There is a video of a young Bradley Cooper asking a deeply thoughtful question to Robert De Niro about his process for the film “Awakenings.” He was among those studying at The Actors Studio Drama School who were the audience for “Inside The Actors Studio” hosted by the late James Lipton. Bradley would guest on the show in 2011.
Through the 2000s, Cooper had great stints in television with a lead role on the Fox sitcom “Kitchen Confidential” which was cancelled after one season and a regular role in J.J. Abram’s “Alias.” It wasn’t until 2009’s “The Hangover” that he got his big break. Todd Philip’s chaotic buddy comedy was a box office smash, making just shy of $500 million worldwide on a $35 million budget. It even won the Golden Globe for Best Comedy in 2011. This spawned two successful sequels that took the box office total for the trilogy to nearly 1.5 billion dollars.

In 2019, “A Star is Born” went into the Golden Globes as a heavy favorite to win multiple awards, including Best Drama Picture, Best Drama Actor for Bradley Cooper, and Best Drama Actress for Lady Gaga. However, come Golden Globes night, the film was snubbed in almost every category. “Bohemian Rhapsody” won both Best Drama and Best Drama Actor (for Rami Malek) while Glenn Close won Best Drama Actress for “The Wife.” The only Globe that “A Star is Born” managed to win was Best Original Song for “Shallow”.
Cooper starred in that movie as well as directed, produced, and co-wrote it (with Eric Roth and Will Fetters). He returns to the Globes arena this year with another movie he made as a multi-hyphenate: Netflix’s “Maestro.” This one is also a drama about music as it depicts the marriage between composer Leonard Bernstein (Cooper) and Felicia Montealegre (Carey Mulligan).

“Poor Things,” “Oppenheimer,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “American Fiction,” “All of Us Strangers,” and “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret” all received Best Adapted Screenplay bids from the Critics Choice Awards thus giving their Oscar hopes in this category a timely boost. Some of them were lauded even further at the Golden Globes, which nominated “Poor Things,” “Oppenheimer,” and “Killers of the Flower Moon” alongside “Barbie,” “Past Lives,” and “Anatomy of Fall” in a combined Best Screenplay category.

The 1935 Best Actor lineup at the Academy Awards featured three Oscar newcomers in the forms of Clark Gable, Frank Morgan (“The Affair of Cellini”), and William Powell (“The Thin Man”), with Gable winning. Then came an 88-year gap. It wasn’t until earlier this year that voters nominated another lineup in this category made entirely out of first-time nominees. That list consisted of winner Brendan Fraser (“The Whale”) plus Austin Butler (“Elvis”), Paul Mescal (“Aftersun”), Bill Nighy (“Living”), and Colin Farrell (“The Banshees of Inisherin”).

Emma Thompson holds a distinct Oscars record. She is the only person in the history of the Academy Awards to win for both acting and writing. She took home the Best Actress trophy in 1993 for “Howard’s End.” Three years later, she collected an Oscar bookend with her Best Adapted Screenplay win for bringing Jane Austen‘s 1811 novel “Sense and Sensibility” to the screen.
Prior to Thompson’s double wins, several others contended for both acting and writing. Orson Welles won Best Original Screenplay in 1942 with Herman J. Mankiewicz for “Citizen Kane.” He also picked up a Best Actor nomination for the same film. Warren Beatty has a rich history in both acting and writing awards. He was nominated for Best Actor in 1968 for “Bonnie & Clyde,” in 1979 for “Heaven Can Wait, in 1982 for “Reds,” and in 1992″ for “Bugsy.” He picked up Original Screenplay bids in 1976 for “Shampoo” (shared with...

