Exclusive: Netflix has canceled competitive figure skating drama Spinning Out after one season. The decision comes a little over month after Spinning Out‘s January 1 release, consistent with Netflix’s practice of evaluating a month worth of viewership data before making a renewal decision on bubble shows.
Created by former competitive figure skater Samantha Stratton, Spinning Out starred Kaya Scodelario as Kat Baker, a high-level figure skater who is about to turn in her skates after a disastrous fall takes her off the competition track. When Kat seizes an opportunity to continue her career as a pairs skater with a talented bad-boy partner, Justin Davis (Evan Roderick), she risks exposing a fiercely kept secret that could unravel her entire life. Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell’s Safehouse Pictures signed a first-look television deal with Legendary Television Studios.
The company, which produces series including Wgn’s Underground and Netflix’s forthcoming January Jones and Kaya Scodelario drama Spinning Out, has inked a two-year deal with the Carnival Row and Lost In Space studio.
Safehouse Pictures previously had an overall television deal with Warner Bros and in June closed a two-year first-look deal for features with Amblin Partners.
Ten-part series Spinning Out launches in early 2020 and on the feature side, Harold and Tunnell are producing sci-fil thriller Cloaker for Warner Bros, which Harold is also writing. Harold also recently exec produced John Wick 3: Parabellum. He also wrote The Flash for WB and DC and Army of the Dead, which Zack Synder is directing for Netflix. Jennifer Aniston is in talks to star in an untitled parenting comedy for Stx Films, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap. Sophie Goodhart (“My Blind Brother”) wrote the script and will direct.
