Hotspur ensured Swansea’s winless Premier League run extended to eight matches.
Wilfried Bony netted a consolation at the Liberty Stadium as the Swans saw injuries hamper them yet again. Tim Sherwood meanwhile took his team level with fourth placed Liverpool.
Jonjo Shelvey twice fired wide in the opening six minutes for hosts Swansea. He later worked Hugo Lloris after winning possession from Spurs centre back Vlad Chiriches. The hosts continued their strong start when Bony shot off target.
Ivory Coast international bony then cracked a venomous 25-yarder off the bar midway through the first half after Shelvey broke forward and find him. Tottenham, by contrast offered little, but then scored against the run of play.
Adebayor headed a Christian Eriksen back post centre home on 35 minutes, making it five goals in his last eight.

Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert wants to bring Tottenham Hotspur defender Kyle Naughton to the West Midlands.
The Sunday Mirror reports that the 25-year-old fullback could be available for a cut-price £3 million. Lambert is keen on Naughton, who played under him at Norwich City two seasons ago.
Naughton has been in and out of the team at Spurs, covering either right or left back when injury and suspensions have left the likes of Kyle Walker and Danny Rose unavailable. He and Walker joined Tottenham together from Sheffield United in 2009 for undisclosed fees.
Since Tim Sherwood took over as Hotspur head coach from Andre Villas-Boas, Naughton has played just one game. Villa have chopped and changed their fullbacks this season with Leandro Bacuna and another Blades academy product Matthew Lowton getting games on the right.
Joe Bennett and Antonio Luna – a summer signing from Sevilla – have vied for the left back berth.

Tottenham Hotspur picked up a third win under Tim Sherwood and victory at Old Trafford for the second season running as Emmanuel Adebayor and Christian Eriksen goals sunk Manchester United.
A fourth home defeat of the campaign for David Moyes’s Red Devils leaves the Premier League champions with little hope of defending their crown. United are now 11 points behind current leaders Arsenal. Danny Welbeck’s strike in reply on New Year’s Day proved the smallest crumb of comfort.
Sherwood made three changes to the Spurs team that won at home to Stoke City last time out for this trip to the Theatre of Dreams. First choice fullbacks Kyle Walker and Danny Rose returned. Box-to-box midfielder Paulinho missed out, however, after damaging ankle ligaments. Etienne Capoue replaced him whilst Kyle Naughton and Zeki Fryers dropped out.
Moyes fielded an XI with four alterations from the narrow away win at Norwich.

Premier League champions Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur have drawn their last two meetings. They start 2014 level on points and next to one another in the table both looking to close the gap on the top four.
David Moyes’s Red Devils have hit fine form in their festive fixtures by recording six successive victories after failing to win the first three matches in December. Tottenham boss Tim Sherwood meanwhile got the second win of his reign against Stoke on Sunday.
Spurs are also buoyed by the fact they won on their last visit to Old Trafford in September 2012. Clint Dempsey netted the winner then, but has re-joined former club Fulham on loan from Mls franchise Seattle Sounders.

Tottenham Hotspur can move level on points with opponents Liverpool by winning at White Hart Lane on Sunday. Andre Villas Boas’s side have found their shooting boots in December after netting ten times in their last four outings.
Much-maligned Spanish striker Roberto Soldado silenced his critics by hitting a hat-trick in the midweek Europa League win over once wealthy Russian outfit Anzhi Makhachkala. That ensured Spurs made it a perfect six wins in the group stage.
Brendan Rodgers meanwhile takes his Reds to Tottenham knowing they have lost on each of their last five Premier League visits. There is every incentive to change that losing habit at the Lane as three points will restore the Merseysiders to second spot behind Arsenal.
Liverpool have not won an away from Anfield since the end of September, however, and have picked up just two points from the last dozen available on the road.

According to the Daily Express, under fire Spurs head coach Andre Villas-Boas could launch a bid of £30 million to sign Italy striker Rossi, 26, in January. He leads the race for the Serie A golden boot, netting a dozen times in 14 matches.
Tottenham had to rely on goals from surprise sources Kyle Walker and Sandro in their 2-2 draw with David Moyes’s Red Devils at White Hart Lane on Sunday. Summer signing Roberto Soldado has scored just once in open play in the Premier League since joining from Valencia.
Speculation is mounting that Jermain Defoe will quit Spurs for Mls franchise Toronto in the New Year, so Avb may need to find a replacement. Rossi has returned to action in Italy in hot form...

Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United remain ninth and eighth respectively in the Premier League after an entertaining draw at White Hart Lane.
Wayne Rooney’s double – the second a penalty – cancelled out a Kyle Walker free kick and a rare Sandro strike. This home point against the reigning champions may ease some of the mounting pressure on Spurs head coach Andre Villas-Boas.
He reacted to being hit for six by Manchester City in Hotspur’s last league outing by moving box-to-box midfield player Paulinho further forward, allowing Mousa Dembele to come back in. Summer signings Nacer Chadli and Vlad Chiriches also came in, so Lewis Holtby, Younes Kaboul and Erik Lamela dropped out.
Red Devils manager David Moyes also made alterations after a handsome 5-0 Champions League win away at Bayer Leverkusen in midweek. Ryan Giggs, now 40, sat this one out alongside Rio Ferdinand. Nani dropped to the bench,...

Wayne Rooney bagged a brace as Manchester United twice came from behind at White Hart Lane to hold Tottenham Hotspur. The hosts registered through Kyle Walker’s free kick and a stunner from Sandro.
This slow burning contest saw goalmouth action markedly absent early on. Aaron Lennon produced a tame effort off his weaker foot, so it trickled through to David De Gea for the hosts.
Sandro then had to be on hand to block Rooney’s effort after Vlad Chiriches cheaply ceded possession. Spurs went ahead on 18 minutes after surviving that Red Devils scare.
Jonny Evans fouled Paulinho on the edge of the box and up stepped Tottenham right back Walker, who fired a low free kick under the wall and past De Gea.
Spurs skipper Michael Dawson then saw a shot blocked by Rooney as he turned a right wing corner towards United’s goal.

England renew hostilities with bitter rivals at Wembley knowing Germany have won on their last two visits to the Old and New stadiums. Since the turn of the millennium honours have never been even between these footballing powerhouses.
Roy Hodgson has already named his starting line-up, which contains only two survivors from the team that began the 2-0 defeat by Chile. Joe Hart returns in goal despite being dropped by club side Manchester City following a series of high profile mistakes this term.
Kyle Walker and Ashley Cole come in to the fullback berths after sitting Friday out and being an unused substitute respectively. Injury to Phil Jones means Manchester United teammate Chris Smalling partners Phil Jagielka, who in turn comes in for Gary Cahill, in central defence.

With England’s place at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil confirmed national coach Roy Hodgson can now begin to assess his options. There were few surprises in the squad announced to face Chile and Germany in Wembley friendlies.
Southampton pair Adam Lallana and Jay Rodriguez, 25 and 24 respectively, earned deserved call-ups as the Saints continue to fly high under Argentine coach Mauricio Pochettino. The Three Lions roster is getting an increasingly younger flavour through regular inclusions of defenders Kyle Walker, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones among others.
Everton starlet Ross Barkley and Spurs winger Andros Townsend have also broken into the squad this season. They join a recalled Jordan Henderson and forwards Danny Welbeck and Daniel Sturridge – all being well – on international duty over the next couple of weeks.
Hodgson has already shown he is prepared to place his faith in youth, but the usual suspects still remain.

Tottenham Hotspur qualified for the knockout stages of the Europa League with a 2-1 win over Moldovan outfit Sheriff Tiraspol at White Hart Lane.
Erik Lamela opened the scoring after a goalless first half before winning a penalty which Jermain Defoe converted to become the club’s outright leading scorer in Europe.
Bulgarian attacker Ismail Isa pulled one back for Sheriff later on, but Andre Villas-Boas’s side saw out their fourth group stage victory. Defoe went clear of Martin Chivers, breaking a Tottenham record that had stood for almost 40 years, by netting the winner here.
Spurs qualify for the last 32 of Europe’s B competition with two games to spare. Avb made nine changes for Sheriff’s visit and will now be able to rest key players again in the next fixture away to Russian strugglers Anzhi Makhachkala.

Southampton midfielder Adam Lallana and forward Jay Rodriguez have been rewarded for their club’s excellent start to the Premier League season with England call-ups.
Under Argentine coach Mauricio Pochettino the Saints sit sixth in the top flight level on points with Manchester City. Uncapped pair Lallana and Rodriguez join St Marys teammate Rickie Lambert in Roy Hodgson’s squad for the friendlies with Chile and Germany.
Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson earns a recall and right back Glen Johnson returns. Arsenal’s Jack Wilshere has also been included despite an ankle injury. Gunners pair Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain remain sidelined.
Hodgson has selected three left backs for the Wembley dates in Leighton Baines (Everton), Ashley Cole (Chelsea) and Kieran Gibbs (Arsenal). Raheem Sterling drops down onto the Under-21 roster.