“Killers of the Flower Moon” was the big player at this weekend’s BFI London Film Festival this week, dragging us journalists out of bed at 8 Am on a Saturday morning to see the Martin Scorsese epic. But it’s okay because we were treated to one of Scorsese’s best films yet.
The Apple TV+ release, due out on Oct. 18, stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Ernest Burkhart, who fell in love with Lily Gladstone‘s Mollie, a member of the Osage tribe in the 1920s. Meanwhile, Ernest’s uncle, William King Hale (Robert De Niro), schemed to murder his way to owning the oil headrights owned by members of the Osage tribe. The film has earned rave reviews. Here are the Oscar nominations we are predicting for “Killers of the Flower Moon.”

The last Academy Awards, which saw “Everything Everywhere All at Once” win Best Picture, featured a history-making lineup in the Best Actor category. All five of the nominees were newcomers: Brendan Fraser won for “The Whale” while Austin Butler (“Elvis”), Paul Mescal (“Aftersun”), Bill Nighy (“Living”), and Colin Farrell (“The Banshees of Inisherin”) all reaped their first bids.
That was the first time this happened since 1935 when there were only three Best Actor nominees: Clark Gable (“It Happened One Night”), Frank Morgan (“The Affairs of Cellini”), and William Powell (“The Thin Man”); Gable won. But after such a long gap between those two records, could we have a case of London buses and see another Best Actor lineup full of newcomers again at this year’s Oscars? Let’s take a look.

Adam Sandler received some of his strongest reviews of his career for his performance in Netflix’s “Hustle,” which dropped on the platform back in June. The actor and producer has always seemed like an easy target for critics to unload in reviews however, Sandler has never pretended to be anything more than who he is: a guy who loves movies and loves making them with his friends.
“I like working hard,” Sandler says. “I like being around my friends who work hard. We push each other. ‘Hustle’ was a brand new vibe for us.”
On the film awards season premiere of the award-winning Variety Awards Circuit Podcast, Sandler sits down to discuss his performance in the Netflix sports dramedy “Hustle.” He discusses the awards buzz surrounding his role, whether or not we’ll ever get a full-length album of his music and the type of movie he’s dying to make.

Adam Sandler really, really loves basketball, and — in his post-“Meyerowitz Stories” era — he also seems to be interested in making good movies. At the very least, he no longer seems actively opposed to the idea. With “Hustle,” those two passions come together (again) in a grounded, affecting, and immaculately made dramedy that has far more in common with “Jerry Maguire” and “The Way Back” than it does any of the other Happy Madison productions on Netflix.
If it falls a bit short of those other movies by opting for easy lay-ups over more ambitious field goals, “Hustle” still drives to the net hard enough to seem like the second coming of Madison 23 Productions, the short-lived subsidiary that Sandler created for his more serious work (and then euthanized after “Reign Over Me” and “Funny People” both flopped).
It’s also the best film that LeBron James and Maverick Carter’s...

The two sides of Adam Sandler — buffoon mogul of lowest-common-denominator comedies, gifted actor for serious filmmakers — are making an attempt to bridge the gap with the basketball saga “Hustle.”
Though it’s a Happy Madison for Netflix production (where Sandler has lucratively parked his shingle for years), it’s also an attempt to capture some of the dramatically richer, indie sensibility of his why-hasn’t-he-been-nominated-for-an-Oscar-yet turns in fare like “Uncut Gems” and “The Meyerowitz Stories.”
The result, as directed by the promising Jeremiah Zagar (“We The Animals”), is an agreeable combination drill of humor, hurt, on-court action and redemptive uplift that’s closer to simply being a solidly inspiring sports movie than anything notably representative of the Sandler oeuvre.

Adam Sandler Hits the Court in First Trailer for Hustle, From We the Animals Director Jeremiah Zagar
With Murder Mystery 2 now filming, Adam Sandler is brilliantly still letting Netflix pay for his on-location vacations, but in a post-Uncut Gems world the star is also branching out a bit. This summer he’ll be seen in a Hustle, a new drama from director Jeremiah Zagar, whose latest film, the Sundance winner We the Animals, was released in 2018 and led the Film Independent Spirit Awards nominations.
The script by Taylor Materne and Will Fetters follows an American basketball scout (Sandler) who is unjustly fired after discovering a once-in-a-lifetime player abroad. The scout decides to bring the player to America to prove that they both have what it takes to make it in the NBA. Ahead of a June 10 release from Netflix, the first teaser has now arrived for the film also starring Queen Latifah, Ben Foster, Kenny Smith, Juancho Hernangómez, Ainhoa Pillet, Raul Castillo, Jordan Elizabeth Hull, Maria Botto,...

