Ramy Youssef hosted “Saturday Night Live” this weekend and left little unturned in his opening monologue. Impressively, the comedian and actor was able to joke about everything from being Muslim in a Donald Trump-enthused upstate New York, working the Joe Biden campaign and nominating a trans woman for president.
“Like, imagine her speech. It would be so inspiring,” he joked. “She would be like, ‘A lot of politicians talk about change’ — like, you can see the bumper sticker, right? ‘Real change,'” he said.
Youssef kicked things off by explaining that we are experiencing an “incredibly spiritual weekend” that includes Ramadan, Easter and the release of Beyoncé’s new album. “There are just so many religions celebrating at once,” he said.
From there, he shared that he’d recently performed in upstate New York, and while exploring the area where he performed, he noticed “all this Trump stuff — flags,...

In his “Saturday Night Live” monologue, Ramy Youssef called for a free Palestine and for the release of the hostages taken in the Israel-Hamas War.
At the top of his monologue, Youssef joked, “This is an incredibly spiritual weekend. We’re in the holy month of Ramadan. Tomorrow is Easter. And yesterday, Beyoncé released a new album. There’s just so many religions celebrating all at once.”
He went on to talk about the power of prayer, and joked that “In my friend group, I’m one of the only guys who prays. I’m friends with a lot of sinners, like, just disgusting people. And they call me when they’re in trouble because they want me to pray for them.”
Youssef recalled getting a call from his friend Ahmed, who asked him to pray for his family in Gaza.
“I’m like, ‘Dude, I got you,'” Youssef said.

Richard Dawkins is not moved by religious or otherwise supernatural claims. He was, however, so moved by an Elvis Presley song that he came to the conclusion that heaven itself wanted him to hear it. Interestingly, he agreed with the track’s lyrics on a deep level. Here’s a look at how Dawkins lost his faith and how Elvis found his own form of spirituality.
Richard Dawkins connected with the view of nature in 1 Elvis Presley song
In his 2013 book An Appetite for Wonder, Dawkins said he was raised Anglican. However, he became disillusioned with Christianity as a young man due to the doctrine of original sin. He still believed in God because he felt the glories of the natural world pointed to the existence of a designer. He was also a huge fan of the “Blue Suede Shoes” singer. “I worshiped Elvis and I was a strong believer in a non-denominational creator god,...

Priscilla Presley got to know Elvis Presley’s spiritual side well during their relationship. He encouraged her to read books about spirituality and led Bible reading sessions in their home. While he became more interested in spirituality as an adult, he was always religious. Priscilla explained she had experienced Elvis heal her with just a touch.
Priscilla Presley said Elvis had the ability to heal with touch
Elvis discovered his early musical inspiration in the church he attended with his family. The teachings also shaped his personality as an adult.
“The spiritual side of Elvis was a dominant part of his nature,” Priscilla wrote in her book Elvis and Me. “As a small boy growing up in Tupelo, Mississippi, he and his family attended church regularly at the First Assembly of God. He was raised on hellfire-and-brimstone preaching that put the fear of God in you and music that led you to the Pearly Gates.

Salman Rushdie hinted in February that he was working on a memoir about the stabbing attack last year that nearly killed him and left him blind in one eye. Now, the Booker Prize winner has announced that book will be called Knife and will be published by Penguin Random House on April 16, 2024.
Rushdie is best-known for novels such as Midnight’s Children and The Satanic Verses, some of which have been adapted for the screen. The author told the New Yorker earlier this year that the new book, Knife: Meditations After an Attempted Murder, was conceived as a sort-of sequel to his 2012 memoir, Joseph Anton.
At first, Rushdie resisted the idea, “because it felt almost like it was being forced on me—the attack demanded that I should write about the attack.” But, he said, he found a “microscopic” look at the event engrossing.
However, unlike the third-person voice he used in Joseph Anton,...

Priscilla Presley was the only woman Elvis ever married. She was one of the great loves of his life. Still, he wanted to check to see if she was truly his soulmate. In the mid-1960s, Elvis grew interested in spirituality after speaking with his new barber. Using numerology, he wanted to see if they were actually destined to be together. Priscilla nervously awaited his discoveries.

Pakistani-American documentary filmmaker and political activist Mohammed Ali Naqvi’s Primetime Emmy-nominated film The Accused: Damned or Devoted? has been called a “scarily acute portrait of how religion and politics intersect” by the U.K.’s Telegraph.
Nominated for Exceptional Merit in Documentary Filmmaking, the film is an explicit account of the rise of cleric Khadim Hussain Rizvi, who has been on a mission to preserve Pakistan’s blasphemy laws that prescribe an inescapable death sentence for disrespecting the Prophet Muhammad, and life imprisonment for disgracing the Holy Quran.
In the film, Naqvi explores the cases of several people who have either been accused of blasphemy or who have opposed the blasphemy laws – a group that includes Christian minorities, liberals, and opposing moderate Muslim voices. The World channel documentary is streaming on PBS Passport and Amazon Prime and aired on PBS stations in May.