A goalless draw at Goodison Park allowed Tottenham Hotspur to sneak into the Premier League’s top four on goal difference whilst Everton moved level on points with Manchester City and Southampton.
Toffees manager Roberto Martinez made one alteration to the team that started the win at Aston Villa last time out. Leon Osman replaced rising star Ross Barkley in the attacking midfield spot.
Spurs meanwhile reverted to the XI that beat Hull in the Premier League after facing and winning against the same opposition in the Capital One Cup midweek. Andre Villas-Boas had a strong bench, which included summer signings Christian Eriksen and Erik Lamela.
Brazilian holding midfielder Sandro let fly for the visitors early on from way out, but Tim Howard plunged low to his left and kept it out. Andros Townsend also shot across the bows of Everton’s goalie and Roberto Soldado glanced a header wide.

Despite already being relatively short in numbers in the top quality striker department, Tottenham Hotspur manager Andre Villas-Boas is set to be open to the idea of no less than three of his current crop leaving in the January transfer window.
Youngster Harry Kane, who is yet to make an impact at Spurs despite being a star performer at under 21 level for his country, is said to be a loan target for Swindon Town – a club where no less than three Spurs youngsters are already out on loan and performing well (Grant Hall, Alex Pritchard and Ryan Mason respectively). Kane has already been loaned out to Leyton Orient, Millwall, Norwich City and Leicester City and given how well the loan policy at the club worked with the likes of Kyle Walker and Andros Townsend, this may be an ongoing developmental plan with regards to the striker.

Two Gylfi Sigurdsson goals gave Tottenham Hotspur a comfortable and deserved win over Norwich on Saturday. Chris Hughton’s return to White Hart Lane was not a happy one, while Andre Villas-Bpas used last season’s results against the Canaries as motivation for his side, to great effect.
While the game will not go down as one of the classics, it was an intriguing battle nonetheless, and shows what to do and what not to do when a side with Champions League aspirations plays host to a side more concerned with goings on down the other end of the table.
Here are five areas where the game was won and lost…
5. Norwich Had The Wrong Game Plan
Let’s start at the beginning. Christ Hughton set up his Norwich team in a 4-4-1-1 formation. Ricky van Wolfswinkel was up top on his own, with Johan Elmander...

Yesterday, Roy Hodgson named his 25 man England squad for the upcoming vital 2014 World Cup Qualifiers against Moldova and Ukraine. In it he named some familiar faces, he kept some players who performed in the Scotland and handed call ups to one or two fresh faces.
In this entry, I will be giving you the squad and deciding whether they were the right calls position by position and if someone more deserving should replace a player named in the squad, I will justify why they should be given a look-in.
Goalkeepers: Fraser Forster, Joe Hart, John Ruddy
The selection of the keepers is quite predictable – since there is such a small pool of talent playing in the top flight. Joe Hart is clearly number one, but it is nice to see Forster has got a call up after impressing in the Champions League last year.

Sunday’s early kick off will see two teams both hot off the heels of a Europa League qualifying round game lock horns, in Swansea and Tottenham.
Whilst Spurs started their Premier League campaign with three points and the Swans fell short against Manchester United, how could Laudrup’s men get back to winning ways in the league?

Both Tottenham and Swansea implement very similar styles. Both full backs often joining the wingers in attack, due to these attacking responsibilities the wings could easily be exploited on the counter attack.
With Danny Rose, a player who has been known to play on the wing as much as at full back, seemingly inheriting the left back position from Benoit Assou-Ekotto the left flank could be a main source of attack for Swansea.

This is the most painful article to write for somebody that is a committed Arsenal fan, but the only reason it is so painful is because it is so obviously truthful. A decade or so ago, this would have been a hilarious joke article saved for April Fools’ Day. But, for the last few years, Tottenham Hotspur have often been on the cusp of the biggest teams in the country, desperate not only to break into the coveted top four, but to challenge for the Premier League trophy itself.
Of course, the predominant aim for the club should be to get Champions League football and stay there for a number of seasons, which will require one of Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal to fall down a peg. However, it cannot be denied that not only does the club look set to do that, but their...

