It's been three years since Cassandra Clare's Shadowhunters ended its run on Freeform.
The show followed Clary Fray as she discovered that she comes from a long line of human-angel hybrids that hunt demons called Shadowhuinters.
Since the show's been off the air for three years, we thought we'd look at what the leads have done since the show's end!
Alan Van Sprang -- Valentine Morgenstern
Throughout the first two seasons, Valentine proved to be an intriguing villain, and Clary killed him more than once during his 28-episode run.
Alan Van Sprang brought his skills to the role and has moved on to have other recurring roles in different series since.
He portrayed Section 31 agent Leland during Season Two of Star Trek: Discovery and Chief detective Keith Alper during seasons two and three of In The Dark.
While there doesn't seem to be anything upcoming, we know we'll see...

This Shadow and Bone review contains no spoilers.
Millions of readers worldwide love young adult fantasy fiction, but even the most wildly popular titles—Sarah J. Maas’s Throne of Glass series, Cassandra Clare’s Shadowhunters books, Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games trilogy, and many more—are generally written off as “guilty pleasure” escapism, shallow, meaningless stories for people who just aren’t ready to take real literature seriously. (Barf.)
Part of this reaction likely stems from the widespread public backlash to the few young adult fantasy series to gain mainstream popularity, like the Twilight saga or the aforementioned Hunger Games. But, in truth, the dismissive attitude toward these stories most often feels like straight-up misogyny. After all, this is a genre that not only tends to be most openly appreciated by women but also one that unabashedly centers complex female characters in its stories. Often several of them at the same time!

Exclusive: Neal H. Moritz’s Original Film (The Boys) and Sony Pictures Television have acquired the rights to the upcoming War Arts Saga fantasy novel trilogy by The Lives of Tao bestselling author Wesley Chu to adapt it for television. The three books are set to be published by Del Rey in 2022, 2023 and 2024. Jason Ning is attached as writer, executive producer and showrunner. Uta Briesewitz will direct and executive produce.
War Arts Saga is set in a world where martial arts are magic, and a grandmaster takes a spoiled would-be hero under her wing to fulfill his destiny of defeating an immortal god-king and ending a centuries-long war. It’s a wide-ranging, grounded fantasy epic that constantly subverts classic fantasy tropes by pitting themes of prophecy, religion, and destiny against the absurdity and reality of life in a fictional 2nd Century world.

There have been some very public examples of works that began life as fanfiction only to later become published books— the most famous examples probably being E.L. James’ 50 Shades of Grey, Cassandra Clare’s City of Bones, or Anna Todd’s After. But not all works published on fanfiction websites are fanfiction. Fanfiction platforms, such as Archive of Our Own or Wattpad, also play host to “original” (not based on an existing canon) non-commercial fiction. While these original works are, by and large, less common than fic, they often have much in common with their transformative fandom neighbors.
Winter’s Orbit, a healing and action-packed queer romance space opera that hits bookshelves next week, began life as an original work on Archive of Our Own (AO3), where it gained an enthusiastic following. Cassandra Clare is the creator of The Shadowhunter Chronicles, which by this point in time, should be considered a full-fledged media franchise. For proof, look no further than the fact that the franchise now includes three novel series out of a planned total of five, which are on top of a movie, a TV show, short stories, graphic novels, and other forms of media. Based on this, it should come as no surprise to learn that The Shadowhunters Chronicles have proven to be very popular, thus enabling it to stand out from the countless novel series that are churned out

It's no secret that Shadowhunters is based on The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare.
Thankfully, the show put such a unique spin on the original story that it could probably keep even Clare herself guessing.

Even as a prequel, The Crimes of Grindelwald won't shy away from flashbacks, because that's just how Wizarding World lore rolls. In his memories and in front of the Mirror of Erised, Albus Dumbledore reveals a complicated, as well as frustratingly vague, relationship with the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald in his younger days. As evil as he may become, teenage Grindelwald is quite the looker. And after you get over his total suaveness, you may recognize him if you followed the original Harry Potter movie series.
Yup, Jamie Campbell Bower is, arguably, one of the many Easter eggs for Harry Potter fans. He portrayed Grindelwald not only in the latest prequel movie, but also way back in the days of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1. In the penultimate movie, Harry has a vision about a thief stealing the Elder Wand, and it's none other than Grindelwald. While Bower's role is relatively small,...

Freeform is closing the doors of the New York Institute earlier than expected: Shadowhunters won’t return for a fourth season, TVLine has learned.
The supernatural drama will wrap things up in the spring of 2019 with a 12-episode run — aka Season 3B, titled Shadowhunters: The Final Hunt — that will include a two-hour series finale event.
Season to date, Shadowhunters is averaging barely 400,000 total weekly viewers, down sharply from Season 2 and ranking fifth ranking all current Freeform programs.
“We are very proud of Shadowhunters, a series that broke new ground in the genre world and became a fan favorite,” the network said in a statement.

