In a year of uncertainty, with the literal horror film about a seemingly unstoppable deadly virus happening outside our front doors, reconnecting with movies on streaming networks, going to virtual film festivals, and returning to the sacred sanctum of the movie theater was pure joy. Horror took new forms in 2021, with fearfully fantastic and dreadfully reality-driven stories. 2021 found new ways to approach recurring themes of isolation, desperation, and the fear of the unknown. Films about religion, urban legends, culture, society, ecology, demons, slashers, and even automotive sensuality brought intriguing visions to beautifully horrific life. This year was undeniably a unique experience for genre fans. This list is my favorite horror from 2021.

One of this writer’s favorite indie genre movies of the year, Come True, is getting released to both Blu and DVD this week courtesy of Scream Factory, and Kino Lorber is showing some love to a pair of classic thrillers as well: The Spider Woman Strikes Back and The Mad Doctor. Other releases for November 2nd include The Banishing, Pig featuring Nicolas Cage, and The Spore.

Come True (Anthony Scott Burns)
The darkened screen is almost pitch black before we can begin to discern shapes in the distance. First it’s wooden stakes in the ground at what looks to be a trailhead of sorts. Next it’s a mountain in the distance. Finally we come to a door that swings open as though we’ve been placed inside a videogame merging the puzzle mechanics of Myst with the brooding aesthetic of Hellraiser only to continue moving forward towards a bald figure with back turned—unmoving and foreboding with a mysterious air that can conjure nothing besides dread. For moviegoers accustomed to stoner-dude protagonists, “The Marijuana Conspiracy” offers a nice change. The Canadian drama, set in 1972, is full of Mary Janes. Okay, really just one Mary and one Jane. But they’re joined by other young women who answer a call to participate in a research project. For 98 days, Mary, Janice, Jane, Mourinda and Marissa will be able — more like required — to smoke dope. And they get to imbibe without fear of the fuzz.
Writer-director Craig Pryce adapted the true story of research the Addiction Research Foundation undertook when Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau began considering the decriminalization of recreational cannabis. (Hint: They were not for it.) It was dubbed “Project Marijuana,” but Pryce has renamed it the friskier sounding “Project Venus.”

Stars: Julia Sarah Stone, Landon Liboiron, Carlee Ryski, Christopher Heatherington, Tedra Rogers | Written and Directed by Anthony Scott Burns
Stylishly directed, shot and edited by Anthony Scott Burns (Our House), this creepy Canadian sci-fi horror takes a nightmarish peek into the subconscious. Combining strong visuals with an intriguing mystery plot and at least one state-of-the-art jump scare, Come True brings new meaning to the term sleeper hit.
Julia Sarah Stone plays 18 year-old Sarah Dunne, a high school student whose relationship with her mother has soured to the point where she’s effectively a runaway, though she still pops home under cover of darkness to pick up things like a sleeping bag and her laptop. Tired of kipping overnight in a child’s playground, she jumps at the chance to participate in a sleep study, where she’s hooked up to a bunch of machines and is observed every night by Dr.

The Science of Sleep: Burns Roars into Your Rem Cycle with Broody Thriller
“To sleep, perchance to scream” might be a takeaway impression from Come True, the sophomore film from Canadian director Anthony Scott Burns, a moody little somnambulistic thriller which will generate a bevy of comparisons (or tantalizing synchronicities) across a variety of conceptual sci-fi stories.
Long, drawn out sequences segue into increasingly menacing territory not unlike the experience and oft-illogical processes of a nightmare with a stellar combination of visuals and audio cues inviting the audience into a tense lull. A compelling performance from lead Julia Sarah Stone as a traumatized runaway turned sleep study participant assists in the necessary emotional investment to keep the film on edge during precarious drifts.…...

Anthony Scott Burns–filmmaker, musician, and half the team behind “Our House”–branches into science fiction with the eerily hypnotic “Come True,” starring Julia Sarah Stone. Take some Wes Craven, fold in David Cronenberg, sprinkle on a bit of Carl Jung and Philip K. Dick, and you get “Come True,” which imagines a not-so-distant future in which dreams are studied like math problems.

