One of the most anticipated and hottest films of 2024 is finally here. We are talking about Zendaya‘s Challengers which was memed to death for a threesome scene that was shown in the trailer but if you have seen the film then you know that the brilliance of the film is much more than that one scene. Directed by Call Me By Your Name‘s Luca Guadagnino from a screenplay by Justin Kuritzkes, the sports romantic drama follows the story of a talented tennis player Tashi, and her twisted relationship with two tennis players, one of whom is her husband now. Challengers stars Zendaya, Mike Faist, and Josh O’Connor in the lead role with Jordan Thompson, Faith Fay, Hailey Gates, and Tierre Diaz starring in supporting roles. So, if you loved the story of ambition and toxic relationships in Challengers you should check out these films with similar themes next.

“Uncut Gems” actor Hailey Gates has assembled an all-star cast for her directorial feature debut “Atropia,” which is produced by “Call Me By Your Name” director Luca Guadagnino.
“Masters of the Air” alum Callum Turner joins “Arrested Development’s” Alia Shawkat in the upcoming film, which shot last summer.
“Atropia” follows the story of an aspiring actress who is working on a U.S. military training base simulating an Iraqi war zone. (“Atropia” is the name of a fake country reportedly invented by the American military for interactive training exercises).
The feature is based on Gates’ 2019 short “Shako Mako” which she originally produced for fashion brand Miu Miu’s Women’s Tales series.
“Farah, a bread seller, walks the streets of a Middle Eastern town, while an American military vehicle, surrounded by soldiers, slowly passes by,” reads the logline for “Shako Mako.” “A moment’s silence. Then, a devastating explosion.

"Do you think you could move my room as far from the festivities as possible?" O Santa! Why are thou so bearded and jolly? O Night Divine is a 43-minute long (!!) promotional holiday short film made by the clothing company Zara. I'm not sure if they knew what they were getting into when they hired filmmaker Luca Guadagnino to make this, but in the end we all get to enjoy this lovely holiday advertising film. The short is set in St. Moritz, Switzerland (of course it is) and takes place on Christmas Eve, following a man named Hugo who is a busker. His crush is a woman who arrives at the hotel for her shift and walks right by him. There are other hotel workers featured in this, telling the story of their "outrageous adventures and joyous celebration" on this snowy Christmas Eve. John C. Reilly stars as Santa, with a cast including Alex Wolff,...

Is it possible that corporations can actually affect positive change in the world? Probably not, but while some throw meager sums at charity while earning profits off exploitative labor practices, others throw money at great artists. Which is why we have to thank Spanish apparel brand Zara for at least having great taste in filmmakers. The clothing retailer has hired Italian director Luca Guadagnino, maker of the lush romance “Call Me By Your Name,” to make a 43-minute short film called “O Night Divine.” If this is what it takes to get people to watch a short film, then deck the halls. Presumably, Guadagnino had full creative control, as he was able to enlist some other top-tier talent to flesh out this fanciful little Christmas treat. The film also features a score from Pedro Almodóvar’s trusted composer Alberto Iglesias.

New York-based Filipina filmmaker Isabel Sandoval’s “Lingua Franca,” about a transgender immigrant, is among 11 competition entries, all world premieres, that will launch from the Venice Film Festival’s independently run Venice Days section.
The only U.S. entry set to compete in the section modeled on Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight, “Lingua Franca” is Sandoval’s third work. It follows “Apparition” (2012), a period drama about cloistered Filipina nuns praised by Variety’s Richard Kuipers as an “outstanding sophomore feature.”
Produced by Tony- and Grammy-winning Filipino producer Jhett Tolentino, and by Darlene Malimas and Carlo Velayo, “Lingua Franca” is set in Brighton Beach, New York, where a transgender Filipina immigrant named Olivia – played by Sandoval, who is herself transgender – scrambles to avoid deportation. She becomes involved with a Russian slaughterhouse worker who is unaware that she’s trans.

Twin Peaks Recap is a weekly column by Keith Uhlich covering David Lynch and Mark Frost's limited, 18-episode continuation of the Twin Peaks television series. The key image in Part 5 of the revived Twin Peaks is of a woman in ecstasy. Recall, however, the subtitle that series co-creator/director David Lynch appended to his thorny 2006 masterpiece Inland Empire: "A Woman in Trouble." The line separating rapture and anguish is a blurry one, especially for Lynch's ladies, who are as likely to end up exquisitely chiseled corpses (the ubiquitous Laura Palmer; Part 2's doomed henchwoman Darya) as they are world-weary survivors. For the moment, let's focus on Rebecca "Becky" Burnett (Amanda Seyfried), daughter of Rr Diner waitress Shelly Johnson (Mädchen Amick), though Becky's last name—taken from ne'er-do-well husband Steven Burnett (Caleb Landry Jones)—obscures the identity of her father. (Dana Ashbrook's now-law-abiding Bobby Briggs is the most likely candidate,...