As the first part of season 3 is coming to a close, Shadowhunters’ last few episodes have focused on the main plot arc leading to what is expected to be an explosive finale, before the series comes back from its summer hiatus in September. Unsurprisingly, the main storyline revolves around Jace again, the series’ straight, white macho-in-distress.
This denotes not only a lack of creativity and will to challenge their own limits by the writers’ room, but has also meant the resurgence of problematic narratives that have followed the show since its inception and resurface from time to time, especially in connection to Jace and his relationship with Alec, Magnus and their romantic relationship.
While in name Jace and Alec are supposed to have a close, ‘brotherly’ bond, the show depicts a profoundly unequal, toxic relationship, aggravated by Jace’s disdain for Downworlders, his racist attitudes towards Magnus and a homophobic...

Screening at Canneseries as part of the Official Competition selection, “The Typist” follows Freya Becker, a typist with the homicide division of the Berlin police. Freya’s daughter, Marie, disappeared 11 years ago without a trace, but Freya is determined to uncover the truth, whatever the cost. I love the books, I was so excited to play Clary. Shadowhunters has never been a show that has closely stuck to its source material, the book series The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare. Yet the most recent episode, "Day of Wrath," took the biggest departure from the books yet. Though Jocelyn Fray survives the entire book series, Shadowhunters killed her off in "Day of Wrath." Shadowhunters is taking things to the next level for its second season. The series returns to Freeform on Monday, January 2 at 8/7c, and we got the chance to chat with the execs – Todd Slavkin and David Swimmer – as well as author Cassandra Clare for some juicy details.
Shadowhunters is the TV adaptation of the hit young adult novels, The Mortal Instruments.
The story originally appeared as a 2013 movie, starring Lily Collins and Jamie Campbell Bower, before being reworked for TV where it has seen further success.
The Freeform show follows the story of Clary Fray (portrayed by Katherine McNamara), a seemingly normal girl in New York City who discovers she is a Shadowhunter; a human-angel hybrid who has powers and must fight demons.
Along with other Shadowhunters Jace, Alec and Isabelle, and her best friend Simon, they search for her missing mother.
The first season laid the groundwork for Clary's adventure and the battles ahead.

Shadowhunters returns to Freeform on Monday, January 2. And just in time, as it seems the leading ladies will be going through an identity crisis in the second season.
As we also revealed in our interview with Shadowhunters execs Todd Slavkin, David Swimmer and author Cassandra Clare, the series is heading in a "darker, grittier, sexier" direction.
The tone is shifting – much to the delight of cast, crew and fans – and will see a greater focus on each and every one of the characters.
Particularly that of main heroine Clary Fray (played by Katherine McNamara).
The first season explored Clary being thrust into this new world of Shadowhunters.
But as McNamara notes, Clary (now familiar with her surroundings) will take a step back and evaluate her life.
"Does she even want to be a Shadowhunter? Does she want to go back to her old life? Can she go back or where does she want to be,...

32 years ago today, the acting debut of a music icon we lost this year opened in theaters. Audiences were first treated to Purple Rain on July 27, 1984. Purple Rain proved that Prince could be just as captivating in a feature-length film as he was onstage and in music videos. The rock musical debuted a month after the album of the same name hit record stores, giving us such hits as “When Doves Cry,” “Let’s Go Crazy,” and “I Would Die 4 U.” Other notable July 27 happenings in pop culture history; • 1940: Bugs Bunny made his official debut at a screening of the short film A Wild Hare. • 1979: The Amityville Horror opened in theaters. • 1982: Little Shop of Horrors had its Off-Broadway opening at the Orpheum Theatre. Article Excerpt Written by & Copyright Edward Gross From its debut earlier this season, the Shadowhunters TV series has worked its magic, ensnaring large audiences and consistently building its fervent fan following. Not really surprising considering that it's based on Cassandra Clare's best-selling (36 million copies in print) The Mortal Instruments books, the latest spin-off of which, Lady Midnight, was recently published. And even with a failed big screen adaptation in the form of 2013's The Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones in the mix, the franchise continues to grow in popularity - a point exemplified by the fact that the show has officially been renewed for a second season. "Listen, I think you have the marriage of the two most important components in being successful," offers executive producer/director McG. "One is archetypal story. I mean, come on, it's the Skywalker story. It's Peter Parker. It's everything I love. That's what...

Three years ago, Screen Gems and Entertainment One’s The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones failed to ignite a newfound Ya franchise in the way the studios had hoped. But in circling back to Cassandra Clare’s novel series and all the human-angel hybrids within, Freeform has crafted a new spin on the source material in the form of Shadowhunters.
With a first season now under its belt and a cult audience in tow, the network has renewed the sci-fi series for a second outing, ensuring that it will outlive its cinematic brethren after all.
Word comes by way of the Shadowhunters Facebook page, which recently featured a Q&A session with the core cast and crew. There, it was confirmed that Freeform will pick up Constantin Film and showrunner Ed Decter’s sci-fi drama, with the likes of Katherine McNamara, Dominic Sherwood and Alberto Rosende all primed to reprise their respective roles.