“The Lady of Heaven,” “The Batman,” and “The Kashmir Files” were the most complained about films in the U.K. in 2022, the British Board of Film Classification’s (BBFC) annual report reveals.
“The Lady of Heaven,” which the BBFC describes as “a drama concerning the life of Fatima, a daughter of the prophet Muhammad,” topped the list with 1,573 complaints “from people who felt that the film was blasphemous and historically inaccurate.” The film was pulled from some U.K. cinemas upon release due to these concerns.

Gerard Butler stars in ‘Kandahar’ (Photo Courtesy of Open Road Films)
For the second time this year, a film is hitting theaters focusing on the turmoil and chaos in the Middle East and an American and his interpreter fighting to escape Afghanistan. The first was Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant starring Jake Gyllenhaal. The second is the action drama Kandahar with Gerard Butler.
Kandahar centers around Tom Harris, an undercover CIA operative portrayed by Butler, who manages to uncover a clandestine nuclear facility in Iran and dismantle it. Although his mission is nearly flawless, a whistleblower at the Pentagon leaks the operation to a British journalist (Elnaaz Norouzi). Consequently, the journalist is apprehended by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard and subjected to interrogation.

The dynamic doubles duo of Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula surged into the 2023 Miami Open quarterfinals, demonstrating exceptional teamwork once again.
Despite Gauff's earlier exit in the singles event, she has shown no signs of slowing down alongside Pegula in the doubles competition. Gauff and Pegula, who previously captured the 2023 Qatar Open title together, have their sights set on extending their winning in Miami.
The second-seeded pair navigated their way through the initial rounds, overcoming the Fruhvirtova sisters Linda and Brenda, and in the second round, they took on a talented team of Anhelina Danilina and Asia Muhammad.

A film as convoluted as its title, To Live and Die and Live is a poetic exploration of a new Detroit facing the same problems as the old one. Rust Belt cities throughout the country are undergoing a similar transformation: once built by a hard-working middle class that got their hands dirty and made things, they’ve been hollowed-out and rediscovered by a new generation of gentrifying hipsters who eventually build breweries on every corner.
Films exploring this transformation of Rust Belt cities have primarily been the domain of under-resourced filmmakers working on under-resourced film productions, the kind of work Muhammad Abdullah (Amin Jospeh) seemed to escape making by moving to the coasts. Returning to Detroit for his step-father’s funeral, Muhammad stops first at a night club for a cocaine-filled bender where he encounters Asia (Skye P Marshall), a party girl who lives like she may die young. Like Qasim Basir’s last feature, “A Boy. A Girl. A Dream,” his new “To Live & Die and Live” is a questing mood piece whose characters roam a city’s highlife in a fruitless search for inner peace. Here the setting is Detroit, but the protagonist a successful filmmaker taking a forced yet needed sabbatical from the pressures of that prior film’s Los Angeles. The issues he’s dragged with him are hardly alleviated by this return to home turf, however.
As before, the writer-director’s elliptical narrative approach leaves a lot of unanswered questions. But the frustration they generate is again outweighed by the insight afforded into upwardly mobile (and in this case Muslim) African American communities, as well as the melancholy poetical drift of his cinematic style.
Burly, bearded Muhammad Abdullah (Amin Joseph) is a prodigal son whose return to Motor City should be a victory lap.

Perhaps more than anything else, To Live and Die and Live is an unexpected ode to the city of Detroit. Not many films have been shot there, and certainly none has shown off the New Detroit as glamorously and impressively as Qasim Basir has done in his fourth feature that just debuted in the Next section at the Sundance Film Festival; the alluring architecture and vibes make you want to schedule a trip at once. Other than that, this is, to a significant degree, a hang-out film, featuring a film director central character at sixes and sevens about what to do next — you could generously call it Basir’s 8 ½.
Hanging out is certainly what Muhammad (Amin Joseph) does most of the time. Ostensibly he’s come back to town from L.A. due to the death of his stepfather, and he dutifully attends the funeral. But the smooth-talking young man...

Sundance alum Qasim Basir returns to Park City with “To Live and Die and Live,” an endlessly grim tale about a filmmaker’s homecoming to Detroit for his father’s funeral and some unfinished business. This is set against a palette of the prevailing sense of alienation he experiences within his extended family, creative circles, and the Muslim community.
Muhammad first emerges, sobbing, from a kaleidoscopic blur that turns out to be illuminated advertisements along an airport terminal’s moving walkway. In a split second his mood shifts. After a quick visit with his drug dealer, he makes his way to a club where purple-haired Asia catches his eye as she writhes on the dance floor. She swats his wandering hand away, yet she doesn’t outright shut him down. She does, however, draw a line when he gets exercised over her picking up his phone.

Alexandrova came from a break down three times in the first set and saved a set point serving at 5-6, but posted her sixth bagel of 2022 in the second set.
The 27-year-old had previously lifted the trophies at Shenzhen 2020 and ‘s-Hertogenbosch 2022 and improved to 3-2 in tour-level finals overall. The 27-year-old also extended her head-to-head lead over Ostapenko to 5-2.
