Today should be a national holiday. No, not because it's Leap Day or anything, which we all know is nothing more than an arbitrary construct in our fruitless attempts to put labels on the chaos of time and space. Instead, we ought to have the day off because Focus Features decided to bless us with another trailer for "The Bikeriders" that puts yet another oddball performance from Tom Hardy at the very front and center of the action. I mean, when you begin with an off-screen Hardy in an outrageously Chicagoan accent talking about how he wants to start a riding club instead of the actual star of the show, Austin Butler, that says it all, don't it?
Granted, the movie is about much more than Hardy's character starting a fun new hobby with his friends. Mike Shutt reviewed "The Bikeriders" for /Film out of the Austin Film Festival in...

Acclaimed Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos has a unique way of cutting straight to the heart of his oddball characters -- sometimes literally, but always in the most provocative ways. The director behind "The Lobster," "The Killing of the Sacred Deer," and "The Favourite" is no stranger to the idea of using violence and esoteric imagery as a means of bringing idiosyncratic worlds to life, though his most recent film "Poor Things" (reviewed here to great praise by /Film's Mike Shutt) has found itself on an awards track partly by incorporating an even spicier ingredient into the mix: sex. To Lanthimos fans, this was merely another item in the toolbelt for the journey of Bella Baxter (Emma Stone) and her Frankenstein's monster-like transformation into a full-fledged human being. But for co-star Mark Ruffalo, cast as the rascally ne'er-do-well Duncan Wedderburn and the subject of much "furious jumping" with Bella, the...

This article contains spoilers for "Poor Things."
Every year brings a fresh batch of cinematic baddies to vie for the throne of best villain of the bunch. 2023 in particular has ushered in a number of leading contenders, from William Hale (Robert DeNiro) and his murderous conspiracy at the heart of "Killers of the Flower Moon" to Robert Downey, Jr.'s jealously vengeful Lewis Strauss in "Oppenheimer" to even M3GAN in, well, "M3GAN." But as sinister and horrifying as all of these antagonists undoubtedly were, Yorgos Lanthimos might have just saved the best -- or worst -- for last with "Poor Things."
The surprise Oscar hopeful (you can check out /Film's glowing review by Mike Shutt here) follows the Frankenstein-esque story of mad scientist and surgeon Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe) reanimating the corpse of a woman who died by suicide into that of Bella Baxter (Emma Stone). With the intelligence...

"House of the Dragon" and "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power" continued their parallel prestige fantasy ride this last weekend, each with an episode that — dramatically, at least — may well be the best the series has delivered thus far. "Driftmark" and "Udûn," respectively the seventh and sixth episode of "House of the Dragon" and "The Rings of Power," were full of unbearably tense confrontations and fights where long-simmering plotlines came to a head in an explosive manner.
Yet on Monday morning, in the immediate aftermath of "House of the Dragon" the night before, it seemed like all anyone could talk about in the Bad Place was how dark the beach scenes in "Driftmark" were. If you're like me, your timeline may have been flooded with all-black screenshots and complaints of how hard it was to visually decipher those scenes.
/Film's Mike Shutt has explored why "Driftmark" looks the way it does.