Twin Peaks Recap is a weekly column by Keith Uhlich covering David Lynch and Mark Frost's limited, 18-episode continuation of the Twin Peaks television series. What's an FBI Special Agent to do after being locked away for 25 years in unearthly purgatory? Episodes three and four of Mark Frost and David Lynch's revived Twin Peaks, which aired on Showtime this past Sunday in a two-hour block (aside from September's two-part finale, it's all single, hour-long episodes from hereon out), follow our besuited, Black Lodge-incarcerated hero Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) as he reintegrates into modern terrestrial society. So this is basically Peaks doing Rectify, just with a sterile death row replaced by an infernal hellscape out of Clive Barker. Or David Lynch, really. What's becoming more and more evident as the new Peaks progresses is that the series is, in large part, a repository for Lynch's subconscious, past and present.

Part of David Lynch’s allure as a filmmaker is his mystery: His work rarely explains itself, instead challenging the viewer to unpack the images and sounds Lynch conjures. So it’s a special treat to watch four of his actresses give a rare behind-the-scenes glimpse into what makes Lynch tick. With Showtime’s “Twin Peaks” revival just a month away from premiering, W Magazine sat down with four of Lynch’s heroines — Laura Dern, Naomi Watts, Patricia Arquette and Hailey Gates — to gain insight into the filmmaker. The best takeaway: Dern reveals Lynch’s nicknames for herself, Watts and Arquette.

Getting cast by David Lynch is a dream come true, but actually working with the filmmaker is an entirely different, very unpredictable beast. Laura Dern, Naomi Watts and Patricia Arquette know what it’s like better than anyone. Watts and Arquette are the women behind two of Lynch’s most iconic blondes, Betty Elms in “Mulholland Drive” and Renee Madison in “Lost Highway,” while Dern already has three Lynch films under her belt, with a fourth collaboration already wrapped thanks to the “Twin Peaks” revival.

The new "Twin Peaks" isn't slated to debut on Showtime until 2017, but a flurry of speculation about it happened last week with a tweet from Go For Locations indicating that filming had wrapped on the "first two seasons" of the series.
The episode count for the David Lynch-directed series was always in question, but that tweet suggested we'd be getting even more episodes than originally planned. Said tweet has since been deleted, so we'll have to wait to see how that pans out.
in the meantime in more official news, Showtime, Lynch and Mark Frost has released the official cast list for the new series with a whopping 217 names across the various episodes - a list that includes some real surprise big name inclusions such as Monica Bellucci, Michael Cera, Naomi Watts, Tim Roth, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Eddie Vedder, Ashley Judd, Ernie Hudson, Jim Belushi, Richard Chamberlain, Laura Dern,...

It’s familiar fodder for a comedy/drama. Y’know the story of a parent leaving the family unit in order to follow a dream. Then years later, having to return for an uncomfortable, often strained reunion that usually concludes with a big, new extended-family group hug. After a failed attempt (but sometimes successful) at acquiring fame and fortune the prodigal poppa realizes that everything he really desired was right in his back yard. We recently saw this occur in Danny Collins. But this new flick does a switcheroo with that formula. This time mom flew the coop in pursuit of her passions and dreams. Meryl Streep reteams with Jonathan Demme (they remade The Manchurian Candidate a few years ago) to tell Oscar-winning scribe Diablo Cody’s tale of, not speedster superheroes, family and rock n’ roll. Grab a brew and settle in for a solid set from Ricki And The Flash.

It’s basically a joke in Hollywood (one made at last year’s Academy Awards, in fact) that whenever Meryl Streep makes a movie she gets an Oscar nomination for it. The only exceptions tend to be when she veers more towards lighter fare, but this week she’ll challenge that notion with Ricki and the Flash, a musically tinged dramedy that sees her going for laughs as well as emotion. Working with director Jonathan Demme and writer Diablo Cody, Streep gets to exercise some new muscles, which is always appreciated. It might not be the next big awards vehicle for her, but it’s one of her more entertaining roles in some time. The film is centered on rocker Ricki Randazzo (Streep), who used to be Linda, a mother and wife. She ended the marriage, moved to California, and started the band Ricki and the Flash. Success has eluded her so far,...

The Flash and How To Dull It: Demme and Streep Concoct Uneven Rock Cocktail
We’ve known the multifaceted Meryl Streep, amongst her many surprising and highly touted talents, has considerable range and presence as a vocalist. Director Mike Nichols was well aware of this, utilizing her untapped virtue in early titles like Silkwood (1983) and Postcards From the Edge (1990), back when everyone was mainly agog over her filmography of accents. Now, an auteur who has maintained an equally lucrative career of a wide ranging trajectory, returns for his first narrative venture since 2008’s Rachel Getting Married for another bit of familial dysfunction with Ricki and the Flash, a vehicle resting comfortably on the shoulders of Streep’s musical abilities. Considering the performer’s striking ease and expected plausibility as an aged musician still chasing the dream, it is unfortunate the cotton candy concoction surrounding her is so intensely belabored.