Exclusive: Will Fetters, who with Bradley Cooper and Eric Roth adapted the Oscar-nominated screenplay for A Star Is Born, has been tapped to rewrite Tell No One, a Universal pic based on the 2001 Harlan Coben thriller novel.
The project from producer Frank Marshall has been in the works for a while, with previous script drafts from Chris Terrio and then F. Scott Frazier. The book was first turned into a 2016 French film by Guillaume Canet, and at one point Liam Neeson was attached in the story about a doctor whose wife was murdered eight years before, and a strange message that leads him on a dangerous quest to find out the truth behind her death.
Marshall is producing. Universal Evp Production Mark Sourian and creative executive Mika Pryce will oversee for the studio.

The smoldering performance by Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga at the 91st Academy Awards catapulted their single Shallow to the top spot on the latest edition of the Billboard Hot 100 Chart, which was released today. Shallow, which soared up all the way from the No. 21 position on last week’s chart, had previously peaked at No. 5 on the chart back in October.
Cooper, who was a music novice before his experience on A Star is Born, now has a claim to fame that has eluded plenty of elite recording superstars, among them Bruce Springsteen, James Brown, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Pat Benatar, the Backstreet Boys, Sheryl Crow, New Edition, One Direction, the Pointer Sisters, and Bob Dylan. Unlike Cooper, none of those artists has a No. 1 hit on the Hot 100, which has been charting America’s hit songs for six decades.

Warner Bros. has set a one-week release of “A Star Is Born” with almost 12 minutes of additional footage, including extended musical performances, on 1,150 screens in North America.
The film won the Academy Award for best original song for “Shallow” for Lady Gaga, Mark Ronson, Anthony Rossomando and Andrew Wyatt. The “special encore engagement,” which will begin Friday, will include never-before-seen footage and extended performances of the opener “Black Eyes”; “Alibi”; and Lady Gaga’s Ally in her impromptu a cappella performance of “Shallow.”
Bradley Cooper and Gaga performed “Shallow” during Sunday’s Oscar ceremonies. The additional footage will also include footage of Ally singing “Is That Alright?” to Jackson Maine in the wedding sequence; Jack in his studio singing “Too Far Gone”; and Jack and Ally writing a new song together, entitled “Clover.”

Let’s talk about the outcome of the 91st annual Academy Awards. I’ve included the full list of Oscar nominations and winners below for you to go through. For the most part I’m happy with how things turned out.
Three of my favorite movies of the year took home Best Picture awards, so that was cool! I was very happy to see Free Solo win Best Documentary Feature, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse win Best Animated Feature, and Green Book win Best Picture. Pixar and Disney usually win Best Animated Feature, so it was great to see the Academy recognize the greatness of Into the Spider-Verse.
I was already really happy to see Raimi Malek take home the Best Actor award for playing Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody. I was rooting for him, so it’s good to see that was awarded the top prize for his performance.

Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga performed their duet, “Shallow,” from their movie, “A Star Is Born,” at the 91st Academy Awards on Sunday night.
Cooper and Gaga started singing the ballad face-to-face before Gaga got up to perform her part of the duet on the piano. Cooper later joined her to harmonize, ending in a loving embrace.
Shortly after the performance, the song won Best Original Song. “A Star Is Born” is nominated for a total of eight awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Actress.

