Horror has a long history of exploiting mental illness to create its monsters, but there are still relatively few films which place us inside the head of a person struggling with it, a person who desperately doesn’t want to become a danger to others. Christian Schultz and Thomas Johnston’s Presence is such a film, though it also has a number of other things going on, and some of these intersect awkwardly to dilute its overall effect.
We follow Jen (Jenna Lyng Adams), a woman whose struggle to manage her emotions is apparent at the outset, as is the difficulty she has had in maintaining a social life, probably as a result of people’s reactions to this. Two important figures in her life appear early on. There’s Sam (Alexandria DeBerry), who has apparently shown no interest in her for some time, but who turns up out of the blue to give her.

Directed by Christian Schultz from a screenplay co-written with Peter Ambrosio, Presence relocates the haunted house setting to a luxury yacht. The extreme isolation of being at sea provides fertile ground to explore what makes a haunting; is it a product of a fractured mind or something supernatural? Presence attempts to straddle the line between psychological and supernatural, but its vague approach to storytelling casts its horror adrift.
Jennifer (The Kominsky Method’s Jenna Lyng Adams) struggles to piece her life back together once leaving New York after a mental break. She’s plagued by horrific dreams in which she kills Keaton (Octavio Pisano), prone to panic attacks, and suffers further anxiety from being unable to reach her friend and business partner Sam (Alexandria DeBerry) for months. Then Sam reappears out of the blue with a lucrative business proposition from billionaire David (Dave Davis) that has the pair set off...

"One bad dream can't ruin everything." Or maybe it can?? XYZ Films has revealed an official trailer for an indie horror thriller film titled Presence, marking the narrative feature debut of up-and-coming filmmaker Christian Schultz. This initially premiered at Panic Fest and will be out on VOD in November next month. Two young business partners are invited to a week-long private yachting voyage with a potential investor. At night, Jennifer's dreams begin to bleed into reality as the others realize that Jennifer may have unknowingly brought something sinister on-board. What dark secrets is she hiding from them? This stars Jenna Lyng Adams, Dave Davis, Alexandria DeBerry, Major Dodge, & Octavio Pisano. Unsurprisingly the film looks entirely unoriginal, with plenty of cliche tropes, topped off with a rich guy and a big yacht. Watch out. ›››

Six months after debuting its final season, Netflix’s “The Kominsky Method” has just revealed to Gold Derby the names of the 12 cast members who are eligible for the ensemble prize at the 2022 Screen Actors Guild Awards. Two-time SAG Award winner Michael Douglas is joined by former nominees including Paul Reiser and Sarah Baker, plus new addition Kathleen Turner. See the alphabetical list below.
“The Kominsky Method” has a strong track record at the SAG Awards. Its first two seasons both earned three nominations for ensemble, Douglas and Alan Arkin. Arkin departed the series before the final installment, so he will not be eligible. Gold Derby anticipates the series is competitive to hold onto its other two nominations, though, with both the ensemble and Douglas in sixth place in our current combined odds.

Living under lockdown conditions during the coronavirus pandemic has been tough on a lot of people, but perhaps none more so than those suffering domestic abuse. Whilst others may think of home as a refuge, the safest place to be, it doesn't always work out that way.
Made when Covid-19 was just a twinkle in its progenitor's nucleotides, Charlie Buhler's debut feature is set during an imaginary 'flu pandemic (also likely to hit us sometime during the next couple of decades) and opens as panic hits Los Angeles. With quarantine measures being imposed, people are desperately trying to escape before they miss their chance. Ava (Jenna Lyng Adams) planned to escape with her boyfriend Kelly (Jackson Davis), but they arrive at the airport just as passenger flights are grounded. What could be more frightening than the possibility of sheltering in a place that isn't as safe as it looks? In the upcoming thriller Before the Fire, an actress must come to grips with the realization that her rising career has been halted by the threat of a deadly pandemic. Her reluctance to return to small-town living, however temporary, is multiplied when the place she formerly called home forces her to confront something she did not anticipate, which may be even more dangerous than a murderous virus. Jenna Lyng Adams stars, along with Jackson Davis, Ryan Vigilant, and Charles Hubbell. Charlie Buhler directed. The film premiered at the Cinequest Film Festival earlier this year. "What's the plan? You always have a plan..." An official trailer has debuted online for an indie drama titled Before the Fire, formerly called The Great Silence, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Charlie Buhler. This just premiered at the Cinequest Film Festival and is still looking for distribution. The plot couldn't be more coincidental with what's happening in the world right now. Which might be why they're releasing this trailer. When a global pandemic forces a TV actress to escape to her rural hometown, an intruder from her past proves as dangerous as the encroaching virus. "The viruses in the present and of her past both lurk around." Sounds extra frightening. Before the Fire stars Jenna Lyng Adams, who also wrote the screenplay for the film, as Ava, plus Jackson Davis, Ryan Vigilant, Charlie Buhler, and Tim Driscoll. Filmmaker Steven Piet has worn many hats over the course of his short career. He served as the cinematographer and editor for the documentary Girl Rising, a look at how education changes the lives of nine exploited girls from around the world. He also worked as a second unit crew member for the 2011 Mark Pellington ensemble drama I Melt With You. And that’s about it. Based on his directorial debut, Uncle John, you would think he would have far more credits to his name, as he has masterfully interwoven multiple genres into one tightly crafted, surprising little film.
Co-written by Piet and Erik Crary, the script combines folksy rural thriller, urban rom-com, and indie dark comedy to depict a low-key revenge story involving an elderly man and, ostensibly, his grown nephew. The experiment benefits from the performances of its two leads, veteran character actor John Ashton and promising newcomer Alex Moffat.

Beginning in medias res, Uncle John spins a delicate web of intrigue and mystery. The titular character (John Ashton) is introduced as he's (probably) up to no good, a suspicion that is quickly confirmed for the audience but not for the other characters in the movie. John appears to be quite normal, an older gentleman who meets regularly with his senior-citizen pals at the local diner. He lives on a decent-sized piece of property outside of a small town in Wisconsin; he's friendly and pleasant and otherwise quite forgettable. Meanwhile, a young man in Chicago named Ben (Alex Moffat) works as a graphic designer in a small company. His eyes light up when Kate (Jenna Lyng) joins the company as a middle manager. She's his...

With Sundance in the rear view mirror and Berlin just around the corner, another huge festival that’s now very much in mind is the 2015 South By Southwest Film Festival (SXSW 2015), to be held in Austin, Texas, this March. And this year, the lineup looks no less eclectic than in any previous year for the festival.
SXSW 2015 will see the debut of two big-studio comedies (Paul Feig’s Spy, starring Melissa McCarthy; and Etan Cohen’s Get Hard, starring Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart), some red-hot documentaries (none more so than Alex Gibney’s Steve Jobs: The Man in the Machine) and a vast array of smaller indie titles. Intriguingly, Judd Apatow’s Amy Schumer vehicle Trainwreck will be screened as a work-in-progress.
Elsewhere, Alex Garland’s well-received Ex Machina will be making an appearance, as will Ryan Gosling’s much-maligned Lost River. And curiously, there will be a...
