Well… Oscar night 2022 was certainly one to remember. Many obituaries will have received their first lines last night, and there’s a few moments that will appear half way down for some of them.
But – here’s the good news: Sian Heder’s Coda won Best Picture, and genuine living legend Troy Kotsur took home the Best Supporting Actor award. It may have been a surprise for some, as Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog was hotly favoured. In the second piece of excellent news it was Campion herself who took home the Best Director gong, many would argue it’s long overdue.
Elsewhere Encanto, Will Smith, Jessica Chastain all took to the stage to collect their awards, and it’s pleasing to see another year when the awards were well spread out. It’s a sign of an industry in fine fettle, which is just as well given,...

The Netflix western “The Power of the Dog” entered these awards with a leading 12 nominations, which is also the most nominations any Netflix film has ever received. But was it destined to become the first film from a streaming distributor to take top honors? To achieve that the film had to battle against Apple’s “Coda,” which only had three nominations but won crucial awards from the Screen Actors Guild, Writers Guild, and Producers Guild, the last of which uses the same kind of ranked-choice voting as the Oscars.

Jenny Beavan won an Oscar tonight in the Best Achievement in Costume Design category for her work on Disney’s Cruella.
This is Beavan’s third Oscar win for Costume Design, having won in 2016 for Mad Max: Fury Road and in 1987 for A Room with a View.
Beavan started her acceptance speech by jokingly saying, “If you hear a really embarrassing noise, it’s probably my family somewhere up there.”
Based on the iconic villain from 101 Dalmatians, Cruella follows a young woman named Estella (Emma Stone) who dreams of being a fashion designer. When she manages to land her dream job designing for the Baroness (Emma Thompson), Estella quickly becomes convinced that she deserves more in life. Taking on the persona of Cruella, she becomes a rival of the Baroness with a rebellious sense of fashion.

The films in contention for the 2022 Best Costume Design Oscar are “Cruella,” “Cyrano,” “Dune,” “Nightmare Alley,” and “West Side Story.” Our current odds show “Cruella” (16/5) to be the frontrunner, followed in order by “Dune” (39/10), “West Side Story” (4/1), “Nightmare Alley” (9/2), and “Cyrano” (9/2).
Jenny Beavan’s nomination for “Cruella” is her 11th and could result in her third win, as she previously bagged trophies for “A Room with a View” (1987) and “Mad Max: Fury Road” (2016). Ten years as a working actress on Broadway has given Ariana DeBose a grounded approach to the swell of accolades accompanying her performance as the iconic Anita in Steven Spielberg’s remake of West Side Story. Following a legacy of iconic performances, both on stage and film, DeBose is allowing herself to pave her own path, giving this moment of successes and critical appreciation a charming, honest, culturally modern spin.
Deadline: What was your first impression of the character of Anita growing up?
Ariana Debose: I grew up watching West Side Story on my grandmother’s television. Turner Classic Movies was playing it and I was really into old movies as a kid. That and soap operas with my grandmother because that’s what we did together.
Deadline: Which soap opera did you like to watch?
Debose: Days of Our Lives. I’m still invested in Marlena and John.

“The Power of the Dog” won four awards overall, including three for Campion — Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay. The film also won Best Cinematography for Ari Wegner.
Heading into the ceremony, both “West Side Story” and “Belfast” led all films with 11 nominations. Each movie went home with significant honors. “Belfast” won filmmaker Kenneth Branagh the Best Original Screenplay award, while the film’s cast was cited as the Best Ensemble and youngster Jude Hill won Best Young Actor. “West Side Story” won Best Supporting Actress for DeBose and Best Editing.

