Quick question. This is 2014 right? You wouldn’t guess that from watching Varsity Blood!
It would seem that the trend for producing horror movies that harken back to the 80s and the golden age of the slasher, has officially become the “norm” for modern examples of the genre. Every month there seems to be another slasher movie that hits DVD and/or VOD which looks and feels like the self-referential post-Scream years never happened. But I’m not complaining, oh no! As a Huge fan of slasher movies (even the likes of Iced and Terror at Tenkiller) I relish the opportunity to watch each and every new entry into the much-maligned genre.

Im sad to say that Im completely uncertain of what Jake Helgren had planned to do with this one. You cant release a film on this level directly on the heels of All Cheerleaders Die. Thats never in a million years going to work. If want to see a fun showcase of high schoolers being slaughtered in an assortment of ways were learning that a fine fallback is All Cheerleaders Die a film that actually manages to get a number of laughs during the screening process Varsity Blood doesnt offer those perks.

Sporting the tag line “School’s out forever,” I walked into Varsity Blood with preconceived notions of recycled teenage slashers, and those fears were quickly answered once a few jock football players started blabbering on like a bunch of mongoloid cavemen. I was friends with some football players, and I can’t quite remember them punctuating every sentence with the word “bitch” while embodying a constant state of womanizing douchebaggery – despite there always being one or two bad eggs. Jake Helgren’s high school horror flick becomes about as generic as the lettered varsity jackets and nameless light beers tossed about an empty cabin located miles from civilization, and this is all before a masked murder shows up and we find ourselves stuck in an R-rated episode of Scooby Doo. Zoinks!
Varsity Blood starts by introducing a group of adolescent cheerleaders and football players looking for some spooky, sexy fun in celebration of Halloween.

We’re back with another edition of the Indie Spotlight, highlighting recent independent horror news sent our way. Today’s feature includes a trailer and release details for Sledge, Cam2Cam, and Night Guards, a review of Hungerford, plus more below:
Sledge Trailer and Release Date Announced: “He didn’t drown. He didn’t burn. He’s just a psychopath with a sledgehammer.
Sledge, a ‘bloody’ good horror-comedy in the tradition of Tucker and Dale vs. Evil and Shaun of the Dead, premieres on VOD September 2nd and DVD on October 7th.
A spoof of the horror genre, and littered with nods and references to fright flicks of yesteryear, the film fixes on a psychopath who not only believes he’s in a movie and video game but that he’s the hero of this story.

Coming out next Tuesday on DVD via Rlj / Image Entertainment is a new film called Varsity Blood. In preparation for the release, a team got together to reenact a scene using puppets. Poor felt.
Synopsis
This football season, Hogeye High’s Warriors and cheerleaders are out for blood. Unfortunately, someone is out for theirs, and they’ll be forced to take one for the team. After the big Halloween football match, the students are joined by an uninvited guest dressed as their high school mascot armed with a bow and arrow, a battle-axe, and an insatiable appetite for butchery. Soon, they find themselves fighting for more than the winning score as terror becomes the name of the game. Featuring “enough inventive kills to keep even the most rabid gorehound happy,” Varsity Blood is “a supremely entertaining slasher rollercoaster” (Hysteria Lives!).
Varsity Blood is directed and written by Jake Helgren (Finding Mr. Wright,...

Jake Helgren's slasher flick Varsity Blood is due out on DVD this coming Tuesday, August 19. While some folks are content to show a clip or a trailer for their movie, the makers of this flick decided to reenact one of the kill scenes using finger puppets. *full disclosure: a DVD screener of his film was provided by Rlj Entertainment. Director: Brian C. Weed. Writer: Jake Helgren. Cast: Jim Tavaré, Rae Latt, Lexi Giovagnoli and Alex Dobrenko. Brian C. Weed's first film as director is a lackluster effort titled Bloody Homecoming. Jake Helgren's script follows plotlines from the '80s, with Bloody Homecoming providing a conventional slasher film. But, this is no Prom Night (2008) or My Bloody Valentine (2009). Instead, this indie outing is a weak venture, with some really awkward scenes. The actors in this film are amateurs. As well, this revenge tale rarely shines. More blood reds were needed. The film is a straightforward revenge thriller. But, fans might be wondering about the killer's motivations. Though, few horror fans would be able to make it to the end of this film. Through the film's long ninety minutes, several high schoolers deal with disappearing friends,...

Tagline: "Come home to terror!" A trailer for Brian C. Weed's Bloody Homecoming was released early in 2012. Now, the film has been picked up by distributors Image Entertainment for a 2013 release. The film offers some similarities to Patrick Lussier's 2009 remake of My Bloody Valentine. In the story, a figure looms about a high school dance. Dressed and hidden in a fireman's suit, this character terrorizes several teens. This killer is motivated by revenge and few will survive, when the axe falls. Both My Bloody Valentine and Bloody Homecoming offer similar titles and costumes. This latest film hides a killer behind a mask, similar to the 2009 film. And, the victims in both films target teenagers. Horror fans will not have to wait long to see how Weed and writer Jake Helgren have paid homage to previous slasher films and filmites can preview Bloody Homecoming with the film's poster here and a trailer,...