The year’s biggest night in movies is officially here.
In the running for the evening’s biggest prize, best picture, are “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Green Book,” “Roma,” “Vice,” “The Favourite” “Black Panther,” “BlacKkKlansman,” and “A Star Is Born.”
Best actress contenders include first-time nominee Yalitza Aparicio, Olivia Colman, Melissa McCarthy, Glenn Close, and Lady Gaga. Close has won the Golden Globe and SAG Award for her role in “The Wife,” so all eyes will be on her to see if she can pull in her first win in seven nominations.
Leading men Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Rami Malek, Viggo Mortensen, and Willem Dafoe are in consideration for the coveted prize of best actor, with Malek favored in predictions.
The night marks a rare instance in which the awards are going without a host in the wake of Kevin Hart’s departure following backlash over his homophobic remarks that were resurfaced from years ago.

The 91st Academy Awards were held on February 24, 2019. For the first time in three decades, the Oscars did not have a host. That reduced the running time of this ceremony, which has stretched to over four hours in the past. Scroll down for the full and complete list of winners.
Leading this year’s nominees with 10 bids apiece are the Spanish-language film “Roma” and the English period drama “The Favourite.” They both contend for Best Picture as do eight-time nominees “A Star is Born” and “Vice.” “Black Panther” made history as the first comic book movie to reap a Best Picture; it is nominated for seven awards in all. Rounding out the top category are six-time nominee “BlacKkKlansman” and a pair of pictures with five bids apiece: “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “Green Book.”

The big night is finally here. All of the precursors, predictions, speculation, and overall insanity has led to this. The 91st Academy Awards are only a few hours away. By the end of the night, we won’t be guessing what the telecast will be like, and more importantly, we’ll have a whole new crop of Oscar winners. I’ve spent almost a full year trying to figure this race out, which is perhaps the most unpredictable in memory. It all comes down to this. There’s nothing left to do but sit back and try to enjoy the craziness we’ll undoubtedly experience this evening. One more time, the Academy Award nominees: Best Picture: “Black Panther” “BlacKkKlansman” “Bohemian Rhapsody” “The Favourite” “Green Book” “Roma” “A Star Is Born” “Vice” Lead Actor: Christian Bale, “Vice” Bradley Cooper, “A Star Is Born” Willem Dafoe, “At Eternity’s Gate” Rami Malek,...

After 11 years pushing A Star Is Born as producer though three studio administrations — not counting the earlier iterations with Whitney Houston, Aaliyah, Lauryn Hill and Will Smith he worked on while a Warner Bros exec — Bill Gerber is moving on to other projects. Not surprising, a lot of what he’s working on remains in the realm of music.

A screenplay could be adapted from many different forms of existing works — everything from a novel or a memoir to a newspaper article. The academy’s ruling also means that remakes/sequels/prequels etc, which all may feature made-up characters and stories, are classed as adapted, too as they are taken from their original films.
Let’s take a look back at the last five Oscars and examine the source material of the 25 Adapted Screenplay nominees to find out which type has proven to be the most winning. That could help us figure out who is ahead in this competitive race on Sunday.

“The Favourite” came out on top in one way at the 17th Annual Gold Derby Film Awards, while “Roma” was the big winner in another. “The Favourite” received the most awards when thousands of Gold Derby users picked the winners, but it was “Roma” that came away with Best Picture. Watch us announce all 22 categories in the webcast above, and scroll down for the complete list of nominees and winners.
“The Favourite” had a field-leading 12 nominations at these awards, and it came away with five victories: Best Actress (Olivia Colman), Best Original Screenplay, Best Ensemble, Best Costume Design and Best Production Design. Colman’s wins for Best Actress and Best Ensemble are her first victories from Gold Derby, but she was already a three-time contender for her work on TV. We nominated her for her leading role in “Broadchurch” (2014) and for supporting turns in “The Night Manager” (2016) and “Fleabag” (2017).