Last Updated March 10: “Cruella” and “Dune” received Oscar momentum as the period and sci-fi film winners March 9 at the 24th Costume Designer Guild Awards. This clearly puts “Cruella’s” two-time Oscar winner Jenny Beaven in the driver’s seat against “Dune’s” Jacqueline West and Robert Morgan, and “West Side Story’s” Paul Tazewell.
Last Updated February 10: The costume design Oscar nominees — “Cruella” (Disney), “Cyrano” (MGM/UA), “Dune” (Warner Bros.), “Nightmare Alley” (Searchlight/Disney), and “West Side Story” (20th Century/Disney) — are all distinguished and eclectic, delving into a range of period styles that inform the characters and their worlds. It’s a race that boasts three Oscar winners — “Cruella’s” Jenny Beaven, “Cyrano’s” Jacqueline Durran, and “Nightmare Alley’s” Luis Sequeira (“The Shape of Water”) — two previous nominees — “Cyrano’s” co-designer Massimo Cantini Parrini (“Pinocchio”) and “Dune’s” Jacqueline West — and “West Side Story’s” acclaimed...

“Cruella” got a big boost in its Oscar bid for Best Costume Design with a win on March 9 at the Costume Designers Guild Awards. It prevailed in the period design race over three of its Oscar rivals — “Cyrano,” “Nightmare Alley” and “West Side Story” — plus “House of Gucci.”
Its closest Oscar competition could be “Dune,” which won the fantasy/sci-fi prize at the CDG Awards on Wednesday. The other CDG winner was the contemporary film “Coming 2 America.”
In its 23-year history, the CDG has previewed only 11 of the Oscar winners for Best Costume Design; eight of these have been period pictures and three have been sci-fi or fantasy flicks. Of the last five Costume Designers Guild Awards winners two have gone on to repeat at the Academy Awards: “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” in 2021 and “Black Panther” in 2019.
In 2018, “The Shape of Water” won with the guild while “Phantom Thread” prevailed at the Oscars.

“Cruella” (Disney),” “Dune” (Warner Bros.), and “Coming 2 America” (Amazon Prime) were the big film winners Wednesday night at the 24th annual Costume Designers Guild Awards. “Cruella” designer and two-time Oscar winner Jenny Beavan won for period; Denis Villeneuve’s epic “Dune” took sci-fi honors for costume designers Jacqueline West and Robert Morgan; and Oscar winner Ruth Carter (“Black Panther”) earned the contemporary prize for “Coming 2 America.”
Held at the The Broad Stage in Santa Monica, the annual awards celebrated the best in film, TV, and short-form costume design in eight categories that spanned fantasy, contemporary, and period works. Show hosts were actors Andrew Rannells (“The Prom”) and Casey Wilson (“The Shrink Next Door”).

Paul Tazewell, a first-time Oscar nominee for Costume Design, sat with Best Supporting Actress nominee Ariana DeBose (who won the SAG Award earlier this week) in Disney’s panel for Deadline’s Contenders Film: The Nominees. The two have worked together on other projects, notably on Hamilton, before getting a call from Steven Spielberg about West Side Story that was too good to pass up.
Tazewell described how he likes to approach the job. “Ariana wears the clothes so well and knows how to control a skirt definitely. I just really dove into doing what it is I do which is dressing actors to the character and then highlighting the body that I have,” he said. “It is designing to the function of the clothes and then what needs to happen with choreography. The mighty “Dune” (from Warner Bros.) affirmed its craft dominance on Tuesday by grabbing eight out of a possible nine Oscar nominations (original song wasn’t in play). Thus, Denis Villeneuve’s sweeping and heady sci-fi ran the field with everything else: cinematography, costume design, editing, makeup/hair, original score, production design, sound, and visual effects. Historically, that puts “Dune” right behind “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” and “Titanic,” which both had nine craft noms.
The closest competitors with four noms were Jane Campion’s Netflix western, “The Power of the Dog”, and Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story” remake at Fox/Disney — which was two shy of the 1961 original. Landing three noms were Guillermo del Toro’s “Nightmare Alley” at Searchlight/Disney and Daniel Craig’s James Bond finale, “No Time to Die,” at MGM/UA.

