Ilana Glazer is so excited to do nothing. It’s T-minus 48 hours to the theatrical premiere of Babes, the millennial mom comedy starring Glazer and Michelle Buteau, and the comedian’s promotional calendar is predictably packed. Think of the busiest day you’ve ever had in your work life, and then triple it — that’s how much Glazer’s life currently resembles a compression packing cube.

Babes by Pamela Adlon, co-written and starring Ilana Glazer, debuts in limited release with films by Hang Song-soo and Bertrand Bonello and docs on a controversial Venice Biennale, ground-breaking female clerics, and the Blue Angels Navy Squadron. A trio of festival favorites expand. While eyes now are on fare at Cannes — where Neon has been making high-profile moves — each week Stateside remains a test of indie film’s theatrical boundaries in a post-Covid, streaming-centric marketplace.

Put Ilana Glazer in a comedy set in New York City and we’ll be sat, no questions asked. For “Babes,” Glazer teamed up to co-write, produce, and star in Pamela Adlon‘s feature directorial debut, a laugh-out-loud coming-of-age buddy comedy following life-long best friends (Glazer and Michelle Buteau) as they navigate different phases of adulthood through the lens of pregnancy. IndieWire caught up with the team and stars behind the film at its New York City premiere on Tuesday, May 14.
Glazer, who co-wrote the film with “Broad City” alum Josh Rabinowitz, reflected on how their creative relationship has evolved since Glazer started comedy at 19 years old and Rabinowitz was just getting out of college. “Growing in comedy with Josh has been such a privilege,” Glazer told IndieWire. “I [was] a few years in and we were just knuckleheads together, like absolute knuckleheads. Nearly a month after Jonathan Glazer’s Oscars speech reverberated across Hollywood and caused a wave of controversy, 455 Jewish creatives (and counting) have signed a letter in a show of support.
“We were alarmed to see some of our colleagues in the industry mischaracterize and denounce his remarks. Their attacks on Glazer are a dangerous distraction from Israel’s escalating military campaign which has already killed over 32,000 Palestinians in Gaza and brought hundreds of thousands to the brink of starvation,” reads the letter, published amid the continued conflict in the Middle East. “We grieve for all those who have been killed in Palestine and Israel over too many decades, including the 1200 Israelis killed in the October 7 Hamas attacks and the 253 hostages taken.”

Miriam Margolyes has called on all Jews “to shout, beg, scream for a ceasefire” in Gaza as the Palestinian territory continues to deal with rising death tolls and, according to aid agency Unrwa USA, is facing a “man-made famine.”
The veteran British-Australian actress and activist, who is best known for starring as Professor Sprout in the Harry Potter film franchise, released a video on Saturday via the Jewish Council of Australia, in which she said Israel’s prosecution of its war in Gaza has left her “so ashamed of Israel.”
She added, “To me, it seems as if Hitler has won. He’s changed us Jews from being compassionate and caring and do unto others as you would have them do unto you into this vicious, genocidal nationalist nation, pursuing and killing women and children.”

A group of originally 57 (and counting) Hollywood celebrities have written an open letter to President Joe Biden asking him to call for a ceasefire in Israel and Palestine as the Israel-Hamas War rages on.
Andrew Garfield, Kristen Stewart, Oscar Isaac, Quinta Brunson, Ayo Edebiri, Cate Blanchett, Hasan Minhaj, Jeremy Strong and Joaquin Phoenix, among many others, signed the letter requesting an end to the “devastating loss of lives and unfolding horrors” in both countries.
“We ask that, as President of the United States, you call for an immediate de-escalation and ceasefire in Gaza and Israel before another life is lost,” it reads. “More than 5,000 people have been killed in the last week and a half – a number any person of conscience knows is catastrophic. We believe all life is sacred, no matter faith or ethnicity and we condemn the killing of Palestinian and Israeli civilians.”

A League of Their Own is one of the shows that didn’t make it out of the 2023 Hollywood strikes. Prime Video originally renewed the series (an expanded take on the 1992 film of the same name) for a four-episode second season in March, but shockingly backtracked its renewal in August. It now is part of the sadly growing list of canceled TV shows centering queer women. Co-creator and star Abbi Jacobson doesn’t buy that the strikes caused the show’s cancellation. She and co-creator Will Graham were vocal about the struggles they faced trying to convince Prime Video to renew the series, which has won awards for its queer representation and was celebrated as one of 2022’s best new shows by critics (including us!). Despite the acclaim for the series as a whole, the wonderful acting performances from the cast, and an avid fanbase, Prime still felt the story...

‘The Right Stuff’ marked Patrick J. Adams’s first project after ‘Suits’
From lawyer to astronaut, Adams took a step back in time with the 2020’s The Right Stuff. The Disney+ adaptation based on Tom Wolfe’s bestselling book of the same name followed Adams as John Glenn and the rest of the original Mercury 7.

A lot can happen in 146 days. When the Writers Guild strike started in May, Drew Barrymore was one of its early folk heroes, when she stepped down as host of the MTV Movie & TV Awards in solidarity. But four months later, Barrymore became one of the strike’s most reviled public figures when she tried to rationalize the decision to bring back her daytime talk show in the midst of a work stoppage. There were many winners and losers to come out of this hot labor summer, and it’s not over yet, as SAG-AFTRA looks to seal its own deal with the AMPTP. But as the WGA prepares to vote on its hard-fought new contract, here are some of the entities that made it to the other side on the rise — or a bit imperiled.