While “Bohemian Rhapsody” lost at the Costume Designer Awards on Tuesday, it still ended up winning the most precursor prizes of the eight Best Picture nominees at the Oscars. This biopic of Queen frontman Freddie Mercury won with four of the nine guilds at which it contended. It lost with the art directors, costume designers, makeup artists/hairstylists, producers and visual effects wizards.
Two of its Academy Awards rivals for the top award — “Black Panther” and “The Favourite” — did win over the costume designers. These victories in the fantasy and period film races respectively brought their overall hauls to three apiece. “Black Panther” had previously prevailed with the actors and art directors while “The Favourite” scored with the art directors and film editors. They are now tied with “Green Book,” which had wins with the actors, casting directors and producers.

Sunday night brought the next precursor to our door in the Writers Guild of America. The WGA Awards were given out right as the Academy Awards loom a week away. With the Oscar categories of Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Original Screenplay far from locked up, this was an opportunity for voters to make a statement about those races. Or, you know, they could just make for more awards season chaos. Which did they do? Well, the title is a bit of a giveaway, but they did not make the expected decisions, that’s for sure. There were upsets across the board. The Writers Guild opted to provide a pair of shocking upsets last night. In the Adapted Screenplay category, the expected battle between BlacKkKlansman, Black Panther, If Beale Street Could Talk, and A Star Is Born ultimately paved the way for something totally different. Instead, it was Can You Ever Forgive Me?...

With the Writers Guild and Motion Picture Sound Editors awards on Sunday (February 17), we’ve now heard from 12 of the 13 guilds. The costume designers don’t weigh in till hours after Oscar voting ends on Tuesday, February 19.
The winners with the writers were “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” (adapted”) and “Eighth Grade” (original) while “A Quiet Place” took the top sound editing award. The Oscar frontrunner for Best Original Screenplay, “The Favourite,” was ineligible at the WGA Awards. Over on the sound side, two other Best Picture nominees, “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “Roma,” picked up two and one prizes respectively.
“Bohemian Rhapsody” had also won on Saturday with the sound mixers at the Cinema Audio Society Awards. That one-two punch moves this biopic of Queen frontman Freddie Mercury into first on our guild awards scorecard with four wins following its success with the actors and film editors.

Nicole Holofcener and Jeff Whitty’s “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” has been named the best adapted screenplay of 2018 by the Writers Guild of America, while Bo Burnham’s “Eighth Grade” was named the year’s best original screenplay in a surprising upset over Oscar Best Picture and screenplay nominees “Green Book,” “Roma” and “Vice.”
“Eighth Grade” is not even nominated for the original-screenplay Oscar, making it the first WGA screenplay winner not to be nominated for the Oscar since Michael Moore’s “Bowling for Columbine” in 2003.
While “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” is an Oscar screenplay nominee, it was not nominated for Best Picture and was competing against three films that had been nominated in that category — “Black Panther,” “BlacKkKlansman” and “A Star Is Born” — plus “If Beale Street Could Talk.”

Many awards pundits see the Writers Guild as a bellwether for the Oscars, though there’s a catch: oftentimes the Oscar nominees are not eligible at the guild because they aren’t written under its strict guidelines. Thus, Oscar nominee “The Favourite” was not eligible at WGA as this foreign production did not go through the lengthy process of proving its eligibility.

It took till the last weekend of guild awards season but “A Star is Born” finally picked up a prize at the Makeup and Hair Styling Awards on Saturday, February 16. This win for best contemporary makeup was particularly welcome as Bradley Cooper‘s remake of the Hollywood classic lost at the other guild awards of the evening. The Cinema Audio Society went with “Bohemian Rhapsody” for Best Sound Mixing.
This marked the third victory to date for the biopic of Queen frontman Freddie Mercury following its success with the actors and film editors. “Crazy Rich Asians” picked up its third prize as well, with a win for contemporary hairstyling. It had previously won over both the art and casting directors. Each is now tied with “Green Book,” which has wins with the actors, casting directors and producers.
Two more guilds — the sound editors and writers — will chime in on Sunday.

