- Since 1923, the San Francisco Opera has presented the US debuts of numerous artists, including Anna Netrebko, Birgit Nilsson, Leontyne Price, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, and Renata Tebaldi; as well as conductors Valery Gergiev, Charles Mackerras, and Georg Solti.
- It is the second largest opera company in North America, founded by Gaetano Merola and incorporated in 1923. The Company's first performance, La Boheme, took place in the Civic Auditorium. Its current home is the War Memorial Opera House.
