The Oscar-nominated actor and the boss of Xl Recordings – now a synth-pop duo performing ghostly songs with lyrics rooted in childhood trauma – discuss the healing power of making art
Inside a rehearsal space scented with essential oils, a new, unlikely electro-art-pop duo are preparing for their live debut. Called Sam Morton, they are the collaborative pairing of the twice-Oscar-nominated actor, director and writer Samantha Morton and the celebrated producer, songwriter and boss of Xl Recordings Richard Russell. Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, stunned millions of people around the world when they chose to step down from their royal roles in 2020. Even more surprising was that following their exit, they did a series of interviews and tell-alls airing out the royals’ dirty laundry and claiming they were unfairly treated when they were working members of the family.
By the Sussexes’ account, a feud had been brewing between Prince William and Prince Harry for some time which is also something much of the public hadn’t been aware of. That’s because from the outside the brothers were always thought to be the best of friends and going all the way back to the days when their mother was still alive, they appeared so happy together.
But we know now something behind the scenes changed that. According to someone who used to work in the royal household,...

BAFTA celebrated a wonderful ceremony this year at the Royal Festival Hall over here in London, with Christopher Nolan‘s “Oppenheimer” the biggest champion of the evening. That movie took home seven BAFTA masks including Best Picture but it wasn’t the only film to have a big night.
“Poor Things” won five BAFTAs in total, “The Zone of Interest” took home three awards, and Samantha Morton was awarded the BAFTA Fellowship by presenter David Heyman. While not all of the winners made their way down to the Winners Press Conference Room, the majority did. There, the filmmakers and stars chatted away about their victories and projects with us journalists. Here’s a selection of some of the best moments.

Acclaimed British actor, writer and director Samantha Morton who was awarded a Fellowship at the Ee BAFTA Awards on Sunday has called for more investment in British cinema.
The award is the highest recognition given by BAFTA to an individual for their exceptional contribution to the film, games or television industry.
Addressing a press conference after accepting her award, Morton said: “We need more investment in British cinema. I’ve been saying this for years because we can’t just be a service industry for the wonderful Americans. They are amazing and thank God they come here and make movies and put us in as well, thank you. Like in France, we need our own quotas and we need to be making those investments.” Inward investment in the U.K. film and high-end TV industry was $4.22 billion in 2023, with the bulk of it coming from the U.S.

Samantha Morton, the British actor (She Said, The Whale, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, The Walking Dead), writer (I Am…Kirsty) and director (The Unloved), received the BAFTA Fellowship, the British Academy’s highest honor at the BAFTA Film Awards in London on Sunday. But the outspoken star used her moment on stage to share very emotional words about children who live in poverty or who can’t live safely at home.
“For me, this is really nothing short of a miracle,” Morton said about receiving the honor, recalling how she was “hungry” and “cold” as a kid growing up in poverty.
“Film changed my life, it transformed me,” she continued. “When I first saw Ken Loach’s Kes… I was forever changed” seeing “poverty, people like me, my life and my family on the screen,” she said. Her conclusion: “Representation matters.”

The ceremony took place tonight (February 18) at London’s Royal Festival Hall where Oppenheimer led the winners with seven awards.
Bafta fellowship recipient Samantha Morton gave a moving speech, touching upon her experiences in care and how important representation is. “I would tell [my younger self[, homeless and cold, hungry and alone, that you’ll have a family one day and you’ll go beyond what government statistics laid out for you,” Morton said.

Through its remarkable 25-season run, premier Law & Order spinoff Law & Order: Special Victims Unit has featured many classic moments.
From Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni) and Olivia Benson’s (Mariska Hargitay) burgeoning chemistry to the ripped-from-the-headlines cases to basically everything Ice-t’s Fin Tutuola says, fans have had plenty of things to latch onto. And yet, one Law & Order: Svu scene stands tall above them all.
It’s the time that Twin Peaks‘ Kyle MacLachlan shot and killed a kid.
Actually, “Kyle MacLachlan shot and killed a kid” is somehow underselling it. It’s more accurate to say that Kyle MacLachlan breaks out of Elliot Stabler’s vice-like grip, tosses an innocent bystander aside like a rag doll, grabs a cop’s gun, and fatally shoots an 13-year-old who had just told him “I’m sorry for what happened, sir. I really am.”