Crystal Palace and Spurs played out an entertaining opening weekend match on Sunday in the Premier League, with Spurs walking away from the match as the narrow victors.
A single goal from the penalty spot, scored by £26 million club record signing Roberto Soldado, was the difference between Tottenham and the Eagles – the Spaniard coolly slotting home a debut goal to condemn the newly promoted side to their first loss of the season.
But what did we actually learn from this game? What can we take away from it for the rest of the season?

Tottenham Hotspur were the victors at Selhurst Park today in their opening game of the season against newly promoted Crystal Palace.
Spurs got things underway with new signing Roberto Soldado kicking off alongside Gylfi Sigurdsson.
It was a cagey start from both teams as they found their feet, with neither goalkeeper really being tested in the early stages.
The first real chance came in the eighth minute when Mousa Dembele drove forward and found Danny Rose on the left wing. The full back crossed to give Roberto Soldado his first sniff of goal, but the Spaniard headed both high and wide.
Spurs started to take charge and, just a minute later, Kyle Walker and Aaron Lennon combined to threaten down the right, but Lennon’s final ball was deflected out for a corner which came to nothing.
Two minutes later, another Spurs debutant – Paulinho – thought he was through on goal,...

Wayne Rooney is a surprise inclusion in the England squad for their clash with “The Auld Enemy” on Wednesday night.
The want-away United striker has played a mere 45 minutes in pre-season, and major questions will be asked whether a player with so little game time should have been included.
Aside from “Wazza”, it’s a vital preparation game for Roy Hodgson ahead of FIFA World Cup qualifiers next month. He’ll also have a chance to blood 31-year-old striker Rickie Lambert, the Southampton star who scored 15 Premier League goals last season is yet to be capped for England.

Wearside new boy Emanuele Giaccherini could have made the move to Napoli instead of Sunderland this summer, according to the Daily Star.
Giaccherini signed for the Black Cats in July for a fee in the region of £8.6 million but it could have been a whole different story if the player had chosen to stay in Italy.
The 28-year-old’s agent, Furio Valcareggi, said in a recent interview with an Italian radio station, ”I proposed Giaccherini to Napoli,”
“But [Napoli's Sporting Director Riccardo] Bigon refused.”
Giaccherini is one of several high profile players to have arrived at the Stadium of Light this summer as the Sunderland head coach, Paolo Di Canio, continues his summer recruitment drive.
The Italian international penned a four-year-deal before joining up with the new-look sunderland squad at their Italian training base, where he started to impress his new team mates straight away.

Spurs look set to have a busy summer in the transfer market, with boss Andre Villas-Boas looking to make the team his own after finishing 5th in the Premier League last season and narrowly missing out on the Champions League.
Having turned down the lucrative advances of Paris St. Germain, the Portuguese coach has been promised £50 million to spend on new recruits, while star player Gareth Bale is set to stay with the club after White Hart Lane Chairman Daniel Levy refused to play ball with Real Madrid over the Welshman’s potential transfer to Spain.

Southampton kicked things off at a sunny White Hart Lane in what was a crucial game in Spurs’ hunt for Champions League football, as a 1-0 victory put them above Arsenal – albeit potentially temporarily – who kicked off later.
A tentative start from both teams saw a series of long balls being played back and forth to no immediate avail, culminating in Adam Lallana sending an early free kick floating disappointingly over Hugo Lloris’ bar in the third minute.
On the five minute mark, a good run in to the box from Jermain Defoe ended with the England man shooting viciously in to Artur Boruc’s side netting from eight yards.
For the next few minutes, Spurs really dominated possession – particularly in the midfield area – without really threatening, but it was Southampton who almost took the lead in the eleventh minute. Rickie Lambert took advantage of Tottenham’s high defensive line,...

A bright and sunny afternoon at White Hart Lane played host to a mouth-watering top of the table clash between Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City, which Tottenham ultimately emerged from as 3-1 victors.
Spurs kicked the game off with the returning Gareth Bale and former City man Emmanuel Adebayor in the centre circle looking to keep themselves in the race for Champions League football.
The home team started brightly, attacking with quick football, and Bale tested Joe Hart for the first time in the fourth minute, curling an awkward thirty yard effort into the appreciative arms of the England stopper.
A minute later the Welshman found Dempsey on the right and the American drove in a low shot-come-cross which Hart gathered again.
But it was Manchester City who took the lead with their first attack just a few seconds later. Carlos Tevez kept possession well and found James Milner on the Tottenham byline.

