Today, Netflix announced the start of production in Calgary on Season 1 of The Abandons, a pulse-pounding action drama set in the West by Kurt Sutter via his SutterInk banner.
“I am fascinated by the metamorphosis of good into evil. What must transpire to drive the morally sound to become the dangerously corrupt,” said Sutter. “The Abandons explores those complex compromises through the most powerful human instinct — the love and protection of mothers.”
As a group of diverse, outlier families pursue their Manifest Destiny in 1850s Oregon, a corrupt force of wealth and power, coveting their land, tries to force them out. These abandoned souls, the kind of lost souls living on the fringe of society, unite their tribes to form a family and fight back.

Creator Mike Flanagan’s latest and final series collaboration with Netflix, “The Fall of the House of Usher,” takes on the works of Edgar Allan Poe. Much like “The Haunting of Bly Manor,” Flanagan’s latest uses a classic short story as the central narrative framework to remix a variety of Poe’s macabre poems and short stories but with Flanagan’s signature pathos. Unlike previous Netflix series, “The Fall of the House of Usher” eschews the familiar melancholy and dials up the gallows humor for a twisted tale that’s unafraid to get grisly.
In the process, however, it’s less effective at organically adapting Poe.
Like the source story, “The Fall of the House of Usher” begins with Auguste Dupin (Carl Lumbly) called to a crumbling estate for a final meeting with the deteriorating Roderick Usher (Bruce Greenwood). With time drawing to a close and haunted by horrific...

Mike Flanagan's grip on the horror genre will continue on Netflix this fall with The Fall of the House of Usher.
Netflix on Tuesday released the trailer for The Haunting of Hill House creator's next project.
The drama is based on the works of Edgar Allan Poe and follows the Usher family as "past secrets come to light when the heirs to the Usher dynasty start dying at the hands of a mysterious woman from their youth."
It's a compelling hook and the official trailer promises we're in for a terrifying journey across eight episodes.
Will there be a way to stop this mysterious individual from the past, or will the Ushers realize that death is inevitable?
The footage raises many questions about the family's dealings, and truthfully, they may be one of the most despicable families on the small screen.

Netflix has slated Thursday, October 12, for the premiere of The Fall of the House of Usher, its eight-episode limited series from Mike Flanagan based on the works of Edgar Allan Poe. The streamer also released some of the first images of the series, which you can see above and below.
Starring Bruce Greenwood, who replaced Frank Langella as the lead back in April 2022 after Langella was fired following a misconduct investigation, the series is described as an epic tale of greed, horror and tragedy. Poe’s short story The Fall of the House of Usher, which serves as the basis for the show, features themes of madness, family, isolation and identity.
It’s been a long road for the series, which was halfway through production when Langella was fired and his scenes had to be reshot.

The Midnight Club, the latest series from genre filmmaker Mike Flanagan, is currently available to watch on the Netflix streaming service – and next up is the Edgar Allan Poe-inspired limited series The Fall of the House of Usher. Netflix hasn’t announced a premiere date for that one yet, but Flanagan took the opportunity to hype it up a bit during a recent interview with The Wrap… and even compared to the Giallo style!
Here’s what Flanagan had to say about The Fall of the House of Usher:
It’s crazy. It is unlike anything I’ve ever done, but in the other direction. My favorite way to describe it to people is like The Haunting of Hill House is kind of a string quartet, and The Haunting of Bly Manor is this delicate, kind of beautiful piece of classical piano music, and The Fall of the House of Usher...

Shirley Jackson, Henry James — now it's Edgar Allan Poe's turn to get the Mike Flanagan miniseries treatment. The "Haunting" anthology creator is hard at work on yet another literary adaptation, this time in the form of "The Fall of the House of Usher." The show will mark his latest project for Netflix, coming after his acclaimed slasher film "Hush" and Stephen King movie "Gerald's Game," as well as the first two seasons of "The Haunting," his limited series "Midnight Mass," and "The Midnight Club."
The latter of those titles, a TV show Flanagan and Leah Fong ("Once Upon a Time") developed based on Christopher Pike's 1994 YA horror novel of the same name, only just premiered on Netflix and has garnered mostly good reviews. However, /Film's Chris Evangelista felt it failed to uphold the high standard we've come to expect from Flanagan, describing it as "inert and dull [and] lacking any genuine frights.

Mike Flanagan’s horror reign at Netflix is set to continue with an adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Fall of the House of Usher.” The streaming giant announced today that Flanagan will develop a limited series “based on multiple works from Edgar Allan Poe,” although the title for the series will be the same as Poe’s 1839 short story. “Usher” will be the fifth series to come out of Flanagan and Trevor Macy’s first look deal with Netflix under their Intrepid Pictures production banner. Previous Netflix horror series include “The Haunting of Bly Manor,” “The Haunting of Hill House,” “Midnight Mass,” and the upcoming “The Midnight Club.”
Netflix isn’t providing any further details about Flanagan’s “The Fall of the House of Usher,” other than confirming the limited series will run eight episodes. Flanagan will direct four of the episodes himself, while Michael Fimognari will also direct four installments.