Soberly relevant in light of the current Israel-Hamas conflict, filmmaker Michael Winterbottom takes us back to the pre-1948 establishment of the state of Israel and early rise of Zionist activism, as told through a love story between a Jew and a Brit. Shoshana is an ambitious project as it weaves action sequences with socio-political ideas of the era with some degree of success – greatly helped by its protagonists’ professions that allow greater insight into the region’s developing unrest.
Set in 1930s’ cosmopolitan Tel Aviv, Shoshana (Irina Starshenbaum) casually meets Englishman Thomas Wilkins (Douglas Booth) at a party, who is assigned to the Palestinian police force, and they begin an affair. Their union is doomed from the beginning as work and social alliances threaten journalist Shoshana’s wellbeing, while Wilkins investigates escalating violence against Arabs from various Zionist militant factions and puts himself in danger’s path.

Since stepping down from royal duties, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have returned to the U.K. a handful of times. Some of the royal events they attended included Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee, as well as the late monarch‘s funeral, and Harry made a solo trip to attend King Charles’ coronation in May. The duke traveled to England again in September for the 2023 WellChild Awards before he and his wife head to Germany where the Invictus Games are being held.
However, a few royal experts say the duke and duchess’s visits will remain infrequent and the pair won’t ever consider returning on a permanent basis because of what Meghan would be expected to do when the Princess of Wales (formerly known as Kate Middleton) becomes queen.

Before marrying Prince Harry in 2018, Meghan Markle was the wife of film producer Trevor Engelson. The couple was married for three years before their union ended. However, the brutal way Meghan reportedly ended her marriage shocked one royal author, who included details of the couple’s split in a 2018 book about the Duchess of Sussex.
Meghan Markle’s first marriage ended in 2014
Andrew Morton, who authored the books Meghan: A Hollywood Princess and Diana: Her True Story, revealed that sources close to the couple spilled how Meghan Markle put a period on her marriage to Trevor Engelson. The book claims Meghan’s decision came “totally out of the blue.”
Meghan and Engelson dated for seven years before tying the knot in Jamaica. However, according to Morton, Meghan was the one who pulled the plug on their union.
In Meghan: A Hollywood Princess, Morton wrote that Meghan ended her first marriage rather quickly.

Prince Harry went through plenty of trials and tribulations as a royal. He and his brother, Prince William, lost their mother, Princess Diana, in a tragic car accident in 1997. Harry had various girlfriends through the years, but recently alleged that the press always did their best to break them apart — and the same went for his relationship with Meghan Markle, the woman he married in 2018.
Through it all, Harry always remained close with his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II. Though she died in 2022, she was a large part of Harry’s life, including while he and Meghan were finalizing their exit from the British royal family. And one royal biographer said the prince had a way of getting the queen to go with any “schemes” he created because she always had a “soft spot” for her grandson.

London, June 9 (Ians) Safety becomes more important than seeking justice to individuals after a sexual harassment event, according to two studies, explaining why such people may not come forward immediately, or at all.
In the studies, researchers from the Universities of Exeter in the UK and Copenhagen in Denmark compared answers from a confidential online survey from people who have experienced sexual harassment to those who have not but were asked to imagine how they would react.
The results, published in Psychology of Women Quarterly, showed that people who have experienced sexual harassment reported a range of needs and engaged in a variety of actions to meet these needs. Needs for safety, personal control and social support were prioritised over formal actions, such as reporting to police.
On the contrary, those who had not encountered sexual harassment anticipated having stronger needs and taking more actions — especially formal ones.

Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton haven’t always been the closest of sisters in law. Meghan married Prince Harry in 2018, while Kate married Prince William in 2011, and though the public wanted the ladies to hit it off and become best friends, they never seemed to get their relationship off the ground.
Though the two women aren’t close, they are reportedly cordial, and when one of them makes a mistake, they own it. Such was the case when Kate reportedly made Meghan cry over her bridesmaid dresses in 2018, and after Kate apologized, one royal expert says Meghan extended a “peace offering.”

John Ratzenberger's acting career is riddled with the kind of trivia-fodder that would delight his "Cheers" character, Cliff Clavin. Aside from his sitcom stardom, the actor is best known as Pixar's good-luck charm (he appears in the animation studio's first 23 features) and, pre-"Cheers," as a master of the blink-and-miss-it walk-on role. Settle in to watch films as disparate as Richard Donner's "Superman," Kevin Connor's "Motel Hell," or Warren Beatty's "Reds," and you'll spy Ratzenberg at some point.
With his amusingly bushy mustache and awkward bearing, Ratzenberger was never going to be a leading man. He's a born character actor, and could've very well been a member of the "that guy" all-stars with Dick Miller, Stephen Tobolowsky, and James Rebhorn, had he not found television immortality as everyone's favorite know-some-of-it-all mail carrier. Spare ghostwriter J.R. Moehringer didn’t just argue with Prince Harry during the writing process. The two also shared some lighter moments. How the Duke of Sussex responded to an expert’s comment regarding the memoir and his father, King Charles III. Plus, the writer’s laugh-inducing remark.