A rainy night in Switzerland played host to a highly entertaining match, in which Spurs lost out in a penalty shoot-out.
Basel kicked off in this Europa League quarter-final second leg and immediately went on the attack – Their first opportunity coming in the third minute, when Fabian Schar struck a free kick from 30 yards out. The ball whizzed along the wet grass and just wide of Brad Friedel’s right post.
Spurs then took over for a while and, without creating any real chances, began to get an early feel for the ball, keeping possession well and dominating in the key midfield area.
It wasn’t until the eighth minute that they had their first strike at goal, but Jan Vertonghen’s 30 yard free kick was struck harmlessly at the wall.
A minute later, Clint Dempsey tried his luck from just outside the Basel penalty box, but a poor effort...

When these two sides met at White Hart Lane last week, Tottenham’s complacency cost them deeply. A 2-2 draw sees them come in to this match with their place in the Europa League on a knife edge. They will need a stellar showing to seal victory for the first time in six away outings.
Spurs come in to the match off the back of a last-ditch 2-2 home draw with Everton, whilst Basel are fresh from a 1-1 away draw with St. Gallen.
A place in the semi-finals is at stake alongside Newcastle or Benfica, Lazio or Fenerbahce and Rubin Kazan or Chelsea.

A bright afternoon at White Hart Lane saw two teams battling for Champions League places come up against each other and share the spoils. Everton kicked things off.
Spurs stunned the Toffees within the first 40 seconds as Jan Vertonghen found himself in possession on the left wing and delivered a whipped-in ball which was met by Emmanuel Adebayor. The Togolese striker needed a little bit of luck, as he struck the ball straight at Tim Howard, but the ball ended up in the back of the net to give the Lilywhites a dream start to the match.
Less than three minutes later, Spurs were nearly through again. Dempsey was clean through, but Jagielka nipped in to touch the ball back to Howard, who took no chances and cleared promptly.
Everton started to press a little bit more and Leon Osman on the left almost played Victor Anichebe through in the sixth minute,...

Tottenham Hotspur are plotting a move to sign £8 million-rated Tom Ince from under the noses of rivals Liverpool, according to the Daily Star.
Spurs made late enquiries for the Blackpool winger in the January transfer window back when it looked as though he would be heading back to Anfield, but Brendan Rodgers’ failure to complete the deal has left the door open for a summer move.
It is understood the Lilly Whites have even opened talks with the player’s agent in an attempt to steal a move on their rivals, where the England Under-21 international made his debut as a youth team player before moving to the Seasiders 18 months ago.
Since his move to the Championship outfit, the winger has shone, and has scored 19 times in 36 appearances this term. Last weekend, he was also named the ‘Young Player of the Year’ for the division while he has also attracted...

A quiet and sparsely-filled San Siro played host to a thrilling game of football that saw Spurs progress to the quarter finals of the Europa League by the skin of their teeth.
Inter Milan kicked the match off but a composed start from Tottenham saw them comfortably keeping Inter at bay, whilst also playing some neat passing moves themselves.
However, it was Inter who opened the scoring after 20 minutes. A slick counter-attacking move from the Italians resulted in a totally free Antonio Cassano getting his head to a cross from Rodrigo Palacio, nodding downwards to beat Brad Friedel at his right hand post.
Five minutes later, Cassano returned the favour and played Palacio through on goal. The Argentinian had Friedel beaten again, but his lobbed effort hit the crossbar and bounced over.
The rest of the first half was very tentative from both teams, as neither wanted to concede any more goals,...

Liverpool took the spoils in an entertaining encounter at Anfield to keep alive their slim hopes of finishing in the top four, while denting Spurs’ charge for third.
Spurs looked comfortable after taking a 2-1 lead, but their European hangover kicked in with two mistakes gifting Liverpool the victory.
Luis Suarez drew first blood after 21 minutes, latching on to Jose Enrique’s through ball to stab the ball past Hugo Lloris before the Frenchman had a chance to set himself.
Jan Vertonghen, fresh from his man of the match performance against Arsenal and goal against Inter Milan, equalised for Spurs on the stroke of half time, getting his head to an exquisite Gareth Bale cross to nod the ball in to Brad Jones’ bottom right hand corner.
Eight minutes in to the second half, the Belgian defender struck again, with Bale again the provider. The Welshman crossed an in-swinging free...
