We live in an age of reheated TV dinners on the big screen. We’re months away from hitting the beach with Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron as the 80s TV series Baywatch, and a new TV series based on David Hasslehoff’s other 80s hit Knight Rider. We’ve seen Starsky & Hutch and The Dukes Of Hazzard up on the big screen and now Warner Bros. have delivered the first look at CHiPS – the movie…
Some of us are old enough to remember the weekly tales of the California Highway Patrol. The show initially ran in the late 70s and starred Erik Estrada as Officer “Ponch” Poncherello and Larry Wilcox as “Jon” Andrew Baker. Estrada in particular was a breakout star of the series, and is still well remembered as a pop culture figure. The pair also tried to resurrect the series themselves with CHiPs ’99.

In Brett Ratner's Hercules we see many mythological creatures that Hercules (Dwayne Johnson) battles. Three of them, Lernaean Hydra (multiple-headed water serpent), Cerberus (three-headed hellhound) and Erymanthian Boar (a big boar), are featured in the concept art below that concept artist Andrew Baker did for the visual effects company, Weta. As you can see there are several variations of each. Concept Art by Andrew Baker Everyone knows the legend of Hercules and his twelve labors. Our story begins after the labors, and after the legend. Haunted by a sin from his past, Hercules has become a mercenary. Along with five faithful companions, he travels ancient Greece selling his services for gold and using his legendary reputation to intimidate enemies. But when the benevolent ruler of Thrace and his daughter seek Hercules’ help to defeat a savage and terrifying warlord, Hercules finds that in order for...

Here are some pretty cool designs of the dragon Smaug that were not used in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. These came directly from artist Andrew Baker, who works for Weta. These are designs that he came up with that will be included in the book The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug: Smaug: Unleashing The Dragon.
I love seeing the concept art used for a film. It is interesting to see the thought that is put into developing these kinds of movies.

Hollywood makes awesome visuals all look so commonplace and seamless that we tend to forget that creating creatures like Smaug in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug actually took lots of trial and error and countless pieces of concept art before being finalized for the screen. Today, we’ve got some cool reminders of how that process works – and alternate versions of not only the intimidating dragon, but Beorn’s bear form and the Big Daddy concept from Gore Verbinski’s canceled Bioshock movie. The Hobbit concept pieces come courtesy of Weta artist Andrew Baker and show off how Smaug evolved into the stunning and terrifying creature we see in Jackson’s finished film. Baker reveals that his contributions to the dragon’s...
