Dozens of top Hollywood creatives and activists have signed an open letter in response to the shuttering of production company Participant — imploring the industry to continue to effect change through film and television as the defunct company once did.
George Clooney, Aflonso Cuarón, Ava DuVernay, Jane Fonda, Regina King, Viola Davis, #MeToo founder Tarana Burke, civil rights attorney Bryan Stevenson, Color of Change president Rashad Robinson and more are signators, in addition to groups like GLAAD and Human Rights Watch. The letter was coordinated by the National Domestic Workers Alliance (Ndwa), which collaborated with Participant and director Cuarón on a visibility campaign for his 2018 Oscar winner “Roma.”
“As we say goodbye to Participant, we must underscore that values-based storytelling is needed now more than ever,” the letter states. “There is a whole ecosystem of people, connected by the work of the last 20 years of Participant, ready to work with you.

At last week’s A Day of Unreasonable Conversation held at The Getty Center, entertainment industry members heard from Hollywood and government leaders with varying cultural perspectives.
Jill Biden and Halle Berry at A Day of Unreasonable Conversation
Through thought-provoking discussions, impactful performances, and, at times, emotional conversations, A Day of Unreasonable Conversation surfaced new perspectives on today’s most complex topics to an audience of television writers, showrunners, and executives. Speakers were vulnerable in sharing stories that often do not get heard and urged the audience of TV creators to incorporate these experiences into their work.
First Lady Jill Biden and Halle Berry candidly discussed formerly taboo women’s health topics such as menopause, emphasizing the need for a new approach to women’s health research. Berry shared a personal story about how she realized that she was going through perimenopause, bringing forth blushes and laughter from the audience.

MSNBC’s Brian Williams Invokes ‘Jerry Maguire’ In Mocking Kevin McCarthy’s Meeting With Donald Trump
When MSNBC’s Brian Williams promised “exclusive video” of the meeting between House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy and former President Donald Trump, the result was a clip from Jerry Maguire.
The scene was a famous one. “You complete me,” Maguire, played by Tom Cruise, tells Dorothy Boyd, played by Renee Zellweger.
“You had me at hello,” she responds.
After the clip played, Williams’ guest, Baratunde Thurston, chuckled and another guest, Bill Kristol, smiled and shook his head.
“Obviously we have rolled the wrong clip and we were sold a bill of goods here,” Williams said.
The clip took off on social media. Fred Guttenberg, the gun reform advocate whose daughter was killed in the Parkland shooting massacre, tweeted it out, and it has drawn more than 1.3 million views.
“Someone of course is going to be in big trouble,” Williams added of the faux mix up.

"Dear White People" is dark, biting satire about young people coming to terms with their identities in a myriad of ways. A twist upon the usual frat hijinks of college-aged comedies, this debut from director Justin Simien manages to deftly create a film that's provocative, profound and particularly enjoyable, threading a needle that has foiled even veteran filmmakers.
With a stellar cast that delivers top-notch performances, this story is one of complexity and intelligence, facing head-on the ambivalent nature of having to conform to the expectations a community exerts on its own members, and the way that outsiders react to members of that community. It's heady stuff, to be sure, but done with a level of engagement that makes it terrific to watch.
The film took home the Dramatic Special Jury Award for Breakthrough Talent at the Sundance Film Festival last January, and finds its way to local screens this week.