From the moment I first watched Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story,” I knew I had seen something special. I immediately thought that this was, in fact, going to be the new Best Picture front-runner. Is that still the case as the Oscar nominations approach?
SEERachel Zegler (‘West Side Story’) missed SAG, but ‘there’s a place’ for her at the Oscars
The film was enjoyed by those who saw it, earning a grade-a CinemaScore, stellar reviews from critics, and an even higher audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. And it received a leading 11 nominations from the Critics Choice Awards. But “West Side Story,” however you want to slice it, is a remake. What’s more, it’s a remake of a beloved movie that won 10 Oscars 60 years ago; Spielberg was just 15 at that time. So there’s a question of whether Oscar voters will view Spielberg’s movie favorably compared to the original.

With the announcement on Feb. 1 of the contenders for the Artios Awards, which are bestowed by the Casting Society of America, we’ve now heard from all 13 guilds. The CSA was the only group to hold off till the end of Oscar nominations voting. Four of our five predicted nominees for Best Costume Design at the 2022 Oscars reaped bids on January 26 for the Costume Designers Guild Awards.
“Cruella,” “House of Gucci” and “West Side Story” contend here in the period picture category against “Cyrano” and “Nightmare Alley,” which rank sixth and seventh in our Oscar odds.
Another likely Oscar contender, “Dune,” vies here in the sci-fi/fantasy race against “The Green Knight,” “The Matrix Resurrections,” “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” “Spider-Man: No Way Home” and “The Suicide Squad.”
Our fifth predicted Oscar nominee, “Spencer,” can take heart that the guild often overlook films that go on to contend at the Academy Awards. Indeed the 2020 Oscar winner for Best Costume Design, “Little Women,” was snubbed by the CDG as were two of the other nominees, “The Irishman” and “Joker.” The guild honored one of the other academy nominees, “Jojo Rabbit.”

The nominations for the Costume Designers Guild Awards will be released on Wednesday, recognizing the achievements of the artisans that created some of the most memorable outfits and clothing designs of the year. Following the 10-month eligibility window, the community of over 1,200 members separates the film categories into three groups — contemporary, period and sci-fi/fantasy.
The distinctions between contemporary and period tend to get blurred, especially with modern subjects like Princess Diana in “Spencer” and Venus and Serena Williams in “King Richard” among the selections. However, per the CDG rules, “any entry with at least 51% of all costumes existing in a historical era greater than 25 years [on or before December 31, 1995] from the current entry year will be considered a period entry.”
That puts Jacqueline Durran (“Spencer”) and Sharen Davis (“King Richard”) into the period film field, where it’s indisputably the most competitive. Three of the five nominees from CDG typically translate to an...

On the list of iconic costumes from the last 60 years, few are likely as recognizable as Rita Moreno’s famous purple dress from “West Side Story.” It’s an outfit Moreno’s Anita wears in what is arguably the Oscar-winning musical’s two most iconic scenes: the famed “Dance at the Gym” and then the performance of “America.”
“I was totally enamored with the woman in the purple dress who was just dancing with this reckless abandon,” Ariana DeBose, who plays Anita in Steven Spielberg’s new version of “West Side Story,” previously told Gold Derby. “I so desperately wanted to do that because I think I came out of the womb dancing. If you want to win an Oscar for Best Costume Design, it’s best to pick a project for which you can create frilly dresses from a bygone era. Since its introduction at the 1948 Academy Awards, this category has favored period pictures, including last year’s winner “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” Voters love to reward the creative forces behind such films, especially those that are about the aristocracy including recent champs “Marie Antoinette” (2007), “Elizabeth: The Golden Age” (2008), “The Duchess” (2009), “The Young Victoria” (2010), and “Anna Karenina” (2013). Exclusive: A newly launched financial grant program called The 1/52 Project will offer $15,000 grants to theater designers, with a mission to encourage early career designers from historically excluded groups and to diversify the Broadway design community.
Funded by designers with shows running on Broadway, the 1/52 Project encourages the working designers to donate one week every year of their weekly royalties to this fund. Applicants will be chosen based on talent, creativity, innovation, and potential for future excellence in the professional theatrical field. Demonstrated financial need will be a determining factor.
Beowulf Boritt, the Tony Award-winning set designer who founded the fund, said in a statement, “I always understood how lucky I was to work on Broadway, how tough it is to get that opportunity. But the past few years made clear to me what should probably have already been obvious, that part of my ‘good luck’ was being born a white boy,...