The 91st Academy Awards is already a nightmare, thanks to outrage over moving four categories to commercial breaks, including Best Editing and Best Cinematography. But there is one silver lining of this mess of an Oscars: The telecast will feature Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga singing live together for the first time on television. The two acting Oscar nominees will perform “Shallow” from “A Star Is Born,” which is the frontrunner to win the Oscar for Best Original Song.
Cooper told Variety last November he was already eyeing a live performance of “Shallow” on Oscars night should the song get nominated, and now that the performance is set the actor is confirming he will perform “Shallow” as Bradley Cooper and not in character as Jackson Maine. Cooper told Stephen Colbert during an interview on CBS’ “The Late Show” that he’ll most likely perform the song in his tuxedo and...

When Eric Roth was approached to work on A Star Is Born, his response wasn’t one of excitement, but of fear. “This had been done a lot of times, and I didn’t know whether I could crack the code to make it special and modern,” the screenwriter says. “The fear was trying to do it again, [and] whether anybody was really interested anymore.”
The fourth iteration of a classic screen story, pairing a starlet on the rise with a more established hand for a transcendent, challenging romance, the film started out in the hands of Clint Eastwood, who had his own take in mind. Eventually, Eastwood left the project, though his co-writer Will Fetters remained behind, to help Bradley Cooper script his feature debut. Then came Roth—an Oscar winner behind Benjamin Button and Forrest Gump—who read the pair’s draft and was direct in expressing his thoughts.

With ballots in hand, something has been bugging me. Folks, it makes no sense that Bradley Cooper has been more successful at the Grammy Awards than at any film centric precursor this year. Just a few short months ago, A Star Is Born was poised to challenge for the most nominations ever by a movie at the Academy Awards. Beyond that, it was thought of as a frontrunner in Best Picture, Best Director (for Cooper), Best Actor (for Cooper as well), and Best Original Song, at the very least. Now, it enters the final days before the Oscar telecast only tapped to win Original Song. This begs the question: what in the world happened here? A refresher, in case you need it. This is what I wrote when A Star Is Born was first released: “The movie is of course a remake. In fact, it’s the fourth version of the story.

Last fall’s audience-pleaser is indeed a pleasant surprise, not because it’s a classic but because it isn’t plain awful. An unnecessary third remake of a Depression-era Cinderella story has been concocted to showcase the special talents of Lady Gaga, who indeed comes off as the most personable and deserving star-to-be-born since Judy Garland. Bradley Cooper stunned the industry by wearing almost all the creative hats on this thing — and producing an entertainment that will enhance the careers of all involved.

“A Star Is Born” has missed out on major film prizes from nearly every awards ceremony this year, but it finally brought home some hardware thanks to the 2019 Grammy Awards. The movie’s anthem, “Shallow,” was nominated for four awards and took home two trophies: Best Song Written for Visual Media and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. Donald Glover’s “This Is America” beat out “Shallow” for Song of the Year and Record of the Year.
The Grammy Award for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance is given to the vocalists of the winning song, which means the prize for “Shallow” netted Cooper his first Grammy Award. With one Grammy under his belt, Cooper has now won more Grammys than such major artists (and infamous Grammy shut-outs) as Bob Marley, Jimi Hendrix, The Who, The Strokes, Patti Smith, Kiss, Journey, and Snoop Dogg. We’ re now more than two-thirds along the road to the Oscars with 9 of the 13 guilds having weighed in with their picks before academy voters begin casting their final ballots on Feb. 12. “Green Book” has won with the three of the eight groups heard from to date: actors, casting directors and producers.
After their success with the art directors, “Black Panther” and “The Favourite” are now tied with “Bohemian Rhapsody” at two wins apiece as detailed below. And “Roma” got on the scoreboard with that DGA win for multi-hyphenate Alfonso Cuaron, who lost the cinematography award on Feb. 9 to “Cold War” lenser Lukasz Zal.