"These women know what they signed up for..." Samuel Goldwyn Films has released an official trailer for an indie feature titled The Marijuana Conspiracy, based on a remarkably true story. This entertaining & informative film took place in 1972. It's about an outlandish study on the effects of marijuana on young women. This film centers around five young women who shared a common goal: to make some money and have a fresh start in life. They must endure isolated captivity in a true 98-day human experiment, but as the tagline states, "they had no one to protect them but each other." Oddly, the final results have never been released. The film stars Julia Sarah Stone, Morgan Kohan, Brittany Bristow, Tymika Tafari, and Kyla Young. It's being released on VOD on 4/20 (of course!) this spring. Inspired by Doreen Brown, one of the real life women whom the film is based upon. Years after the experiment ended,...

Are you ready for the weekend? Specifically, are you ready for a Long Weekend? Of course, we’re referring to the rom-com from Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions’ Stage 6 Films.
Long Weekend will make its debut in theaters today and marks the feature directorial debut of Steve Basilone, who also wrote the script.
The rom-com stars Finn Wittrock as Bart who has a serendipitous meeting with Vienna played by Zoë Chao. She’s a little bit of a mystery, but the two end up having a connection and they spend a whirlwind weekend together (hence the title of the movie). As the two fall fast and hard for each other, they dont realize that both carry secrets that could be their undoing… or the chance for a fresh start.
The film also features Casey Wilson, Jim Rash and Damon Wayans, Jr. Long Weekend is produced by Deanna Barillari, Laura Lewis, Theodora Dunlap,...

“Come True” wears its many influences on its sleeve, notably the work of David Cronenberg and Philip K. Dick, “A Nightmare on Elm Street” and “Donnie Darko,” with nods to “The Shining,” “Night of the Living Dead” and “The Terminator” thrown in for good measure. Nonetheless, filmmaker Anthony Scott Burns (“Our House”) melds those inspirations — as well as Rodney Ascher’s “The Nightmare” — to craft a uniquely illusory sci-fi thriller about an adrift young woman who copes with her unsettling slumbering visions by participating in a sleep study. that should bolster its chances to break out of the genre pack when it debuts in select theaters and on VOD on March 12.

Few cinematic tropes are as easy — and annoying — to deploy than the winking revelation that “it was all just a dream!” And while filmmaker Anthony Scott Burns mostly avoids falling into that particular narrative trap in “Come True,” a horror outing built around literal nightmares that just might be real, he can’t avoid other missteps that do similar damage to an otherwise compelling story. In just his second feature, , but a series of stumbles in the film’s final act — the worst of which is run through with icky implications Burns seems terribly unaware of — end the film on a wearisome final point.
Most of the work that gets us there is good, however, and Burns’ ability to build an original horror film out of compelling ideas is obvious. Bolstered by a strong performance from Julia Sarah Stone and an intriguing setup, “Come True” has plenty of elements worth celebrating,...

An insomniac student is haunted by a demonic figure in this flamboyant and stylised waking dream of a film
There is something visionary about this near-nonsensical, kitsch but atmospheric techno-thriller from Canadian director Anthony Scott Burns. Drawn along on dark somnambulic rhythms, it incorporates elements of fantasy, horror and 80s synthwave aesthetics without giving itself over completely to any of them.
A wordless first 10 minutes introduces us to Sarah (Julia Sarah Stone), a runaway student apparently unwelcome or unwilling to return home, waking in spectrally lit parks and falling asleep in coffee shops. Dropping suddenly into surrealistic CGI dreams that track inexorably towards a demonic figure who, if approached too closely, wakes her with a start. Sarah decides to try to climb out of this insomniac bath by enrolling in a university sleep study. It is overseen by Dr Meyer, a Cronenbergian academic in big glasses, but run by a trio of researchers who,...

