Sky Ferreira made a surprise cameo at Coachella Saturday when the singer appeared onstage before Kevin Abstract’s set to deliver a cover of Lady A’s “Need You Now.”
Without any official announcement, the leather jacket and sunglasses-clad Ferreira sauntered out onstage to the shock of fans, and promptly debuted her synth-laden (and unfortunately abridged) rendition of the smash single by the country band formerly known as Lady Antebellum.
Just as mysteriously as she emerged, Ferreira departed, leaving the former Brockhampton rapper Abstract to begin has set as planned.

Luke Combs is the man of the hour. The 59th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards nominations were announced on Tuesday morning, April 9, and Combs came out on top with eight bids, including Entertainer of the Year. Check out the complete list of nominations here.
This is Combs’s fifth nomination in a row for Entertainer of the Year, an award he has yet to win. This year he’s up against Kane Brown, Jelly Roll, Cody Johnson, Chris Stapleton, Morgan Wallen and lone female nominee Lainey Wilson. Women are consistently underrepresented in Entertainer of the Year, though Carrie Underwood won in 2020 (in a tie with Thomas Rhett) and Miranda Lambert finally prevailed in 2022. But we mustn’t underestimate Wilson here. She pulled off a huge upset at the CMA Awards last fall, claiming Entertainer of the Year despite being relatively new on the scene.

Country musician Colt Ford is in “stable but critical condition” after a post-concert heart attack left him hospitalized.
Ford, 54, performed in Arizona on Thursday night at Dierks Bentley‘s Whiskey Row. Following the show, Ford suffered a heart attack. Ford is being cared for in the intensive care unit in Mesa, Arizona, located near Phoenix.
Ford is known for his mix of country and rap in his music. The musician was formerly a professional golfer and went on the Nationwide Tour. Ford released his debut album in 2008. Ford co-wrote and recorded a version of “Dirt Road Anthem,” also sung by Jason Aldean and released on Aldean’s album My Kinda Country.
Ford has since collaborated with other country music artists such as Keith Urban and Lady A.
In May 2023, Ford revealed he had an autoimmune disease called Myasthenia Gravis. The disease, which affects the facial, eyes and throat muscles, has no known cure.

Dolly Parton honored Tom Petty with a gorgeous cover of his 1985 song, “Southern Accents,” which will appear on the upcoming tribute compilation Petty Country: A Country Music Celebration of Tom Petty.
“Southern Accents” is a tender ballad about Southern roots and a down-on-his luck Florida orange-picker. Parton stays faithful to the original, adding her own country twang, and juicing the poignancy further with a music video filled with old archival footage of Petty.
“I was fortunate enough to get to know Tom over the years,” Parton said in a statement.

Dolly Parton has revealed her reimagined rendition of Tom Petty’s song “Southern Accents” for the forthcoming compilation, Petty Country: A Country Music Celebration of Tom Petty.
The song features a prologue delivered by the late Tom Petty himself describing how the moment of inspiration that led to “Southern Accents.” Dolly Parton then provides an emotional, stirring rendition of the song, kept at the same balladeer tempo as Petty’s original. She retains much of the song, though she adds a crucial change to the song’s latter third when belting “Yes I’m proud to be what I am/ A southern girl from a southern town/ I ain’t ashamed, I ain’t ashamed, I ain’t ashamed.”

Carrie Underwood is a household name in country music, and is one of the biggest-selling artists to ever make waves in the genre. She is more than qualified to speak on country music, and recently, she gave her honest, raw take on the current state of the genre. So, what did she have to say?
Carrie Underwood Has Come A Long Way Since Her American Idol Start
Carrie Underwood was first introduced to a national audience when she competed on American Idol. She was the winner of Season 4 all the way back in 2005. Even back then, audiences recognized her star power. She may have not fully realized all of that potential until after winning her season, along with everything that came after, but the seeds for what she would become were already planted.

If you’ve attended a mainstream country concert in the past decade, you’re probably familiar with the part of the set where the headliner sprinkles in a non-obvious cover from an adjacent genre like pop, R&b, or classic rock. It’s a move with any number of purposes: to show an artist’s range of influences, to reel in a drifting crowd with a massive hit, to appeal to a wider audience, or to highlight how fluid and arbitrary genre borders really are when you strip a song back to its essentials.

The Grammy for Best Country Song has gone to some of the most iconic tunes ever in the genre. From all-time classics like Glen Campbell‘s “Gentle on My Mind” and Willie Nelson‘s “On the Road Again” to modern smash hits like Lady A’s “Need You Now” and critically acclaimed gems like Kacey Musgraves’s “Space Cowboy,” voters are often very careful and accurate in awarding the very best in country music. This year’s set of nominees is, in my opinion, one of the strongest the category has ever seen, with a mix of Grammy favorites and already-classic country songs facing off.
Perhaps the only song that doesn’t have much of a chance to win here is Brandy Clark’s “Buried.” The track isn’t really a big hit or particularly acclaimed, and Clark will likely fare better in the Americana categories anyway. Still, Clark got six nominations this year,...