Amazon, current owners of the entire MGM film library, are developing a new "RoboCop" TV series as a direct sequel to director Paul Verhoeven's 1987 satirical, ultra-violent feature, for exclusive streaming on Prime Video:
"In the original film, Detroit is on the verge of collapse due to financial mismanagement and a high crime rate. The city signs a deal with the mega-corporation 'Omni Consumer Products' (Ocp) to run Detroit's police department in exchange for letting Ocp rebuild run-down sections of the city into a high-end utopia. Senior Vice President 'Dick Jones' demonstrates a new law enforcement robot, 'Ed-209'.
"However, the robot malfunctions, killing an executive. 'Bob Morton', an ambitious executive, uses the opportunity to introduce his own experimental cyborg design, 'RoboCop'. The chairman, aka 'The Old Man' is dismayed at the Ed-209 failure and approves Morton's plan, to Jones's anger.

Are there any roles you’d specifically like to play or genre of film you’ve not yet done? Buffalo666
I’ve always wanted to be a Bond villain or an action hero baddie. Then I got to play Alpha in the Walking Dead, so that box was ticked. I’ve always wished I spoke other languages, like Russian or Polish or French, so that I could be in foreign language cinema. I’m on Duolingo at the moment. Working in a country and a culture that’s unfamiliar would be really educating and amazing.

In 1993, Rocky Morton's and Annabel Jankel's "Super Mario Bros." was released in theaters to terrible reviews and widespread derision. Many audiences at the time could be heard rejecting the film out of hand, as it invented its own, bizarre premise wholly separate from the games on which it was based. The games dealt hallucinatory adventure/fantasy scenarios about plumbers trekking across a land lousy with hammer-throwing turtles and power-granting mushrooms to rescue a princess that had been kidnapped by a fire-breathing dragon.
The film, in contrast, posited that when Earth was struck by the meteor that killed the dinosaurs, it created two parallel Earths. One Earth was the familiar realm where humans evolved from apes. The other was a world where dinosaurs survived and continued to evolve into human-looking creatures. The dinosaur dimension, however, was facing ruin at the hands of its tyrannical leader King Koopa (Dennis Hopper...

Some of the finest acting ever nominated for an Oscar constitutes no more than five percent of the movie it’s in. Over the past 20 years, Alan Arkin (“Argo”) and Sam Elliott (“A Star is Born”) have both gotten into Best Supporting Actor for roles that, combined, barely exceed 15 minutes of screen-time. Viola Davis(“Doubt”) and William Hurt (“A History of Violence”) were also recognized for the even trickier task of condensing their work to a one-scene cameo. It may not be glamorous, but credibly fleshing a character out against the clock is a craft unto itself.
Thankfully, the art of the single-scene performance is alive and well. A year after Bradley Cooper likely just missed an Academy Award nomination for stealing the show in “Licorice Pizza” with only about 10 minutes of screen-time, Judd Hirsch is poised to make the Supporting Actor shortlist. This review originally ran October 13, 2022, in conjunction with the film’s world premiere at the New York Film Festival.
Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey’s explosive New York Times report on Harvey Weinstein’s decades-long abuse behind the scenes at Miramax and his own company broke Hollywood open, exposing a new generation of workplace tyrants and sex pests, and creating, hopefully, some social shifts for good.
Five years after the rise of the #MeToo hashtag and three years after the publication of Kantor and Twohey’s book, Hollywood seeks to tell the tale of its own reckoning in a film of the same, succinct title: “She Said.”
Director Maria Schrader offers a film that certainly represents a “Hollywoodization” of the otherwise tedious and tiresome events that occurred in order for Kantor and Twohey to get their witnesses to go on the record, complete with dramatic phone calls, door slams, screaming arguments.

In the inspiring HBO documentary, the gifted classical painter George Anthony Morton looks back at his past of hardship and incarceration
The first images in the HBO documentary Master of Light show George Anthony Morton chopping up white powder. That crafty opening knowingly plays on our assumptions that Morton is cooking dope. A few beats later and it’s revealed that he’s actually just making paint.
Morton acknowledges the fake-out on a Zoom call. “I was preparing drugs in a similar fashion,” the ex-convict turned celebrated painter says with an ear-to-ear grin. He also praises the way Dutch film-maker Rosa Ruth Boesten encapsulates the Kansas City native’s harrowing and inspiring journey with a few suggestive strokes.