Sleep paralysis is a fascinating phenomenon which manifests in strangely similar ways around the world. It's often terrifying to those who experience it and this is not the first horror film it has inspired. Highly stylised as it is, though, this is a film that's likely to linger in the memory - and perhaps make its way into dreams - and although it's a low budget effort with pacing problems and a disappointing ending, it has some smart observations to make.
Our protagonist is Sarah (Julia Sarah Stone), who signs up to participate in a sleep study for the simple reason that she needs somewhere to sleep. Anyone who has been homeless will recognise straight away the particular kind of fatigue that she displays before the experiment begins, as well as understanding her reluctance to talk about it, and there's a well observed prologue which illustrates her efforts to find safe.

Ever have a bad dream? Maybe, you’ve had the same bad dream more than once… Well, writer, director and composer Anthony Scott Burns artfully explores the edges of daily reality that often become our nightmares in Come True (2020), with unsettling results.
It’s a pretty simple setup. We open on a gloomy monochromatic nightmare, which creeps through a dilapidated hallway and finds a hunched, malformed figure… Then, Sarah Dunn (Julia Sarah Stone) springs awake from her bad dream on a children’s slide in a deserted park. She’s having trouble sleeping, and staying awake is proving just as difficult. Haunting her daylight hours, with stolen showers, a dozen cups of coffee and narcoleptic maths lessons, it all becomes too much, and Sarah nervously signs up to a sleep study program at a local university to get some answers and a goodnight’s sleep.
The story is broken up into chapters,...

Haunting her daylight hours, with stolen showers, a dozen cups of coffee and narcoleptic maths lessons, it all becomes too much, and Sarah nervously signs up to a sleep study program at a local university to get some answers and a goodnight’s sleep.

It would be easy to dismiss Rama Rau’s first non-documentary feature Honey Bee as another melodramatically grim look at the consequences of sex trafficking in North America because it does utilize a lot of narrative convenience as far as driving the plot towards its endgame. Doing so, however, would discount the reason why Bonnie Fairweather and Kathleen Hepburn’s script works this way and why the resulting message is more important than the journey to get there. The whole point of portraying young Natalie’s (Julia Sarah Stone) plight is to provide an example for how the cycle of abuse can be broken. It’s not about piling on the tragedy or sweeping her trauma under the rug for some unrealistic rebirth in the aftermath. It’s about growing, healing, and hope.

"Time is money, let's go." Syndicado has debuted the official US trailer for a Canadian film titled Honey Bee, the first feature from acclaimed doc filmmaker Rama Rau. This premiered at the Whistler Film Festival in 2018, and is getting a VOD release this month in the US. Honey Bee is an unpredictable tale of survival that follows the journey of quick-witted "Honey Bee", an underage truck stop sex worker ensnared by her ruthless Romeo-pimp boyfriend. Unwittingly, she is taken into foster care with her new family, Louise and Christian, in a remote rural area in Northern Canada where she discovers there might be more to life than the hand she's been dealt. Rau needed to tell this story as a fictionalized drama because to tell the real stories would put the lives of these girls at risk. Starring Julia Sarah Stone, Martha Plimpton, Peter Outerbridge, Steven Love, and Michelle McLeod.

With Come True, co-writer/director Anthony Scott Burns has crafted a neon-soaked descent into the depths of the human mind that conjures up some very Cronenbergian feelings, but what Burns has created here is distinctive enough to firmly stand upon its own two feet. Featuring a stunning lead performance Julia Sarah Stone, Come True is a beautiful yet truly frightening examination of the power of dreams that features some of the most evocative dreamscape imagery this writer has witnessed since The Cell. Simply put – Come True is the kind of challenging and absorbing genre fare that will always catch my eye.

And suddenly it’s over with a cut to Sarah (Julia Sarah Stone) awakening from a nightmare, bundled inside a sleeping bag and laying atop a playground slide. The day commences. The images slightly fade.