As The Voice completed its Season 24 Playoffs Tuesday evening, John Legend’s team members competed to remain in the contest after their coach cut his lineup in half. Did he make better selections than, say, Niall Horan (whose elimination of Alexa Wildish is sure to irritate me all the way through the finals) and Gwen Stefani (who kept Bias and Tanner Massey instead of Stee and Rudi)? Read on and find out!
Azán, “Adorn” — Grade: A | I’m giving John’s Super Save artist an “A” for her Miguel cover even though I kinda wasn’t crazy about it. She sang beautifully.

Ronnie Milsap will play his final Nashville concert Tuesday night, a guest-heavy salute to the piano player featuring Kelly Clarkson, Little Big Town, Sara Evans, Parker McCollum, Breland, Ricky Skaggs, and more. Milsap is 80 now and regarded as a pillar of country music — the Country Music Hall of Fame inducted him in 2014 — but at heart, he remains an unapologetic pop vocalist.

During Thursday night’s inaugural People’s Choice Country Awards, Blake Shelton was crowned the social country star of 2023 — a win that puzzled the country legend, to say the least.
“I moved to Nashville in 1994 and man, I had a lot of dreams — this was not one of them,” Shelton said as he received his award at the Thursday night ceremony. “I don’t even know what this means, but if the fans want me to have it, I’m damn well going to put it on my mantle.”
Shelton continued by thanking his country music fans, and relishing in the glory of his new title, jokingly saying “that’s right, social media.”
The awards ceremony, which aired live from Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry House on NBC, also recognized the country star with several other nominations for the night’s awards, including the people’s artist of 2023, male artist...

In a candid interview with Billboard, Kelley — who is about 15 months sober — admitted he’s feeling better than he expected.
“It’s led me a lot closer to my spirituality.”
“I never thought I would actually enjoy it, you know?” he said. “I thought, ‘Ok, I’m gonna do this for my family, I’m gonna do this for my band, I’m gonna do this for myself.’ But I think it’s the energy you get from not having crazy nights and all of those different things.”

Bahamas’ entire aesthetic is one of taking the piss. The Sad Hunk title of his last album, his Zoolander press photos shot at the gym, and even his very stage name suggest he’s telling a joke with an awfully long punchline. But on his new album Bootcut, the Canadian creative born Afie Jurvanen couldn’t be more genuine. Or as they love to say in country music, “authentic.”
Bootcut, as its title implies, is a collection of country-inspired ballads fleshed out with steel guitar, thoughtful lyrics, and a guest spot by Vince Gill.

2023 has been a landmark year for country music, largely thanks to the success of artists like Luke Combs, Zach Bryan, Lainey Wilson, and, yes, Morgan Wallen. Such success also comes, perhaps coincidentally, in a year when other typically popular genres like pop and hip-hop have been struggling to push out true smash hits. This country dominance raises the question of whether it will be reflected come Grammy time.
The Grammys have been a bit snobby towards country music in the last few years. The last time a country song was nominated for Record of the Year was in 2013, when Taylor Swift’s “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” got in. That song was submitted in the Grammys’ pop categories though, so if we go by Grammy classification, the last country song to get a Record nomination was actually Lady A’s “Need You Now,” which won in 2011. Since then,...

Last week, Tracy Chapman made country music history by becoming the first Black woman to be the sole songwriter of a Number One country hit when Luke Combs’ cover of her 1988 song “Fast Car” topped the charts.
While celebratory — “I never expected to find myself on the country charts, but I’m honored to be there,” Chapman said — the milestone was also a stark reminder of the historical precarity and lack of opportunities for Black women as songwriters in Nashville: Chapman is just one of a small group of Black...

Tracy Chapman has become the first Black woman in history to have the sole songwriting credit on a No. 1 country hit, thanks to Luke Combs’ cover of her 1988 song “Fast Car.” It currently sits atop Billboard’s Country Airplay chart (dated July 8th).
As Rolling Stone notes, Chapman is only the fourth Black woman to have any writing credit on a No. 1 country song. She joins the club currently occupied by Alice Randall, who co-wrote Trisha Yearwood’s 1994 single “XXX’s and Ooo’s (An American Girl)”; Ester Dean, who co-wrote Lady A’s “Champagne Night” in 2020; and Tayla Parx, who co-wrote Dan+Shay’s 2021 song “Glad You Exist.”
Combs’ version of “Fast Car” is the second single from his latest album, Gettin’ Old. Earlier this month, it rose from No. 8 to No. 4 on the Hot 100, surpassing the No. 6 peak of Chapman’s original, which Combs said was his “first favorite song probably ever.