The Jets and the Sharks, the rival gangs at the center of Steven Spielberg’s remake of “West Side Story” (in theaters now), battle over turf and bragging rights in a rapidly gentrifying sliver of 1950s Manhattan. Their conflict is fueled in part by racism and tribalism, as well as a mounting sense of economic insecurity. At times, tensions explode in knife fights and slugfests. Their differences are also illustrated by the clothes they wear when attending dances or squaring off at rumbles.
For the Jets, the group of Caucasian “delinquents” run by Tony (Ansel Elgort) and Riff (Mike Faist), costume designer Paul Tazewell outfitted the gang members in denim jackets and jeans, preferring a “cooler” palette for their clothes. In the case of their rivals, the Sharks, a Puerto Rican gang composed of recent transplants to New York, Tazewell chose clothes that were a little more formal and ones that frequently had floral prints.

The 2022 Critics Choice Awards nominations announced on December 13 are topped by “Belfast” and “West Side Story” with a leading 11 bids each, followed closely by both “Dune” and “The Power of the Dog” at 10. “Licorice Pizza” and “Nightmare Alley” earned eight nominations apiece while both “King Richard” and “Don’t Look Up” picked up six. West Side Story—a curious exception in the modern glut of sequels and remakes, with its powerhouse combination of hallowed subject matter and director—announces itself immediately. Where the 1961 original, helmed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins, began with a series of aerial shots over New York City, director Steven Spielberg opts for an elaborate crane shot that etches out an important distinction: this story is set amid slums in the process of being cleared for Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, the immaculate Manhattan arts complex where, it must be said, the film premiered a few days ago. While previous incarnations of the Romeo and Juliet-inspired musical—with music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by the dearly departed Stephen Sondheim—were identifiably set in a downtrodden New York, an entirely different sense of precarity begins here, woven into the fabric of the film, as the Jets’ struggle with...

Billy Crystal is returning to Broadway and revisiting one of his most popular film roles: Mr. Saturday Night, a new musical based on the 1992 movie will begin performances at the Nederlander Theatre next spring.
Crystal will play Buddy Young Jr., the veteran comedian looking for a comeback. Crystal portrayed the character in the film, which also marked his directorial debut.
Mr. Saturday Night begins performances on March 1, 2022, with an official opening night on March 31.
“Creating and portraying the 75-year-old comedian Buddy Young Jr. in the film of Mr. Saturday Night was one of the highlights of my career,” Crystal said in a statement, adding, “30 years ago I needed 5 hours of make-up to play him, now I just show up.”
Co-starring will be Randy Graff as Elaine Young; David Paymer, who appeared with Crystal in the 1991 movie City Slickers, recreating his Oscar-nominated role as Buddy’s brother Stan Yankelman; and Chasten Harmon as agent Annie Wells.

Past Oscar nominees and winners dominate this category and it’s a case of the futuristic science-fiction looks of “Dune,” created by Jacqueline West and Bob Morgan, versus Jacqueline Durran in “Spencer” as the two front-runners in the costume design race.
Denis Villeneuve’s epic needed an army of artisans to craft the looks of Arrakis and the different worlds — a mighty task in itself. West and Morgan also had to bring to life the stillsuits, described by author Frank Herbert as “the color of the rocks.”
“Each one had to be cut on a mold of the actors’ bodies because the movement of the body is what theoretically activates the stillsuit and turns it into a distillery,” West says.
Both in the book and film, the suits take human wastewater and turn it into a gas, “and then that filters through all of the tubing in the suit as...

Tituss Burgess is stacking the aces and loading the dice to get to Easy Street as Rooster in NBC’s production of “Annie Live!”
In “Annie Live!,” Burgess will portray the sleazy Rooster, younger brother of main villain Miss Hannigan (played by Taraji P. Henson), in this live holiday production of the classic musical. Henson as the classic villain (and Rooster’s big sister) Miss Hannigan, Harry Connick, Jr. as benevolent businessman Daddy Warbucks and Nicole Scherzinger as Warbucks’ kid-loving secretary Grace.
