In the golden age of television, the New York Television Festival is quickly becoming the place to find the next crown jewel. Now in its 12th year, the festival continues to grow each year both in scope and prestige, boasting a record number of submissions, artists, and industry participation.
“It’s taken us a couple of years to get to this point, but we’re hitting our stride at a time where there is great creativity in TV and digital,” said Nytvf Founder and Executive Director Terence Gray, surveying the room bustling with pitch meetings on plush couches. “It’s fun, you see these incredibly talented people that are being given a shot to sit down with agents and managers and executives.”

When prominent DJ and music producer Diplo appears at Coachella this weekend, he will take the stage with a new title on his resume -- film producer. Fox has acquired a pitch from writers Adam Weinstock and Andy Jones, which Diplo (ne Wes Pentz) will executive produce with business partner Kevin Kusatsu. The film's producers declined to divulge too much about the plot, but said it's about a kid who wants to be a DJ more than anything in the world. He goes to a music festival to find Diplo and...

While it took them a few years, Hollywood has recently discovered all that dubstep has to offer -- every third trailer from last year had a bass drop. Though it’s taken a bit longer for the powers to be to recognize Edm, or electronic dance music, 20th Century Fox has bought the rights and is twiddling the knobs on an untitled Edm-themed film built around one of its biggest stars. Pitched as “‘8 Mile’ meets ‘Project X,’” the film will focus on three teens trying to gain access into Diplo’s own Electronic Music Festival (he will be executive producing the endeavor according to Pitchfork). With many mainstream artists poaching Edm DJs for their own hit songs it’s a no-brainer that studios would want to get in on the action. As it’s just the pitch that was bought, there’s no timeline on production, and no script has...

From the files of Big Business Has Discovered Dance Music: Fox is racing to get a Diplo movie off the ground.
Some catch-up for those who are unfamiliar: Diplo heads up Mad Decent, an independent record label that releases an astounding amount of music, mostly for free. The imprint focuses mostly on dance (trap, house, dancehall, etc.) and hip-hop. He is also a legendary pop and hip-hop producer (he's behind Snoop and No Doubt's latest records) and globe-trotting DJ in his own right, both under his own name and as part of Major Lazer, which has an album that's due out April 16.
Without being too laudatory, he's probably one of music's biggest influencers when it comes to internet-friendly listeners. (Remember "Harlem Shake," the Billboard No. 1 that came out of nowhere? It's made by Baauer, one of Diplo's signees.)

Exclusive: 20th Century Fox has acquired an untitled pitch that will be built around the Electronic Dance Music craze, and will involve one of its biggest stars, Diplo. The film will be written by Adam Weinstock and Andy Jones, and Underground’s Trevor Engelson is producing. Noah Rothman is exec producer. Underground is teamed with Diplo and his business partner Kevin Kusatsu, both of whom are exec producers. The pic’s described as 8 Mile meets Project X in tone, as three teens try to get into Diplo’s Electronic Music Festival. Weinstock and Jones are represented by CAA and Underground. Edm, which I gather is a cousin to rave music, is a huge industry where the DJs are the big stars. Hollywood is waking up to its appeal, and this becomes one of several films to take root with Edm as its backdrop.