Peacock has reversed course and canceled the second season of its Pitch Perfect TV spinoff Bumper in Berlin, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
The renewal was first announced back in January, after the show’s first six-episode season debuted on Nov. 23, 2022. At the time of the renewal, NBCU said Bumper in Berlin was the streamer’s top comedy series to date, but has not released any viewing data.
The cancellation comes amid Hollywood’s dual WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, and marks yet another series, alongside the canceled second seasons of Prime Video’s The Peripheral and A League of Their Own, to have the plug pulled during the work stoppage. At the time, A League of Their Own co-creator and star Abbi Jacobson criticized Prime Video’s decision, writing that “to blame this cancellation on the strike is bullshit and cowardly.”

In the latest sign of a new coalition between showrunners and crew during the writers strike, a showrunner match fundraiser has blown past its initial goal of raising $500,000 for the Entertainment Community Fund in less than a week.
The so-called Showrunner Fundraising Match was launched on Sept. 11 in an effort to help support film and TV workers who are not out on strike but have been impacted by the work stoppage that is inching closer to becoming the longest strike in the Writers Guild of America’s history.
The idea stemmed from a group chat that has close to 500 showrunners on WhatsApp in which someone flagged that Joelle Garfinkel’s Green Envelope Grocery Aid was backlogged and low on funds to help industry members who were financially impacted during the labor strife. Within a day, the group that launched as a way to stay in touch during the WGA strike...

This article contains spoilers for Futurama season 11 episode 6.
The Matt Groening-verse just got a little bigger. The latest episode of Futurama, “I Know What You Did Next Xmas,” finally confirms that The Simpsons, Futurama, and Disenchantment are connected by more than just writers and producers. But the timeline’s probably not what – or should we say when – you’re thinking.
Disenchantment is Matt Groening and Josh Weinstein’s medieval fantasy-skewing follow-up to Futurama and The Simpsons. Originally sold as an episodic comedy similar to those shows, Disenchantment is actually a coming-of-age adventure series, following Princess Bean (Abbi Jacobson) as she reckons with her future place in the kingdom of Dreamland, and her complicated past. Something that the trailer for the recently announced fifth and final season is much less coy about than previously.

Prime Video’s reimagining of Penny Marshall’s beloved 1992 classic A League of Their Own had been renewed for a second season, but fans were shocked when the streaming service reversed the renewal last week. Will Graham, who co-created A League of Their Own with Abbi Jacobson, took to X/Twitter to discuss the impact of the cancellation and his hopes for season 2.
“Making this show is so hard and so great,” Will Graham wrote. “There’s quite a bit to say about what’s been hard, but at this point that’s in the past. Of course, if we have an avenue to do it well, we will continue the show, and I love seeing the noise you’re making in support of that. The noise matters!“

Abbi Jacobson is calling out Amazon Prime Video over the cancellation of a shortened “A League of Their Own” Season 2.
The series’ star, co-creator, and executive producer took to Instagram to address the news that the slated final four episodes of “League” are no longer moving forward due to the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.
“What luck I have had to get to tell these stories and play this character I love so much. What a rare thing in life,” Jacobson captioned. “And so I am sad today. To blame this cancellation on the strike, is bullshit and cowardly. But this post isn’t about all that. About all the ways this show has been put through the ringer. Not today.”
The “Broad City” alum continued, “This post here is about the special show I was lucky to make with so many incredibly talented artists and actors and writers and crew.

Prime Video Cancels 'A League of Their Own' Despite Season 2 Renewal in the Midst of Writers Strikes
Unfortunately, it’s two strikes and your out for the Prime Video series “A League of Their Own.” After a critically acclaimed first season on the Amazon service, the adaption of the iconic 1992 movie of the same name was canceled, but the streamer announced that it would get a four-episode second season before wrapping up. However, it has been announced that those plans have changed and that Prime Video would not be moving forward with the abbreviated Season 2 after all.

Although the scripts for all four second-season episodes were completed before the work stoppages, the delays brought on by the dual Writers Guild of America and SAG/AFTRA strikes made it difficult for Amazon to move forward. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the strikes have made it practically impossible for the new episodes of both “A League of Their Own” and “The Peripheral” to be...

Last Friday, it was announced that Prime Video’s comedy series, “A League of Their Own,” was canceled. That’s nothing too crazy, at first glance, right? Shows get canceled all the time, especially in this era of streamers cutting expenses. However, much like what Netflix did with “Glow” and what Prime Video also recently did with “Peripheral,” ‘League’ was canceled after a second season (though shortened) was already ordered.

The co-creator and star of A League of Their Own is speaking out after Prime Video's decided to cancel the drama series despite previously renewing it.
The series was canceled alongside The Peripheral on Friday night, with many believing both were casualties of the ongoing SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes.
Abbi Jacobson, who plays Carson Shaw in the series, took to social media over the weekend after Prime Video rescinded the show's four-episode second season.
"What luck I have had to get to tell these stories and play this character I love so much," she wrote.
"What a rare thing in life. And so I am sad today."
Jacobson addressed the rumors that the series was let go due to the dual strikes.
"To blame this cancellation on the strike is bulls—t and cowardly."

“A League of Their Own” co-creator and star Abbi Jacobson has reacted to the news that Amazon has scrapped Season 2 due to the ongoing strikes, calling the decision “bullshit and cowardly.”
On Friday, Variety confirmed that the series — based on the 1992 baseball film of the same name — would no longer be going forward with its shortened final season, which was greenlit in April. According to sources, the cancellation came about due to the writers and actors strike against the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP).
